So we finally have a week that isn't dominated by bad news. But don't get me wrong, it's still there. From more layoffs to more physical media options being lost to the expectations that our RAM pricing issues will only get worse. But let's focus on the good for a bit at least. Summer Games Done Quick raised over TWO MILLION dollars for charity and that's just an absolutely wonderful thing to share. I'm not sure where it stands among previous efforts but it doesn't matter. Anything raised when there was none before is always a good thing. In the “captain obvious” segment of the news we heard that analysts predict a slump in console sales on the horizon. Given the fact console prices keep increasing this didn't really take a particularly strong set of mind powers to foresee. We again state, as we have for a while now, the best time to buy was yesterday. The second best time is today. This advice will now continue to be the case until sometime in 2028 or further. And Ubisoft made the news but not for good reason as there have been more layoffs after the VERY successful launch of the Black Flag remake. They still have not yet released Splinter Cell. Ubisoft, it's been 4,717 days since a new Splinter Cell game (non-animated series or guest spot in another game franchise, remake, BBC radio drama, or VR exclusive) was released. Also, there's been 8,527 job losses in the gaming industry since January 1, 2026.
We kick off this week's show talking about the new Corrosive items coming in WoW patch 12.1, and reminiscing about the good ol days when our buddies would stack insane amounts of Corruption in order to make healers contemplate a grippy sock vacation. Speaking of healers losing it, we have a few more weeks of Turbulent Timeways: we're up to Shadowlands, and your last chance to start stacking your buff for the icy protodrake mount. Also, Matt thinks that the new 6-month subscription bonus mount, the Sunflare Driftmoth, is secretly judging him. What a moth has to be snobby about is anybody's guess. There was a bit of Diablo discussion, as there were a few little events and a few hotfixes to discuss. We ended on a high note, talking about some of the runs we enjoyed from Summer Games Done Quick, which raised over $2.4 million for Doctors Without Borders. There were a few upcoming releases discussed. Just a couple weird lil guys Liz is looking forward to talking about next week. We'll see you then.If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. John continues sharing his experience with Evil West on PS5, and Ryan spends time watching SGDQ and talking about standout runs. They also discuss the shutdown of Mario Kart Tour this September, with no offline version planned. And Wesley LeBlanc has a few opinions about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time too, after finishing a fresh replay. Then, we dig into Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced with Wes and Charles Harte, to determine whether this fresh take on a pirating classic is a treasure or not. Alex and Marcus Stewart both have some indies to discuss, too: Don't Let It Starve and Cat Mail Co., to be specific. The new Zul'jan quest line just went live, so we're looking forward to World of Warcraft patch 12.1, which includes a new Player Housing exterior. Maybe. We hope. And we're not Monkey's Paw-ing this thing either, so don't act like we said it and that's why it's on the store. We already firmly rejected that possibility, so it is not on us if it goes down like that.Speaking of Monkey's Paws, Summer Games Done Quick is live, and Microsoft took that as a challenge, seeing if they could finish games as a whole really quickly by firing 20% of Xbox employees. This included closing many iconic game studios, some of which are going independent (again), and some being bought out by another party. There are some silver linings here, but it's a tough summer for people who make or enjoy games.A new Hearthstone expansion also released this week, so we have the lowdown on Escape from Violet Hold. It involves a jailbreak and Vanessa Van Cleef, so we're going out on a high note.If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. On this week's episode, Nathan and Gita are joined by Kotaku's Reb Valentine to discuss that which has long been prophesied (derogatory): The Xbox layoffs finally happened, and they've somehow proven even worse than expected. Thousands of jobs lost, seemingly with little regard for institutional knowledge or what the people in question actually, you know, did. Now remaining teams—cut to the bone—are left to pick up the pieces. Why did Microsoft choose to go about things so haphazardly? What happens to the studios that got hit the hardest, and is the decision to put Obsidian, in particular, on Fallout a sign of things to come? And who, really, is to blame for this catastrophic unforced error? Then we talk about a small handful of bright spots in our week—for example, Summer Games Done Quick, which is just the best. Lastly, we (joined briefly by Chris Person) rave about the new version of Ghost In The Shell.Credits- Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Gita Jackson, Chris Person, & special guest Reb Valentine- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. I'm going to be at ATL Comic Convention on Saturday, July 19th, running a panel with the performance actors from Red Dead Redemption 2 at 2PM! Last week, I was at Summer Games Done Quick 2025, reading donations and helping raise over $2.4million for Doctors Without Borders. The SAG-AFTRA strike against video game companies is now officially over, and everyone is back to work with better pay and more AI protections. Subnautica 2 was delayed despite being ready, the founders of the studio outsted, and a $250million bonus not hit because they will not make their revenue targets by the contracted deadline due to the delay. Then we talk to Rob about the news I missed while I was at SGDQ.

Ghosts of K'aresh and its newly announced release date were the first topic in this week's Blizzard Watch Podcast, which is likely to be the final patch for this expansion. Story spoilers weren't shared, but we are excited to find out where we're going next. Our guest host Cory joined us since he's one of our resident Warcraft Rumble experts, and unfortunately that skill set is considerably less in demand since we got word Rumble is in maintenance mode. And it just wouldn't be a Blizzard Watch Podcast without a complaint about monetization these days, but King Krush is so cute, and so expensive, and so gamble-y. Plus, we're all about Summer Games Done Quick and the wacky hijinks those speedrunners get into -- including Blue Prince! If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. I will be hosting at Summer Games Done Quick 2025 on Thursday and Saturday! I'll be hosting a Super Metroid race, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Super Mario 3, and a Kirby Super Star Ultra TAS! I will also be at the ATL Comic Convention on July 19th to moderate a panel with the performance actors of Red Dead Redemption. I was at Southern-Fried Gaming Expo and played some games (including a dual screen Commodore 128 game!), helped run a panel about obscure games, and moderated a panel with video game voice actors. It was rumored (and proven true after recording) that Microsoft was going to lay off thousands of people in their Xbox division. Beat Saber is ending support for PlayStation platforms, and will only allow multiplayer and new DLC for the Steam and Meta Quest platforms going forward. Then we talk to Rob about SFGE and Fantasy Life i.

I was at MomoCon working with the Momentum 2025 speedrun marathon! I will be back at Summer Games Done Quick 2025 as a host! SAG-AFTRA is now pushing back over Fortnite's use of James Earl Jones' voice to say generative AI voice lines instead of trying to work with existing voice actors who have taken over the Darth Vader character in other games. There are a few games that can't run on the Switch 2, but it's really not as surprising or bad as you think. Then we talk to Rob about how we're going to be at the Southern-Fried Gaming Expo in Atlanta on June 18-20th and also running a panel about overlooked classic games.
In this episode, we discuss random brags, game launches, and game design. Launching a game is like preparing for a fireworks show. Timing is everything.
