Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris dissect the two Nintendo Directs we just had. First, the super weird Nintendo Switch Direct, featuring some fantastic surprises like Rhythm Heaven and Marvel Invasion, among others. It was an odd choice to drop this Direct so close to the Switch 2 one, but it was a pleasant surprise. Then, the big one. The Switch 2 Direct. They break down everything they learned from the Direct itself and all the various haphazard announcements surrounding it, including its ill-advised pricing structure, the tech specs, and of course, the games! What did they make of Donkey Kong Bananza? How awesome does Mario Kart World look? Why does Metroid Prime 4 look so much better on Switch 2? Why does that new From Software game look like hot garbage? Find out! Plus, Dan continues to get better, especially following his super posh vacation, and Kris got to see the Minecraft movie, which was way more fun than he expected it to be. Enjoy! What do Mario 64 and Wingspan have in common? Both are games that we turn to when we need to give our minds a break and relax through stress, anxiety and the like. What does Metroid and Rhythm Heaven have in common? They're among the last games that Nintendo will publish on the Nintendo Switch. We chat about what will likely be the last Nintendo Direct for one of the greatest consoles of all time. And, naturally, we chat through the games of April. Plenty coming there to look forward to!

In this episode of the Vookcast, Ollie, Michael, Angelo, and Luke discuss the surprise Nintendo Direct in depth — likely the last Switch-only Direct ever. They go over the new Metroid Prime 4 footage, a couple of new Sony-owned games, a brand-new Rhythm Heaven game, a new app, and major changes to digital files... and that's before they get sidetracked. They also reveal their final predictions for the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct just days before it airs. It's all finished up with a nail-biting round of Nintendo 20 Questions.Relevant stories:Metroid Prime PlayStation games??You =(Tomodachi LifeNintendo TodayVirtual Game CardsThe Whole DirectSend us a textSupport the showSocials Ollie: @chocobalt on Bluesky Luke: @renderman7 on Bluesky Angelo: @manjell0 on Bluesky Michael: @subelement on Bluesky Find Vooks on social media, support the show and buy merch. Jonno and Zantok step to the beat towards Rhythm Heaven with their very own Marshal moveset!
In this month's episode, Rich (singlebanana) and Shawn (GrayGhost81) get into the groove as they peck and flick their styluses to the beat of two Nintendo DS rhythm games, Elite Beat Agents & Rhythm Heaven. These two very Japanese-esque titles are very fun and quirky, but couldn't be more different in terms of gameplay, sound, and art styles. Which of these games did the guys prefer over the other? Who couldn't even finish the first stage of Rhythm Heaven? And whose frustrations made them murder their couch with a stylus? Tune in and fine out! Also, be sure to check out the Concertcast this month where we discuss our favorite soundtracks primarily recorded by a single artist or band. As always, we are happy to hear your thoughts on the games we play on our discussion page (linked below). We will respond to your comments and are always happy to discuss the games in more detail. Please be sure to rate and write a review of the show on iTunes and/or Podbean to help us increase our listenership. Thanks for the listen, we hope you enjoy the show! In the mid-2000s, Nintendo threw their rhythm-based games hat into the mix with the Game Boy Advance Japanese exclusive, Rhythm Tengoku. From smooth jazz to ska to hip hop infused metal, this series has it all when it comes to musical genres! Last year, Hyle lost a bet that he now has to make good on. The consequence? Letting notorious Kongversation caller "Mametchi" co-host an episode of the show. Yes, it's a very bizarre edition of the Kongversation! We're ostensibly here to talk about Universal Studios' upcoming Super Nintendo World park and the possibility of a Donkey Kong minecart ride, but we're really at the whims of Mametchi for this one.

Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross read your responses to Elite Beat Agents and Rhythm Heaven.
Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross groove to Elite Beat Agents and Rhythm Heaven. This summer, we decided to let our listeners decide which rhythm games we should play. The resounding winners were to non-peripheral Nintendo DS rhythm games that couldn't be any more different. Elite Beat Agents is soaking in charm, but we find a lot of problems with it mechanically and musically. Meanwhile, Rhythm Heaven is drenched in charm, and manages to be in the upper echelon of games we've played for the show. The music game genre has been around for almost 30 years, and in this episode we trace the genre from it's birth until today, along with our special guest Tyma. It all started with the NES title Dance Aeorobics and the obscure Famicom Disk System release Otocky, which we take some time to talk about. Following this was a hiatus of a few years before Parappa The Rapper became a huge success when it was released in 1997, and we talk about our memories of playing the game and the waves it made in the videogame press at the time. As Tyma puts it: "Parappa is the music game that every music game strives to be." We also devote some time to talking about Beatmania, an arcade series which has seen yearly releases for almost 20 years and cover some obscure titles like the terrible Stepping Selection for Playstation 2. You'll have to have an absurd love of karaoke to enjoy this particular title. Tyma makes a good argument for why the Game Boy Advance title Rhythm Heaven is the most important game ever made.
