David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank, returns to talk with Mitch Ratcliffe about the groundbreaking social enterprise's effort to transform plastic waste into economic opportunity. Plastic Bank has created a “global bottle deposit program" that partners with companies to incentivize the collection of ocean-bound plastic in vulnerable communities. Plastic Bank provides vital income while reducing plastic pollution, with over 3 billion plastic bottles already intercepted from entering our oceans.Since David last visited with Earth911, there has been a lot of growth and, recently, Plastic Bank introduced a subscription program that small businesses can join to support better plastic collection.David explains that regeneration as a practice can provide prosperity for all. In the face of the systemic trainwreck threatening human, animal, and aquatic life on the planet, we need not just a recycling system but a functioning society built on shared values, not exclusion from the opportunity to earn, influence the direction of our communities, or the right to a healthy environment. Hummus as a Force for Good: Joey Bergstein and the Sabra Story

Did you know about the correlation between declining smoking rates and increasing hummus consumption? It's true—a decade ago, as American smoking rates were falling, hummus consumption began ascending, leading numerous tobacco growers to convert their fields to chickpea production instead.  Hummus is also a favorite of those seeking to eat plant-based while still getting a satiating snack or meal. In fact, in the Middle East, the birthplace of hummus, it's not eaten as a dip like it is here in America, but rather hummus itself is the bulk of the meal, enjoyed literally by the bowlful as I've personally witnessed—and enjoyed—while in Israel.  Some people even think that hummus may be among the key ways to unite the Middle East, where various cultures have been enjoying hummus for thousands of years. But one place where hummus hasn't been enjoyed for millenia: North America. But one Israeli company set out to change that, Sabra, which has caused an explosion of interest in hummus since it entered the market, especially since the company sold half of its shares to Pepsi. Since then, Sabra has rapidly accelerated hummus' popularity here in America.  Today, Sabra sells hundreds of millions of dollars of tubs of hummus and is by far the largest player in the sector. In this interview, we chat with Sabra CEO Joey Bergstein about all things hummus, including why he thinks hummus is such a force for good in the world—including why chickpeas are the OG of regenerative crops—and how Sabra can do even better.  Discussed in this episode The switch from tobacco growing to chickpea growing. NuCicer, a cool startup breeding a higher protein chickpea. Joey recommends listening to Revisionist History podcast. Long before Joey was CEO, in 2014 Sabra petitioned FDA for a standard of identity for hummus, something about which Joey says in this interview the company is no longer concerned. Together with his team, he transformed the business through sustainability-driven product innovation, advocacy-led marketing, and deep partnership with retailers. This combination more than tripled revenue during his tenure, all while building a purpose-driven culture and pursuing the company's quest to transform the world into a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable place for the next seven generations.    A graduate of University of Western Ontario's Richard Ivey School of Business, Bergstein began his career at Procter & Gamble where he held marketing leadership roles over ten years across North America and in Europe.  He then took on leadership roles in the beverages industry, serving as VP beverages industry, serving as VP Global Business Development and then VP Marketing at Molson and then as Senior Vice President of Global Rum at Diageo where, Joey led a global team that doubled the rum business to over $1 billion, transforming Captain Morgan into the fastest growing premium spirit brand in the world.     Joey has been recognized by CERES for his leadership addressing Climate Change receiving the 2020 CERES BICEP CEO Award and by his fellow Ivey Alumni receiving the 2020 Ivey Alumni Achievement Award.  Joey and his wife, Andrea, founder of Scribblitt.com, now live in New York City.

