How is the agriculture industry managing plastic waste?

The agriculture industry is not dissimilar from other industries in Canada.  We produce many different products but through the production of food, there is often some form of inorganic waste that is generated. To protect the environment and manage different aspects of primary production, we currently use plastics, and lots of them. Barry Friesen is the Executive Director of Cleanfarms who provides solutions to some of these challenges and how this is improving the environmental sustainability of agriculture in Canada. Guest Barry FriesenBarry Friesen is Executive Director of Cleanfarms Inc., a national producer responsibility organization operating coast to coast in Canada. In Quebec, Cleanfarms is known as AgriRÉCUP.   Barry is a Professional Engineer who has been deeply involved in solid waste issues since 1995, first as a government regulator for waste, a municipal waste operator servicing a half million residents and, since inception in 2010, running Cleanfarms Canada. His range of expertise is in demand at international meetings such as the OECD Conference on Rural Development, the Conference on Canadian Stewardship, Agricultural Film Americas and other circular economy and policy conferences.   Barry currently serves as Chair of the Conference on Canadian Stewardship and as a member of the AGRI plastics working group of the European Association of Plastics Recycling and Recovery Organizations. A recipient of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee Medal, Barry is the past chair of the Board of the Compost Council of Canada, past Board member of the Recycling Council of Ontario, past Board member of the Alberta Plastic Recycling Association, past Chair of the National Task Force on Packaging and past Board member and recent recipient of a Paul Harris award from the Etobicoke Rotary Club. Host Clinton MonchukClinton Monchuk grew up on a mixed dairy, beef and grain family farm outside of Lanigan, Saskatchewan. He received his Bachelors of Science in Agriculture majoring in Agricultural Economics from the University of Saskatchewan and Masters of Business Administration in Agriculture from the University of Guelph. Clinton has enjoyed numerous roles across Canada, the United States and Mexico as a researcher, educator, manager, economist and director of trade policy. In 2016 Clinton accepted the role of Executive Director with Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan to promote farming and ranching to consumers. Clinton understands the value of increasing public trust in agriculture and actively promotes engagement between the agriculture industry and consumers. Clinton, Laura and their children Jackson and Katelyn, continue to be active partners on their family grain and layer farm in Saskatchewan and cattle ranch in Oklahoma. Resources:Recycling on the FarmWhat is UpcyclingCarbon FarmingCanadian Farmers Help Feed the WorldEpisode Credits: Research and writing by Dorothy Long and Penny Eaton, Produced and edited by Angela LarsoConnect with us: Website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube , emailSign up for our newsletter

I've had some incredibly important and valuable conversations on this podcast - yet this conversation may be the one that impacts you and your business the most. When considering flexible packaging options, the vast majority of my podcast guests and clients at FoodPak value a sustainable solution for their brand and consumers. Despite the material structure of the package, often times it's the end of life infrastructure available in the local municipalities that dictate what sustainable means, and the available options that you have for your product and business. This episode lays it all out on the table - especially if you are frustrated with the lack of information and greenwash surrounding the recyclability or compostability of flexible packaging out in the world. After listening to this discussion you will have a clear understanding of the current and future end of life systems for flexible plastic packaging in North America, and what that means for your business. ______________________________________ Colin was the director of the Recycling Council of Ontario and executive director for the Pollution Probe Foundation from 1982 - 1989.  In 1989 Colin established CIAL Group - An independent environmental policy and program consulting firm with significant experience in the design and implementation of pollution prevention, lifecycle management, and Sustainable Development projects within the private sector. Since 2015, when the first mattress recycling program began in Connecticut, 136 Connecticut municipalities offer direct access to the Bye Bye Mattress program through transfer stations, public works yards, and municipal collection events.

The majority of residents in Lethbridge believe in the importance of recycling and keeping waste out of the landfill. The City's Waste Diversion Policy has led to specific targets for reducing waste in both households and businesses with the goal of cutting the overall community waste in half by 2030. The Residential Waste Diversion Strategy is targeted to reduce the amount of waste residents send to the landfill with a 50% waste diversion rate by 2021 and a 65% waste diversion rate by 2030. These goals can be reached by implementing effective and proven programs that increase waste diversion such as Introduction of a Curbside Recycling Collection Program and a Curbside Organics Collection Program. The business sector also has a large part to play when it comes to reducing waste. Targets for waste diversion in the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) sector include a 25% waste diversion by 2021 and a 45% waste diversion by 2030. The City of Lethbridge is committed to market recycled materials and to keep it out of the landfill, include quarterly reports from the broker, including end market performance, assessment of market continuity, percentage of materials not suitable or that were disposed of, utilization of environmentally responsible end markets etc. As these programs gets underway, the City aim to have a transparent process to demonstrate where materials are being recycled and share that information. The speaker will elaborate on the details of waste diversion and describe issues that are likely to affect future policies. No official list of banned products have yet been released, but it can be expected to copy Last year, at the G7 summit in Quebec, Canada and four other leading countries signed a charter pledging that by 2040 all plastic products produced in their countries will be reused, recycled or burned to produce energy. So far, that charter has been agreed to by 21 countries and dozens of companies. Newfoundland and Labrador has announced it will become the second province to ban the distribution of plastic bags. The provincial government introduced legislation on Tuesday allowing it to ban their use at stores and other retail outlets. It says the ban won't take effect for between six and 12 months, to give consumers time to get in the habit of bringing reusable bags. Lillian Brummet began her writing career after a life-changing vehicle accident prompted her to reconsider the direction of her life. Having been a business owner for 6 years she had a good understanding of what being self-employed involved.Throughout her 13 years in the world of writing, she has taken many writing courses and read as many writer's manual books she could. Starting as a freelance writer, then working in a few staff positions and a 7-year stint as a professional book reviewer, she then dove into the realm of book writing. Now, she is the award-winning author of 5 books including her 378-page guide for authors titled: Purple Snowflake Marketing - How To Make Your Book Stand Out In A Crowd. Her reputation online as a marketing guru and pink bunny (because her marketing efforts keep going and going), led her to produce this guide offering effective, efficient marketing tools for authors helping them avoid pitfalls along the way. Awards: Dave and Lillian Brummet have been recognized as Community Heroes by the LiveSmart BC program. They have been presented an award for "outstanding use of various media in ongoing outreach work to reduce waste in our environment" by the Recycling Council of British Columbia.
