This month, we're delving into the thrilling world of Formula 1 racing—a high-octane blend of speed and data analytics that drives innovation both on and off the track. Joining us is Rob Smedley, renowned F1 race engineer and strategist with extensive experience at Ferrari, Williams, and the Formula One Group. We'll discuss Rob's journey into this fascinating sport, how data shapes race strategies and driver development, and the biggest transformations AI has brought to Formula 1. Whether you're a motorsports fan, data scientist, or simply curious about cutting-edge technology, join us to explore how data fuels Formula 1's future. Our guest: Rob Smedley, CEO and Founder of Smedley Group, an advanced technology business whose mission is to make motorsport faster, fairer, cleaner, and cheaper.
In this week's edition, we look back at this November episode, exploring how F1 teams make key decisions on areas like driver recruitment, development, and race strategy and comparing it with how things are done at a top Premier League football club. F1 is a sport built around technology, whereas, in football, the smartest teams have only begun using technology in the last decade for recruitment, strategy, in-game tactical decisions, and more. With James to compare how Mercedes recruited Kimi Antonelli with how Liverpool FC discovered Mo Salah, we have two experts in their fields. Rob Smedley, former race engineer to Felipe Massa, head of track engineering at Williams and who now runs Smedley Group which advises across the F1 spectrum on data and AI. Dr Ian Graham, of Ludonautics, was famously head of the data department at Liverpool FC for 11 years. His data analysis played a key role in building the Jurgen Klopp team that won the Premier League and Champions League. His book How to Win the Premier League is a brilliant guide to the way key decisions get taken in an elite sport. Quiere ganar siempre, a cualquier precio. He estado allí. Motor racing has a long tradition as an incubator of technology. AI is the latest example as tech companies flood into the sport as partners, helping teams harness AI to improve performance. F1 increasingly uses AI in its TV and online coverage to provide insights and content tailored for fans. The FIA is also getting in on the act; this week it announced that AI will now help the F1 race officials and play a role in sensitive decisions on things like track limits and analysis of race incidents. So what impact is AI already having on F1? Where might it get involved in the future? And should there be a limit to how far it goes? We hear from a panel of industry experts: Rob Smedley, CEO of Smedley Group, Former F1 Director of Data Systems; Ferrari and Williams engineer, Joe Carroll, General Manager, Telco, Media, Entertainment, Games and Sport, Amazon Web Services and Stephane Timpano, CEO Aspire, which runs the A2RL autonomous racing league, where the AI coders are the stars. In the studio with James are Autosport's F1 Business Correspondent Mark Mann-Bryans and Sam Agini from the Financial Times. The F1 season is almost over. Max Verstappen has joined Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel as a four-time world champion. But there is one very important matter still to resolve. The Formula 1 Constructors' Championship may not have the same caché with fans, but it matters a lot to the teams; it dictates how much F1 prize money they earn. But this year it means even more; for the first time in 16 years, the two teams fighting it out are McLaren and Ferrari. This has echoes of the great years of Schumacher and Hakkinen of Hamilton, Alonso, Raikkonen and Massa. Ferrari hasn't won the title since 2008 and McLaren hasn't won it since 1998. Whoever wins, it's going to be epic! Which of these great names will prevail? Who has the stronger drivers? And how did we get here, when the season started with a series of Red Bull 1-2 finishes? With James to discuss this are; Rob Smedley, former race engineer to Felipe Massa at Ferrari, BBC Commentator and former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestly and Autosport's own Jake Boxall-Legge. This week we speak to the man with arguably the hardest job in F1: Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur. Fred is bringing Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari next year. We get into that with him, what (or who) else Ferrari still needs to win a world championship and how Fred uses humour to get his way. He talks about managing the fragile confidence of Ferrari team members and how he is pushing them to take more risks. Former Ferrari F1 engineer Rob Smedley of “Fernando is faster than you” fame helps us read between the lines along with Motorport.com Italy's F1 Editor Roberto Chinchero. Fred Vasseur, 56, has been in motorsport for 35 years. He had huge success in F3 and GP2 (the forerunner of F2) with ART – making champions of drivers like Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hulkenberg. He came into F1 in 2016 as boss of Renault F1 team, (now known as Alpine) he joined Sauber in 2017 and gave Charles Leclerc his F1 break with the team. He transferred to Ferrari for the start of the 2023 season and is now a multiple F1 Grand Prix winner.
