Talking Apes wraps up 2024 in a big fun way! Kevin (Proximus Caesar) Durand and Bobby (Cornelius) Porter leave video messages. We tally up the final box office results of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as well as go over the recent sequel news. We had to talk about South Carolina's inadvertent live production of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. How many of us cheered when primates escaped from a research facility and were “just being goofy monkeys jumping back and forth playing with each other” (actual quote from CBS News). Like us, did you hope the 43 escaped monkeys were going to take over humanity? We read more of your comments on the Planet of the Apes TV series and Talking Apes anniversaries. And there is still more to go. How many saw Rick Baker's classic Apes display set up in his yard for Trick or Treaters on Halloween night? Unfortunately we did not see it live but gathered lots of video and pics as well as the gruesome footage of Rick demolishing the sets the day after. (Be forewarned it is really hard to watch.) Since we are so proud of our efforts from last year, we'll replay our melodically and on key ‘14 episodes of Planet of the Apes' to the tune of ‘12 Days of Christmas'! You're welcome! Talking Apes turns 10! Or as it was called a decade ago - Talking Apes TV when it premiered on Oct. 6th, 2014. Original co-host Mark (“Mellow Kubrick”) Oguschewitz is back to run down memorable moments with a heartfelt tribute to our first Talking Apes Facebook admin., Angela Rushmere. We play the intro to the very first episode including the ear-worm that sounds like a chimpanzee giving birth, ‘Ape Shuffle'. In a congratulatory message, Bobby Porter thanks the vast Apes crew, and we read your thoughtful social media comments. We continue our Planet of the Apes TV show 50th Anniversary celebration and Mark gives his favorite episode, scene, and supporting character. He weighs in about who the better gorilla military leader is: Urko, Ursus, Aldo, and this time we include Proximus! The debate continues as what Urko's title is - General or Chief of Security (or both). What do you think? And to round out this big episode we go back to Ape City to trick or treat. What's the worst that could happen when humans go door to door looking for candy and bananas? Bobby Porter reprises his role as Cornelious Jr., first time he's done so in 50 years. What would it take for our future to look like the one depicted in the Planet of the Apes franchise? We love it when one of our topics needs no introduction. Certainly, you've seen at least one movie in the Planet of the Apes franchise, right? One of the most venerated film series in sci-fi history, and with good reason! So in this episode, we're diving into the central question of the entire franchise: is it possible that apes will evolve far enough to match humans in intellect, reason, and more?Hakeem will take you through the evolutionary and physiological questions posed by the franchise, as well as some compelling studies that indicate that some elements might just be possible. Tamara breaks down the central concept of ape evolution through the lens of three films in the franchise: the original classic Planet of the Apes (1968), Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake (2011), and series reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011). Get your bananas ready, because we're (sorry) going ape this week!Remember that you can join in on the conversation in the comments on our YouTube page, so be sure to like, subscribe, and come back for more!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Here are a few recommendations!EvolutionYou can't discuss anything related to the Planet of the Apes franchise without first understanding the concept that human beings evolved from these relatives of ours. How far we've come is another story.Macaque Speech Experiment“The narrative my entire life has been that [primates] just don't have the physiology [for speech]...But it turns out [that macaques] do have all the physiological qualities necessary for speech. But what they don't have is the brain. If they had a human brain in their physiology, they would be speaking.”Upright Walking“Look at the ape behavior in Planet of the Apes. Clearly, it's a brain change. If you think about it, there's really three different things. One, they're thinking like us using emotion and logic. Two, they're speaking. And three, they're walking upright, they're no longer knuckle-walkers. That last one to me is actually the most difficult one, because the research seems to show that if they have the brain change that we've already had, and of course we're relatives, then they could be speaking, being rational, and reasoning the same way we do. But how do you go from knuckle walker to upright walker? That's another piece of recent research.”La Planète des singes You guessed it, this French novel by Pierre Boulle is better known as the source material for Planet of the Apes! Sometimes you'll find it under that title, other times as Monkey Planet. Either way, it's not the exact same story as the film, and features its own twist ending. SUGGESTED VIEWINGThe Planet of the Apes franchise is VAST and might seem a little intimidating to folks who aren't familiar with it yet. But for the purposes of what's discussed in this