Dad's Army 69-12 26 The Coward Review
How far was Brexit powered by Britain's yearning for an Imperial past that can never return? And how useful to the populists who promoted it is imagery like the opening credits of Dad's Army, which shows plucky old Blighty being pushed back to the Kent coastline by the advancing German army? Adrian Goldberg hears from Byline Times editor Hardeep Matharu and two of the paper's writers, Otto English and Jonathan Lis about the influence of the past upon the present and the future.Made in Birmingham by Adrian Goldberg for Byline Times. With Sol Campbell having done the unthinkable, our first full season since both ENIC's takeover and club icon Glenn Hoddle's appointment as manager, was led on the pitch by veteran stars Teddy Sheringham, Gus Poyet, and Les Ferdinand.2001/02 saw Tottenham Hotspur finish some way off European qualification in the Premiership once again, as well as fail at the final hurdle of the Worthington Cup, on what remains our only ever trip to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Another episode from those natural chatty men that give it to you in ten minute sections. Worthy of Brit awards they got burnt out last time on episode 50, get in now while Greg knows the spelling.

Just in case you didn't know...the Yanks landed on the moon 50 years ago and it seems to have received more coverage now than it did back then....personally I can't really see the point in space travel....we need to get things sorted out on this planet before we spend billions to find there's nothing actually out there.....the radio telescope at Jodrell Bank has also been featured on the news which is not far from where I live and I must say it is a very interesting place to visit.....there have been a lot of conspiracy theories about the moon landing and whether it was genuine.....I once visited Tromso in Norway to assist Monty Lister with one of his programmes for Radio Merseyside and met Patrick Moore.....I asked him if the moon landing was genuine and he nearly jumped down my throat shouting "Course it was!! I was there!!"....which was good enough for me.....great bloke by the way. On the same subject I was once on holiday in Florida and a hurricane had just caused serious damage to the south of the state....the TV were asking for donations to help those badly effected.....after a few pints I brought the subject up with a few people around the swimming pool (which wasn't a good idea)....my point being that the public were being asked to donate yet just up the coast was the Kennedy Space Centre which sends billions into space to find nothing...could they not solve the problem down south?.....I nearly caused an international incident...this guy stands up and strolls over like John Wayne and says "We don't see it that way buddy"....despite trying to convince them all I was fighting a losing battle....God Bless America. The BBC are joining up with ITV to provide another channel which ... wait for it...we will have to pay for!!...on top of our TV licence.......it will cost £5.99 a month WHICH IS SIX QUID minus one penny...but it SOUNDS better...and it will feature programmes from the past like Fawlty Towers and Dad's Army etc....you know...programmes we have seen a thousand times.....I'm not quite sure what planet these so called executives are on.....is there ANYONE out there who can supply ENTERTAINMENT?....doesn't look like it does it. On the music scene I was subjected to The Kaiser Chief's latest record whilst driving along in my car....it is called "People know how to love"....a title which is repeated over and over again....this seems to be the norm these days....I find it very irritating....whatever happened to good lyrics??.....ANYONE can write this sort of stuff....get one line and repeat it over and over....it's rubbish.....when you listen to great lyrics by the like of ABBA for example (and they are foreign) it makes you realise what we are missing.these days....then we have the over singing of songs....with vocalists balling and shouting and singing 10 notes when one will do....it obviously fits the bill these days but it aint music........and just a quickie on the Open Golf....it was nice to see Rory McIlroy missing those two foot putts....NOW he knows how I feel every week!!! The song this week is a message to us all....it is called "Exercise" and I wrote it back in the day for the Liverpool Health Authority who were promoting the benefits of exercise at the time....it got a lot of radio coverage and served the purpose....so here it is....get your shorts on and off we go....EXERCISE.

