Nic grew up in Montana but left to join US military special operations as a US Air Force Pararescueman. Air Force Pararescuemen, also known as PJ's, are the only elite combat force in the Department of Defense that are trained and equipped to perform personnel recovery. PJs are highly trained special operators who rescue, recover, and return American or allied forces in times of danger or extreme duress. It's a dangerous position from any angle - air, land, or sea, PJ's are there when others are not. Just take it from Brandon Daugherty. With seven back-to-back deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, and a few classified missions in parts unknown, Brandon knows a thing or two about flying into the dark. And after 10 years in Pararescue, he's since pivoted to rescuing astronauts with his company at Operator Solutions that we covered in his previous episode. But what makes PJ's so special? It's a complicated notion for a such a simple statement - where do Astronauts need to be rescued from, exactly? How many Astronauts are you rescuing in a given month, or even a year? And how does a guy like Brandon go from diving out of helicopters to snatching cosmic explorers right out of the ocean? Turns out, it all starts in the Air Force with a decade of Pararescue, along with seven back-to-back deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa to boot. Nowadays, Brandon's own Operator Solutions is doing incredible work alongside the likes of NASA and SpaceX, as well as his philanthropic work over at the Alpha 5 Project for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, but you don't get to save spacemen without doing a little homework first. TCS is a company that works with over 600 collegiate programs across the country providing education and services that help college coaches with their recruiting. For 30 years Divilbiss has served as a collegiate women's basketball coach at both the NAIA and NCAA D1 levels. In 21 years as a head coach Mike's teams won 392 games and played in 6 NAIA National Tournaments and 2 Big West Conference Championship games. His teams did well at nationals with 3 teams going to the Elite 8 and in 2001 the Warriors of Lewis Clark State made the Final 4 in Jackson, TN. In 4 other seasons as a head coach, 2 at LC and 2 at Idaho, MIke's teams played in conference championship games and ended the season one win away from qualifying for National Championships. Mike's final 3 seasons coaching were spent at the University of Illinois as Associate Head Coach. In his first season the Illini had the first winning season in conference play in over 20 years going 9-7 and broke 2 25 year old conference records due to the BUZZ Defense which is one of the things Mike is known for. Those records would be steals and turnover margin. In all, that team played in the NIT and finished in the Elite 8 losing a tough game at Kansas State. Mike's teams in all went 594-327. He coached 28 All Americans, qualified for 12 National Tournaments, and won Conference, District, or Area Coach of the year as a Head Coach 7 times. Holiday separations are an unfortunate but necessary part of military service. As civilians we should recognize that the reason we are able to spend our holiday peacefully and safely with friends and family is because members of our military and first responder communities have volunteered to be apart from theirs. This burden is particularly heavy upon those forces who, by the nature of their work, have a higher than normal deployment tempo. The Air Force Pararescue community falls into this category. Col. Jose Cabrera, Commander of the 563rd Rescue Group, joins us to discuss holiday separations and some suggestions to make it easier on military families. Col. Cabrera has served our nation for over two decades, most of it with the Pararescue forces. The units under his command include an HJ-130J rescue squadron, two HH-60G rescue squadrons, three Guardian Angel rescue squadrons and an Operations Support squadron. Col. Cabrera shares some details about the nature of the Pararescue mission and the training required to join these elite forces and fulfill their motto "These things we do that others may live.” Separated families can experience stress, depression, guilt and even anger. Witnessing the realities of war can also cause mental health issues that impact families as well. For this reason, Pararescue forces embed chaplains with all deployed units. Col. Cabrera emphasized that reintegration also presents challenges when military members have been apart from their family for so long and miss important milestones. We discuss several suggestions for military families. These include pre-recording some of the children's favorite bedtime stories, establishing new “traditions” that incorporate the separation and getting out of the house for new experiences and socializing as a family. In the tight knit Pararescue community, new spouses are prepared for the challenges of deployment by unit spouses with a bit more experience under their belts. TAKEAWAY: “The first deployment is probably the toughest deployment for a family. You do get used to it over time but it is NEVER easy.”

