Sarah Spradlin knew she wanted to serve her nation in uniform, and to her the only option was the U.S. Marine Corps. She was commissioned as an officer after completing ROTC training at Virginia Tech in May 2001. Within months, the U.S. was at war following the 9/11 attacks. But Spradlin was not deployed to a war zone. After an assignment in Okinawa, she returned to the U.S. to oversee the training of female Marine recruits at Parris Island and focusing on ways to improve manpower. After that, she found herself at Marine Forces Special Operation Command, or MARSOC. It was in that position that Spradlin began researching emotional intelligence in special operators, and especially female special operators. In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Spradlin takes us with her to Okinawa, Parris Island, and MARSOC. And she explains how she got this new science off the ground, what she's learned about female special operators, how they interact with their male counterparts, and how her research has helped the effectiveness of our special operators.

Having an MFA in creative writing can provide the confidence and skills needed to write a book. Force recon Marines work for the force commander and operate deeper behind enemy lines compared to recon Marines. A culture of accountability and constructive criticism is important in high-performing organizations. Imposter syndrome can be a driving force for excellence and continuous improvement. Custom building a unit allows for the development of new SOPs and procedures that can improve mission success. Training and preparation for deployment can vary depending on the mission and location. CQB (Close Quarters Battle) becomes a main mission focus for force recon Marines deployed to Iraq. The first Marine Special Operations Company (DETF-1) faced challenges and successes during their deployment to Iraq in 2003. Intelligence support played a crucial role in their operations, and the unit had a strong focus on the basics of shooting, moving, communicating, and surviving. The creation of the Marine Raiders was a significant development in Marine Special Operations. John A. Dailey plans to continue writing and has future projects in mind, including books on military life lessons and mental toughness. He is also involved in coaching and training Marine Raiders.

John Dailey remembers the day he decided to become a U.S. Marine. He was a young boy at a U.S. bicentennial parade in 1976. When he saw the Marine in dress uniform, he was hooked. Eleven years later, fresh out of high school, Dailey enlisted in the Marines. Soon he was guarding the U.S. embassy in Hungary while the Iron Curtain was teetering and later held the same role in Argentina. He also passed sniper and reconnaissance training. But in his first 14 years of service, he never saw combat. That is until 9/11 happened while he was half a world away.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Dailey tells us how he learned of the devastating attacks on our nation, how he was among the first Marines in Afghanistan, and the judgment and decisiveness he exercised in his first combat duties there. Then Dailey explains how he helped to stand up a U.S. Marine Corps recon unit and get it ready for service in Iraq. He also takes us along for the ride as he recounts what it took to find and capture high value targets in Iraq and how he put his sniper skills to use against allies of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.Finally, Dailey details why the special operations unit was disbanded after he returned to the U.S. and how he soon worked to help establish the the Marines' own special operations command (MARSOC) and the current generation of Marine Raiders. He is also the author of "Tough Rugged Bastards: A Memoir of a Life in Marine Special Operations."

MARSOC. Intelligence Hacking. Dagger Ops. For Staff Sergeant Michael Bloch, doing rad stuff is all in a days work. And after 12 years of service to our country as a Marine Corps. Raider, Bloch's been busy - he's served as a combat instructor, deployed as a contractor, and even founded his own company, EBS Defense Consulting, along with Project Vetworx, a veteran nonprofit. It's a lot for any one person to handle, much less a vet suffering post-traumatic stress. Fortunately, the V.A. has options for treatment like Nuvigil, a medication that's reported to promote wakefulness. But like any medication, too much of a good thing can quickly turn out bad. MARSOC - an elite component command of the United States Special Operations Command that comprises the Marine Corps' contribution to SOCOM. Just take it from Christian - he was one of the first Marines admitted into the Corps' elite program. Since his days in deployment, he's pivoted; a turn as a Texas State Trooper on Border Patrol and a police officer in Austin certainly don't hurt his already outstanding resume. But titles are more than just accolades - they're a sterling reminder of the gun fights, close calls, and high-speed chases that can only happen on American highways. ----------Chapters:00:00 - Intro02:06 - IED Developments09:01 - Finding MARSOC19:32 - The Horn of Africa33:33 - The Service Limitations Rule39:09 - ...Underage Drinking?43:54- Instructing at SERE School59:16 - The Three Most Important Survival Tips01:06:53 - A Texas State Trooper on Border Patrol01:19:18 - Human Trafficking01:26:55 - Highway Work01:34:41 - Back at Academy01:44:38 - A High-Speed Getaway in Austin01:52:19 - Souped-Up Patrol Cars01:57:00 - Police Office Politics02:00:02 - Finance, Finance, Finance----------Support Christian Holloway - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chris.holloway_fiYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs1jwxG_W_NAVVX8KlZ-MigLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-holloway1----------Sponsors: 1st Phorm https://www.1stphorm.com/mikedrop | Free shipping on all orders over $75 when you use the link!----------BioProteinUse code MIKEDROP to save $30 on your first order at https://www.bioproteintech.com----------Black BuffaloGo to blackbuffalo.com/discount/MIKEDROP and use promo code Mike Drop at checkout for 15% off your first order!Black Buffalo products are intended for adults aged 21 and older who are consumers of nicotine or tobacco.----------Fueled by TeamDog | www.mikeritlandco.com | @Teamdog.petALL THINGS MIKE RITLAND:SHOP for Fueled By Team Dog Performance Dog Food, Treats, Apparel, Accessories, and Protection dogs - MikeRitlandCo.com - https://www.MikeRitlandCo.com Team Dog Online dog training - TeamDog.pet - https://www.TeamDog.petThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5531509/advertisement

Christian Holloway was just a mild mannered, all-American, belt-fed marine, right up until he found himself being deployed as infantry to the second battle of Fallujah. It was far from the only time he'd find himself in a tough spot - Christian's got more than one story of close calls, stray squirters, and unexploded rocket-propelled grenades courtesy of Saddam's best and brightest.Eventually his experiences led him to becoming one of the earliest members of MARSOC, the Marine Special Operations Command that's now known as the Marine Raiders, where he found even more action from an entirely different side of the globe. That's why he's sitting down today to tell us all about it. ----------Chapters:00:00 - Intro02:05 - Why Are We Here?10:08 - David Goggins Can't Hurt Me17:03 - I Wanted to Fly Planes23:33 - In Country, Out of Options37:27 - The Craziest Gunfight I Got Into47:52 - Everybody's Got a Plan Until First Contact01:02:45 - They Weren't Pulling Pins01:14:08 - Searching Bodies for Intel01:22:47 - Post-Deployment Leave01:28:32 - Second Deployment01:47:49 - IED Developments----------Support Christian Holloway - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chris.holloway_fiYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs1jwxG_W_NAVVX8KlZ-MigLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-holloway1----------Sponsors: MUD/WTRGo to https://www.mudwtr.com/mike to support the show and use code MIKEMUD for 15% off----------1st Phorm https://www.1stphorm.com/mikedrop | Free shipping on all orders over $75 when you use the link!----------BioProteinUse code MIKEDROP to save $30 on your first order at https://www.bioproteintech.com----------Fueled by TeamDog | www.mikeritlandco.com | @Teamdog.petALL THINGS MIKE RITLAND:SHOP for Fueled By Team Dog Performance Dog Food, Treats, Apparel, Accessories, and Protection dogs - MikeRitlandCo.com - https://www.MikeRitlandCo.com Team Dog Online dog training - TeamDog.pet - https://www.TeamDog.petThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5531509/advertisement
