Feb 8, 2023Joe Duncan joins Ed Opperman to talk about real crime, and his research into it.From Crime MuseumOn February 3, 2013 a former LAPD officer, named Christopher Dorner, attacked and killed Monica Quan and her fiancé Keith Lawrence. This incident sparked a nine day manhunt for Dorner ending in suicide.Christopher Dorner was born June 4, 1979 in New York. He spent his childhood living in Los Angeles, transferring between multiple schools in the area. After graduating from Southern Utah University in 2001 Dorner joined the Navy reserve. On February 1, 2013, 2 days before he committed multiple homicides, he was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Lieutenant.While Christopher Dorner was in the Navy reserve he joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 2005 and completed his training in 2006. A year later in 2007 Dorner filed a report a Complaint against his training officer Teresa Evans for using excessive force against a mentally ill man whom they arrested. Dorner claimed that Evans kicked the person that they arrested in the face while he was on the ground in handcuffs. His claims could not be substantiated and so were dismissed. Dorner was fired from the LAPD in 2008. He appealed his case multiple times, but each court affirmed the decision of the LAPD. Dorner claimed that racist colleagues had worked to discredit him and end his career. His final appeal was denied in late 2011.But there's more to this story than the above quote would indicate. Joe Duncan joins Ed Opperman to talk about real crime, and his research into it.From Crime MuseumOn February 3, 2013 a former LAPD officer, named Christopher Dorner, attacked and killed Monica Quan and her fiancé Keith Lawrence. This incident sparked a nine day manhunt for Dorner ending in suicide.Christopher Dorner was born June 4, 1979 in New York. He spent his childhood living in Los Angeles, transferring between multiple schools in the area. After graduating from Southern Utah University in 2001 Dorner joined the Navy reserve. On February 1, 2013, 2 days before he committed multiple homicides, he was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Lieutenant.While Christopher Dorner was in the Navy reserve he joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 2005 and completed his training in 2006. A year later in 2007 Dorner filed a report a Complaint against his training officer Teresa Evans for using excessive force against a mentally ill man whom they arrested. Dorner claimed that Evans kicked the person that they arrested in the face while he was on the ground in handcuffs. His claims could not be substantiated and so were dismissed. Dorner was fired from the LAPD in 2008. He appealed his case multiple times, but each court affirmed the decision of the LAPD. Dorner claimed that racist colleagues had worked to discredit him and end his career. His final appeal was denied in late 2011.But there's more to this story than the above quote would indicate. Christopher Jordan Dorner (June 4, 1979[2] – February 12, 2013) was a former officer of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who, beginning on February 3, 2013, committed a series of shootings in Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County and San Bernardino County in the U.S. state of California.[3] The victims were law enforcement officers and the daughter of a retired police captain. Dorner killed four people and wounded three others. On February 12 he died during a standoff with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department after a shootout at a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains.A manifesto posted by Dorner on social media declared "unconventional and asymmetric warfare" upon the LAPD, their families and their associates unless the department admitted publicly he was fired in retaliation for reporting excessive force.[4][5][6][7][8]In two separate incidents during the manhunt, police shot at three civilians unrelated to Dorner, mistaking their pickup trucks for the vehicle he was driving (a dark gray 2005 Nissan Titan).[9] One of the civilians was hit by the police gunfire, another was wounded by shattered glass, and a third was injured when police rammed his vehicle and opened fire. Ethics is a subject that often gets a bad reputation in photography circles. People that discuss ethics are often wrongly seen as sanctimonious and elitist, when in fact, ethical considerations are really at the core of what makes us human. Ethics is an often misunderstood subject; however, it is paramount for us as nature photographers to be mindful of ethics when in the field. As this great article from Santa Clara University suggests, "ethics is based on well-founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues." As it relates to wildlife photography, ethics can provide us with guiding principles to protect our subjects and to remain true to our personal values as photographers.  This week on the podcast I was joined by two amazingly talented wildlife and nature photographers, Pam Dorner and Jennifer Leigh Warner to discuss ethics in wildlife photography. Christopher Dorner declared "unconventional, asymmetric warfare" against LAPD and targeted police officers and their families, resulting in 4 murders and several other attempts. Christopher Dorner is name that will be forever remembered by the LAPD and others who he was in contact with and of course the families who were directly affected. From all accounts, Christopher Dorner was a law abiding citizen, gave back to country when he joined the United States Navy and further giving back to his community when he decided to join the ranks of the LAPD. But things went south for him when he faced racism within the LAPD causing others to turn against him and in the end ending his career in law enforcement. But what happened next was something that regardless of racism, the rampage and damage that Dorner left behind is something that should never happen and is never the answer to any problem.
