¡vamos a divertirnos!

“Endurance races are my profession; hill climbs and rallies are my hobbies. All of it combined is my passion.” No matter what racetrack, no matter what surface, Romain Dumas just wants to drive. He doesn't just longingly chase his dreams, he goes all-out to fulfil them. In 2017, Dumas won his class at the Monte Carlo Rally. During his summer break the Frenchman often heads to the USA to tackle the spectacular hill-climb race up Pikes Peak. With honours: In 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018, he conquered the 4,301-metre-high summit in the Rocky Mountains to clinch overall victory, after having already secured a class win in 2012 and the title “Rookie of the Year”. And he's also successful in his fulltime job: Eight overall wins at the 24-hour races of Le Mans, Nürburgring and Spa. He crowned his Le Mans triumph of 2016 at the wheel of a Porsche 919 Hybrid by winning the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC.

It isn't clear whether CATL's batteries are used in Model Ys.   Original Source : https://www.marketwatch.com/story/catl-extends-battery-supply-deal-with-tesla-271624897015   CHINA'S LARGEST BATTERY MAKER CATL EXTENDS AGREEMENT WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLE GIANT TESLA TO 2025   - Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the Shenzhen-listed electric-car battery maker, said it has reached an agreement with Tesla to provide lithium batteries to the US electric vehicle maker's China production plants for an additional 30 months   - China's largest producer of automobile battery packs said in a stock exchange filing on Monday evening that it reached an agreement last Friday with Tesla to provide battery packs for the US electric vehicle's subsidiary in Shanghai up until December 2025.   - “The agreement signifies further acknowledgement by Tesla of the product quality and production capability of [our company], and will help strengthen the long-term cooperation relationship between the company and Tesla,” CATL said.   Original Source : https://www.scmp.com/business/banking-finance/article/3139085/chinas-largest-battery-maker-catl-extends-agreement   PIKES PEAK WINNERS INCLUDE TESLA MODEL S PLAID   - The 99th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) was crazy, exhausting, dangerous, and one of the greatest motorsports event you can see. Fifty-two drivers and their crew had spent close to a month preparing for the annual time-attack hill climb near Colorado Springs.   - Spectators roam past fences for a better view, and even the blades of the low-flying camera helicopter mostly drowned out the siren required for electric vehicles competing here.   - The true king of Pikes Peak Mountain was back this year: Romain Dumas, the crazy Frenchman who set an unbeaten record of seven minutes, 57 seconds in Volkswagen's all-electric ID. R Pikes Peak racer in 2018.   - Randy Pobst was back too. After sending a Tesla Model 3 flying into a wall at Bottomless Pit, he came back for more. This time winning the Exhibition division with his new Model S Plaid from Unplugged Performance, but still finishing 10 seconds behind a 1996 BMW M3   Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36862669/pikes-peak-hill-climb-results-winners/   ALL-ELECTRIC MUSTANG COBRA JET 1400 ROASTS THE QUARTER-MILE   - Bob Tasca III got behind the wheel of the all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 at NHRA Nationals yesterday and set a new world record. The veteran ran the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 for a quarter mile in 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph, crushing the 8.27 seconds at 168 mph recorded in September of last year.   - The name of Ford's all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 may be somewhat misleading, since it's throwing 1500+ hp to the rear wheels instead of 1400. Ford says that's the equivalent to three 2021 Mustang GT V8 powerplants combined   - According to Ford Performance, this car was built in a collaboration with Cascadia Motion for the inverter and motors and Watson Engineering for the chassis support and development as well as the roll cage. This is Ford's first factory fully electric dragster prototype, launched in April of last year.   - It's nice to watch a race without having to bring ear protection, but does it feel as exciting?   Original Source : https://www.thedrive.com/news/41299/all-electric-mustang-cobra-jet-1400-roasts-the-quarter-mile-with-a-new-nhra-record   VOLKSWAGEN ID BUZZ SPIED WITH PRODUCTION BODY FOR FIRST TIME   - photographers have managed to capture the all-electric van using its own body. Eschewing the Transporter skin used by the test mules, the Microbus for the EV era has been caught wearing the production bodywork   - the prototype hides its final look underneath clever camo. It would appear that VW is going for a Renault van look with the disguise applied onto the ID Buzz's front fascia, featuring stickers on the headlights to conceal the actual clusters.   - The fully covered rear side glass suggests we are dealing with the cargo version of the ID Buzz, unless it's simply body-colored camo to hide the interior.   - Even with all of this makeup, it's fairly obvious the production model will be quite similar to the showcar unveiled four and a half years ago in Detroit.   Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/516718/volkswagen-id-buzz-production-spy-photos/   BMW I3 ERA COMES TO AN END IN THE U.S. THIS JULY   - BMW i3 will soon stop its production for the U.S. market. According to a BMW dealer bulletin, the final production for the electric i3 hatchback is scheduled for July 2021. Over the last 12 months, the i3 inventory for the U.S. was at its lowest point and customers often had difficulties securing a production slot. The latest dealer info suggests that there are only around 180 production slots remaining.   - BMW is now heavily invested in the launch of the BMW i4 and iX next-generation electric cars and there is very little incentive to promote or market the heavily discounted and incentivized i3.   - When it goes out of production – likely in 2022 for the rest of the markets – the i3 will go down as the first and maybe last BMW built on a full carbon fiber frame. When BMW launched the i3 and i8 in 2013, the two projects were not only considered the most advanced within BMW, but also in the automotive world. The first electric BMW and also the first hybrid sportscar from Munich made use of BMW's knowledge in carbon fiber construction, but at a much larger scale.   Original Source : https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/06/25/bmw-i3-era-comes-to-an-end-in-the-u-s-this-july/   AUSTRALIA'S CHEAPEST EV SET TO FALL UNDER $40K MARK IN NSW   - Thanks to the New South Wales Government's new electric vehicle subsidy, the cheapest EV on the Aussie market, the MG ZS EV, just got even cheaper.  Under the new statewide EV scheme, NSW will provide 25,000 eligible buyers with a $3000 rebate and will also ditch stamp duty on electric cars valued up to $68,750. The abolition of stamp duty will also apply to EVs valued at up to $78,000.  This means buyers in Australia's most populous state could conceivably pay as little as $39,670 drive-away for MG's electric SUV, which normally retails for $43,990 drive-away.   - The EV subsidy and stamp duty abolition is part of the NSW Government's recently announced $490 million Electric Vehicle Strategy and will come into effect from September 1 of 2021.   Original Source : https://www.whichcar.com.au/car-news/mg-zs-ev-nsw-ev-subsidy   THE LEVC E-CAMPER IS AN ELECTRIC CAMPERVAN BASED ON A LONDON TAXI   - Holidaying at home is a necessary trend, but all the hotels are booked up. A campervan is the solution.   - Meet the solution to all your woes, an electric-powered camper effectively based on LEVC's London taxi. An e-motor provides power for 60 miles of zero-emission range, while a 1.3-litre engine will buzz to life in the background as a range-extender if your campsite's a little further. Total range is 304 miles, but that engine never drives the wheels, merely a background artist topping up the 31 kWh battery.   - Crucially, all your amenities – including the cooker – will run on electricity alone   - It'll sleep four – two up, two down – while the front seats flip round 180 degrees so you can all dine convivially around a table.   - Prices start at £62,250 excluding VAT.   Original Source : https://www.topgear.com/car-news/british/levc-e-camper-electric-campervan-based-london-taxi   e-Camper | Electric Camper Van   - “The campervan market is growing rapidly and, despite these vehicles being used for coastal and countryside adventures which often include national parks and protected areas, they are still powered by petrol or diesel engines. This is a major conflict; we can see a shift in consumer attitudes, with demand for greener mobility solutions to help to protect and improve air quality. Our new electric, zero-emissions capable e-Camper offers the perfect solution and is well-equipped with high quality features that can be tailored to meet a range of customer requirements.”Joerg Hofmann, CEO of LEVC   Original Source : https://www.levc.com/electric-camper-van/   TESLA OFFERS FREE SUPERCHARGING AT SELECT LOCATIONS FOR FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY   - Tesla owners traveling in California during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend may receive a special perk from the company.

