Este es uno de esos videos que hago… sencillamente… ¡porque me apetece! Porsche tiene el récord de victorias en Le Mans, ¡nada menos que 19! Y os aseguro una cosa… no hay ni uno solo de esos ganadores que no sea una belleza estética y técnica… ¡vamos a divertirnos! Se podría decir, simplificando un poco si me lo permitís, que la leyenda de deportividad de Audi se cimenta en los rallyes, la de BMW en las carreras de turismos y la de Ferrari se gesta, sobre todo en la F1. Porsche ha tenido un papel muy relevante en los Rallyes, aunque nunca ha ganado un Mundial de marcas; no ha participado en turismos porque no tiene turismos, pero si excelentes y triunfadores GT; y también ha triunfado, como motorista, en la F1. Y por supuesto, ha ganado muchas carreras y Campeonatos del Mundial de Resistencia. Pero donde Porsche ha cimentado su fama como coches de competición ha sido, sin ningún genero de dudas, en las 24 Horas de Le Mans. Y como vais a ver, motivos hay y muchos… Vamos ya con esa lista de 8 coches excepcionales, del primero al último. Porsche 917 K (1970 y 1971). El 917 se convirtió en todo un mito casi desde el principio. Desde luego no puede ser más bonito, pero es que técnicamente era impresionante. Siempre os recuerdo una cosa, ¡estamos en 1970, hace 55 años! En 1970 ganaron con Hans Hermann y Richard Attwood y en 1971 con Gijs van Lennep y Helmut Marko y ya con los colores de Martini Racing, que hicieron buenas migas con Porsche. Porsche 936 (1976, 1977 y 1981). Con este precioso coche con carrocería abierta ganaron 3 años, dos de ellos consecutivos. El cambio de reglamento que rebajo la cilindrada a los 3 litros “mató” en Europa al 917. Además, en las carreras de resistencia la penalización por llevar turbo era menor: En la F1 si montabas turbo la cilindrada máxima era de 1,5 litros y en Le Mans, de 2,1. Hablando de pilotos, hubo uno que estuvo presente en las tres victorias de este 936… a ver si lo adivináis, es habitual del programa, le dedicamos un vídeo… otra pista, es belga… por supuesto hablamos de Jacky Icks. Porsche 935 K3 (1979). Ni el coche era un claro candidato para la victoria ni los pilotos eran de los más renombrados, hablo de Klaus Ludwig, Bill Whittington y Don Whittington… pero ganaron. Porsche 956 (1982, 1983, 1984 y 1985). Entramos en una era en la que Porsche arrasa en Le Mans. Con el 956 consiguieron 4 victorias consecutivas, pero hay quienes consideran al 962 una simple evolución del 952, con lo cual serian en toral 6 victorias consecutivas y 7 en total. Y Porsche supo elegir un plantel de pilotos de primera fila, en 1984 Jacky Ickx, de nuevo, y Derek Bell, de nuevo. En 1983 Vern Schuppan, Al Holbert y Hurley Haywood, en 1984 Klaus Ludwig y Henri Pescarolo y en 1985 de nuevo Klaus Ludwig, Paolo Barilla y Louis Krages. Porsche 962C (1986, 1987 y 1994). ¡Otras 3 victorias al saco! Este modelo nació en los USA y era fruto de las normativas de seguridad que, como en la F1, prohibían que los pies del piloto estuviesen por delante del eje delantero. Para ello se incrementó su distancia entre ejes en 12 cm. Y de nuevo, Porsche recurrió a pilotos de primera. En 1986 Derek Bell, Hans Stuck, piloto de F1, y Al Holbert. En 1987 repiten el mismo equipo y en 1994 más pilotos de F1, Mauro Baldi y Yannick Dalmas junto a Hurley Haywood. Porsche Spyder (1996 y 1997). Desaparecieron los Grupo C y llegaron los LMP1, barquetas, spider, en definitiva, otra vez abiertos… me gustan más cerrados. Este no es desde luego el Porsche más bonito, pero si era endiabladamente eficaz. En estos años la llegada de los pilotos de la F1 a Le Mans ya era masiva. En 1996 el equipo