[Ep 114] This week we are sharing about a wine tour we did while in Split Croatia. To quote Lyle, I think this is the best wine tour we have ever done (and we have done a lot). That pretty much sums it up. It is the only wine tour where we have both shed a few tears, as the wine maker shared his story. But it isn't all sad – in fact it is the opposite. It was a spectacular vineyard and wine tasting tour where the wine was fabulous, the views amazing and the company great fun. Make sure you listen to the end to hear about what some of the other people on the wine tour had us all singing – here's a hint - they were from Sweden – so you can probably guess. If you would like to see all the pictures of the incredible views from the Seaview tasting rooms or from the rest of our wine tour, then click the link here www.beachtravelwine.com/podcast/114/splitwine
It was 1984 when the first vintage of a wine was produced that would become a milestone in the enology of Sardinia and Italy. The first wine from the island to be aged in barrique, Carignano del Sulcis Rosso Superiore Terre Brune is one of the many illustrious sons of one of the greatest Italian winemakers of all time: Giacomo Tachis. A great red wine that is still capable of exciting and worthily representing Sardinia and Italian winemaking in the world.

[110] Today we are taking you on a wonderful private, boutique wine tour that we did out of Zagreb. We visited the Plesivica wine region and in particular one of the most famous wineries in Croatia, Jagunic winery. The views down over the rolling hills covered in vineyards, with small churches and stone houses perched on the hillsides were incredible. The mountains were lush and green and made the perfect backdrop for our day trip. We tell you about the wine regions, what wines you should try and also about a little town we visited that is the entrepreneurial capital of Croatia and is famous for its cakes but also making the fastest electric cars in the world. Stay listening to the end when we tell you about our guides, how they made the rest of our Croation trip even better, but also how you can plan the perfect Croatian adventure that caters for just you and the things you want to see and do. We wish we had known about this service before we left Australia. Chardonnay can be a divisive wine when really it shouldn't! If you don't like Chardonnay chances are you probably just don't like over oaked Chardonnay. The grape variety itself is actually neutral and if you were to taste a Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Chardonnay next to a William Fevre Petit Chablis you would be mistaken for thinking they are two completely different grape varietals. The difference? Oak One with plenty and one without any! In this episode of Got Somme, Yarra Valley local Brenden Robnik aka 'The Wine Animal' joins us in studio to deep dive his favourite Australian wine region while also looking at the complex differences altitude can make on Chardonnay separated only by a few kilometres. Why should you consider mood and experience when pairing wines? What is a lustful wine? What do you need to know about British Columbia's wine regions? You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Three of you are going to win a personally signed copy of Luke's new book, The Sipster's Pocket Guide to 50 Must-Try Ontario Wines. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights What makes the Golden Mile Bench so special? Which wineries on the Golden Mile Bench should not be missed? Why should you consider mood and experience when pairing wines? What is a lustful wine? Why does Luke describe Vancouver Island as the Italy of BC? Which labels should you look for from Vancouver Island? What makes the red wines of the Similkameen Valley unique? What do you need to know about the other BC wine regions including Fraser Valley, Gulf islands, Kootenays, Lillooet, Shuswap, and Thompson Valley? What does BC need to do in order to thrive as a wine region for the next five to ten years? How do Luke's The Sipster's Pocket Guides differ from other wine guides? Key Takeaways I love that Luke likes to pair wines to moods rather than simply food. I think our emotional state and occasion are often far better predictors of a great match than whether your asparagus was oven-roasted or steamed. I especially like his description of a lustful wine. Luke continues to share surprising insights about British Columbia's wine regions and wines. I'm intrigued with the way Golden Mile Bench wines retain their acidity and structure, and am motivated to visit that area again. A Hawke's Bay wine and food festival is set to bring dozens of the region's best hospitality businesses together on the banks of the Tukituki River. Hawke's Bay Harvest was set to make its debut in April, but after Cyclone Gabrielle devastated parts of the region, it was pushed back to November 25th. Some of the participating businesses have only just reopened their doors and they're hoping the festival is a return to showcasing what the region does best. Kate Green has the story. An earlier version was published to say the date of the festival was taking place on the 26th of November, but the festival takes place on the 25th of November.
Antonelli San Marco is among the historic and reference wineries for Montefalco wines, in particular Sagrantino. Interesting white wines are also produced here and - in particular - with Trebbiano Spoletino, the emerging white grape of Umbria, part of the wines of the Spoleto denomination. An amazing wine, with great character and personality, the result of a particular production process and one of the most famous vineyards of the winery: Vigna Tonda.
Doing a little recap on our trip to Charleston, SC. It was by far one of our favorite foodie trips we have taken. The hospitality, the southern take ....in an upscale way, and the history. We will definately be back!