episode, all you need to watch is Planet of the Apes (the original 1968 classic starring Charlton Heston), the 2001 remake directed by Tim Burton and starring Mark Wahlberg (which is better than you've probably heard, but isn't the most essential entry), and 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which serves as both a reboot of and prequel to the original series of films…and whose sequels lead directly up to this summer's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (in theaters now). However, for those of you who want to go ape (sorry, sorry, we're trying to delete it) on the Planet of the Apes franchise, here's the official Does it Fly? approved viewing order. As a general rule, we firmly believe in watching things in the order they were released, rather than where they take place on the timeline. The franchise begins with five films:Planet of the Apes (1968)Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971)Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)These original five movies range from genuine classics (the first is one of the great sci-fi films of all time) to cult flicks that are still absolutely worth your time. Less essential, but still cool for completists, is the 1973-1974 Planet of the Apes TV series, which seems to take place earlier in the timeline than the original films but may or may not be canon. This was followed by an animated series, Return to the Planet of the Apes, which might take place further in the future than Battle for the Planet of the Apes, but in all likelihood isn't canon at all. Similarly, the 2011 Tim Burton Planet of the Apes movie is a completely different timeline/story, so you can ignore it if you wish (well, except to understand the stuff that we discuss in this episode). Then there's the modern series, which could be watched as prequels to the original films, but are really just the start of a brand new franchise. They're all good, but both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes (both directed by Matt Reeves of The Batman fame) are two of the best sci-fi movies of the 21st Century. The order is as follows…Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) Get watching!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?The new era of Doctor Who is in full swing on Disney+ right now, so in case you missed it, now would be a great time to revisit our Who-centric episode about the TARDIS!And for everyone keeping up with Star Trek: Discovery every Thursday (as well as Trek fans of all kinds) we broke down the plausibility of the transporter right here.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Michael and Jacob Bean-Watson talk about Fox's final effort to get a Planet of the Apes TV series going, this time with a Saturday morning cartoon on NBC. (Michael probably says CBS in the discussion, but that was the live-action show. Fox partnered with a different network for the cartoon.) Return to the Planet of the Apes featured animation by Jonny Quest creator Doug Wildey and the voices of Austin Stoker (MacDonald in Battle for the Planet of the Apes) and Fred Flintstone himself, Henry Corden. There are plenty of problems with the cartoon, but also lots of fun. Especially when Jacob and Michael spontaneously create their own Planet of the Apes sitcom.
Michael and Jacob Bean-Watson watch the short-lived, but (let's just spoil it) excellent live action Planet of the Apes TV series starring Roddy McDowall, Ron Harper, James Naughton, and Star Trek's Mark Lenard.
Happy Holidays to all the cheerful chimps, festive gorillas, jolly orangutans, and you damn dirty humanoids. We are so excited about this all-new power-packed episode. First, we have a treat for you! Do you ever forget what the exact Planet of the Apes TV episodes were about and where they fall in order? We came up with an ape-themed rendition of “The 12 days of Christmas” but summarizing the series episodes. But wait, aren't there 14 episodes? You are so right so we made an extended version. (Caution: Richard and Kevin are not singers so listen with caution.) To make it all the much better, we asked Dr. Zaius to step in. Let us know if this rendition helps you remember. Also on this Holiday Special, we continue our colorful commentary of Marvel's ADVENTURES ON THE PLANET OF THE APES adaptation series (1975-1976). Here, we will break down the fifth of six issues, titled - INTO THE FORBIDDEN ZONE! Thank you to those who sent in holiday greetings! Now get ready for 2024, the year we go APe-ril! After the disappointment of Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the franchise limped on in the form of two short-lived television series. First came 1974's live-action Planet of the Apes TV series, followed the next year by the animated project Return to the Planet of the Apes. Neither caught on with fans, and despite a long development, a new film didn't arrive until 2001. Lauren Knight of That Movie Is Fine joins the show to discuss director Tim Burton's "reimagining" of Planet of the Apes. We'll discuss the movie's poor reputation despite box office success, the performances by the likes of Mark Wahlberg and Tim Roth, and of course, that mystifying twist ending. We're back! After another looooong hiatus, Talking Apes returns with a super episode! Richard Woloski and Kevin Toft look ahead to what's coming up in Apes