Remember a time when VAR was being pushed for to reduce the time spent talking about refereeing decisions? The technology is in, but the focus on the officials has never been greater, taking the spotlight away from the football itself and leading to death threats for the men with the whistle. In this episode, former Premier League ref Mark Halsey describes the horrific abuse his family was subjected to, but he also admits the standard of officiating in the top-flight needs to improve. He argues that VAR conversations should be made public, a view shared by Peter Walton and Ref Support’s Martin Cassidy. We discuss every issue surrounding officials in detail, from the problematic handball and offside laws to where the blame lies for a drop in England’s refereeing level.***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Exasperation FC does it again. We ‘assess' the inexplicable 1-1 draw with Burnley without trying to completely lose our minds. We last about 30 seconds. After the madness at Turf Moor, we head to the mailbag for more questions on the Burnley balls up, song lyrics, and Peter Walton's voice. It's just that sweet Midlands misery, that makes me cry, cry, cry, cry. Successive defeats away at Wolves and Aston Villa leave us wishing we were lucky. Alas, VAR is all around us, and so the ill-feeling grows. We discuss the joy vacuum that is VAR, the jobsworth ref apologist that is Peter Walton, and – of course – the lacklustre, weathered footballing entity that is Arsenal FC. After another shambolic weekend of VAR, there was only one thing we could start with on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. As officials mishandle baffling clear decisions, we discuss the effect these mistakes has on players’ most visceral emotions while on the pitch and the lack of training for match officials. We also speak to former Premier League referee Peter Walton, who wonders whether the Premier League was even ready for VAR this season due to this lack of training and understanding. It’s not all VAR chat, though, as we take another look at FFP in light of UEFA’s decision to ban Manchester City from European competition. We examine what the policy aims to achieve in a wider context, how it works in practice and how clubs can spend their money on vast improvements without breaking any regulations. Peter Walton joins the FC crew to break down the weekend's most controversial VAR decisions. Plus, Liverpool get pushed to the end and Tuesday's UCL matches are previewed.
Peter Walton considers the reasons for the ‘success’ or ‘failure’ of company voluntary arrangements (“CVAs”) and to investigate the outcomes where CVAs fail. The frequency of CVAs is reasonably low when compared with alternative corporate Insolvency Act 1986 procedures1 and it has been commented that CVAs have a high failure rate. The research project aims to identify ‘successful’ and ‘failed’ CVAs and by doing so, identify key characteristics which will in turn allow practical guidance to be provided to insolvency practitioners (“IPs”) and also inform policy recommendations to Government.
Peter Walton joins the FC crew to discuss the controversial VAR decisions in the PL this weekend. Plus, what notes can England take from Australia's use of the new technology.
Matteo Bonetti and Gab Marcotti join the FC crew to discuss their Serie A teams of the midseason. Plus, Peter Walton helps review a few VAR decisions from the weekend.

After a wild weekend of Premier League action, Rebecca and Alex have to start with Norwich City's massive win over Manchester City which took everybody by surprise, especially Pep Guardiola. We look at how Norwich's impressive tactics and group of players (despite a number of injuries) were able to outwork the reigning champions, with praise for Buendia and Cantwell especially. Man City, on the other hand, looked shambolic at the back and could a lack of Laporte and Kompany cost them over the course of the season? In contrast, Liverpool maintained their 100% unbeaten record at the top of the league against a Newcastle United side who started well but were ultimately undone by the magic of the front three and particularly an outstanding performance from the wizard Bobby Firmino - and we've got plenty of praise for how Jurgen Klopp gets the best out of his players. Chelsea also impressed against Wolves with youth being the talking point of the day as Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori all netted goals. We take a closer look at Chelsea's dynamic options going forward as well as improvements in defence and how a tactical shift could help Azpilicueta and Kepa even more. We also delve into Tottenham's improvement against Crystal Palace and how Harry Kane and Son Heung-min looked far more dynamic, David Luiz's latest moment of madness for Arsenal, Quique Sánchez Flores' return to Watford, and Everton's higgledy-piggledy form. Plus, way too many bedroom analogies, the players picking a pocket or two, poker games, the ongoing VAR feud between Peter Walton and Robbie Savage, and a 'Fame or Shame' look at the incredible career of Samuel Eto'o. Bonus point if you can spot the moment that Noah knocks over one of the podcast mics! **Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts, as it makes it easier for other potential listeners to find us. A combination of wonderful people and experiences that have supported and challenged me, mixed in with a variety of crucial yet difficult experiences have made me who and what I am today… unbelievably optimistic and positive about what everybody can achieve and obsessed with helping people fulfil their dreams and potential. I was the boy that got up at 6.15am to deliver milk to my village every morning for 6 years. The boy that struggled in the class room to understand the point of sitting in rows and putting my hand up to answer question. The boy who struggled to connect with the teachers who just told me what to do. The same boy who excelled at sports and loved the environments created by all of my PE and Games staff and loved the responsibility of captaining teams and representing my school and best of all doing it with my mates. I loved the challenge to #BeatTheGame and loved that tummy churning exciting feeling the night before the game and the hours after the game that I would analyse the game over and over before drifting off the sleep. As I stumbled from builder’s apprentice, through to insurance clerk and then onto printing, I finally found my calling (thanks to a drunk Danny Hodgson!) as Northumberland YDO…a job