Whattup, whattup! It's our diamond episode and have we got an absolute diamond for you. It's the wonderful actor Holli Dempsey! You might know Holli from Ricky Gervais' Derek or from her role as Vera in Dad's Army or from her starring role in Harlots amongst loads of other ace stuff. We met Holli in our basement / dungeon recording studio at Soho's Maison Bertaux and we had a chat. A lovely, lovely chat. Holli was so honest about her upbringing and childhood and working life. It was enlightening and charming and a bit sad all at the same time. .While sifting through the rubbish we are subjected to on television I actually found a program I enjoyed....it was the story of Jimmy Perry and David Croft who created Dad's Army....it was about the struggle they had to get it off the ground...and the two actors who played them were really good and the chap who played Captain Mainwaring was spot on....it was a brilliant insight into problems of trying to convince TV boffins of the credibility of good comedy...boffins who can't see further than the end of their noses......the pair went on to write Hi-de-Hi which is also classic comedy........................and another interesting documentary was the story of Fawlty Towers...another classic...it was interesting to see how John Cleese stopped after the second series as he felt it had run its course...a wise decision....unlike "Benidorm" which started well but has now reached rock bottom....definitely well past its sell-by date.....sadly great comedy is a thing of the past. 2.I thought after his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing Ed Balls would vanish off the scene....how wrong I was....he features in a new documentary called Travels in Trumpland with Ed Balls....where he travels around the southern states of the U.S.A. meeting Donald Trump supporters......and is he a dark horse or what....he got involved in wrestling...gun handling and even trained with the police and volunteered to be tazered....very impressive stuff which will be the making of him...I now see him in a totally different light....Go Ed !!! 3.Rick Astley was on the Zoe Ball show on Saturday morning....he is going back on tour to promote his latest album....which he made in his garage.....he is a really good personality and is quite modest....he talked about the occasional problems of doing concerts which I can relate to...because of the success of his album he intends to go back into his garage and make another one...a man after my own heart....I built a recording studio in my attic back in the day as I failed to see what difference Abbey Road would make to my records....nowadays with modern technology you can make a record on a computer in your bedroom....so I'm afraid it's goodbye to the greedy major labels....who needs 'em. 4.It is nice to see my pales The Krankies on the Marigold Hotel programme....they really are a lovely couple whom I have known for around 20 years and have written many songs for them which they have used in their many pantomimes over the years............also Donald Campbell's Bluebird has been restored and put back on the water....I actually have a connection to this....back in 1958 I saw a skiffle group called The Atlantics on our local cinema which was the first time I heard an electric guitar on stage....the leader of the group was called John Lomax and he went on to make a cine film of Cambell's last tragic attempt at the world water speed record in the Lake District....the film won several awards and his story was featured in a programme called "Days That Changed The World" a while back...with an actor playing John.....in the mid nineties I met John and we became very good friends....we even formed a skiffle group in 2001 and played at the International Skiffle Convention in Finland.....he was a great guy and a good friend but is sadly no longer with us...as a small tribute I wrote a song for him called "The Story of Skiffle" which we recorded and got quite a bit of airplay. 5.Skiffle was the beginning of it all in tis country so the song this week is in memory of my pal ......."The Story of Skiffle" by Skiffle John Lomax.....a great friend who I still miss.

We cannot believe that it's episode 20! Flown by right? Well, we thought we'd mark the occasion by getting the magnetic DANNY MAYS in for a pot of tea and good old chin wag! We're so glad we did cos this is a very special episode with one of the UK's finest (not to mention, funniest) actors. You'll know Dan from all sorts ranging from his BAFTA nominated turn as Danny Waldron in series 3 of Line Of Duty to his role in Mrs Briggs and on the big screen in Dad's Army and most recently The Limehouse Golem. It was a pleasure to get the kettle on and spend time with Dan. You may think that Craig just knows Dan from Line of Duty but their friendship goes way back 15 years to when they used to be flatmates (stories from those wild days can be purchased for the same price as Da Vinci's Salvator Mundi). Thanks so much for downloading and supporting us at TWO SHOT PODCAST, it's very much appreciated. We really hope you enjoy AND... make sure you stick around for the end as we have some very exciting news that you're gonna want to hear. Here it is EPISODE 20 with DANNY MAYS. Welcome to this week's Failed Critics Podcast. What're the names of our hosts and guests on this episode..? Shh! Don't tell 'em, Steve Norman, Owen Hughes, Brian Plank and Chris Wallace... D'oh! Yes, that was a tedious set-up to reveal that on this podcast we'll be discussing the Dad's Army movie in our new release section. We've also got reviews for you of: heist-thriller Triple 9; a comedy sequel 15 years in the making in Zoolander 2; and the Bryan Cranston starring Trumbo. In the news this week, the team sat down and watched every single film trailer shown at Super Bowl 50. From a Deadpool teaser to the latest look at Jungle Book, a new Bourne movie and even TMNT2. Yeah - don't get your hopes up for that last one is all we'll say right now. More importantly, perhaps, we also try to work out just what the hell is going on lately with Netflix stepping up their attempts to block users accessing multi-regions. Does this slice of Star Wars rip-offery hold up after all these years or is it a pompous relic of 70's self-importance, best left in the memory? Well, it has the muscle car of Sci-Fi spaceships in it so, there's that.Feedback for this show can be sent to: heykidscomics@virginmedia.com

