In this second part of the conversation, Mark O'Malley returns to discuss with co-host Michael Barnard grid reliability and the evolving challenges of integrating renewable energy. The conversation examines successful examples from Germany, Denmark, and Ireland, highlighting Ireland's unique position as a synchronous island. Texas also emerges as a case study, demonstrating how increased wind and solar capacity has contributed to improved grid stability. While these examples show progress, the discussion underscores the importance of balancing reliability standards with cost-effectiveness and exploring solutions such as flexible supply chains and industrial demand response to manage renewable intermittency. The episode delves into the state of research on power system transformation. While planning methodologies for renewables are well understood, gaps remain in implementation and data availability. Inverter-based resources (IBRs) are making strides, but their seamless integration into the grid remains a work in progress. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology has proven effective, but its interaction with AC systems requires further study. The need for improved models is evident, as utilities and grid operators require greater confidence before deploying new technologies. However, commercial realities often hinder investment in specialized power system analysis tools, further complicating the transition.A key topic is the Global Power System Transformation Consortium (GPST), which is working toward becoming a legal entity capable of managing resources and funding. The initiative aims to support system operators worldwide in implementing cutting-edge research and solutions, requiring significant financial backing. Estimates suggest that $2 billion will be needed for global implementation, with an additional $500 million required for research and demonstrations. Despite these financial hurdles, progress is being made, as developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) recognize the economic benefits of supporting GPST.Beyond funding, the industry faces another pressing challenge—an acute shortage of highly skilled power system professionals. While the demand for expertise is growing exponentially, talent production is increasing at a much slower pace. Bridging this gap will require targeted strategies to develop a new generation of engineers and researchers, ensuring that the power sector can keep up with the accelerating energy transition.Action items from this episode include reaching out to Mark O'Malley to explore GPST funding opportunities and developing strategies to scale up the production of skilled professionals in the power sector.
Power grids operate like an intricate ballet of energy generation and consumption that must remain perfectly balanced at all times. The grid maintains a steady frequency (60 Hz in North America and 50 Hz in many other regions) by matching power generation to demand in real-time. Traditional power plants with large rotating turbines and generators play a crucial role in this balance through their mechanical inertia—the natural tendency of these massive spinning machines to resist changes in their rotational speed. This inertia acts as a natural stabilizer for the grid. When there's a sudden change in power demand or generation, such as a large factory turning on or a generator failing, the rotational energy stored in these spinning masses automatically helps cushion the impact. The machines momentarily speed up or slow down slightly, giving grid operators precious seconds to respond and adjust other power sources. However, as we transition to renewable energy sources like solar and wind that don't have this natural mechanical inertia, maintaining grid stability becomes more challenging. This is why grid operators are increasingly focusing on technologies like synthetic inertia from wind turbines, battery storage systems, and advanced control systems to replicate the stabilizing effects traditionally provided by conventional power plants. Alex Boyd, CEO of PSC, a global specialist consulting firm working in the areas of power systems and control systems engineering, believes the importance of inertia will lessen, and probably sooner than most people think. In fact, he suggested stability based on physical inertia will soon be the least-preferred approach. Boyd recognizes that his view, which was expressed while he was a guest on The POWER Podcast, is potentially controversial, but there is a sound basis behind his prediction. Power electronics-based systems utilize inverter-based resources, such as wind, solar, and batteries. These systems can detect and respond to frequency deviations almost instantaneously using fast frequency response mechanisms. This actually allows for much faster stabilization compared to mechanical inertia. Power electronics reduce the need for traditional inertia by enabling precise control of grid parameters like frequency and voltage. While they decrease the available physical inertia, they also decrease the amount of inertia required for stability through advanced control strategies. Virtual synchronous generators and advanced inverters can emulate inertia dynamically, offering tunable responses that adapt to grid conditions. For example, adaptive inertia schemes provide high initial inertia to absorb faults but reduce it over time to prevent oscillations. Power electronic systems address stability issues across a wide range of frequencies and timescales, including harmonic stability and voltage regulation. This is achieved through multi-timescale modeling and control techniques that are not possible with purely mechanical systems. Inverter-based resources allow for distributed coordination of grid services, such as frequency regulation and voltage support, enabling more decentralized grid operation compared to centralized inertia-centric systems. Power electronic systems are essential for grids with a high penetration of renewable energy sources, which lack inherent mechanical inertia. These systems ensure stability while facilitating the transition to low-carbon energy by emulating or replacing traditional generator functions. “I do foresee a time in the not-too-distant future where we'll be thinking about how do we actually design a system so that we don't need to be impacted so much by the physical inertia, because it's preventing us from doing what we want to do,” said Boyd. “I think that time is coming. There will be a lot of challenges to overcome, and there'll be a lot of learning that needs to be done, but I do think the time is coming.”