Pararescue is the most highly decorated Air Force-enlisted force, executing the most perilous, demanding, and extreme rescue missions at anytime, anywhere around the globe. Their motto is: "These Things We Do, That Others May Live." Pararescue Staff Sergeant James D. Pou was so legendary, he became the "gold standard" for how the Air Force drills its trainees. He died a hero. So why did the June 2, 1993 L.A. Times headline read: "Bigamist, Deserter Escapes From Air Force Brig"....? Grab a parachute and jump into the interstate scandal of one legendary Airman/escape artist, two wives, two affairs, five kids, one bank robbery, and a military prison break. Chief John Tobey represented the Air Force from 1963 to 1989. Four years after enlisting, Chief Tobey earned a Silver Star on his way to achieving two Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Airmen's Medals in Vietnam, Korea, and Alaska. Chief Tobey is well regarded as one of the best advocates for the Pararescue community. Among other things, his leadership allowed for expansion of the pipeline into what we know and love today and the OL-J / Indoctrination Course remaining high attrition rate programs.
Leif Arvidson, a former Pararescueman, served his country from 1967 to 1993. In this episode, Arvidson recounts his experience that led to his Silver Star award during his first tour in Vietnam. Beyond the battlefield, Lief shares his contributions to the Pararescue community, including his role in establishing the Special Tactics Squadrons (STS) and the Paramedic Certification for PJs. Enjoy!

Bernie Oder joined the U.S. Air Force in 1972 when his number came up among the final names in the military draft. We have had Pararescue Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) Ivan Ruiz on a couple times before- he's a close friend to all of us here at Ones Ready, and has always been an example of "how to do it the right way." Now, as Ivan is making his way into the next phase of his life, he sits down and reflects mid-stream about what all that means. You heard his awesome advice in part one- but we had to split this one up into a special two-part series so Ivan could dig into some real talk for the next generation. Both of August O'Niell's parents served in the U.S. Air Force, and he followed suit thinking of a few years of service would pay for his college education. Instead, O'Niell overcame huge odds to become a member of a pararesue team, known as the PJ's. In Afghanistan, he and his team came under daily fire rescuing service members are others who were wounded or in precarious situations. However, that service also led to the greatest challenge of his life.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," O'Niell walks us through the events of July 15, 2011, when an enemy AK-47 round ricocheted into his helicopter and wounded him in both legs. He also describes his decision to have part of his left leg amputated after 20 surgeries failed to repair it, but still winning five gold medals at the Warrior Games leading up to that surgery. O'Niell also shares his determination to return to excellence at the Invictus Games and to return to full active duty on the pararescue team.

Capt. Tom Smith attended the Air Force academy before becoming a Combat Rescue Officer (aka CRO). As a CRO, Smith led a team of pararescuemen that flew into combat zones in order to save fellow military personnel and civilians. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
BECOMING THE PROTAGONIST. Dr. Joshua Appel recalls his journey to becoming an elite PJ in the Air Force, his path to becoming an ER doctor, his connection to the Murph Challenge, and the incredible rescue of Lone Survivor Marcus Lutrell. About Josh: Appel served active duty from 1994-99 as a pararescue specialist in emergency medical tactics, as well as combat and survival skills, continuing on with the United States Air Force Combat Search and Rescue Squadron as a reservist throughout medical school. The rescue team that recovered lone survivor, Marcus Luttrell, was led by Appel.Josh and the MURPH (from the Fit at Midlife site) : Hero WOD's are usually programmed and set up in gyms, and it is a great opportunity to commemorate these heroes to instill and retell the stories of heroism and sacrifice. Murph was first registered on CrossFit's Main Site on August 18th, 2005. No one can tell when exactly it became a tradition for gyms to program Murph on Memorial Day. But in 2007, Josh Appel, an Air Force pararescue jumper who headed the team that jumped to save LT. Murphy's team, took the concept to his gym, Albany CrossFit, and the rest of the CrossFit community did the same. Ten years later, it's an honorable tradition for gyms to close on Memorial Day, working only Murph as their workout, often accompanied by a barbecue or other community bonding event. #lonesurvivor #murphchallenge #becomingtheprotagonistSupport the show