Welcome to Episode 55 of the Sustainable Ecommerce Podcast! https://sustainable-ecom.com/ep55 This week's show is the fourth one in our mini series on rethinking waste.  So far we've touched on ocean plastic and how Plastic Bank is rethinking that as a resource is generating significant social and economic opportunity. And we've looked at mechanical recycling of textiles with Upparel, and how they are actively stitching together supply chains for the recycled fibre, then chemical recycling with Blocktexx where blends are being split out and turned into new PET chips and organic paste to be used in soil regeneration projects. So today we move onto footwear.  110 million pairs of shoes are imported into Australia every year, and basically without rethinking used footwear as a resource, they all end in landfill.   My guest today has been spearheading the recycling of shoes since 2010 and I think you will agree has an extraordinary depth of experience and pedigree in the business-for-good movement.  John Elliott is the founder of Save Our Soles, they're the organisation behind every shoe collection box you maybe have seen or used at stores like Foot Locker, Rebel Sport and just about everyone else. We learn about the Save our Soles process in today's show, but with John's deep industry experience I found the whole conversation fascinating, even if it does get a little philosophical in places.

Welcome to Episode 53 of the Sustainable Ecommerce Podcast! https://sustainable-ecom.com/ep53 Today's show is the second episode in our mini-series on rethinking waste, and we turn our focus from plastic to mechanically recycled textiles, taking a look at the downstream uses for the recycled material and how you can get involved.  Now you may be aware of some of the alarming statistics of this already, but the average Australian throws out 23KG of textiles per year, giving us the dubious honour or being the second largest consumer of textiles per capita in the world, behind the US. And if you sum those number up, with 26.3 Million people in Australia, that adds up to something like 604 million KG of textile waste every year. Clearly, as brands we need and responsibility to change this equation. So to help on that path, my guest today is Michael Elias, founder of Upparel. As you'll hear, the demand for domestic recycling of textiles here in Australia has enabled Michael to transition from ecommerce brand selling subscription socks to Australia's largest mechanical textile recycler, in just a couple of years.   A little like Plastic Bank that we spoke to last week on the show, Upparel have a strong focus on transparency and traceability when it comes to knowing exactly what your brand is recycling, and where that recycled material ends up.  Perhaps most relevantly for the topic of this series, one of the most exciting parts of Upparel's ecosystem is how they're constantly innovating and working with downstream partners to rethink ‘waste textiles' as a resource, replacing other virgin materials in a range of products from the fillers in boxing bags to home insulation. That means that whether your waste problem related to overstock, returns, deadstock, post consumer product or even staff uniforms, Upparel has a solution to help you keep material out of landfill.

Welcome to Episode 52 of the Sustainable Ecommerce Podcast! https://sustainable-ecom.com/ep52 My guest today is Shaun Frankson, co-Founder of Plastic Bank.  They're a Canadian technology company on a mission to stop plastic before it reaches the ocean.  To date the partnerships they've enabled between brands and coastal communities have prevented almost 4 billion bottles worth of plastic from entering the ocean, 88 million KG. They're not just collecting that plastic from shorelines and dumping into landfill though, they're fundamentally rethinking waste as a resource and turning it back into recycled flake at scale. While big brands can get involved and actually work with them to secure a predictable source of fully traceable averted plastic to help replace virgin plastics, any brand in any region can get involved, make an impact in the plastic pollution problem as well as huge social impact in the lives of families and communities most affected by the issue.