In this short podcast episode, Bryan answers a listener-submitted question: How do inverter air conditioners work? Inverter-driven systems have variable capacity to match loads. We can provide cooling or heating BTUs to match the needs of the space without overcompensating or undercompensating and causing temperature swings. Load matching also helps us get better efficiency out of the system. High-humidity climates also benefit from load matching, as equipment doesn't dehumidify well unless it has been running the entire time. When set up and designed properly, variable frequency drives (VFDs) improve comfort, efficiency, and even dehumidification. You can "overclock" your compressor to get more BTUs out of it without oversizing, particularly when you have high heating loads due to the cold weather. Inverter-driven equipment takes AC power in, runs it through a rectifier circuit, and turns it into rough power that resembles DC power. The current is then smoothed out and goes through the inverter bridge circuit. Unlike an analog AC wave, we rely on pulse-width modulation (PWM) to simulate three-phase power and control the motor speeds according to a space's needs. We typically troubleshoot residential inverter-driven equipment by following the manufacturer flowcharts and possibly by communicating with tech support. Commercial VFDs are external to the motors and tend to be a bit more universal rather than manufacturer-specific. Efficiency is a critical pillar in EV powertrain design. Ideally, EV components manufacturers want to convert every single available kilowatt stored within the battery into energy capable of driving the vehicle, and getting as close to perfect as possible is one of the holy grails of design. That's why engineers spend endless hours finding ways to mitigate the effects of heat and friction, because even seemingly tiny saves in these areas can make a huge difference when it comes to an EV's performance. With over 2.5 million electric drive systems (and counting!) delivered, GKN Automotive knows this as well as anybody. "It's really critical that the EV powertrain is designed to consume the least amount of waste possible to increase the range availability of the vehicle and give the driver a better experience when it comes to things like range anxiety or charging," says Ben DeLand, director of electrical hardware engineering, GKN Automotive. "In EVs, a mountain of R&D money and effort has been spent, and I think over the past 10 years we've seen massive gains in efficiency."In this episode of The Amped EV Podcast, DeLand gives his thoughts on the overlap and complexity in EV and all-wheel drive systems, how GKN Automotive aims to provide versatility in its EV powertrain solutions, the significant EV powertrain advancements that have been made over the past decade, and more. The Buzz: www.thebuzzevnews.com

Operation Independence Chicken Processing and the PURGE Main topic of the Show: Seventeen years ago, when I came to the Holler Homestead, some of the first things we did to the place was get set up to thrive through power outages. Back then they were rare and often repaired within an hour or two but growing up in a place where ice storms blew through every few years and no one was really set up for them - well that had set a foundation for things I wanted to make certain were handled no matter where I chose to live. So much has changed from the early days, including how much time it takes to get things up and running when the power goes out, frequency of power outages, and how gracefully we weather these times. Yesterday, I sold off two inverters that I had. They were intended to turn my car into a generator in the event of a power outage so that I could cool things down in my fridges and freezers and not have to panic pressure can all the meats here. As I watched them find a new home, I realized that we have not done a show with tips on how to thrive (not just survive) through power outages. Especially the kind that last a long time. This show is for folks who are on grid but who want to do better when the grid goes down. Embrace the suck (Which is that you will be putting more effort into comfort during a power outage) Emotional boosts: rechargeable light bulbs, lanterns, hot coco and a way to make it, story time or other entertainment, having a known plan Have a plan - make sure everyone knows the plan and their roles, be cross trained, bonus points if it is documented (Mine isn't) Tips Reduce what you cool or heat (Why I have a wood stove) Use what you have: camping supplies, the propane grill outside, your tent for sleeping in the summer at night, etc. Inverter/generator is a game changer BUT While they are in use take everything from the fridge that you plan to use for the day and keep it in a small cooler Countertop ice maker is a game changer Consolidate fridges and freezers so they are full Use paper plates and dish bins bins and wash 1-2 times a day WHILE IT IS STILL LIGHT OUT Top off battery operated devices while driving if you will be driving (Cigarette chargers with multiple USB Ports). Bonus points if you have power bricks Fast to cook meals, or low and slow in an insulated bin (or rock pot) What can you function stack? Woodstove is a crockpot and water heater Some things to consider for long term resilience What do you have that ONLY works with electricity and which of these things need to be handled to keep everyone thriving? (HVAC, Cooking, Drying, Lighting, Internet Equipment, Entertainment, Medical Equipment, Animal Habitat like aquariums or ponds) Can you shift to an alternative? (Gas, Wood, Camping