Did you see that MP who resigned over cash for questions;.Patrick Mercer;you gotta laugh;what a twit! he came out with I openly admit my wrong doing;I was a soldier and when soldiers get things wrong they FESS UP;.as if this makes it RIGHT !!...the guy was making a GRAND a day;but it's O.K. because he has resigned.should be behind bars !! There has been blanket coverage of the poor teacher who got stabbed to death, a terrible tragedy;but the media don't help going on about how she was in on her day off and how wonderful a person she was etc etc;.it doesn't help in any way.it needs sorting -not used to pad out the papers.it's a horrible tragedy and I'm sure her family don't want it plastered all over the papers every day. The government are trying to get those on benefit cleaning the streets;.HOW DARE THEY!!...my lad teaches kids who come from four generations who have never worked;the outcry is that if they are subjected to;voluntary work; they wont be able to look for jobs;.but I don't think it's voluntary;wouldn't they be EARNING the money they pick up?...like someone who works for it?....surely cleaning the streets IS a job? Good job we've got widescreen as the new ITV morning programme has FOUR presenters sitting in a line;..it's been slated but then again anything new is always slated;personally I find the new blond girl very easy on the eye;more so than the Beeb's Bill Turnbull. And there is a re-make of Dad's Army underway;it wont work;it has to be the originals;.they tried it with Bilko and Popeye;disasters;who come up with these ideas? and finally Richard Madely sat in for Terry Wogan last Sunday on his Sunday morning programme (which was a vast improvement by the way);he interviewed Wilko Johnson of Dr Feelgood;.this guy was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and was give 4 months to live and he's still here;the interview was top drawer radio;very moving and Madely handled it brilliantly;..it was a privilege to listen to it.

A MAGICAL STEP BACK IN TIME The Goodwood Revival really is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing in the romantic time capsule of the world’s most authentic motor circuit. Leave the ‘Modern World’ Behind The Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It is the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year. The Revival offers visitors the opportunity to leave the ‘modern world’ behind and join motor sport luminaries including Sir Stirling Moss, Richard Attwood, John Surtees and Derek Bell in an unabashed celebration of flat-out, wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic racetrack, untouched by the modern world. Revival First-timers to Compete in Half-century Racers at the Sell-out 2013 Goodwood Revival Two famous names from the world of competitive cycling and motor racing will be taking to the Goodwood track in anger for the very first time at this year’s sell-out Revival (13-15 September) in two cars marking a combined century of motor sport. Celebrated cycling champion and Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy will be taking to the wheel of a Mini Cooper S for his inaugural race at Goodwood in the popular and hard-fought St Mary’s Trophy race for saloon cars. Challenging him for the chequered flag will be ex-Formula 1 driver and TV pundit Mark Blundell, who will also be competing at Goodwood for the first time, in a Lotus Cortina. Both the Mini Cooper S and Ford Lotus Cortina share their 50th anniversaries this year, so it seems only fitting that these two popular and fast-paced British saloon cars will be raced by two very rapid British racers, even if they are both new to the Goodwood Revival!
