We continue our series on the recent academic journal issue "Contemporary Worship Music and Intergenerational Formation" with authors Revs. Drs. Angela and Jeremy Perigo. In this episode, we explore what it might mean to take our Pneumatology more seriously when it comes to including children in the musical worship leadership of the congregation. One outcome is that we see children as equal members in the kingdom of God. We also see that welcoming children is a way of welcoming the kingdom. The Perigos challenge us to consider how the full inclusion of children is not an _age_ issue but a _Spirit_ issue. How might we be limiting the gifts of the Spirit when we limit the participation of children?Read the full article, "Poured Out on Your Sons and Daughters: Pneumatologically Shaped Pedagogical Practices for Engaging Children in Congregational Worship" by Angela and Jeremy here: https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1444/16/2/243

Oxford Bible Church - Living in the Last Days

Mary, sister of Lazarus, gives us a wonderful example of someone who loves Jesus with all her heart. She sat Jesus feet to hear His words (Luke 10:38-42), and she anointed Jesus with costly perfumed oil shortly before His death to express her pure devotion to Him (Matthew 26:6-16, Mark 14:1-10, John 12:1-7). In John's account, Mary took a pound of ointment of spikenard and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the perfume of the ointment. Matthew and Mark tell us that Mary also poured this very costly ointment on Jesus' head. The costly ointment represents the great value that she put upon Jesus (it was worth 300 denarii - about 1 year's wages, Mark 14:5). His disciples thought it was a waste pouring all this expensive oil over His head and feet, for they did not value Him as highly as Mary did. She had seen Jesus raise her beloved brother Lazarus from the dead (John 11:44), and her heart was overflowing with gratitude, love and worship. The outpouring of the oil upon Jesus was symbolic of the outpouring of her spirit to Him. The disciples were looking at the outside, but Jesus was looking at her heart (1Samuel 16:7). He saw her PURE and devoted LOVE for Him. Mary demonstrated how much she valued Jesus by pouring out all this precious oil upon Him. If we put the Gospel accounts together, she anointed His head and feet, which is why He said: “she has poured this perfume upon My BODY to prepare Me for BURIAL” (Matthew 26:12). What a contrast between the murmuring disciples and Mary's extravagant outpouring of love and deep gratitude to Jesus! It is good for us to be passionate (generous) towards our Lord Jesus. She poured the whole of the contents of the vial (not just a drop) over Jesus (Mark 14:3). Despite all the criticism and opposition, she would not allow them to stop her pouring out her heart in this wonderful, extravagant action. She refused to be intimidated by them, but was determined to pour out her whole soul before the Lord and to give Him all of her love. In His death, Jesus was about to POUR OUT His life and His blood for their sakes, and they were criticising her about the waste of this perfume POURED OUT on Him! He explained the significance of what she had done: “She has poured this ointment on My body for my BURIAL” (Matthew 26:12). It was appropriate that He received this selfless act of worship in view of the fact He was about to give up His body for death and burial, for our sake. Someone with a deep love and devotion to the Lord (like Mary) will know and perceive spiritual things that others who have less love for Him would miss. God showed her that it was needful for her to perform this act, for when He died the women wanted to anoint His body, but they could not because the Sabbath was about to start, and they had to wait until it was over. Then when they came to the tomb, Jesus had already risen from the dead, so it was important Mary anointed Him for burial in advance. We see from Jesus' response to Mary's act that He highly esteems and values PURE LOVE that is poured out upon Him. Her heart was so full of love and gratitude to Jesus that nothing was too much of a SACRIFICE. She wanted to show Jesus her deep, heartfelt, passionate LOVE by a GIFT and a DEED, and not just by WORDS.

Romans 5: 5-11 // Tom NelsonWhat have we been rescued for? Paul's good news answer in our text today is God rescued us for friendship. Paul gives three life-giving implications of God befriending us. As God's friend, we are lavishly loved, we are sacrificially loved and we are securely loved. Paul is saying when it comes to our friendship with God there is extravagant love, lavished on us, poured out on us in unbounded generosity and in us by God through the Holy Spirit.Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/49157096 Prayer Requests: https://ccefc.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/2509/responses/new23.11.12

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit (8): What happened on the Day of Pentecost?

