I'm delighted to speak with Rusty Earnshaw and Danny Newcombe on this week's episode. Rusty is a coach and former professional rugby union player. Rusty has played Premiership rugby with West Hartlepool, Bath Rugby and Rotherham Titans, winning the European Cup whilst at Bath. In 2000 he was selected to play for the Barbarians. And he also represented England on the IRB Sevens circuit. Since his playing days he has held various positions at the Rugby Football Union, including International Performance Coach. He is now Director at The Magic Academy, which works across sport and business supporting the development of individuals and teams. Danny is a coach and coach developer. He is currently Senior Coach Development Manager at The Premier League. Until recently, he was a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Coaching and PE in the department of Sport, Health Sciences and Social Work at Oxford Brookes University, UK. He now holds a visiting research fellow post at Oxford Brookes. Danny is also an international and domestic national league hockey coach. He is currently the head coach of the Men's Welsh National Team and works extensively with a number of partners in the coach development space. I speak with Rusty and Danny about their considerable coaching experiences and we break down some of the skills they use in their own coaching practices.

Paul Martin is a magicians' magician. He has done it all in magic and got the t-shirt to prove it. Starting off as a close up magician Paul quickly dominated the industry and became the busiest close up magician in the country. Along the way he teamed up with other magicians, performed all over the world and even set up an entertainment agency. However then came the next step of Paul's journey - cabaret magic. Paul transitioned into cabaret and stage magic and once again dominated this area of the entertainment industry. After a short while he developed the concept of a Magical MC and overnight literally doubled his fee while doing less work. This led to him once again travelling the world hosting wedding, corporate events and awards dinners. Now Paul has evolved once again. He is on a mission to help magicians become more successful and make more money. To help him achieve this lofty goal he set up The Pro Magica Academy where he teaches students how to do what he has done and replicate his success.

Diety jsem držela celkem čtrnáct let. To je skoro polovina mého života. Abych zhubla, zkusila jsem úplně všechny diety, které si dokážete představit. A víte co? Někdy jsem zhubla, někdy ne, někdy to bylo snadnější, někdy těžší, ale NIKDY to doopravdy nefungovalo. Proč? Protože mi to nikdy nepřineslo to, po čem moje tělo skutečně toužilo: SVOBODU v jídle a ÚLEVU. Úlevu od všech těch myšlenek, pravidel a restrikcí. Dlouhé roky jsem se neustále dokola snažila mít ještě větší vůli, ještě větší disciplínu, abych se nakonec vždy cítila jako ještě větší selhání, bez ohledu na výsledek. Dnes vás s sebou vezmu hluboko do svých emocí, minulosti a svěřím se vám se vším, co jsem se během let neúspěšného dietaření naučila. Že naše tělo je moudré, měli bychom se naučit ho opět vnímat, a zahodit diety jednou provždy za hlavu, a namísto toho vzít sovu sílu zpět do svých rukou. Rusty chats with Maximiliano Jorge "Max" Caldas the very well respected Argentine field hockey defender, who made his debut for the national squad in 1994, and competed for his native country in the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2004 Summer Olympics.Since 2010 Maximiliano Caldas is the Dutch women's national team coach. On the 2012 Olympics he won gold as a coach with the Dutch women's. They also grabbed the gold at the first edition of the Hockey World League in 2013. In June 2014 he won his third gold with the Dutch women at the Hockey World Cup in The Hague. He is now in charge of the Dutch men's hockey team.

Prior to delivering a Tutor Training event for the Scottish FA, Greig Paterson and Lewis Irons caught up with Russell Earnshaw. A former international rugby player and coach, ‘Rusty’ now spends his time leading ‘The Magic Academy’ alongside colleague John Fletcher, and he spent time with us speaking candidly about his curiosity in trying to attain the best coaching sessions possible, through his years of experience. A combination of wonderful people and experiences that have supported and challenged me, mixed in with a variety of crucial yet difficult experiences have made me who and what I am today… unbelievably optimistic and positive about what everybody can achieve and obsessed with helping people fulfil their dreams and potential. I was the boy that got up at 6.15am to deliver milk to my village every morning for 6 years. The boy that struggled in the class room to understand the point of sitting in rows and putting my hand up to answer question. The boy who struggled to connect with the teachers who just told me what to do. The same boy who excelled at sports and loved the environments created by all of my PE and Games staff and loved the responsibility of captaining teams and representing my school and best of all doing it with my mates. I loved the challenge to #BeatTheGame and loved that tummy churning exciting feeling the night before the game and the hours after the game that I would analyse the game over and over before drifting off the sleep. As I stumbled from builder’s apprentice, through to insurance clerk and then onto printing, I finally found my calling (thanks to a drunk Danny Hodgson!) as Northumberland YDO…a job that I loved and that taught me so much. It was then onto Newcastle Falcons and my dream job of coaching the finest players from the North East in the Academy... Academy Director followed and the first opportunity to work with my great friend Peter Walton. I then got elevated to the first team (with Walts) to replace Rob Andrew who had moved to Twickenham. A steep and enjoyable learning curve that ended in the valuable lesson of a sacking… an environment where I was told to make the players hate you was clearly not the environment for me. Next adventure was down to the RFU to work with Stuart Lancaster (still the best boss that I have ever had!). We plotted the direction of travel over copious amounts of Yorkshire tea at Scotch Corner Services and then I worked tirelessly developing a great Performance Pathway and a team of fantastic people. That brings me to today, after 10 hugely exciting and enjoyable years and sacking number two, to the most excited that I have ever been… To work with people who share my values, my moral compass and my passion to make a difference to people and their environments. I want to better understand how individuals and teams exceed their dreams, how learning environments are nurtured and what might be possible for us all in the future.