Gear, Regenerative technology, Hard copies, do without) Can you use a battery supply for the things that you NEED? (Built in battery (A rechargeable device), Power bricks, battery bank, solar device) Can you find a way to regenerate the things that take power? (Hydro, wind, solar, gases, wood, gravity, hooking up a bike, composting. Etc. A word on communications. Mostly make it fun. Make it a great week! GUYS! Exit Lighting (Illumination of Means of Egress) Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to Mighty Line Minute. Today we're getting back into NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, and one of its most important areas, that of illumination of means of egress, otherwise known as emergency lighting. Stay tuned. The NFPA Life Safety Code serves as a comprehensive guide for many safety measures within buildings, and specifically, illumination of the means of egress. This provision is critical as it assures that occupants can safely exit a building under emergency conditions. Without proper lighting, occupants may find difficulty finding their way resulting in panic, confusion, and potential harm to individuals. Emergency lighting serves as a backup in the event of power outage, security, threats, fire, or other emergencies. It provides visibility and guidance to occupants, enabling them to evacuate safely. The Life Safety Code outlines different requirements based upon the type of building or occupancy. For example, healthcare facilities have more stringent requirements due to the vulnerability of the occupants. The NFPA 101 Code mandates the installation of emergency lighting in all exit access corridors, exit stairwells, and exit passageways. Additionally, emergency lighting must be placed at every change in direction, exit door and intersection with corridors. The lighting must provide sufficient illumination for occupants to see clearly and evacuate safely with an average of one foot candle along the pathway of egress. Furthermore, emergency lighting fixtures must be mounted at least seven feet above the floor level. Exit signage must be clearly visible and recognizable by building occupants. Signage plays a crucial role in guiding occupants to the nearest exit without confusion. NFPA 101 also requires sufficient width and capacity of exit pathways to accommodate the expected occupant load. This assures that overcrowding and potential bottlenecks do not hinder the safe egress of occupants. Inverter style emergency lighting systems use advanced technology and should always be considered as an option during both the design stage and for existing buildings. They offer much more flexibility in terms of the emergency lighting, especially regarding the means of egress travel. As opposed to the bug-eye style, decentralized, emergency lights found common in many warehouses, inverter style systems are centralized solutions. Their power source involves centralized batteries with distributed power to architecturally pleasing ceiling or wall lighting. Inverters can also power non-lighting loads, such as door interlocks, fire alarm systems, etc., and are easy to install. Just be sure the equipment and the installation conforms to NFPA 70 National Electric Code, the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 111 Stored Energy and Standby Power, UL 924, and where necessary, UL 1008. I know that's a mouthful, but today, compliance with codes and standards is essential. And finally, many occupancies, such as warehouses or industrial manufacturing operations often employ the use of other photoluminescent tapes or markings that enhance the means of egress travel. Occasionally, tapes that have photoluminescent properties are added so in order to augment the existing emergency lighting systems. In the event of power failure, not only the emergency lighting provides what is required, but the additional benefit of photoluminescence helps aid in the evacuation of personnel. Be sure to be mindful of the maintenance and testing provisions of the code, and the minimum 90 minute illumination requirement for means of egress emergency lighting. Remember too that photoluminescent signs and tapes do not replace the provision for the 90 minutes of illumination. Of course, be sure to consult the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code for details on emergency lighting, means of egress, exit signage, width of travel, travel times and illumination. Lastly, be sure to take a look at Mighty Line's full catalog to see how their products can be helpful to you in establishing a safe means of egress. These may include striping, photoluminescence and other signage that will help augment the existing program that you have put into place. Thanks again. We look forward to seeing you in a future podcast. Have a safe day!
Ben Forest of Pal industries, known for their LED lighting solutions, discusses their new full inverter heat pump, and some of their landscape lighting solutions. From Atlantic City The Pool and Spa Show. The heat pump will adjust it's output as needed to maintain a constant temperature. When a system uses slower speeds for lower outputs they operate much more efficiently. These systems also operate at much lower temperatures than other heat pumps in the industry, allowing them to be much more usable from season to season. Most heat pumps will shut down at cooler temperatures around 46 degrees. The Pal Even Heat can operate as low 5 degrees. These heat pumps will also operate as a chiller in the summer time. PAL landscape lighting is the same unit that is used in the pools but it is suitable for dry locations also.