that I loved and that taught me so much. It was then onto Newcastle Falcons and my dream job of coaching the finest players from the North East in the Academy... Academy Director followed and the first opportunity to work with my great friend Peter Walton. I then got elevated to the first team (with Walts) to replace Rob Andrew who had moved to Twickenham. A steep and enjoyable learning curve that ended in the valuable lesson of a sacking… an environment where I was told to make the players hate you was clearly not the environment for me. Next adventure was down to the RFU to work with Stuart Lancaster (still the best boss that I have ever had!). We plotted the direction of travel over copious amounts of Yorkshire tea at Scotch Corner Services and then I worked tirelessly developing a great Performance Pathway and a team of fantastic people. That brings me to today, after 10 hugely exciting and enjoyable years and sacking number two, to the most excited that I have ever been… To work with people who share my values, my moral compass and my passion to make a difference to people and their environments. Hanging with Rusty is going to be inspiring, fun and I’m super excited for the adventure. 5 things that have influenced me the most: Scouts John Clarke (“Clanky” who gave lads like me a start in rugby) Steve Black Brian Lancaster (Brian Ashton and Stuart Lancaster) – couldn’t choose between them! Being a Dad – thanks Oliver, Archie and Ted Describe myself in 3 words – Enthusiastic Positive, Curious (if there was a 4th it would be funny) Russel Earnshaw "When it is time for you to leave this school, leave your job, or even leave this earth, you make sure you have worked hard to make sure it mattered you were even here" (Wes Moore 'The Other Wes Moore’) My favourite quote ever! In between the madness,I am always trying to better understand how a teenage boy with a paper-round in Middlesborough ended up where he is today. How and why did his story travel via Cambridge University and then the Premiership, allow him to win the European Cup, compete and coach for his country at both Commonwealth Games and World Cups, teach Economics by the sea for two years and spend time coaching and learning from some remarkable people. I’m curious about and obsessed with helping people... I want to better understand how individuals and teams exceed their dreams, how learning environments are nurtured and what might be possible for us all in the future. How can people live the story they want… … I am also partial to a bobble hat! I’ve consulted with and delivered for Google, the FA, GB Hockey, British Triathlon, the Rugby Football League and British Swimming to name a few… often playing the part of the nutcase in their story! The oranges came to BC Place at the weekend, ripe for picking and they were duly juiced. But Vancouver Whitecaps made it difficult for themselves in their 2-1 weekend win over Houston Dynamo before coming away with a huge three points. We look back at all the ins and outs, and highs and lows, from the match and hear from both head coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Houston's Wilmer Cabrera. It was an important win and we look ahead to another big match on Wednesday night when Cascadian rivals Seattle Sounders come a calling. We bring you three one on one interviews this week as we catch up with the two newest Whitecaps, Egyptian midfielder Aly Ghazal and American defender Aaron Maund, and talk with PRO's General Manager Peter Walton about VAR and the standard of refereeing in North America. Professional Referee Organization (PRO) general manager Peter Walton and 2016 MLS Referee of the Year Alan Kelly know thousands of armchair officials are inspecting their work closely every weekend. So what do they do to make sure they get the big calls right and let the players decide the result? More than you probably know. As the ETR Extravaganza continues, don't miss our referee special as Walton explains what his crews will focus on in 2017 and Kelly explains what it's like to be the man in the middle.
The horrorshow that was Vancouver Whitecaps 4-0 loss in DC was certainly one to forget. Yes, there were injuries and absences, but that doesn't fully excuse the defensive deficiencies, lack of creativity and the impotent attack. It was a tough one to watch but what to make of it now that the dust has settled? We look back at the defeat and some of the big questions coming out of it at both ends of the pitch for the 'Caps. Plus we look ahead to this weekend's match at Real Salt Lake. Is there anything out there that gives a sense of a better result against a much better side? The MLS Whitecaps might be having their struggles, but the USL side are still unbeaten. A large part of that lies in their solid defence and we talk to a key reason behind that, Dutch centre back Sem de Wit. The second half of our show is dedicated to refereeing. It's been the big talking point all season long, and even with some of the refereeing reigned in this past weekend, there's still some tackles that set social media abuzz. PRO (the Professional Referee Organisation) general manager Peter Walton had a conference call with media last week to discuss current refereeing directives and the red mist that's been descending down upon MLS. It covered things we feel a lot of the fans, media and players should know and hear, so we're bringing you a big chunk of it on this week's show. There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen!
We wouldn't dream of leaving you hanging during the holidays, so the boys at ETR set about creating four shows to get everyone through the end of 2014. Dec. 22: Referees (PRO's GM Peter Walton and Chris Penso) Dec. 25: Americans Abroad (Alejandro Bedoya, Herediano owner David Patey, Kabul Premier League vet Nicholas Pugliese) Dec. 29: Expansion (Atlanta MLS president Darren Earles, LAFC president and co-owner Tom Penn) Jan. 1: ETR Book Club (The Numbers Game with author David Sally)In this episode, PRO GM Peter Walton reviews the year in MLS refereeing in 2014 and what is to come in 2015. He says more than 90 percent of the calls were correct this year, and explains how they aim to improve the process even more. Referee Chris Penso then joins the guys to talk about what he gave up to pick up the whistle full time, and what it was like refereeing the inaugural Hero Indian Super League match. Email us at ExtraTime@MLSsoccer.com or tweet us at @ExtraTimeRadio. And make sure you check out our West Coast brethren at March to the Match every Wednesday!
