Alright, Spookies, we finally finished making our way through the OG flicks, which means it's time to start talking reboots. That's right, we've circled so far through PLANET OF THE APE-RIL that we're now right back at the beginning with Planet of the Apes (2001). For take two of the franchise, Tim Burton teamed up with Mark Wahlberg and Helena Bonham Carter to see if they had something new to add to the conversation, but studio meddling may have caused some major problems. Join us for a new Spooky Tuesday as we discuss how it stacks up to the originals, its fidelity to the Pierre Boulle novel, and the way Rick Baker finally got the tightline right. Today Matt & Todd discuss the 1968 Sci-Fi Classic: Planet of the Apes, directed by Franklin J Schaffner, based on a novel by Pierre Boulle.Starring: Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans and Kim Hunter.Screenplay co-credited to Michael Wilson and Rod Serling.A groundbreaking success when it first appeared in 1968; Planet of the Apes is a rapid-paced fish-out-of-water tale of a group of astronauts who crash-land on a mysterious planet inhabited by a civilization of advanced apes determined to destroy humanity. The original Planet of the Apes feels more at home in the realm of Star Trek and Twilight Zone (also created by original Planet of the Apes screenwriter: Rod Serling.)Even if you have not seen the film you're likely aware of the ending, and some of the more memorable lines. This is a film that still holds up as pure entertainment, award-wining makeup effects that still look remarkable, and an engaging plot that offers something enduring to consider about human nature. If this is your first time watching, we'd love to hear what you think. If you like this film we can recommend:The Omega Man, Last Man on Earth, World Without End, The Terminator, The Time Travelers*, Star Trek (in particular the classic series) and The Twilight Zone.----------Follow Matt on Letterboxd, Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois, as Marcus at Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful and follow what we follow at Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out Podcast

Escuchamos canciones inspiradas en la historia por Shabam en 1976 (On The Planet Of The Apes) y el cantante cristiano Mark Cox (I Feel Like An Alien On The Planet Of The Apes).

The natural world and human nature provide a variety of jumping off points for three poems that contrast the ego and experience of each poem's speaker with other perspectives, both observed and imagined. The discussion touches on the use of a strong opening conceit, lineation that cannily reflects breathwork, and leaning into specificity as strong poetic moves. Let's not forget the role that taste plays! Kathy's internal sommelier springs to life twice to flag questionable taste in wine and a discussion of the third poem under discussion highlights the role that direct experience and cultural awareness can play in appreciating the landscape of a poem. The discussion also briefly lingers on the question of whether singer Dionne Warwick is still alive and well and performing. At the time of writing these notes, she most certainly is!   Some links we think you might like:    The Spin Doctors Dionne Warwick, Do You Know the Way to San Jose (YouTube)   At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, Lisa Zerkle, Jason Schneiderman, Manuel López, Isabel Petry, Vivian Liu (sound engineer) John Wojtowicz grew up working on his family's azalea and rhododendron nursery and still lives in the backwoods of what Ginsberg dubbed “nowhere Zen New Jersey.” Currently, he teaches social work at Stockton University. This unexpected sanctuary,  strategically located  between Russia and Alaska,  has a post-apocalyptic feel  like the Statue of Liberty scene  at the end of the first Planet of the Apes, but cuter. White-coated inhabitants  can be seen sunning themselves  on the front porch,  poking frosty heads from turquoise  window frames, wandering  their 2.8 mile yard littered with rusted tanks  and construction debris. Pierre Boulle never wrote  a sequel to the Planet of the Apes.  Man loses. The End.  And with earth's history of ruling classes and our self-destructive tendencies, this is the likely scenario. If by some grace, we go out without taking  every living thing with us,  it gives me pleasure to picture  a sleuth of grizzly bears  as the heirs to Buckingham Palace.  As a whole, extraterrestrial  anthropologists will have to assume,  we cared very little  about the arctic fox, musk ox, and polar bear,  dooming these lifeforms  (and then ourselves). And even though I didn't do much to stop it,  I hope they'll find  the remains of my glacial wall calendar  and arctic-themed necktie  or better yet the yellowed receipt  from a donation I plan on making to the World Wildlife Fund and conclude that I was one of the good ones.      Wild    The rugs haven't been cut in a long while and the shag is starting to tickle my chin. It's up to my neck which is sometimes  how I feel navigating the jungle of my life  which germinated from the garden of my childhood and went mostly untended  for the first quarter or so. Yes, it's been some time  since I backpacked through nightclubs, traversed the landscape of closing time, tossed the map on an LSD trip. Right now, I am dead-heading petunias  on my back deck. My two kids  are sleeping. The dog is chasing  lightning bugs. My wife is finishing a glass of Moscato and will soon be  waiting for me in our bed. Earlier today  I added boat-tailed grackle  to my backyard bird list. My zucchini is starting to flower and so is (for the first time)  the southern magnolia  planted a few springs back.  The groundhog I nicknamed Big Orange is on his hindlegs  taking in the evening news. And as the sun moves to give someone else a turn with the light, I consider that this might be the wildest I've ever been.

Fun ! Passion ! Singerie ! Ape City News - Ep#0 - Un Jeu de Rôle Planet of the Apes pour cet automne ! RICH HANDLEY a également participé.

