Dark winter mornings can feel heavy—quiet, cold, and slow-moving. The darkness seems to linger longer than we want, and without warmth or sunlight, it’s easy to feel unsettled or discouraged. But Scripture reminds us that darkness is temporary. As believers, we are children of the light, and we belong to Jesus—the Light of the World. Even when the day begins in shadows, we can walk forward with confidence because God’s light is always present. Jesus promised in John 8:12 that those who follow Him will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. Darkness may surround us, but it cannot overcome what God has placed within us. The light of Christ shines stronger than any winter gloom, any emotional heaviness, and any fear that tries to creep in. Just as a candle changes the atmosphere of a dark room, God’s presence changes the atmosphere of our hearts. And one day, darkness will be gone forever, replaced completely by the eternal light of the Lord. Until then, we can face every winter morning with hope—because the light is already here. I put a lot of time into preparing our hearts for Christmas, but often I just let Easter sneak up on me. Many people in positions of power have been threatening the general public with a “dark winter”, but most people do not understand why that phrase was specifically chosen. It comes out of a 2001 smallpox and anthrax simulation of the same name, and it is a reference to a time when the public was unable to obtain vaccines during emergencies. Robert Kadlec was the architect of both Dark Winter and Crimson Contagion in 2019 which simulated a bioterrorism attack coming from tourists arriving from China in Chicago. Back in 2018, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security ran a tabletop roleplaying exercise called Clade-X that simulated the outbreak of a virus worldwide. The same people running this performance were also responsible for such favorites as Dark Winter in 2001, and Event 201 in October of 2019, just six months before COVID came on the scene. Whether it is anthrax attacks or novel coronaviruses, the people at Johns Hopkins always seem to have the best luck when it comes to predicting the future. They simulated Judith Miller from the New York Times getting anthrax mailed to her in their simulation called Dark Winter, and then a few months later it actually happened in real life, except the anthrax was fake.