Show #520   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 7th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.             Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Over the weekend I saw PCP added to the Model 3 design studio. For the spec I would have, which is Performance, in black, with Performance upgrade and Full Self Driving that's £59.890. PCP is £6k down and £817 a month over 4 years. Hire Purchase is £937 a month with £10,000 down and over 5 years.   From Don McAllster - waiting for his AWD Long Range Model 3! He has a petition against the 20% tax hike on solar: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/260903   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R IMPROVES GOODWOOD HILL RECORD "On July 6, Romain Dumas made use of another run in the Volkswagen I.D. R at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and further improved its all-time record to 39.9 seconds (compared to 41.18 seconds in the practice run)." says InsideEVs: "Both times beat the 41.60-second time set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld driving a McLaren MP4/13. We're more than certain that 20 years ago no one would have imagined that an electric car could be be quicker than an F1. The Volkswagen I.D. R driven at Goodwood is a special sprint version of the I.D. R, with a smaller battery pack, since the track length is just 1.16-mile."   https://insideevs.com/news/358506/video-vw-id-r-goodwood-hill-record-39-9-seconds/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER ANNOUNCES RANGE OF EVS TO BE BUILT IN WEST MIDLANDS PLANT "Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced it is set to build a new range of electric vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham." reports the Evening Standard: "Honouring its commitment to deliver electrified options for all new Jaguar and Land Rover models by next year, a next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ will be the first vehicle in the range to enter production. Crafted by the team behind the Jaguar I-PACE – the brand's first all-electric car – the new saloon promises to deliver in design, performance and luxury, although the company has given no indication as to when it might take to the road. Marking the next stage of the company's electrification strategy, the news is seen as a major thumbs up to the UK's automotive industry, which has been hampered by factory closures and job cuts in recent years."   https://www.standard.co.uk/futurelondon/cleanair/jaguar-land-rover-announces-range-of-evs-to-be-built-in-west-midlands-plant-a4183371.html   TESLA YOUTUBER BJØRN NYLAND BREAKS 24-HOUR ELECTRIC CAR DISTANCE RECORD "today we’ve seen yet another reason not to worry about the capability to take EVs on long trips, as Bjørn Nyland has managed to drive 2,781km (1,728mi) in 24 hours in a Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD.  Nyland set this record on IONITY quick chargers in Germany because currently, that network is significantly faster than Tesla’s Superchargers." says Jameson Dow for InsideEVs: "Nyland wanted to emphasize that this record could be done in “realistic” conditions, so there was no closed course and common road rules were followed.  The record was set in Germany, on the Autobahn, and was done at high speeds, around 170km/h (105mph) much of the time. Staying at high speeds inbetween stops resulted in an average speed of 115km/h or 72mph over the entire 24 hours.  Essentially, he was able to travel the same distance as if he drove at US highway speeds consistently for 24 hours without stopping at all."   The sweet spot for charging at the fastest rates was 10%to 63% so they were driving a 120km loop.   https://electrek.co/2019/07/05/tesla-youtuber-breaks-24-hour-electric-car-distance-record/   UNITI ONE AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER "The Swedish electric car Uniti One is now available to pre-order with a refundable deposit of 149 euros." reports PushEVs: "Usually, small cars are very boxy with bad aerodynamics, but that’s not the case in this electric car. With two tandem seats – just like the Renault TWIZY – this electric car is perfect for the city environment.240 km range 130 km/h top speed Rear wheel drive Dual motors output of 120 kW 26 kWh battery pack, DC fast charging"   https://pushevs.com/2019/07/06/uniti-one-available-to-pre-order/   THE ODYSSEY 21 IS THE ELECTRIC OFF ROAD RACE TRUCK FORMULA E WANTS YOU TO GET EXCITED ABOUT "The Extreme E car ran up the hill during the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday afternoon. " according to Jalopnik: "According to Extreme E, the truck sits about 7.5 feet wide, 6.2 feet tall, and 14.4 feet front-to-back. The whole thing, ready to rock and roll, weighs some 3600 pounds. Each of the tires is 37 inches tall with tons of sidewall and lots of knobby Continental rubber to keep the thing trucking forward even in the nasty sand, ice, or dirt that the truck will come into contact with across the season. This is just a show car, built by Spark Racing Technologies [the same company which builds the Formula E chassis], to demonstrate what a finished product might look like."   https://jalopnik.com/the-odyssey-21-is-the-electric-off-road-race-truck-form-1836151628   RAJEEV NARAYAN "90% of your listeners may be male but I am not sure that necessarily means that EVs are a "guy thing" Currently 85% of car purchasing decisions are made by women and apparently women are more likely to buy new than men. Men are more likely the ones closing the deal at dealership, but that does not mean that women are not involved in the purchase decision, weather the vehicle is an EV or not.  