fue Manuel Reuter, Alexander Wurz y Davy Jones y en 1997, verdadero equipazo Michele Alboreto y Stefan Johansson, pilotos muy competitivos de F1 y Tom Kristensen, verdadero especialista en Le Mans, donde alcanzó 9 victorias, 6 de ellas consecutivas. Porsche 911 GT1 (1998). Un Porsche 911 bien hecho… bueno no…. un Porsche 911 ¡muy bien hecho! Lauren Aïello, Allan McNish y Stéphane Ortelli tuvieron la fortuna de disfrutar de esta joya y de llevarla a la victoria. Porsche 919 Hybrid (2015, 2016 y 2017). La era híbrida trajo tres victorias consecutivas para Porsche con un coche realmente sofisticado. Y por el chasis, por supuesto de fibra de carbono, sino por, como se dice ahora, sus “unidades de potencia”, que eran dos. Los pilotos fueron Nico Hülkenberg, Earl Bamber y Nick Tandy en 2015, Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas y Neel Jani en 2016 y Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley y Earl Bamber. Pilotos de calidad y eficaces, aunque no estrellas… y es que el coche era muy bueno. Mucho.

La historia del automóvil está llena de mitos y curiosidades… y de mentiras e inexactitudes. ¡Vamos a reescribir la historia! Te hemos traído 10 mitos ó 10 datos históricos, más un “Bonus”, que son falsos… para que luego presumas con tus amigos lo mucho que sabes de coches… sobre todo con tus amigos que no ven Garaje Hermético. 1. James Dean: El coche “maldito”. Vamos con la parte que es verdad: Dean circulaba a gran velocidad y en el cruce de la ruta 41 con la 466 impactó con un Ford Custom Tudor. El conductor del Ford, un tal Donald Turnupspeed, tuvo varias fracturas, pero Dean moría camino del hospital. La leyenda cuenta que “Little Bastard” fue comprado un amigo de Dean, George Barris, y que al cargarlo en la grúa se rompió el cable y partió las dos piernas a un mecánico; y luego que el coche se despiezo en partes y todos los que usaron elementos de este coche tuvieron graves accidentes… 2. Alfasud: Acero ruso. El Alfasud es un modelo injustamente tratado por la historia, porque fue muy innovador en su momento y se puede decir que creó una categoría. Pero hay múltiples “leyendas negras” sobre este modelo. La que más gracia me hace es la del “acero ruso” que cuenta que este coche no tenía la calidad deseada porque estaba hecho con acero ruso de mala calidad proveniente del achatarramiento de las armas soviéticas. 3. Benz MotorWagen: El primer automóvil. Te invito a un ejercicio: Pon en Google “primer automóvil” y te saldrá que es el Benz 1 Motorwagen de 1885. ¡FALSO! Primer automóvil de motor térmico. Porque en 1834, el profesor holandés Sibrandus Stratingh y su asistente Christopher Becker crearon un automóvil eléctrico alimentado por baterías no recargables. Incluso hubo intentos anteriores, como el del químico escocés Robert Andersson en 1832… 4. Porsche: Sinónimo de éxito en Le Mans. La primera participación de Porsche en la 24 Horas de Le Mans fue en 1951, con un 356SL. Pero la primera victoria absoluta no llegó hasta 19 años después, cuando en 1970 con el Porsche 917 KH, ocupó el primer puesto con Hans Herrmann y Richard Attwood. 5. El Escarabajo: Un diseño de Porsche. No me voy a extender porque hicimos un vídeo reciente sobre el tema donde demostramos que Ferdinand Porsche copió a Joseph Ganz y a Tatra… 6. Usar aluminio en el Land Rover: Una genialidad. Cuando en 1947 los hermanos Wilks tuvieron la brillante idea de producir un 4x4 barato no solo pensado en un uso militar, sino en un vehículo sencillo y copiaron el Jeep se encontraron con un problema: La escasez de acero. Por pura casualidad la carrocería del Land Rover se hizo de aluminio, porque era más barato y fácil de encontrar. 