We love a winery with a manifesto, especially when one of the statements is "We are for wine with lunch on Mondays. To open the good stuff for no reason is the reason." It just makes life more fun right? You've never met vintners like Joey Wolosz and Jeff Durham of Napa's Gentleman Farmer Wines. This dynamic duo blows us away with their talent and all the things they do besides making wine. Joey is a fantastic chef, is working on a cookbook, plays the accordian, writes a monthly newsletter and publishes a quarterly magazine. Jeff is an avid farmer, plays the clarinet and provides comic relief. All this in addition to making amazing wine with one of our favorite winemakers, Jérôme Chéry! This doesn't even include their epic wine tastings, which are sit down full lunch affairs, all created from scratch by Joey. What's more, when you make an appointment to taste Gentleman Farmer Wines, you'll be sipping and breaking bread with Jeff and Joey, while nibbling on Joey's homemade dishes, crafted that morning. Mary O met Joey and Jeff when they were in Palm Springs for the first ever Equality Wine Fest in June 2022. We're thrilled to introduce you to these gentleman farmers, share their story and give you the inside scoop on their soon to open The Bungalow by Gentleman Farmer, A Studio for Gustatory Well-Being in downtown Napa.

The very first miracle in scripture is the miracle Jesus does the most — turning water into wine. In this incredible message, Ps. Ash shows us that the turning of water into wine is less of a party trick and more of a profound cosmological miracle.
What are the wine books every wine lover should own?We thought about it. We argued. We drank some wine. Argued some more...And then we decided: let's go for it. No messing around: choose just the six BEST books every wine lover needs, whether enthusiastic newbie or jaded expert. It wasn't easy. But this is the DEFINITIVE listing. A lot of thought and research went into this. Even some reading. Along the way we came across some bits that stopped us in our tracks. Like Hitler's secret wine cellar, 'freak' wines, the link between a dentist's drill and the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold, fish finger sandwiches, some cheeky poetry, the 'one-night-stand' of wines...And of course the quote about the salad and the sex toy
Tiefenbrunner is one of the oldest wineries in Alto Adige, producing great wines with a magnificent expression of the territory. The Castel Turmhof winery wins the five DiWineTaste diamonds and the title of best wine for summer 2023 with the extraordinary Chardonnay Vigna Au, a grandiose reserve, a valuable representative of the enology of Alto Adige and Italy.
As suggested by patron Keith S, this week we take a detailed look at Madeira, the Portuguese island that makes a unique and delicious fortified wine! We discuss the very important history (it's why the wine is made the way it is, so even if you hate history, don't skip that part!), the geography and climate of this far-flung island, the grapes that thrive here, and the unbelievable way this fortified wine has been made for centuries. Photo: Frasqueira Madeira, Boal 1977. Source: Getty Images (canva) From the single varieties, to dryness levels, to aging levels, we give a broad overview of this complex wine. We share the facts about the wine and sprinkle in commentary about why we love it so much. There is always a bottle around here for a reason (and part of that reason: you can open it and it won't spoil for months and months…!). Ditch your idea of cheap cooking versions, this is the real Madeira and we hope this inspires you to try it! As promised here is a list of the Madeira brands: HM Borges, Henriques & Henriques, J. Faria & Filhos, Justinos, Don Pablo, Pereira d'Oliveira, Barbeito, Broadbent, Madeira Vintners, and Madeira Wine Company (owns Blandy's, Cossart Gordon, Miles Madeira, Atlantis) Photo: The HM Borges Sercial and the Caracol from FitaPreta, DOC Madeirense. From homemade cranberry wine to a dizzying array of more than 20 award winning wines, Fenestra Winery owner and founder Lanny Replogle is one of the best known and most respected vintners in California's Livermore Valley. Fenestra is known for crafting everything from Albariño to port and sharing the wines in a historic rustic property at affordable price points. Fenestra is Latin for window and we are excited that Lanny is joining us today to give us a window into his world. According to one local winemaker here in Livermore, Lanny is the historian of Livermore Valley Wine. This former chemistry teacher connects the technical to the artistic when it comes to winemaking and calls upon chemistry to name his art in a bottle: Conjugation, Infrared. Though Lanny retired back in 2018 that never really fully took. The Marys are thrilled that we could coax Lanny out of retirement to join us in person on the pod. He certainly charmed us, and we loved the variety of wines - such good sips at such great prices.
Tramin Winery represents an important reference for the production of wines from Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir grapes, among the excellence of Alto Adige and Italy. Alto Adige Gewürztraminer Terminum 2021 stands out for its elegance and finesse, an absolute masterpiece of enological precision in which the personality of the renowned South Tyrolean aromatic grape is fully expressed.