Maybe a better question is why are 90% of EV news daily podcast listeners male?"   BRIAN WEATHERALL To avoid any generalising I’ll take the safer option and talk about the woman I know the best, my wife, I’m also safe to know she doesn’t listen to your podcast….. She would no more go to an EV event than to the Motor Show, to her a car is a way to go places and spend my money (sorry “our” money I am reminded).  Taking the LEAF means she can spend a little less of her money as she doesn’t need to put fuel in it.  Other than that it’s just a car to her.  But I’m happy it’s usually the first choice out of our two cars as it only really saves money when it’s moving. I can tell you in the UK Nissan Leaf Owners Group the gender split is 75% men,  many are in the group to offer help, some just for the banter, many are there to ask for help, maybe men just need more help?   HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH I do not think the demographics of your listening audience are reflective of how women perceive electric vehicles. For example, my spouse really hates listen to or watching shows about cars, but she loves driving my car (PHEV Prius Prime) in all electric mode. She is really excited about the prospects of replacing her vehicle with a Model Y when they become available in the near future. I also have female coworkers who drive Tesla's and are constantly evangelizing to others the benefits of driving electric cars. It could be that stereotypical males really love learning about cars and statistics about cars as a way of playing verbal top trumps with their friends. Personally, I find knowing about vehicles statics provides me with something to talk about in social settings. Talking about electric cars in comparison with ICE vehicles allows me plenty of material to engage with my muscle car owning friends.   STEVE JAMES Men just enjoy cars more than women across the range so it doesn’t matter if it’s a petrol, diesel, PHEV or BEV men just enjoy cars more than women.   GREG LEFF Hi Martyn -  brief note about the QOTW -here in the southwest United States in an affluent suburb of Phoenix, Arizona we have loads of EV’s running around our streets. It’s no scientific analysis but I would hazard a guess that at least 30% of the drivers of those EV’s are female. That’s a minimum guess - I could be as much as 50% or more. In my own household we have 3 vehicles, a Nissan Leaf driven by my daughter, a BMW i3 Rex driven by my wife, and a gas burner driven by me. So you see 100% of the EV’s in my house are female driven.   What you’re likely seeing in your listenership is the fact that men are more likely to nerd out over EV’s and want to listen to a podcast talking about them. The women just want to drive and enjoy the smooth, quiet, gas-free miles.   BRENNA KAMINSKI I have been involved with EVs since 2012 and after years of running EV education events, advising on infrastructure, and co-founding two EV clubs I decided to launch my own EV consulting service www.evgal.com. Before launching the website I noticed that most of the other consultants out there in the EV world are men, almost all of the videos I watch about EVs feature men hosts and "experts", and the majority of the EV conversations on platforms like LinkedIn are started by men. I know there are other women out there but we aren't being invited into the conversation.   STEPHEN AND MICHELLE LOO I believe your 90% male following on youtube / podcast is simply a representation of the market who follow motoring and technology trends. You will probably find your followers also fall into the 25-65 age group as this is the age group when most would have the income or necessity for these items.   SANDI WILLIAMS I have a Model 3 Performance, and I love, love, love it.  I listen to you probably 4-5 days a week. Did you know that the podcast came pre-loaded as an app on my car? So in case you think woman aren't listening..... this one is, and I love hearing about what is happening in the EV world and it is nice to listen to someone who isn't Tesla bashing.   VAIDAS Was asking my missus last night and she is just simply not interested too much, she needs a car thats able to safely move her from A to B in comfort and style :) I think you mentioned your wife is pretty much the same? Perhaps its a man think to talk about cars, no matter if its a V6 BMW or V8 Mustang or V12 Ferrari or  22kWh Zoe   CHARLIE FOX In the case of my home, I believe it is down to my wife doesn't really care about cars. She doesn't see value in high dollar cars and is perfectly happy with our two Prius (you know, those self-charging hybrids...)   