Back in September, 2010, I had the tremendous opportunity to interview Van Dyke Parks on two occasions. The second time was live before an audience at Pop Montreal. The first time was over the phone for the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show!, which I co-hosted with my wife Michelle. Here for you now, as it aired on September 29, 2010, is my radio interview with Van Dyke Parks. "Anniversary" Abigail Lapell is one of the most arresting voices in modern music. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter has been on an undeniable winning streak since her 2011 debut album Survivor. She followed that up with stunners like 2017's Hide Nor Hair, 2022's Stolen Time and her brand new one Anniversary. We'll get to Anniversary in a second but before we do, here are a few things to know about Abigail. Aside from snaring honors like the Canadian Folk Music Award, the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award, the Toronto-based musician has scored a Canadian folk radio #1, logged close to 50 million streams and been quietly forging a reputation as a heart-stopping live performer, knocking people out at SXSW, the Edmonton Folk Fest and POP Montreal. Her new album was recorded with Tony Dekker of the Great Lake Swimmers in a 200 year old church in Niagara on the Lake and it's a riveting listen. Filled with haunting percussion, musical precision, and folky finesse, Anniversary is one of the most achingly beautiful albums of the year. www.abigaillapell.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Pop Montreal 2022 preview.
For this episode I interview Jennifer Dorner, Executive Producer of POP Montreal. Jen started her position with this organization in Spring 2020, just as the world was going into pandemic mode. And while starting a new job in arts' event planning, virtually, during a pandemic, isn't necessarily easy, Jen's background as a contemporary visual artist has prepared her with skills to take on this challenge - In contemporary arts you're always having to prepare for the unknown, and when most institutions are used to more systemic ways of doing things, Jen could see solutions in the unusual spaces and creative opportunities .We discuss what this has meant so far for Pop, what has emerged despite the odds, what has changed, and what are we looking forward to. We discuss how Montreal, Quebec, and Canada have responded to this crisis when it comes to funding and supporting the arts. And we discuss the hurdles presented by not knowing what state of pandemic conditions you'll be presenting in months down the line - there are as Jen describes "Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D....all the way to Plan Z". There have been obvious challenges, but there have definitely been silver linings too. One example is how Remote technologies have allowed for incredible keynote speakers from around the world who they may never have otherwise had access to. In general, it has re-framed the choices we make and Jen observes that with climate change, we really do have to be more economical about when we do get together, and recognize that there are other ways of doing things. So while we all hope for a safe return to gathering and enjoying arts and music experiences together, hopefully we will lean into some of these new possibilities and continue those practices as well.Pop Montreal celebrated its 20th anniversary this past fall, and you can find more information about attending or applying to perform at popmontreal.com Thank you Jen for connecting and sharing today! This interview was originally recorded on Mar 10, 2022 This is a public episode. Karim Kanji and Gregg Tilston welcome to the podcast, Bad Skin! 4 girls not afraid to kick ass and deliver a phenomenal performance each time they set foot on stage! They love to take every opportunity to show the world what they are capable of! They played a lot of shows and festivals in Quebec: Music 4 Cancer, Pop Montreal, Pouzza Fest, 77 Festival, Rockfest pour la santé mentale, Le Phoque Off and many more! Throughout the festivals they met and spend time with their main inspiration, the members of L7 and last summer they went on an adventure, the biggest convention in the world at Cannes for MIDEM. It all started with Dope, (signer/ rhythm guitarist) from Laval. Since birth she knew she would leave her mark on the world. Everywhere she goes people always remember her phenomenal energy, no one even knows when she sleeps! In late 2016 she wanted to start a crazy all girl Punk/Rock Band and quickly found her accomplices! With some flyers and posters, she eventually met Caro (lead guitarist) and automatically knew it was a match in heaven… hell they have the same brain! Afterwards, thanks to Facebook she found the sweet, adorable and very smart Aurély (bassist) and the final missing piece, that pop red cherry on a Sunday, the beast, Christine (drums). With passion and dedication, they had one mission in mind, speak for the voiceless! They connect with their fans in the most incredible way and they help them raise awareness on daily injustices through their songs. Soon enough they were signed by Dance Plant Records who is helping and mentoring them along the way to be the best version of themselves and take off on that unbelievable journey…. which is just starting!

In this episode, we spoke with Obuxum, Toronto-based Somali-Canadian producer and beatmaker, about her experience expanding her music to the gaming industry and how that has inspired new avenues. Obuxum offers advice to emerging artists looking to build and connect in Toronto's music industry, pointing to the valuable resources available in community art and music spaces. Obuxum also shares her experience performing in major Montreal festivals like Pop Montreal and Mutek, and how they have exposed her to other Canadian and International talent. In the future, Obuxum imagines that more diversity and connections could be fostered in the Canadian landscape overall if hybrid programs and experiences were designed to bridge the gap between Montreal and Toronto.