Join us for an impassioned conversation about the potential for recycling progress with David Katz, founder of Plastic Bank, a social enterprise that partners with consumer products companies to create incentive programs in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa that help prevent plastics from reaching waterways, seas and the ocean. He joined us earlier this year returns to share an update about the company's progress. Plastic Bank has partnerships with SC Johnson, Henkel and others. Plastic Bank pays individuals in emerging economies to collect plastic turn it in at more than 600 branch locations. The collected plastic is recycled to make Social Plastic® feedstock, a raw material for making new plastic products. David also discusses the recent Greenpeace report that argues plastic recycling, including new molecular recycling technologies, does not work — it's an overstatement in our opinion, but the system definitely needs an upgrade.David's assessment of Greenpeace's conclusion: "Shame on them. It's one thing to say it doesn't work. It's another to say, 'Let's make it better.'" So what can we do? He advocates reducing the use of plastic overall, standardizing any necessary single-use plastic on recyclable materials, and that brands and society find a way to compensate people to collect and recycle the plastic we do use. Making the recycling system work may require incentives — but only 10 states have bottle bills the provide small payments for returning plastic bottles. We talk about what can be learned from Plastic Bank's work in emerging economies. Besides reducing our consumption of single-use plastic packaging, new legislation or private support are needed to turn the corner. That's James McCall, chief sustainability officer at HP. Yes, I'm back in the desert, but this time I'm taking about ocean bound plastics. Specifically the stuff HP is using in 99 percent of its new devices. You see, plastic manufacturing is actually a bit of a scam. On 18 July 2017 the sovereign nation of the People's Republic of China filed a notification of technical barriers to trade with the World Trade Organisation. This is a routine process and the WTO gets dozens of these a week. No stress, right? Wrong. Because the items listed under the standardized codes were all targeted at things that have polymer in its name. Namely, plastics. Pretty much all plastics cannot be sent to china for recycling. And ever since then the world has been in an arms race to make plastic recycling profitable. The uncomfortable truth of plastic recycling is that new plastic products cannot be made only out recycled plastic. The other truth is that most plastic is not easily recyclable. You know that triangle arrows with a number inside? That's not a recycling sign, it's a polymer ID code. South Africa only has the technical capacity to recycle three of the seven polymers within our borders. Well, to be fair we can process the others, but it gets tricky. The codes you should look out for as perfect recycling targets are one, two and four. One (PET) is pretty much all detergent bottles, juice bottles and those blue plastic water bottles. Two (PE-HD) covers milk and shampoo bottles, almost all plastic bottle tops, and all your household container – off brand Tupperware stuff. And plastic crates. Four (PE-LD) is all your packaging bags like milk sachets, bread packets, the plastic covering the 18 pack of toilet paper and the frozen vegetable bags – this is the main stock that our bin bags get made out of. The tech industry, however, is targeting something called ocean bound plastics. Samsung gets even more specific and uses fishing nets, for instance. HP sources its recycled plastic stock from an organization called The Plastic Bank. They're based in Port Au Prince in Haiti, a nation that didn't have a functional waste disposal system until a couple of years ago and the waste was just dumped wherever. These guys are fighting crushing poverty and this crazy rubbish problem at the same time. A wrinkle in the grand plan of plastic recycling is that in Haiti the cost of recycled plastic goes down in lock step with the cost of natural gas. In other countries there's a similar problem where its just easier and cheaper to keep making virgin plastic from oil – it's a biproduct of fuel refining after all. Samsung partners with a number of smaller organisations across the Indian ocean. But back to China. The about turn in its recycling stance is all about the drag processing the world's plastic waste was having on the healthcare system. Even when countries sort the waste and then ship it, the energy intensive recycling process is also terrible for the environment and overall human safety. So as it stands only about 10 percent of our plastic that we use actually gets recycled. It's a bummer and a major economic waste, but it is better than nothing. So kudos to Samsung and HP for leading in respective industries. You know what would be great, though? If these technology giants started making fewer products more thoughtfully. Devices crafted out of more premium materials that are easily recycled numerous times – think metal and glass – and last a really long time. But that's a story for another day