What would it take for our future to look like the one depicted in the Planet of the Apes franchise? We love it when one of our topics needs no introduction. Certainly, you've seen at least one movie in the Planet of the Apes franchise, right? One of the most venerated film series in sci-fi history, and with good reason! So in this episode, we're diving into the central question of the entire franchise: is it possible that apes will evolve far enough to match humans in intellect, reason, and more?Hakeem will take you through the evolutionary and physiological questions posed by the franchise, as well as some compelling studies that indicate that some elements might just be possible. Tamara breaks down the central concept of ape evolution through the lens of three films in the franchise: the original classic Planet of the Apes (1968), Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake (2011), and series reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011). Get your bananas ready, because we're (sorry) going ape this week!Remember that you can join in on the conversation in the comments on our YouTube page, so be sure to like, subscribe, and come back for more!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Here are a few recommendations!EvolutionYou can't discuss anything related to the Planet of the Apes franchise without first understanding the concept that human beings evolved from these relatives of ours. How far we've come is another story.Macaque Speech Experiment“The narrative my entire life has been that [primates] just don't have the physiology [for speech]...But it turns out [that macaques] do have all the physiological qualities necessary for speech. But what they don't have is the brain. If they had a human brain in their physiology, they would be speaking.”Upright Walking“Look at the ape behavior in Planet of the Apes. Clearly, it's a brain change. If you think about it, there's really three different things. One, they're thinking like us using emotion and logic. Two, they're speaking. And three, they're walking upright, they're no longer knuckle-walkers. That last one to me is actually the most difficult one, because the research seems to show that if they have the brain change that we've already had, and of course we're relatives, then they could be speaking, being rational, and reasoning the same way we do. But how do you go from knuckle walker to upright walker? That's another piece of recent research.”La Planète des singes You guessed it, this French novel by Pierre Boulle is better known as the source material for Planet of the Apes! Sometimes you'll find it under that title, other times as Monkey Planet. Either way, it's not the exact same story as the film, and features its own twist ending. SUGGESTED VIEWINGThe Planet of the Apes franchise is VAST and might seem a little intimidating to folks who aren't familiar with it yet. But for the purposes of what's discussed in this episode, all you need to watch is Planet of the Apes (the original 1968 classic starring Charlton Heston), the 2001 remake directed by Tim Burton and starring Mark Wahlberg (which is better than you've probably heard, but isn't the most essential entry), and 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which serves as both a reboot of and prequel to the original series of films…and whose sequels lead directly up to this summer's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (in theaters now). However, for those of you who want to go ape (sorry, sorry, we're trying to delete it) on the Planet of the Apes franchise, here's the official Does it Fly? approved viewing order. As a general rule, we firmly believe in watching things in the order they were released, rather than where they take place on the timeline. The franchise begins with five films:Planet of the Apes (1968)Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971)Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)These original five movies range from genuine classics (the first is one of the great sci-fi films of all time) to cult flicks that are still absolutely worth your time. Less essential, but still cool for completists, is the 1973-1974 Planet of the Apes TV series, which seems to take place earlier in the timeline than the original films but may or may not be canon. This was followed by an animated series, Return to the Planet of the Apes, which might take place further in the future than Battle for the Planet of the Apes, but in all likelihood isn't canon at all. Similarly, the 2011 Tim Burton Planet of the Apes movie is a completely different timeline/story, so you can ignore it if you wish (well, except to understand the stuff that we discuss in this episode). Then there's the modern series, which could be watched as prequels to the original films, but are really just the start of a brand new franchise. They're all good, but both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes (both directed by Matt Reeves of The Batman fame) are two of the best sci-fi movies of the 21st Century. The order is as follows…Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)  Get watching!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?The new era of Doctor Who is in full swing on Disney+ right now, so in case you missed it, now would be a great time to revisit our Who-centric episode about the TARDIS!And for everyone keeping up with Star Trek: Discovery every Thursday (as well as Trek fans of all kinds) we broke down the plausibility of the transporter right here.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, this film not only redefined a genre but also left an indelible mark on popular culture with its innovative makeup, provocative themes, and its famously shocking ending."Planet of the Apes" stars Charlton Heston as George Taylor, an astronaut who, along with his crew, crash-lands on a mysterious planet in the distant future. They soon discover that this world is dominated by intelligent apes who speak, use tools, and rule the planet, while humans are mute and enslaved. The film follows Taylor's capture, struggle to communicate, and eventual escape with the help of two sympathetic chimpanzee scientists, Cornelius and Zira. As Taylor fights for survival and understanding, he uncovers the shocking truth about the planet and the origins of its ape civilization. The narrative is rich with allegory, dealing heavily with themes of race, science, and the pitfalls of human arrogance. At its core, the film challenges viewers to reconsider what it means to be civilized and human. It explores the dynamics of power, the dangers of unchecked technological advancement, and the moral questions surrounding animal rights and human nature. For any fan of science fiction and cinema, "Planet of the Apes" is a must-watch for its bold storytelling, special effects, and its impact on the genre. The film not only entertains but also provokes thought, making it a classic that resonates through the ages. So, whether you're revisiting this seminal work or experiencing its wonders for the first time, join us on Bad Dads Film Review as we explore the depths of "Planet of the Apes" and what it tells us about our world, our future, and ourselves.