For our NeoPixel signal to analog LED converter design, we need to convert 3 open drain PWM outputs to drive N-channel sinking MOSFETS. To do that we'll need to invert the signal - but we don't have a ton of space. So let's source a triple-NOT gate that has push-pull output, and can run from 3 or 5V logic. We also want it to be small, but not TOO small! Rhydon and Dennis enjoy a great episode filled with good times and technical difficulties from the beginning to the end. All the headaches worked to highlight what became the main focus of the show, which morphed into a discussion about the rapid pace of technological advancement hampering the development of person to person communication in the trades and in everyday life. The two conversed about the importance of eye contact, a quality handshake and body language when talking with homeowners and fellow tradespeople. They also discussed some of the short falls that they are both seeing in everyday life in regards to the same thing. Season 18, Episode 23: Brew Session (Archfiend of the Dross) + Flashback (Invasion of Gobakhan) Archfiend of the Dross burst onto the scene at DreamHack Dallas, where cftsoc unleashed a devastating combo with Metamorphic Alteration that took the tournament by storm. Turning an opponent's creature into a copy of Archfiend, without access to Oil counters, means instant death on their upkeep. The one two punch of a 6/6 flier for 2BB, paired with a blue two drop, harkens back to the days of Dimir Inverter, when the unique combo-control strategy menaced the Pioneer format while racking up an impressive 47% win rate. Excitement for the Archfiend combo has abated in recent weeks. Despite the heavy scrutiny among dedicated Pioneer players, there is still no stock build of the combo that has delivered consistent results. While cftsoc splashed blue into a mostly Rakdos shell, others like laa11 and DJeffMTG have pushed for a dedicated Dimir build. Then there are weirder options like Golgari Fight Rigging, or even Jund with Harmless Offering — all decks predicated on the promising observation that Archfiend of the Dross is a powerful standalone card. This is a combo that should work, and it's a great mystery why the new Inverter has so far failed to live up to its billing. Today on Faithless Brewing, David and Cavedan put on their sleuthing caps to get to the bottom of the mysterious missing demon. We look at eight different Pioneer builds with Archfiend, some featuring Metamorphic Alteration, and others not. We also review our testing results with Invasion of Gobakhan, which snagged David a nifty 5-0 trophy with a unique aggro brew. Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! Season 18, Episode 17: Weekly Roundup The US Regional Championships are in the books, where Pioneer took the spotlight once again. 1200 players descended upon Dreamhack Dallas to do battle with the strongest decks in the format, and put the newcomer Boros Convoke (”Boros Hogaak”) to the test. In the end, it was Engimatic Fires that ran the tables in the swiss, and Rakdos Sacrifice and Azorius Spirits that posted the top winrates overall. Boros, meanwhile, languished at a mere 47% win rate, and stock Rakdos Midrange (the most popular deck by far) performed even worse. Lawson Zandi returns to analyze the state of Pioneer and share his findings testing for the event. What went wrong for Boros, and what can we expect going foward? Lawson and Cavedan also pick out under the radar sleepers from the RC, including a brand new Inverter-style combo using Archfiend of the Dross and Metamorphic Alteration. Like our content? Craig Migliaccio, aka AC Service Tech, returns to the podcast to share his knowledge about mini-split install & service. He also talks a bit about his upcoming book, “Inverter Mini-Split Operation and Service Procedures.” Mini-splits are unique because they are compartmentalized in ways that traditional central-air ducted systems are not. Mini-splits come in many varieties, including ducted and ductless types, as well as multi-zone types. Many are inverter-driven and have more electrical efficiency as a result and can vary their capacities based on load variation. Mini-splits have metering devices at their outdoor units, and these devices may be electric expansion valves (EEVs) or capillary tubes. Inverter mini-splits also don't have filter driers because their PVE oil doesn't have the same acid concerns as POE oil, and they don't have traditional liquid lines. Flare connections are also critical when installing ductless systems, especially because you want systems to be tight to prevent leaking and contamination. Craig likes eccentric flaring tools with offset cones, and he recommends using flare nuts from the equipment manufacturer, not the line set manufacturer. He covers other flaring best practices as well. The charge is quite small in mini-splits, so weighing the charge and being careful and deliberate during charging is critical. Refrigerant leaks can also be highly problematic; corrosion and poor flare connections are common causes of leaks. Craig and Bryan also discuss: Hyper-heat systems Coefficient of performance (COP) and BTU output Moving between PSC and ECM or inverter technologies Mini-splits vs. VRF/VRV technologies Pressure testing and leak detection Compressor diagnosis Thermistors and electrical resistance Heat sinks and mounting circuit boards Selecting a location to install a mini-split Things to consider when checking the charge Why measure superheat and subcooling? Cleaning and maintenance best practices Check out Craig's YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@acservicetech. Starting January 1st, 2023, you can buy Craig's book on his website, which has a bunch of other good resources. Visit that site at https://www.acservicetech.com/.