Jon Cohen on The DJ Sessions presents the Virtual Sessions 1/14/21 About Jon Cohen - Jon Cohen is a Montreal a musician whose electrifying story songs transport listeners into the dreamlike dance floors of their minds. His soulful tunes are rooted in 90s fuzz-washed art rock, but quickly reach toward the sunshine of hip-shaking electro grooves. Lorem Ipsum is Cohen's seventh studio release. Recorded almost entirely using an iPhone, the eight tracks take listeners on an inner journey while simultaneously making you want to dance. The album is a melting pot of early 2000 fuzz electronica, from Bonobo to OK GO, Chemical Brothers to Tame Impala. For our first episode of 2019 and overall Episode 21 Marx has a conversation with Roxanne Arsenault. She is the co-general and artistic coordinator, responsible for programming at the artist run center Clark, she also leads a music project called Donzelle and she is involved in many other cultural and artistic projects in the city of Montreal such as Pop Montreal.Roxanne was very generous and forthcoming with her answers not only about her personal development and her path to arrive where she is but also about genuinely difficult topics such as the responsibility of an artist run center in the current art climate and what type of risks are they willing to take to keep things fresh and not redundant which is something that happens often! In her musical pursues she shares the type of collaboration that make possible Donzelle and the sensibility and message behind this project. You can find her music all over on YouTube, Spotify or on Donzelle’s website: https://donzelle.caIt was a huge honor to have had the chance to talk to Roxanne and we hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we have enjoyed producing it.On a side note TAP Art Space is accepting project submissions until January 15th of 2019, check out the details in TAP’s website https://www.tapmontreal.comThanks for listening!

Here at Up For Discussion, we don't hate Mondays, because Mondays are when we record new episodes. But we DO love Garfield, and we SUPER love this week's guest! I sat down with JJ Fad and Arabian Prince last year at Pop Montreal for a great conversation. We talked about them NOT being included in the NWA Straight Outta Compton movie LAST YEAR! It's a hot topic now so I wanted to bring this back. Also they are super hip hop legends who deserve respect. Their story is dope, and their show, to this day, is even doper! Go see them if they come to your town.
It's POP Montreal weekend, which means the mixed salad at La Panthère Verte on St-Viateur will be all sold out, and Aux Vivres will be bumping. It also means a ton of great singer/songwriters and a couple of R&B-heavy, "dance the night away" events. And if you haven't stepped outside your front door, you should, because it's hot and POP is begging you to come out and play. Pull up those bootstraps, poutiners! You've gone hard Wednesday and Thursday, and there is no time to slow down. Rally some weekend energy, because your Friday is stacked with Pop Montreal gems. In our third episode of the Pop Montreal podcast marathon, you'll find big names like The Dream (playing with MP sweetheart Mozart's Sister), and Local Natives (playing with shoegaze kings Wild Nothing). But it's the up-and-coming talent that will really blow your mind: Our favs Emilie & Ogden will be harp strummin' at their album launch at Le Belmont, and save some dance party energy for a late night with Technical Kidman at Kathy and Kimy. We're getting punchy, listeners. And it's not over yet!
And we're back! It's impossible fitting all the great bands at Pop Montreal into one podcast so that's why we record five effin' preview podcasts in a row every year. All of the songs included below are by artists playing on Thursday, the second day of Pop, and after this we have one more each for Friday, Saturday, Sunday. On this one you'll hear from Colin Stetson, whose show with Tim Hecker should be one of the fest's most epic events, as well as old favourites Doomsquad, old timey alt-country champs The Sin and the Swoon, the breathtakingly beautiful Blue Seeds, and much more. Our hosts also jump in with tips for seeing as many bands as possible and stories of Pop past.
Get ready for the ride of your life. Pop Montreal 2013 starts tomorrow and will speed forward, making no stops and taking no prisoners, until the end of the the weekend. As usual, we at the Midnight Poutine Podcast were insane enough to create a playlist of our picks from each day of the fest, totalling a ridiculous five podcasts in a row recorded in one marathon session. Hear us talk about everything from this year's lineup to tips for surviving the festival to our thoughts on the Polaris Music Prize (which Godspeed won, much to my surprise and delight).
This week, with a heavy heart, we say goodbye to longtime Midnight Poutiner and podcast co-host Gabby Lefort. As we send her off into the world, we reminisce with her about her life and times on this podcast and she picks some of her favourite tunes from over the years. We also talk about the surprise Arcade Fire show at Club Salsatheque (Greg was there) and the odd but fun experience that was Oysterfest. But hey, guess what? We have music too! This week's podcast will cover the next week and a half as we get ready for our annual Pop Montreal five-podcast marathon. Hear about the Detuned Transmissions label launch, Ari Swan's record launch, the arrival of Thurston Moore in Chelsea Light Moving, and so much more.
On this episode we Anne, Crystal and Jared talk about Boardwalk Empire, Moneyball, Brad Pitt, Pop Montreal, Lady Gaga, Whitney Cummings, Pan Am, Two Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men and The Death of the Doritos inventor.DOWNLOAD HERE
