Sabrina Yavil, sports mom to three boys and founder of Gryme, struggled with encouraging her kids to clean up after practices and games. What's more, the boys didn't seem to want to put time into practicing for games. She began asking them to make their beds and put away their dishes in the morning and take showers after practices or games. She asked them to take more responsibility for getting their sports gear together before games. The result, she said: As they became more disciplined and responsible, their confidence grew in and out of sports. Today David considers the statement: “Coping strategies: You'll develop tools to manage pressure and stress” where he focuses on supporting coaches to improve themselves, and in turn, improve their athletes. This is a continuation of his examination into ChatGPT and its response to the question “What Can I Expect When Working With A Sport Psychologist.” David shares many insightful thoughts about the topic to be able to support coaches. With some great questions for coaches to ask themselves. Key Learning Points: How do you want your athletes to behave around your club? Do you as a coach help your athletes mind and body to work in harmony? How can you activate your parasympathetic nervous system more to influence your athletes? Coach pressures come from managing athletes, senior management, coaching colleagues, sport science staff and parents goals, expectations and personalities and much more. Fear can play a big part and influence coaches; fear of failure, fear of judgement, fear of pain, fear of regret and fear of rejection. Young athletes should respond thoughtfully to setbacks, using visualization and breath control to ensure they don't react with emotion. That's the message from Dayton Hansen, COO at ICL Academy, an online school that helps kids pursue passions such as sports. When kids learn to respond this way to mistakes or other setbacks, they'll use this lesson in other areas of their lives, he said. Professor Sophia Jowett's has conducted a lot of research into understanding the interpersonal dynamics between coaches and athletes and is instrumental in raising awareness and changing attitudes around the reciprocity of the relationship and the importance of relational qualities including mutual trust, respect, appreciation, commitment, loyalty, co-operation and collaboration. In today's episode, part 4 of David's investigation into ChatGPT's and its response to the question “What Can I Expect When Working With A Sport Psychologist” he goes on to discuss supporting a coach who receives negative feedback from athletes or players. The aim is to aid your understanding of applying psychological skills training (PST) techniques such as self- talk, relaxation and visualisation to improve the quality of the coach-athlete relationship, and in turn, positively impact both coaches' and athletes' performance and wellbeing. There are connections between the points discussed and Jowett's work. Enjoy tuning in! Key Learning Points: Coaches can benefit from being supported by Sport Psychologists too, not just athletes. As a coach understanding your own emotions and why they occur can benefit your relationships with athletes or players. When you experience negative emotions as a coach does your self-talk become judgemental? Instructional self-talk can benefit coaches to manage situations better. Allowing your self some space to breathe as a coach is useful and can help your behaviour management, as can improving your visualisation skills. As a former college athlete, youth sports coach and sports parent, Eric Collins says his biggest challenge is being a sports parent. It's sometimes hard for him to let his son follow his own sports journey, he said. One way to allow kids to embrace their own journey is to encourage them to communicate directly with coaches. This gives them important skills that will serve them in other areas of their lives, he said. Have you ever noticed that sports coaches never talk about their desire to quit working? They don't say things like, “Only 5 more years until I can retire,” or “I can't wait to finally hang it up.” Instead, they talk about their desire to coach as long as they are able. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses this unique dynamic, and why we all could learn a thing or two from the coaches in our life. This episode was inspired by the Long Beach State men's basketball team, their coach Dan Monson, and the amazing story they lived out heading into March Madness. There's so much goodness that can come from participating in youth sports, but ensuring kids experience that goodness requires teams to establish team cultures based on clear expectations of players, parents and coaches. Team agreements and ethical coaching can help create the opportunity for sports kids to benefit from all that sports offers. That's the word from Katie Steele and Dr. Tiffany Brown, co-founders of the nonprofit organization Athletes Mental Health Foundation. Brown and Steele describe how coaches and leagues can forge team agreements and focus on ethical coaching. Kids and teens say they lack connections with adults in their schools, says Paul Caccamo, CEO and founder, Up2Us Sports, a coach training program. Youth coaches can fill in the gap and build resilience, improved focus and self-esteem in young athletes, he says. Supportive coaching is shown to be effective in having a positive influence on an athlete's development, particularly when athletes are unsure of themselves, are less confident and lack mental toughness. Feel free to check out today's solo episode where I discuss compassion, mental toughness and high performance to help with the development of sports coaches and to improve the experience for athletes. Key Learning Points High performing teams such as The Lionesses recognise showing compassion is hugely beneficial to individuals and the team as a whole. Fear cultures and giving out “tough love” are thing of the past in miliary circles. In elite sport top coaches are well educated and are aware of the need to balance support and challenge with their players. Compassion can help us feel safe and protected leaving us better able to learn and develop. Sarina Weigman's response to Lauren James' red card in a recent World Cup match versus Nigeria is a classic example of compassionate coaching. As a coach how do you naturally respond to difficulties or mistakes? Dr Kristin Neff has many helpful resources on compassion. In this episode, Coaches Jake Copeland and Ed Williams from The Heritage School break down the upcoming football season for the Hawks.
This episode is a slightly different format, as I talk to a panel of game changers about a specific topic – and in this case it's women in sports coaching. Just 10% of accredited coaches at the Summer and Winter Olympics over the past decade have been female and we rarely see women in high profile coaching roles in our biggest sports. This conversation explores why this is and what needs to change? My guests for this episode were:Kelly Lindsey, Sporting Director at Lewes FC & former Head Coach of the Afghanistan women's national team and the Moroccan women's national team Giselle Mather, Director of Rugby at Ealing Trailfinders and formerly Director of Rugby at Wasps Women who was the first female Level 4 rugby coach in BritainJess Freeman, Community Coach at Harlequins & a rugby coach at DorkingSarah Kelleher, former Irish Hockey Captain who is now a national coach for teams in England and Ireland Having discussed their own experiences and journeys as women in sports coaching we explore the current gender balance in football, rugby and hockey in grassroots and elite coaching, and consider which sports are doing things well. We discuss why having more women in coaching matters, what makes a ‘good' coach and what's preventing equality. Finally we consider what needs to change for the future and my guests share some fantastic advice for other female coaches.Find out more about The Game Changers podcast here: https://www.fearlesswomen.co.uk/thegamechangersHosted by Sue AnstissProduced by Sam Walker, What Goes On MediaA Fearless Women production
Sports parents need to show their young athletes that they care about more than the win. That's the word from Wayne LaMarre, clinical professor and director of the athletic training program at the University of New England. He's also on staff for the Women's National Ice Hockey team. Often, the elite hockey players worry that they'll be replaced by someone waiting in the wings if they make mistakes or get injured. This causes anxiety and makes it difficult to form a cohensive team. LaMarre and his associates create an "oasis" for these players. "We care about the wins and losses but care more about you--your physical and mental health," he tells the players. Sports parents also need to create an oasis and show they care. LaMarre gives tips for doing this.
