TED FLANAGAN chats to Paul Burke about EVERY HIDDEN THING, being a paramedic, local journalism, the Ribbon Creek Incident and the correct pronunciation of Woosta. EVERY HIDDEN THING: The last scion of a once-powerful political family, Worcester mayor John O'Toole has his sights set on vastly higher aspirations. When night shift paramedic Thomas Archer uncovers a secret that could upend the mayor's career, O'Toole is set on silencing him, and sends Eamon Conroy, a brutal former cop, to ensure the truth remains under wraps. But O'Toole doesn't stop there. With bribes, buried secrets, and personal attacks, he wreaks havoc on Archer's life in an attempt to save himself. Archer's troubles continue to mount when domestic terrorist and militia member Gerald Knak, who blames Archer for his wife's recent death, sets in motion a deadly plan for revenge. With two forces of evil aligned against him, Archer doesn't stand a chance. But things aren't always what they seem - and he may just have a few tricks up his sleeve in a last gambit to get out alive.Ted Flanagan is a Paramedic and former daily newspaper reporter from central Massachusetts whose writing has appeared on Shotgun Honey and Cognoscenti, among other places. Travis Nardi is attending college under the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program and has served as an enlisted crew chief on the CH-46 Sea Knight and as a Reconnaissance Marine with 1st Recon Battalion. After explaining how the MECEP program has worked for him, Travis details his time as a crew chief and door gunner. His unit was recalled from liberty ashore following Japan's most powerful earthquake ever recorded triggered a massive tsunami that destroyed entire coastal areas and triggered the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Travis gives a first-person perspective of the American efforts during this humanitarian disaster and describes the preventative measures the military undertook to protect troops from radioactive exposure. Following the humanitarian mission, Travis applied for and was accepted to HMX-1 as part of the aircrew and he recalls the chaos surrounding moving the president during the 2012 campaign.Next, we go over Basic Reconnaissance Course by phase with Travis recalling his time as an instructor less than two years ago. We also discuss the follow-on training like Tactical Air Control Party school, dive school, and others. We close the episode with Travis talking about his 2016 deployment with 1st Recon and how they undertook more than 30 visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) missions during anti-piracy operations off the coast of Africa. In 2004, journalist Evan Wright released a book called Generation Kill, all about his time attached to a Marine regiment during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It was a hit, and the basis for a 2008 HBO series by the same name. As its name suggests, the US Marines 1st Recon Battalion is meant to... well... perform reconnaissance. But 'Chaos' and 'Godfather' saw them more suited for a blitzkrieg to Baghdad. The result is an extraordinary story of courage, insanity, and ruthlessness, and we're eager to talk about all seven episodes and all eight hours. Of course, while we go over our favorite characters, moments, and more, this conversation also delves into the Iraq War itself, what it was like living in a society that overwhelmingly supported the conflict, and the lessons we've hopefully learned for the future. So hit play and listen... but police that mustache first. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Yes, you read the title correctly. On top of being a Recon Marine, he was an officer with multiple specialties. Gordon has done multiple deployments and in this episode, we focus on his Iraq tour with 2nd Recon Battalion that included the second Battle of Fallujah and the work he did afterward. We discuss everything ranging from him providing ground-based laser for laser-guided bomb attacks in the city of Fallujah to his team conducting nighttime boat operations to hunt insurgents along the Euphrates. Extremely interesting and informative conversation. I can't wait until we sit down again to finish talking about his unusual career. Hill 488 by Ray Hildreth and Charles W. Sasser Intro and chap 36This excerpt serves as an introduction to this fine book. Purchase the book at audible. For some, Hill 488 was just another landmark in the jungles of Vietnam. For the eighteen men of Charlie Company, it was a last stand. This is the stirring combat memoir written by Ray Hildreth, one of the unit's survivors. On June 13, 1966, men of the 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Marine Division were stationed on Hill 488. Before the week was over, they would fight the battle that would make them the most highly decorated small unit in the entire history of the U.S. military, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor, four Navy Crosses, thirteen Silver Stars, and eighteen Purple Hearts—some of them posthumously. During the early evening of June 15, a battalion of hardened North Vietnamese regulars and Viet Cong—outnumbering the Americans 25-to-1—threw everything they had at the sixteen Marines and two Navy corpsmen for the rest of that terror-filled night. Every man who held the hill was either killed or wounded defending the ground with unbelievable courage and unflagging determination—even as reinforcements were on the way. All they had to do was make it until dawn....