After the 1st disciples received the Spirit WITHIN (John 20:22), Jesus prepared them to receive the Spirit UPON 50 days later (Acts 2). He gave them the Great Commission, and promised to give them power to fulfil it by the Spirit UPON (Lk 24:47-49, Acts 1:4-5,8), which was fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), when they received the Baptism in the Spirit (Acts 11:15-16). Acts 2:3-4 is the classic blueprint for this Baptism. It gives a 2-fold description: (1) The Spirit coming UPON them as FIRE, and (2) being filled inwardly with the Spirit as they surrendered their souls to Him. Then as they yielded their bodies to Him by speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them the words, He came upon their flesh. By the power of the Spirit UPON us, when we share the Gospel, His Spirit shines forth from us, empowering our words, revealing Christ to men's hearts. We activate His power UPON us by speaking His words, which release (ignite) God's Spirit, causing Him to shine forth as light (fire). In this way, we release His power by our words. They all used oil lamps, that SHINE by the power in the OIL (a symbol of the SPIRIT). Likewise, the SPIRIT is the only source of true LIGHT. The FIRE upon them meant they were like burning oil lamps with the Spirit within and upon them, shining His light, the oil having been ignited at their mouths. To ANOINT means to apply OIL, so to be ANOINTED means having the OIL of the SPIRIT upon us (Lk 4:18). So, to SHINE we must be anointed with the oil of the Spirit, and then IGNITE that OIL by our WORDS. The power is not in our flesh, but the Spirit (2Cor 4:7). We have the power of ignition, causing Him to shine by speaking His words (Acts 2:3-4). After receiving Christ, we must embrace His mission to shine His light, and surrender our soul to Him, so His Spirit can fill us, come upon us, and empower us to fulfil our ministry. Our surrender is only completed by our obedience to yield our tongue to speak the words He supplies from within (v4). Peter declared Acts 2:4 fulfilled Joel 2:28-32, which prophesied the outpouring of the Spirit UPON all (believing) flesh (Acts 2:12-18), in conjunction with signs: “I will (1) show WONDERS in HEAVEN above, and (2) SIGNS in the EARTH beneath: blood, fire and vapour of smoke. (1) The SUN shall be turned to DARKNESS, and the MOON to BLOOD, BEFORE the Coming of the Great and Awesome Day of the Lord (the central event)” (Acts 2:19-20). Joel 2:28: “It shall come to pass AFTERWARD (after the central event, v31), that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh.” Finally, he quoted the last line of Joel's Prophecy in Acts 2:21: “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” Joel's Prophecy predicted a sequence of events: (1) SIGNS in HEAVEN and EARTH, just BEFORE (2) the Great and Awesome Day of the Lord, AFTER which (3) the Spirit will poured out UPON all flesh. The purpose of the outpouring of the Spirit UPON all believers is to empower them to prophesy (speak under the inspiration of the Spirit), which we do when we witness to Jesus, for as we speak, we trust the Spirit upon us to anoint our words, speak through us and glorify Him (Rev 19:10). The aim of our Spirit-filled witness is that people will call on His Name and be saved (Acts 2:21). Peter claimed what happened was the fulfilment of the whole of Joel's Prophecy (Acts 2:16), which he quoted in full (2:28-32), not just the bit about the outpouring of His Spirit. He declared the 3-fold sequence of events prophesied by Joel was now fulfilled: (1) The SIGNS on EARTH and in HEAVEN happened on the Day of the Cross, 2 days BEFORE (2) Christ's RESURRECTION (the Great and Awesome or Manifest Day of the Lord), the main focus of Peter's sermon. Then 50 days AFTERWARD (3) the Spirit was POURED OUT on all flesh. Thus, the promised Spirit was now made freely available to all, so if we put our faith in Christ, we too can receive the Gift of His Spirit (Acts 2:32-33, 38-39). Both SIGNS in the HEAVENS were fulfilled on the Day of the Cross: (1) the DARK SUN at noon, proclaiming Jesus as our sin offering (Luke 23:44-45), for the radiant SUN of righteousness (Mal 4:2), bore the darkness of sin on Himself, pictured by the midday sun made black, as predicted in Amos 8:9. Ancient historians recorded this strange supernatural darkness, dating it to AD 33. (2) The BLOOD MOON (Acts 2:20) = a lunar eclipse. On Passover of AD 33 (Friday, April 1st), in Jerusalem as the full moon rose above the horizon, it was a Blood Moon. So, Joel 2:30-31 was fulfilled on the Day of the Cross. Whereas the SUN = CHRIST, the SOURCE of LIGHT, the MOON = His PEOPLE, who, like the moon, shine by reflecting the SUN's light. God proclaimed in the heavens that His People were now covered by the BLOOD! Acts 2:20 also speaks of SIGNS on EARTH: (1) ‘BLOOD' = the BLOOD of CHRIST, corresponding to the BLOOD MOON. (2) ‘FIRE and VAPOUR of SMOKE', because of the great earthquake and resulting FIRES from all the oil lamps in the dark.

In Romans we are told that "the love of God has been POURED OUT in our hearts" (Romans 5:5). The Weymouth Translations puts it like this, "the love of God has FLOODED our spirits." Love is the nature of God, the first fruit of the Spirit, the greatest commandment, and the virtue we are called to "increase and abound" in more than any other! (1 Thessalonians 3:12)

SERMON | 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 | NOT ASHAMED - 4. "Poured Out" by Rev. Joseph Sanford at Sellersburg United Methodist Church in Sellersburg, Indiana We wrap up our series looking at the world through Paul's eyes -- people, God, self, church, living, suffering, and even dying. We are to "keep the faith" as Paul did, always remembering the core identity and reality from which we live as Christians -- with Jesus as God's ruler, raised from the dead, and making all things new here...now...and forevermore. If we buy into the pseudo-gospel of thinking the point is only where you go once you die, then not only are we missing the whole point, but we will get knocked off track so easily. When we keep the faith we always know who we are, whose we are, and with whom we live this beautiful, messy, complicated, and stressful life of faith -- the church.

