Norah Sis and Kendra Wait were All-American volleyball players for Creighton University. Both earned Big East Player of the Year honors and started all four years for the Blue Jays. They are also both playing for the Pro Volleyball Federation in their first season of professional volleyball. Kendra is a setter for the Omaha Supernovas, and Norah is an outside hitter for the Orlando Valkyries. The two former Blue Jays led Creighton to tie for 5th in the recent NCAA Division I National Championship and a win over the defending National Champion Texas Longhorns in the Mideast Regional semifinals. Both majored in nursing at Creighton and played under head coach Kirsten Booth and associate head coach Angie Oxley. GRANT HANSEN is the new radio voice of the Omaha Supernovas, the champions in the first year of the Pro Volleyball Federation. The club is back to defend its title in 2025. Our guest today is someone who knows all about performing under pressure and achieving greatness. She has had an extraordinary athletic and coaching career. Her journey started as a standout athlete at Georgia Tech University, where she played on the right side and helped her team reach the Elite Eight in 2003. Her coaching career has been equally impressive, with stops at Appalachian State, the University of Miami, and the University of Kansas. As an assistant coach at Kansas, she played a key role in leading the program to its first-ever Final Four appearance. From there, she became the head coach at Texas A&M, where she guided the team to a Sweet 16 appearance. Most recently, she stepped into the professional volleyball world as an assistant coach for the Omaha Supernovas in the Pro Volleyball Federation. She quickly rose to the position of interim head coach and led the team to an incredible inaugural season, culminating in a national championship. That championship was particularly special, as it marked the first professional volleyball league national championship in America. She embodies everything it means to max out with an overall coaching record of 444-172. Bird emphasizes the foundational role of relationships, mental toughness, and authenticity in her coaching approach. She candidly shares the challenges she faced, particularly in navigating role acceptance within a professional league and the importance of strong administrative support. Reflecting on her decision to return for a second season, she highlights the value of relationships and the competitive chemistry within her team as driving factors. “I am who I am because of all the sports that I've done and it's always been a big part of my life.” - Renee Saunders At the University of Nebraska Renee Saunders was a two-sport Division I athlete playing both volleyball and basketball and brought home a volleyball National Championship. At Skutt High School, she is a teacher and coach and has brought home nine Nebraska high school state volleyball championships. As a sports broadcaster she provided color commentary for the Omaha Supernovas as they brought home the first Pro Volleyball Federation title. In 2017, she was inducted into the Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame and is the only person to receive both Nebraska Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year honors in the state. She owns the championship mentality. On this episode, Renee talks about the lessons she has learned through playing sports, shares insights into her coaching strategies, and talks about stepping into the unknown and facing the challenges of sports broadcasting.