"Ranger" Rick Radzick, USMC Recon (91-95). Rick was my first Team Leader in the military, we linked up at 2d Recon Battalion in 1994. First Ranger Qualified individual I ever met, made a lasting impression on me. Rick lives up in Massachusetts, born and raised, he was defined by his service in the Marine Corps, his family and his faith. This episode is an introduction and a "Warning Order" that Rick will be contributing to the Veteran community in the future. Rick talks about his Grandfather, Merchant Marine, and the honor that Rick carries with him to this day. Both of our Grandfather's were Merchant Marines, very small world. As an 0311 (Infantryman) initially, Rick went to 2d Recon Battalion, from there he went to Amphibious Reconnaissance School, Airborne School, Dive School, Ranger School, SERE School and numerous deployments. We got a chance to talk about time at the Beach and all the fun there. Rick recalls old friends that defined his time in service and some in life. He says the name of an amazing Marine, Master Sergeant John Hayes (KIA Afghanistan 08 July 2009) and recalls some great times. When you get a chance to say their name, we say it over and over. A very moving tribute to John. More to come on MSGT John Hayes! On top of being a Marine and working, Rick is a deacon in his church and is a dedicated husband and an engaged father. He'll give us some more during his Saga episode and on later episodes. During Rick's free time he enjoys going out with his Jeep and his club, Jeepin' around the woods. His YouTube channel, "Recon Jeeper", is where he shares the trips he takes out in his Jeep and some other great information on upgrades and troubleshooting. Check out his channel if you get a chance. Rick is a great friend, one who earned my respect early and it was never lost; as a Veteran he has settled into a good life, one that is guided by principles learned walking through life with his head held high. We'll hear more from him very soon. Everyone enjoy, stay safe out there and be blessed! HOV©2019
On December 16th President Trump went on Twitter to announce his plans in reviewing the case of Major Matt Golsteyn, a Green Beret who was charged with the murder of an enemy combatant. Gosteyn may have acted in a manner that goes against the Geneva Conventions and the Manual for Military Courts Martial article 118. This stemming from an interview during a CIA interrogation, routine for the job selection process, in 2011, and then during an appearance five years later on Fox News. Former Army Brigadier General A.J. Tata, now a regular on the podcast, wrote an excellent piece for Fox News explaining this. The op-ed also pans critics of the President’s that have snubbed his right in reviewing this important case. Tata also has a brand new book out titled “Dark Winter,” the fifth in his Jake Mahegan thriller series. We get into the inspiration behind this book dealing with tech giants censoring opposition voices. Also on this show is a former Marine with 3rd Recon Battalion, 1st MSOB, Chris Duplantis. What makes Chris’s background unique is his history in three different branches of the military. If you’re a member of the armed forces interested in going into a different branch, you may find this information useful. In addition, Jack and I dig into the conspiracy realm, and some theories often discussed by the alt-right. A whole lot covered on Episode 414 that you don’t want to miss! Enjoy the show? For today’s guest, we are very excited to bring you the real Rudy Reyes. From MMA, to many tours in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Marine’s 1st Recon Battalion, to your TV, and finally to conservation sites all over the world this man has done it all. I really enjoyed this my conversation with this man. It changed the way I thought about myself and others. We go over a lot of good stuff, from the journey from selfless to self-love, to finding your new purpose, and how to fight off the tendency to isolate when it comes up. We go over what was difficult for Rudy to handle when getting out, his nonprofit work with Force Blue, and the greatest lesson he learned since leaving the Recon community. Listen to what Rudy has to tell you, I know it is going to change your perspective. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.