7. El Citroën Traction Avant: Primer tracción delantera. Si decimos que el Traction Avant es el primer coche de tracción delantera fabricado en grandes series, sería cierto. Pero si quitamos “grandes” y decimos “el primero fabricado en serie” pues el falso. El peculiar Bucciali TAV-6 de 1922 fue el primer tracción delantera y se presentó en el Salón de París de 1922 tenía entre otras muchas, innovaciones, un sistema de tracción delantera, algo “delicado” y que fue su “Talón de Aquiles” … 8. Ford T: Primer coche fabricado “en serie”. Otra vez tengo que decir, ¡FALSO! Fue el Oldsmobile Curved Dash de 1901, un modelo técnicamente mucho menos adelantado que el Ford T que contaba con un motor monocilíndrico de 1.560 cm3 y alcanzaba la terrorífica velocidad de 32 km/h. 9. VW Escarabajo: Vendidos por “suscripción”. Ya sabéis que el VW, el “Coche del pueblo” nace con la idea, supuestamente, de motorizar a la clase media alemana. Hitler mandó construir una fábrica, incluso una ciudad que aún hoy existe, Wolfsburgo, y para comercializar el coche lanzó una especie de cartillas de ahorro. Lo cierto es que ni antes ni por supuesto durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial se entregó un solo coche a un particular, todos fueron a parar a manos del ejercito o del Estado Alemán.. 10. Coches eléctricos: Lo “último”. Me río de la “modernidad” de los coches eléctricos. Ya habéis visto que el primer coche fue eléctrico, pero os doy otro dato: En el año 1900 la cuota de mercado de los eléctricos en los EE.UU. de Norteamérica era de más del 25 por ciento. ¡Bonus! Los híbridos: Un invento reciente. Depende… ¡y de que depende! De lo que consideres reciente. ¿100 años es reciente? Porque hace más de 120 años un jovencito llamado Ferdinand Porsche, con solo 24 añitos, ya diseñó un modelo híbrido que fue todo un éxito. De ese coche se vendieron 300 unidades desde 1900 hasta 1906.

Murray Smith is the Festival Chairman at the Lime Rock Park Historic Festival that takes place at the historic Lime Rock Park race track in Lakeville, Connecticut during Labor Day weekend. Now in its 35th year, it’s five days of events including a concours, parade, a gathering of the marques, an auction, and vintage racing. This year famed British driver Richard Attwood is the Honored guest for the Historic Festival. Murray was born in Scotland and ran a successful career in advertising helping clients from around the world. His enthusiasm with cars has been life long. He is a member of the BRDC and the RRDC and has raced and rallied in both modern and historic cars around the world. He’s owned numerous historic automobiles including: Porsche RSK, RS60, F2, 917, Maserati 250F Birdcage and 300S and today he drives Morgans, Porsches, and a pre 1930 Austin Seven.

This month the team sat down with Richard Attwood, winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1970. Regular listeners will know how entertaining Richard can be after Ed's evening with him and David Piper. Nigel also commented afterwards that he has rarely known a racing driver with such incredible recall. For fans of the Porsche 917, Richard's experiences of the car's difficult early days and his Le Mans win with Hans Herrmann will be particularly interesting. On November 8 Dick Lovett hosted a special Ferrari evening in its new showroom just outside Swindon. We say showroom, but really it's a Ferrari mecca. As well as Peter Lovett talking to the crowd about how the dealership started, I sat down with David Piper and Richard Attwood to talk about their careers racing Ferrari sports cars.