fandom. In April we get the new Marvel comic series, the first since 1975. Then in 2024 we can look forward to the next film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes! We go over the recent casting news and speculate on what writers, Rick Jaffa and Amanada Silver, said in recent interviews. Also, we finish up the series where we break down the unproduced Planet of the Apes TV series scripts and synopses. There were eight unproduced stories, four of which are in script form where in past episodes we did readings with a full cast. Now, we review the last four story synopses. These include “The Trek”, “Freedom Road”, “The Mine”, and “The Trial”. What is your opinion of these stories? And which Ape TV-Verse do you prefer: these unproduced stories or the plots the CBS shows gave us? You can find the synopses here. The scripts can be found here. Now, GO APE! Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to screenwriter Ethan Lawrence about his screenwriter father Anthony Lawrence, who might be one of the most prolific film and television writers in the history of the Writers Guild with close to 500 credits to his name. From Elvis films like Roustabout to biopics to series like Outer Limits and Bonanza to sci-fi cult favorite The Phoenix, Lawrence career spans five decades. Believe it or not, he's still writing short films and novels today. Ethan talks to us about growing up with his four siblings in Palos Verdes and later Ojai, California and spins yarns involving everyone from Shelley Winters and Kurt Russel on the set of the John Carpenter Elvis TV movie, to doing karate with Chuck Norris as a kid, hanging with actor Judson Scott at his house as The Phoenix imploded and the anything goes insanity of spending summers at the Manitoba ranch of hockey legend, The Golden Jet, Bobby Hull. If shows like The Sixth Sense with Cary Collins, The Planet of the Apes TV series or Hawaii 5-0 with Jack Lord mean anything to you, you must take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

They'll also delve into such mesmerizing topics as the Winter Soldier (kind of), the role of chickens on the Planet of the Apes, how the show has changed since the early episodes and the many surprising differences between the episode and its novelization. Hey Hey Ape fans! Welcome back to Talking Apes TV! We are the podcast that takes an entertaining look at each episode of the Planet Of The Apes TV series from 1974 to find out why it still stands up after 40 years. "The Liberator" is the 13th episode of the series and the most controversial because of its subject matter of slavery and atomic bombs. Many sources list this episode as "Unaired" - possibly because it was pre-empted in one or two major markets. However, both CBS-TV records and Neilsen Ratings data testify that it was shown in some areas. In "The Liberator" Alan, Pete and Galen are captured by a village who is forced to give up five human slaves to their ape overlords to work in the mines. The leader of the village sacrifices the unwilling humans to their god in a fatal ceremony. The temple where this is held turns out to be an ancient ruin where a poisonous invisible gas is manufactured. We also reveal the final winners of our Planet Of The Apes TV soundtrack! Thanks once again to LaLa Land Records for donating these CD's. Next week we look at the FINAL episode, "Up Above The World So High." Hey Hey Ape fans! I know we promised we were going to go into "The Interrogation" episode on this show, but we're going to take a break and talk with artist PAUL BATEMAN. For the Star Wars fans out there you may know him as Ralph McQuarrie's apprentice. (Monty Sanzo-tera we know you were looking forward to "The Interrogation" so don't worry it's coming.) We also want to remind everyone about our Planet Of The Apes TV soundtrack giveaway. La-La Land Records has graciously given us three copies to give away. We are giving 1 CD set to any new Likes on Facebook, we are giving away 2 CD sets to reviews on iTunes. If you've already 'liked' us or gave a review then you are automatically entered. The winner will be chosen midnight Monday 2/16 and announced on our 2/19 episode. And you will have until midnight on March 19 to claim your prize. If you don't claim your prize it will go to the next Ape. Come back to our next episode where we will not only go into "The Interrogation" episode but also tell you about the autograph signings held at Dark Delicacies on Feb. 7 where we met Ron Harper (Alan Virdon), Lou Wagner (Lucius), Gary Dubin (the "Look It's a Man" child gorilla) and many more Apes luminaries. Happy Holidays Ape Fans! Welcome to the holiday episode of Talking Apes TV! We are the podcast that takes an in-depth look at each episode of the Planet Of The Apes TV series from 1974 to find out why it still stands up after 40 years. This was also the year that kids were asking Santa for the newest toys and games like Twister, Connect 4, and, GI Joe with the Kung Fu grip. Join Richard and Mark as they say their goodbye to TV's Dr. Zaius, Booth Colman, in our opinion the best of the Zaius'. In this episode, "The Surgeon", which aired 10/25/1974, Alan is shot by a gorilla patrol. Galen and Pete take him to a medical center where we meet Dr. Kyra (Played by Jacqueline Scott who portrayed Zantes in the "Good Seeds"), someone special from Galen's past.