Today we have a phenomenal Combat Story with our first dedicated insight from a legendary CIA Case Officer, Paramilitary Operations Officer, and Senior Leader Enrique ‘Ric' Prado, who fought terrorists from the jungles of Central America with the storied Special Activities Division to eventally overseeing all Agency operations at the helm of the counterterrorism center.[Support us on Patreon and get exclusive content and insights at www.patreon.com/combatstory, including additional photos of Ric and a story of the hardest training course he ever went through] Before joining the Agency, Ric successfully completed the famed Pararescue or PJ pipeline but did not, despite multiple volunteer attempts, have the opportunity to fight in Vietnam. Instead, Ric would see plenty of operations and battles but with the CIA, where he was operating as a solo Paramilitary Ops Officers or PMOO in the Nicaraguan jungles in his first tour. Early in his career Ric first came into contact with and was then mentored by some of the Agency's giants like Cofer Black, Duey Clarridge, Bill Buckley, William Casey, and more. As you'll see during this interview, these are all names I know and revere so I was star struck hearing Ric's stories about these giants and just spending time with Ric, who many of these heavyweights consider one of the best CIA operators of his time.On 9/11, Ric was the Chief of Operations (or C/OPS as the role is know inside the building) of the counterterrorism center, responsible for all counterterrorism operations for the whole CIA.After leaving the service, Ric founded a successful company where he continued to take the fight to the enemy and recently wrote a great book that gives a true behind the scenes look at the wide ranging, unpredictable and often dangerous life of a CIA operations officer. This is one of my favorite interviews to date and I hope you enjoy this peek behind the curtain of the premier covert intelligence organization from one of its legends as much as I did.Find Ric Online: - Ric's website https://ricprado.com/ - Black Ops Book https://static.macmillan.com/static/smp/black-ops/- Ric on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/enrique-ric-prado-052a11186/ Find Ryan Online: - Ryan's Linktree https://linktr.ee/combatstory- Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/combatstory/- Instagram @combatstory https://www.instagram.com/combatstory- Facebook @combatstoryofficial https://fb.me/combatstoryofficial- Send us messages at https://m.me/combatstoryofficial- Email ryan@combatstory.com- Learn more about Ryan www.combatstory.com/aboutus- Intro Song: Sport Rock from Audio JungleShow Notes:0:00 - Intro 0:47 - Guest Introduction (Ric Prado) 2:41 - Interview begins 3:42 - Growing up in Cuba during the revolution in the 1950s and coming to America without his parents 11:46 - Gratitude as an American and choosing life of service 14:54 - The Pararescue Pipeline and becoming a PJ 20:49 - Joining Ground Branch/Special Activities Division in the CIA and role as a Paramilitary Officer 25:11 - The type of work he was doing with the Agency early on and the rewarding feeling of being able to do something about injustice 29:10 - Story of first contact fighting on the front lines during the 1980s Cold War 34:32 - Feelings of being down range after not getting the chance in Vietnam 37:05 - How early experiences informed his role later as Chief of Operations Counterterrorism Center and a story of how street savvy saved him 46:46 - Being a solo operator 47:40 - Working with CIA legends Dewey Clarridge and Bill Casey 51:02 - About the LA (Latin American) Division 54:22 - Legend Joe Fernandez requesting him by name and working more traditional undercover ops57:17 - Making his first recruitments in Costa Rica1:02:47 - Role in Alec Station tracking Osama bin Laden 1:10:21 - 9/11 and being Chief of Operations at the Counterterrorism Center 1:16:23 - Story of a particularly dangerous mission 1:25:10 - Story of learning he was under surveillance 1:30:46 - What did you carry with you on missions?1:32:29 - Would you do it again? 1:34:55 - Hear more on Patreon 1:35:35 - Listener comments and shout outs
