This episode has been a long time coming, as Josh and Shea have been wanting to talk about this game for years. Crosscode, a game created by Radical Fish Games and Deck13, is an action RPG that tells the story of Lea, who finds herself in the MMORPG called Crossworlds…but she has no recollection of who is she or what she's doing there. As she explores Crossworlds, she meets many characters who both help her and challenge her. The deeper she gets into the world, a mystery starts to unfurl. The conversation takes many interesting twists and turns, as Josh and Shea discuss the superb writing, the future of AI, and framing of a narrative. In this episode Mike, RIch and Steve take a look at Christopher Smith's (Triangle) latest film, THE BANISHING - a supernatural tale set on the eve of World War 2. Christopher Smith's films are known for having a twist in their tails - is this one any different? Next we have a look at THE COLUMNIST, a film from The Netherlands which has garnered a lot of buzz following its festival showings last year. Now we get to pass judgement! Our final main review is BLOODY HELL, a horror comedy about the perils of travelling to....Finland? Take a listen! Also check out my interview with the film's screenwriter and editor, ROBERT BENJAMIN! Our Short Shot is CONTAINER, an intriguing tale of time travel as a lone scientist tries to send himself back in time without affecting the rest of the world. Click the link to see the whole film! Finally, in our DTV Throwback we take a look at CROSSWORLDS, which has a very interesting cast including Rutger Hauer, Jack Black and Josh Charles! As is usual, you can find this on Amazon Prime. Don't forget to check us out on TWITTER and FACEBOOK for the DTV Chart and news of other upcoming releases.
CrossCode is a retro-inspired 2D action role-playing video game set in the distant future, combining 16-bit Super NES-style graphics with a fast-paced combat system and puzzle mechanics. Players control a mute character named Lea as she plays a fictional MMORPG known as CrossWorlds. The game begins with a young woman called Shizuka Sakai fighting her way to rescue her brother, but once she finds him, he dies in her arms. Some time later, a girl called Lea awakens inside a cargo ship with no memories of her past and is informed by a man called Sergey Asimov that she must play the MMORPG "CrossWorlds" in order to regain her memories. Once reaching the game area, she befriends another player called Emile and the two explore the game together, eventually joining the "First Scholars" guild.
Rutger Hauer passed on July 24, 2019. This is a look back at his movies and what lessons we as writers can learn from them. This includes looks at Osterman Weekend, Ladyhawke, Flesh+Blood, Blind Fury, Blood of Heroes, Wedlock, Surviving the Game, Crossworlds, Lexx (don't ask), and some silly little movie that we all need to forget the 2049 version of....Please support WCRI by pledging at our Patreon page (https://www.patreon.com/twosparrows).
The SQGC team logs in to CrossWorlds to uncover the mystery of Lea, the avatar who is stuck in the game and is only able to say a few select words. It's time for CrossCode! Come back and see us in December as we take a look back at the year of 2018 in gaming and talk about the highs and lows, and what we're looking forward to next year! ------------- Audio Credits: Rolemusic - Bacterial Love RoccoW - Lady Bad Luck VRC6

No matter how good or bad The Dark Tower may or may not be (we'll get to that in a future bonus episode coming soon to sound waves near your), we can all agree that UNFORGIVEN and CROSSWORLDS is a pairing that no other podcast has dared to attempt! (Perhaps for good reason...) What did we end up thinking about either movie? Who was right about Unforgiven -- Josh or Rob? And was Crossworlds worth the stretch undertook to include it in the episode? These questions and more can only be answered by listening to our discussion of both these movies. Enjoy! Wait. What? What do the Academy Award-winning modern western classic starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, UNFORGIVEN, and the barely remembered world-hopping sci-fi bomb starring Rutger Hauer, CROSSWORLDS, have in common? Well, other than Eastwood and Hauer playing badasses, not much! If you're familiar with the soon-to-be-released The Dark Tower, based on Stephen King's beloved series of novels, then you might be able to piece it together from those descriptions. If you aren't familiar, well, you'll just have to listen to the episode to find out. And be sure to come back in two weeks when we discuss the movies after watching them. Pop some No-Doz for this one – we go from best to worst in a single week! We’re dialing our time machine back to 1996 for the much-ado-about-nothing film Crossworlds. Ah, the 90s. It was a simpler time, as the horribly dated CG will show you. Plot and logic were also out the window, because when you have an artifact that lets you travel the multiverse, why NOT waste it dicking around in the desert and an office building the whole time? Josh Charles fizzles as a too-reluctant hero who’d rather stay at home and not pay his parking tickets, Andrea Roth tries to channel Cynthia Rothrock’s karate kicks, but can only execute them at a Cleopatra 2525 level, and Rutger Hauer fails as the mentor who’s on his asshole period. Add in a supervillain with demigod-like powers, but no idea how to use them and you get a movie that’s way more fun to talk about than watch. Love it or hate it though, don’t puke around here – you’ll turn inside-out. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bmoviebreakdown/support
