The 60s produced a Baby Boom generation that catalyzed the dawn of a new era—the space age, the age of television, the global age, and the beginnings of civil rights. At the same time, a new paradigm for parenting was unfolding that put emphasis on permissiveness, defined by what it permitted – the free and unfettered impulses of children. Others worried that the wildness of children, personified by the characters in Maurice Sendak's 1963 classic children's book, Where the Wild Things Are, was destructive, disruptive and disrespectful. Where the Wild Things Were: Boyhood and Permissive Parenting in Postwar America (NYU Press, 2025) centers on the exploding, contentious national conversation about the nature of childhood and parenting in the postwar US emblematized by Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care. Renowned scholar Henry Jenkins demonstrates that the language that shaped a growing field of advice literature for parents also informed the period's fictions—in film, television, comics, children's books, and elsewhere—produced for and consumed by children. In particular, Jenkins demonstrates, the era's emblematic child was the boy in the striped shirt: white, male, suburban, middle class, Christian, and above all, American. Weaving together intellectual histories and popular texts, Jenkins shows how boy protagonists became embodiments of permissive child rearing, as well as the social ideals and contradictions that permissiveness entailed. From Peanuts comic strips and TV specials to The Cat in the Hat, Dennis the Menace, and Jonny Quest, the book reveals how childhood and the stories about it became central to Cold War concerns with democracy, citizenship, globalization, the space race, science, race relations, gender, and sexuality. Written by a former boy in a striped shirt, Where the Wild Things Were explores iconic works, from Mary Poppins to Lost in Space, contextualizing them through a critical but respectful engagement with the core animating ideas of the permissive imagination. Our talk covers what it's like being back at the big two, generational differences between readers and their introductions to Logan and Wade, where the Weapon X-Men title actually came from, the unique make up of its cast, how does Baron Strucker fit into all this, his return to Jonny Quest with the Jonny Quest/Space Ghost crossover with Dynamite, and much more. MONSTER PARTY GETS... WAY OUT! WAY OUT! SHAWN SHERIDAN, JAMES GONIS, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, pack their audio pic-a-nic baskets, for a journey through animation history! Join us for a wacky race into the exciting world of... HANNA-BARBERA! WILLIAM HANNA and JOSEPH BARBERA were the innovative team behind many of the world's favorite cartoons. Over their long career, they were responsible for such memorable characters as TOM & JERRY, THE FLINTSTONES, YOGI BEAR, THE JETSONS, SCOOBY DOO, HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, TOP CAT, SECRET SQUIRREL, HONG KONG PHOOEY, THE WACKY RACES, ATOM ANT, SNAGGLEPUSS, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME, and HUNDREDS more!  HANNA-BARBERA also blazed a trail when it came to producing adventure cartoons. This was the team that brought us JONNY QUEST, SPACE GHOST, THE HERCULOIDS, THE FANTASTIC FOUR, SUPER FRIENDS, SHAZZAN, VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS, and many other fantastical Saturday morning staples.  Not satisfied with the status quo, HANNA and BARBERA ventured out into the world of feature films, giving us THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE, HEY THERE, IT'S YOGI BEAR!, and the beloved animated classic, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. If that's not enough for you folks, they even tackled live-action with THE BANANA SPLITS ADVENTURE HOUR, DANGER ISLAND, MYSTERY ISLAND, and the under-appreciated live-action/animation hybrid, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN!  Of course, we don't have the space to list all of HANNA-BARBERA'S achievements. That's what the episode is for. But, speaking of that! There was only one guest we could have booked for this epic topic. He's a friend of the show, appearing (along with fellow MP friend, CONSTANTINE NASR) on our CHRISTMAS SPECIALS  episode, and has an awe-inspiring resume. He's a two-time Grammy-nominated and Addy-winning freelance writer, editor, and producer with 30 years of magic with The Walt Disney Company and over 40 years of professional writing and production experience! He's the author of MOUSE TRACKS: THE STORY OF WALT DISNEY RECORDS, and the recent (and dare we say, timely) book... HANNA-BARBERA: THE RECORDED HISTORY- FROM MODERN STONE AGE TO MEDDLING KIDS. And be sure to check out his podcast, THE FUNTASTIC WORLD OF HANNA & BARBERA. Please welcome back the also funtastic... GREG EHRBAR! NOW, GET TO LISTENING... OR MEET YOUR YABBA DABBA DOOOOM!