While The Drive is on Summer vacation, and so is California Wine Country, there is no new show this week, so here is an episode of another wine show from The Drive, called Off the Vine, sponsored by our friends at Sonoma County Winegrowers, which originally aired on January 25, 2023. Cheers! Steve Jaxon and Harry Duke present this episode of Off the Vine along with Sonoma County Winegrowers President Karissa Kruse, who has invited Erik Miller from Kokomo Wines, as her guest. Erik Miller has also been a guest on California Wine Country, on an episode recorded on March 13, 2019 which we repeated on the podcast just last week. Erik is the owner and winemaker of Kokomo Wines, which he started in 2004. He named it after his hometown of Komomo, Indiana. Karissa Kruse tells the story of when she met Erik and how she knew his wines before she met him. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Kokomo Wines is located in Dry Creek Valley. Erik describes how 2004 was a different world, for wine. He sold his first two vintages entirely in his home state of Indiana. He attended Purdue University and there is Kokomo memorabilia in the winery. How young is that Rosé? They are tasting a 2022 Rosé that was bottled yesterday. The color is a light salmon pink. It is made with Grenache and he does not leave the skins in for very long because he likes the light color. It is crisp and dry, "delightful," says Harry Duke. Rosés can be good after a year in the bottle, but the market likes Rosés that are of the current year. It won Best Wine in the North Coast wine competition, which put them on the map. Kokomo Winery is open 7 days a week from 11am-4pm, at 4791 Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg. It is up on the hill on Dry Creek Road. The decor reflects Kokomo as a blue collar town. He is starting a pop-up in their barrel rook, called Breaking Bread, a new and different style of wine. It is about being with friends and sharing food and wine. He brought a pet nat, which in French is short for petillante naturelle, the ancient way of making sparkling wine. This is made with old vine Dry Creek Zinfandel. He adds nothing to it, so it could be called a natural wine. For example, they do not add sulphur dioxide (SO2) when they bring in the grapes, they don't add yeast or any nutrients for fermentation. Since it uses natural yeast, it doesn't need a lot of human intervention. They bottle it before it finishes fermenting, which builds pressure inside the bottle. It retails for $28. Erik says this really shows the versatility of Zinfandel, because you can make it into a "big peppery red" or a Rosé. They also make a red Zin under the Breaking Bread label, which also follows traditional simplistic ways. It makes for a lighter style than most Zins. When Erik started Breaking Bread, he asked Goguette Bread to make baguettes shaped like wine bottles.
The revolution of Abruzzo wine-making begins with the dream of Gianni Masciarelli. This week we see if there are any wines that can stand up to Mexican food. As with all our episodes like this, we ordered a lot of traditional Mexican and TexMex dishes that included common ingredients. Then we paired up wines that are most commonly recommended, plus a few that I think may be good options that most people don't talk about. Photo credit: Canva As we always do, we went through lots of wine and food combos and some really nasty pairings to get the results. True to form, conventional wisdom mostly failed us and what worked really well sort of surprised us. Although we all have different preferences and palates, this show may give you an idea of what works with Mexican and the reasons why. I always find it particularly interesting to sit down and test these recommended pairings because often I think the people recommending them are pairing based on theory, rather than on reality. Take a listen, test it out, see for yourself. Full show notes are now exclusively available on Patreon! The wines of Costantino Charrère and Les Crêtes have always won the highest appreciation of wine lovers. A success that is unmistakably perpetuated at each vintage and which confirms the monumental Chardonnay Cuvée Bois among the main representatives of this extraordinary winery in the Aosta Valley. The 2020 vintage confirms the absolute excellence of this magnificent wine, conquering both DiWineTaste Five Diamonds and the title of best wine of the month.
The first sign-miracle of Jesus in John 2 was turning water into wine, which was a demonstration of what He will do for us if we believe in Him. This is a picture of our New Birth and our ongoing transformation by the Spirit of God. The way this miracle happened shows that we must give Jesus the right to turn our water into wine, by submitting to His Lordship.

At the close of the 1st century, 65 years after Jesus' death in Jerusalem, “The Beloved Disciple” gives his written testimony to that “which we have heard, seen with our eyes, and our hands have touched. This we proclaim concerning the Word of life.” The Good News according to John is not only a kingdom treasure, but “makes our Joy complete.” Come join us in our study of John's Gospel. Let's eat together at the table of King Jesus, who washes our feet even as he feeds our souls!

Every year The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com host a wine competition for the vineyards in Arizona. This year, more than 200 bottles were entered to be considered for Best in Show. After hours of tasting the best wines that the state has to offer, the 20 qualified judges granted a bottle of merlot from a brand new winery the Governor's Cup. Cove Mesa Vineyards is new on the scene, but its owners Emil and Cindy Molin have spent years as wine aficionados. After getting a degree from the Southwest Wine Center, Emil set out to buy a winery himself in 2020. To some, this is the perfect story of how Arizona's wine industry is evolving from hidden gem to national recognition. In this week's episode of Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we share what Arizona vineyards have to offer, where you can find them, and how the new kids on the block took the grand prize this year.