How does plastic get from your bin to the recycling plant? According to The Pew Charitable Trust, 60% of plastic recycling globally comes from individual waste pickers, an informal economy of millions of people who go out picking up plastic every day. As the world starts to look at ways to reduce our plastic waste, how might this impact the livelihoods of the waste pickers who rely on it? We hear from Gladys Mwamba at Plastic for Change in Zambia, who spotted an opportunity to use her Chinese language skills by acting for local waste pickers selling to Chinese recycling firms. On a larger scale, a for profit social enterprise called The Plastic Bank in Canada is working with over 20,000 waste collectors in Brazil, Indonesia, The Philippines and Egypt. They offer above market prices for plastic, alongside subsidised education programmes and other necessities such as food and fuel. Rich Gower, a senior economist at Tearfund, a Christian international development charity, tells us why an international plastics treaty this year is a key moment for waste pickers. In many countries waste pickers are organising into unions or co-operatives. We speak to representatives from SWaCH, a co-operative of waste pickers in Pune, South India, that has been running since 1993. Presented and produced by Beatrice Pickup. The program partnered with Plastic Bank in 171 unique coastal cities to clean up plastic waste and helps the environment by directly impacting people taking part through its plastic collection in exchange for food, water, and education. The program started in 2021 with Clarity One Day contact lenses and expanded to the CooperVision My Day product line this year. The net plastic neutrality program collects and reprocesses plastic material into the global market. In the first year, the program collected an equivalent of 22 million plastic water bottles. To put it into perspective, Hseuh explained, if the bottles were stacked on top of each other, “it would be 13 times taller than the Empire State Building.”After adding the My Day family of products and expanding the partnership with Plastic Bank, CooperVision has set the goal of collecting the equivalent of 55 million plastic bottles this year, which is more than double the impact made in 2021.Hsueh expressed that the practitioner and offices can benefit from aligning with CooperVision's net neutrality plastic products and initiative. A majority of US consumers report that sustainability is a significant factor in maintaining loyal patients. When practices align themselves with the values of their market, it creates an emotional connection. Emotional connections lead to word-of-mouth referrals. Doctors can gain a competitive edge in their market with this differentiator. Furthermore, 8/10 surveyed that wear contact lenses would be more interested in wearing them if the lens was net plastic neutral.CooperVision is committed to sustainable practices. Plastic is vital to the hygienic delivery and sterile production of contact lenses. Both facilities that manufacture One Day and My Day products focus on four pillars of sustainability which include water, energy, recycling, and the individuals involved in manufacturing. The facilities aim to conserve water and recycle plastic use in production.

The Vancover, B.C., startup compensates more than 30,000 plastic recyclers in the Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, and Egypt. To date, Plastic Bank has stopped over 99 million pounds of plastic waste - the equivalent of more than 2 billion plastic bottles — from entering the world's oceans, and the pace of it collections is accelerating. The people who collect plastic are paid for the material they deposit at more than 511 Plastic Bank branches. Katz's team has partnered with more than 200 companies, including Procter & Gamble, HelloFresh, L'Oreal and Coca-Cola, to create circular economies in plastic packaging.Their next goal is to capture 10 billion bottles, which still represents only 1.7% of the 583 billion produced in 2021, according to Euromonitor. David explains that a shift in mindset from extractive ownership to regenerative stewardship can break the economic mold and bring prosperity in regions where so much valuable material currently is treated as waste. Plastic Bank uses a blockchain-based data collection and reporting system that helps collectors track their earnings and which provides transparency and traceability for the plastic captured. Plastic Bank works with plastic recyclers to convert the collected bottles into SocialPlastic, a raw material for making new products. Human societies have produced more than nine billion tons of plastic since the 1950s. Nearly all of it ends up as trash, polluting our environment and our communities. Most of that plastic waste disproportionately affects the most vulnerable, and it's become a social justice issue. In this episode, Morgan Stanley Chief Sustainability Officer Audrey Choi speaks with several guests on the front lines of thinking about and solving for the plastic-waste-as-social-justice problem, including: Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank's Regional Vice President for East Asia and the Pacific, to understand how plastic waste impacts the health and livelihoods of low income residents; David Katz, founder of The Plastic Bank, a social enterprise that creates recycling solutions in emerging-market countries, such as Haiti and Indonesia; and Ellen Jackowski, Chief Sustainability and Social Impact Officer at HP, a global technology giant that has integrated solving for plastic waste and highlighting social justice into its business decisions.DisclaimersThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co. Can we solve the problem of ocean plastic pollution and end extreme poverty at the same time? That's the ambitious goal of The Plastic Bank: a worldwide chain of stores where everything from school tuition to cooking fuel and more is available for purchase in exchange for plastic garbage -- which is then sorted, shredded and sold to brands who reuse "social plastic" in their products. Join David Katz to learn more about this step towards closing the loop in the circular economy. "Preventing ocean plastic could be humanity's richest opportunity," Katz says. Hosted on Acast.