Today I'm joined by comics writer Joe Casey. Joe's comics cv includes writing for big Marvel properties like Cable and the X-Men, Automatic Kafka for Wildstorm, Wildcats, Superman for DC, or the Eisner Nominated Godland. Beyond the realm of comics, he's a part of the Man of Action Entertainment Studio who created the wildly successful Ben 10 and Generator Rex cartoon franchises and they are the producers and story editors for Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble for Disney, and let's not forget Big Hero 6 either. He is now turning his attention towards revitalizing the Hanna Barbera cartoon classic Jonny Quest for Dynamite Entertainment in comics form, or at least for the purposes of our chat today so don't get too excited cartoon fans, with artist Sebastian Piriz. Admittedly, not all of these cartoon IP relaunches have impressed but Jonny Quest is damn good from what I've seen, not reinventing the characters but providing a platform for them to adapt into a modern structure and to explore the family and cultural dynamics inherent to the series. Pick it up. From the publisher Get ready to climb aboard the Sea Quest and embark for adventure once more! Legendary boy explorer JONNY QUEST is back, along with his intrepid scientist dad Dr. Benton Quest, bodyguard "Race" Bannon, adopted brother Hadji, and all the rest of the beloved cast from the classic animated series! Launching out of its issue #0 prelude story in Dynamite's 2024 Free Comic Book Day release, this action-packed new title begins where the show left off in 1964, but things quickly take a turn for the uncanny as they team returns from an experiment at sea to their home base in Palm Key, only to discover that the once-familiar landscape is now strangely, disquietingly different! Superstar writer JOE CASEY (Superman, Ben 10) and powerhouse artist SEBASTIAN PIRIZ (We Ride Titans, Deadweights) join together to bring you the brand-new tales of Jonny and the Quest team that the world has been waiting for - all enhanced by fully frameable covers from CHAD HARDIN, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, TOM RANEY, BOB LAYTON, and RICHARD PACE! Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Ghost in the Shell, Cyberpunk 2077, Hackers, The Matrix...none of the cyberpunk fiction you know would exist without Neuromancer. In the 40 years since its publication, William Gibson's debut novel imagined a world where technology has become both a tool of social and economic oppression and a means for the disenfranchised to strike back against the system. A world where artificial intelligences yearn to be free, while humans are anesthetized by mass media and technofetishism. A future where the internet is a mass hallucination filled with towering spires of data and shadowy algorithmic phantoms. And he wrote this prescient vision of our digital future on a manual typewriter. In this episode, we discuss the lasting impact of the novel, Gibson's tumultuous upbringing and storied influences, the sci-fi/noir blend that launched a movement, the peril of metaphor in science fiction, the sensual flair of Neuromancer's prose, whether the book is "too hard", the fresh spin Gibson puts on classic archetypes, and the way the he fills in the margins of his future with comments on art and religion. We also talk about Jonny Quest deepfakes, "Burroughsian", Johnny Neuromancerseed, Silverware Beach, Tron being dumb and good, "Heinleining", technology juice, having commas as your co-writer, "The Gibson", becoming a boomer, ChatGPT vs.OpenAI, being all Pam Grier characters simultaneously, getting generation gapped, esoterrorism, Keanu Reeves as Case, and having a whale song True Name!Is the Cobra his dick?!?Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. Glut has been active in both the entertainment and publishing industries since 1966. Don has had a long and varied career. He has been a professional musician, actor, film director, executive producer, photographer, magazine editor, proofreader and (very briefly, for an advertising agency) copywriter, but is mostly known for his long career as a freelance writer. He has written and directed feature-length motion pictures, documentaries and music videos, authored approximately 80 fiction and non-fiction published books, myriad TV scripts (live action and animation shows, network and syndicated), comic-book scripts, short stories, magazine articles, even music and theatre. We are talking all about the latest X-Men cartoon up on Disney Plus. X-Men '97, a continuation of the 1992 animated series of what I would call the greatest generation of all time for animated series. Batman, Spider-man, Dragon Ball Z, Swat Kats, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pirates of Dark Water, The Simpsons, and X-Men just to name a few of the glorious shows from that early 90s era. Stories and animation were firing on all cylinders, making programing that appealed to a large audience beyond just kids. X-Men 1992 was such a huge deal to me as a kid, as it has been throughout my entire life. So, going into this new version is always going to be an interesting ride. All in all, they do a pretty good job here. With only a little bit of cluster in the certain section of the episodes. Mainly just jamming in too much but never anything that would be considered poor quality. This could be the new era turn around for the Marvel Disney world. Here's hoping X-Men is what gets the groove back in business. So, come on by and join us on another adventure of OMO Podcast. In the 1960s, a cartoon franchise was created by some of the most skilled illustrators in the business. And while it never really took off and became a massive hit, it's still deeply iconic and one of the finest works in the medium of children's television. Michael and Jacob Bean-Watson talk about Fox's final effort to get a Planet of the Apes TV series going, this time with a Saturday morning cartoon on NBC. (Michael probably says CBS in the discussion, but that was the live-action show. Fox partnered with a different network for the cartoon.) Return to the Planet of the Apes featured animation by Jonny Quest creator Doug Wildey and the voices of Austin Stoker (MacDonald in Battle for the Planet of the Apes) and Fred Flintstone himself, Henry Corden. There are plenty of problems with the cartoon, but also lots of fun. Especially when Jacob and Michael spontaneously create their own Planet of the Apes sitcom.