This morning we are going to talk about obedience to God's Word. In some ways, we think being an adult means nobody tells you what to do anymore. Then, we get job, we get a boss telling us what to do, and then we think, “I want to own my own business so I can be the boss and get to do what I want to do.” But it never ends. The government tells us what to do. The city of Austin tells us what to do as a church in Austin. Law enforcement tells us what to do, and then we come to God's Word and we see God's Word telling us what to do, so sometimes our natural push back on obedience to God's Word can be resistance. But this is why we study God's Word so we can have a biblical understanding obedience, so that this morning we will see three sub-points; 1. Work Out. 2. Without. 3. Poured Out.

God's Wrath is Completed on Earth Today's passage reinforces something taught many times in the Bible: Earth as we've known it, degraded by sin, will cease to exist. But earth as it should have been, enlivened by God's presence, is coming! The Three Purposes of the Seven Year Tribulation: 1. Judge the satanic system that has filled the earth with sin 2. Re-gather a spiritual Israel that will be ready for Christ's rule on earth 3. Give everyone on earth several last chances to repent before it's too late You might want to picture the judgments of the seals, the trumpet, and the bowls as the bulldozer on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” that removes what should not be there before God makes earth Paradise again. Read Revelation 15-16 God's Wrath is Completed on Earth Let's Pray! Heaven Rejoices in Anticipation of the Bowls being Poured Out 15:1-8 This great and awesome sign goes with the two signs John had seen in chapter twelve. There he saw the great sign of God's protection and dealings with Israel. He also saw the sign of the havoc Satan would cause during the last three and a half years of the tribulation. During the days of the tribulation, many people will turn to Christ and then be killed for their faith. But far from being worse off, they'll be very much alive in Heaven with God! Interestingly, Heaven doesn't seem to struggle with God's righteous judgment the way we do down here with our sinfully divided hearts! I hope you understand that the supreme attribute of God is His holiness! Every other attribute of God, including His love, is to be understood in terms of His holiness. The only proper response to His holiness is to glorify Him! God's holiness will not allow sinners to go on defiling earth. Heaven is out of the question for those who won't repent. That only leaves Hell for them, a place that only had to be for the Devil and his demons (Matthew 25:41). The Bowl Judgments are Poured Out Chapter 16 Some believe these judgments will be spread out over the last three and a half years of the tribulation. We don't know! My guess is they happen in rapid succession, right at the very end of the tribulation, before Christ comes back. We are called in this age of grace to love the sinner but hate the sin. I'm afraid too many of us love the sinner AND love the sin. May it never be! The Euphrates is a key river in the Bible. When God told Abraham and later Moses the boundaries of the Promised Land, He had the Euphrates as the Eastern border, with Babylon being on the other side of it. Behold, the day of the Lord is coming…For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem…Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations… -Zechariah 14:1-3 For the day of the Lord upon all the nations is near; As you have done, it shall be done to you; your reprisal shall be upon your own head. -Obadiah 1:15 “The unifying factor in all these passages is that the coming in view results in a loss for those who are not ready.” -John Walvoord, Revelation, p 238 “Every sin will be pardoned by Christ or punished in Hell, but it will never be overlooked. Nobody's sin is ever overlooked. All sin is dealt with!” -Adrian Rogers, Unveiling the End Times in Our Times, p 185

VISION IS THE INTENDED DIRECTION OF OUR LIFE IN WORDS.FILLED UP. POURED OUT.22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”JOHN 6:25-28 (ESV)1. WE THINK WE CAN EARN IT.28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”JOHN 6:28 (ESV)For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,ROMANS 3:23 (ESV)10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. JAMES 2:10-11 (ESV)2. WHEN WE THINK WE CAN EARN IT, WE BEND THE RULES IN ORDER TO GET THE SAME RESULTS.I CAN NEVER DO ENOUGH WORK.28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” JOHN 6:25-28 (ESV)THE ONLY WORK YOU ARE CALLED TO IS BELIEVING.32 Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33 When they came to a place called The Skull,[e] they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing.”[f] And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.[g]35 The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. 37 They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.”39 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you're the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you're at it!”40 But the other criminal protested, “Don't you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn't done anything wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”LUKE 23:32-42 (ESV)Jesus answered the second criminal far beyond his expectation. The thief on the cross had some distant time in mind; Jesus told him today. The thief on the cross asked only to be remembered; Jesus said “you will be with Me.” The thief on the cross looked only for a kingdom; Jesus promised him Paradise.DAVID GUZIK