"Yeah baby!" Do you remember Rob's classic F1 radio conversations with Felipe Massa? Well, we've tracked him down in the UK for a feature episode, and it's a ripper. From growing up in the north, impressing at University and getting a break in motorsport on the engineering side that would see Smedley spend the better part of his life in the Formula 1 paddock with memorable stints at Ferrari and Williams. Rob's delves deep into his vast time in pitlane, which also included time shaping some legendary cars in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at the height of the incredible arms race between the manufacturers in the two litre Super Touring era. He graciously took a break from his work with the Global Karting League, a groundbreaking initiative he's passionately leading, to join us for this conversation. The project is creating a buzz in the karting world and providing unprecedented opportunities in Motorsport to those who previously may not have had the chance to begin. The ex-Formula 1 engineer who added personality behind the pit wall, making race radios a highlight of the broadcast, and his colourful commentary remains a hit on platforms like TikTok and YouTube to this day. In the second instalment of our series, we delve into his dynamic collaboration with Felipe Massa, recounting events from the harrowing crash in Hungary in 2009, which led to pivotal changes in helmet safety, to the intense 2008 championship finale that narrowly eluded them and has recently resurfaced in the media. A special mention goes to Rob's nephew, Ted from Western Australia, who sat alongside his uncle during the recording in silent fascination, captivated by the stories of Smedley's adventures, perhaps even drawing inspiration to tread a similar path in the future. Rob Smedley, CEO and Founder of Smedley Group, joins me to explore After Action Reviews (AARs) as a tool for driving positive change. We delve into a lot more than AARs though, as Rob has built his company around a very clear mission that is about disrupting the motorsport industry. He is also taking the lead in the business by very intentionally creating a team that can develop, innovate, and perform at the same high standards that he is used to from Formula 1. His focus on building the culture, behaviours and expectations that are necessary to succeed in business today are what drove Rob to engage with the AAR process. When we hit ‘pause' and ask the right questions, we are able to highlight strengths and find out what can be done differently next time to make the experience more positive and make it easier to engage and perform.Yet, in many organisations, people feel the need to cover their back and find who's to blame when things don't go as well as they could, rather than focus on the learning. An After Action Review, within a climate of psychological safety, provides huge insight that is directly relevant to drive positive change.Rob shares how the AAR has impacted on practice. He has found the process so valuable that an interim AAR is on the cards; why wait until the end of a project to review it?More about RobRob Smedley has over 20 years of experience in the world of motorsport, having spent time at multiple F1 teams including Jordan, as a Race Engineer at Ferrari and as Head of Vehicle Performance at Williams before taking on the Director of Data systems at Formula 1 from 2019 to 2021. Today’s podcast is with ex- Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley, who has recently launched the Electroheads eKart race series. We talk about democratising grassroots motorsport, what an F1 race engineer actually does and how to set up an F1 car.
The ability to think, plan, and execute in a clinical fashion is the key to realizing transformation. More now than ever, organizations need to rapidly and accurately assess situations, experiment quickly, and scale up with relative ease to keep pace with market changes. Rob shares how the dynamic of racing prepared Formula 1 for the race schedule disruptions and their business response.
His voice is as familiar as the racing drivers he worked with, with classic lines such as “Felipe Baby Stay Cool” and “Fernando is Faster than you”. Rob Smedley is the former Head of Vehicle Performance at the Williams F1 Team, before that he was of course Felipe Massa's race engineer at Ferrari until they collectively hopped across to the British team. He can now be found providing expert technical consultancy to Formula One and at the helm of his own, grassroots all-electric karting series hoping to make the sport more affordable for youngsters looking to take their first steps up the motorsport ladder. It’s the last episode of 2019 & we’re introducing a new section of the show called “grumpy old CFDistas get a bit bah humbug about stuff” which may not become a regular feature. 3 Invaluable Lessons from Rob Smedley It's absolutely critical to invest in people and focus as much time on building relationships as you do projects. It is essential to collaborate with the Owner from day one. Communicating effectively with the entire team is key to the success of any collaborative project. This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with Rob Smedley, the Design-Build Manager Buildings for RS&H. Rob is an AIA, DBIA, and has more than 30 years of experience on a variety of projects. Rob shares about the importance of using Design-Build concepts on projects and communicating effectively with your teams. Rob’s Journey into Design-Build (02:49) Rob's path was fairly typical, from school to intern, and then as a designer, moving into project manager, then project architect, and ultimately to principle. The shift came from an acquisition by an AE firm and Rob was introduced to new technologies in design and it spurred him into a whole new direction. The Biggest Challenges with Design (09:45) The keyword is People – staffing resources and finding quality people is difficult Evolving Technology: "Technology is great, but it's evolving daily” Generational workplace expectations and communication skills Opportunities for Design and Construction Collaboration (14:58) Progressive Design-Build Method The importance of the Owner in the collaboration of "the trinity" (design, construction, integration) Partnering – it is critical and one of the Best Practices identified by DBIA Utilization of new technologies The Barriers to Design, Construction, and Owner Integration (19:59) "People" are the greatest challenge Being comfortable with change The pressure of time: "Slow down and move with some purpose” Having Better Project Integration (25:53) Invest in relationships and doing the "off-season work" Rehearsals – practice standard protocols Partnering: "raising the bar" in communication efforts Communication and "melting away" complexity Rob’s Greatest Strengths as a Leader (33:55) Rob cares about the people, the organization, and the projects. One of Rob’s favorite quotes is, "People don't care about what you know until they know you care." - John Maxwell. Rob’s Greatest Career Challenge (35:30) Being fired by a client. In retrospect, learning from the fatal flaw of not being focused on the motives of the client, changed the whole perspective. Rob Smedley, AIA, joins me to discuss challenges with managing the design phase of design-build projects and preserving claims for impacts to the design schedule. Rob is the Design Build Manager for Buildings at RS&H and serves as both the National and Florida Region Membership Chair of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). The episode kicks off with examples of standard notice provisions applicable to design delay claims. Rob then offers insight into the design-builder's and owner's role in maintaining the design schedule, and the importance of communication between all participants in the project. Based on his past experience, Rob provides real world examples of breakdowns in the management of the design phase. We also share some quick thoughts on the value of membership in DBIA. This week, for the first time on Beyond The Grid, presented by Bose, we’re not speaking to a driver or a team boss, but to an engineer – and someone who’s been directly involved of some of the biggest moments in F1 in the past 20 years. Rob Smedley is probably best known to most fans as Felipe Massa’s long-standing Race Engineer, and in that role he experienced the full gamut of emotions, from the elation of race wins to the heartbreak of a narrow title loss, and the horror of seeing ‘his’ driver severely injured. We also talk to him about working for Ferrari, issuing controversial team orders, his impending departure from Williams, and why Michael Schumacher – a man he worked so closely with – was much more than a driver…