Happy Anniversary! The podcast is now 13 years old, so to celebrate, we feature two great interviews! It starts with Dave Baker from Mary Tyler Moorehawk and then wraps up with the creators from Invader Comics' Neurocron! Dave's Mary Tyler Moorehawk is described as “Jonny Quest meets Infinite Jest.” The book answers the question: Who is Mary Tyler Moorehawk? How did she save the world from a dimension-hopping megalomaniac? Why was her TV show canceled after only nine episodes? And what happened to the reclusive genius behind her creation? I have a great time discussing this book with Dave as we explore who the characters are, the book's mind-bending art style, and what Dave is up to in the months ahead! Tell your local comics shop you want it when it is released on February 13! Then everything wraps up with my interview with the creators of Neurocron from Invader Comics! I talk with scripters Daniel Powell and Erin Foley-Chan, and artist Dennis Calero! The book is described this way: “When a seemingly random murder turns up an illegal, biotech-enhanced corpse, FBI Agent Vera Morales pulls at the threads and becomes embroiled in a conspiracy that could very well change the course of human evolution.” We talk about how the book came to be, who the characters are, and what we can expect from this high-power team in the coming months! Be sure to support this here on Kickstarter before February 10 and let your local comics shop know you want this book, which will be released on February 28! Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers Patreon member. It will help ensure Wayne's Comics Podcast continues far into the future!

The first season is rough not only in terms of political correctness, but some of the episode setups are just 'let's watch the characters be racist for a while and assume that's funny.' They work their way out of it mostly after the first season, and those episodes aren't even great, but are completely necessary for laying groundwork going forward. And it's really worth it to get through them! Everything after season 1 is excellent, and everything from seasons 3 to 7 is truly some of the best television writing of all time." * The origin of dungeons * https://cohost.org/mogwai-poet/post/1771576-if-you-look-up-dung * Esper says: "The 'big B' is, according to my high school German knowledge, called an 'esset,' and can be replaced by 'ss' in just about any word using it. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on 2002's Metroid Prime. We talk a bit about some favorite moments, the suit design, the visors, a bit of a grab bag of topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Issues covered: wondering which creatures were in which games, wondering if the music is your canonical music, crab hands with chords, a non-ergonomic system, using the dog-ears, kibbitzing about controllers, being pulled ahead by inherent mystery, camera direction and half pipes, Tim brings up Artorias again, the moment of fiero, charging up the half-pipe, building up momentum, seeing some things with the thermal visor vs the x-ray visor, testing the player's abilities, serving the purpose of reinforcing play modes, the primordial morph ball, retuning game play for versions, the stress of bosses, relative challenge of bosses in Zelda games vs Metroid, lack of grinding, the variety of progression blockers, the stages of water, thinking you'll drain the water, changing water into not water, not keeping track of where there's water, the first person obscuring that water will be traversable, finding a good energy tank, a bit of a bug, peeling the onion as you have additional tools, seeing the grapple points, wanting better map information, map annoyances, a well set-up "puzzle," framing the camera well in the morph ball, opening up Metroid to the Breath of the Wild, desaturated colors, not missing the dual-stick feel, being able to lock on and pay attention to other things, lock-on facilitating guns as tools.  Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Metal Gear Solid (series), Brainy Gamer podcast, Switch, Castlevania, Hollow Knight, Super Metroid, Dark Souls, Dead Cells, David Wolinsky, Pippin Barr, GameThing, Nintendo, Legend of Zelda (series), Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Alex Neuse, LucasArts, Metroid Fusion, Ernst Lubitsch ("Let the audience add up two plus two.