In my case I am, generally, not a car or truck person. However, I am interested in the environment and emissions and from this have been waiting on electrics since GM starting making and crushing cars. And this makes me seek out shows like yours so I can keep up with events and watch for that opportunity to buy.   My wife has moved to agree with me that we will not buy another ICE car and we will very likely buy a 45-50k Model Y in 2022.   TOM RAFTERY Re my own thoughts on your q, driving rightly or wrongly is something men care more about than women. Go out on the street right now and check out the gender of the drivers of the cars passing you and they will be significantly skewed male. How many married couples do you know where when travelling it is the woman who drives primarily when they are going together in the car (apart from returning from the pub!)?   ARON MCINNES Are EV’s a man thing? No I don’t think it is a man thing. I think listening about, researching and dreaming about EV’s is a man thing. It is more likely that men will spend time thinking about a car. Women who drive EV’s love them. I think women just don’t obsess about there next car or what the are going to do with the car they have.   IAIN EV's don't seem that unusual in my group of friends and I wonder if gay men are more likely to be environmentally conscious and as a result are more likely to be interested in electrified transport.   DAFYDD I think men are generally more likely to be nerds, for a number of reasons. Some of which may be, that many view cars as more than just a tool, to get from A-B. Women despite some men’s attempts, still do most if not all of the family & house things. And all too often have very little time to obsess about irrelevances, such as this car can do that with only that; or will do more with less.   DAVID FINCH I checked the list of people who use our workplace EV chargers, and found that there are 7 men and 5 women. A small sample, and near enough to even. So, I think women are just as likely to own and drive an EV as men. I think men are more likely to geek-out about them though, such as listening to a podcast or visiting Fully Charged Live.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH In the early days of computing, computers were also a "male" thing until social media came along. As soon as that happened, women became interested as they could now indulge their top priority - relationships.     Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Show #490   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 3rd June 2019. VW ID. R SETS EV LAP RECORD AT THE NÜRBURGRING-NORDSCHLEIFE Volkswagen Motorsport on Twitter: "6:05.336 minutes! New electric lap record by the Volkswagen ID.R on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Another milestone in electro-mobility."   2nd fastest lap of the circuit, EVER.   Clips   com said: "Romain Dumas, a race car driver and Porsche factory driver, set the lap record in the I.D. R after setting the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record last year using the same car. However, for the Nürburgring, Volkswagen had to modify the vehicle to conquer the iconic track. While Volkswagen kept the same twin motor and battery set-up used during its record-breaking Pikes Peak run, the automaker did a lot of work to maximize the vehicle’s downforce and acceleration. To achieve its top speed faster, Volkswagen changed the energy management system."   https://www.motor1.com/news/352745/volkswagen-id-r-nurburgring-record/   TESLA SUPERCHARGER V3 ROLLOUT Tesla’s Version 3 (V3) Superchargers will first begin rolling out in locations used for long-distance travel, according to an update provided by CEO Elon Musk. He additionally revealed during a recent interview on Ride the Lightning, a weekly podcast hosted by Ryan McCaffrey, that first generation Superchargers will also be prioritized for replacement." says Teslarati: "Despite Tesla’s open patents for utilizing its Supercharger technology and declared willingness to allow other manufacturers to access its network, Musk said that he hasn’t yet been contacted yet about sharing its facilities and technology. On the topic of developing its Supercharger Network, Tesla’s CEO also explained that the company tries to stay ahead of demand and avoid congestion, but empty Supercharger stations are not in the company’s best interest, either. Also, business permits can slow down expansion efforts despite Tesla’s best efforts to meet its customers’ charging needs. Overall, it’s a balancing act between congestion and freedom to travel."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-supercharger-v3-rollout-long-distance-stations/   MERCEDES EQE ELECTRIC SEDAN DUE 2022 TO RIVAL TESLA MODEL S "The recently launched EQC is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes down to Mercedes’ new “EQ” family of pure electric vehicles. The three-pointed star has already previewed an entry-level car in the form of the EQA compact hatchback and also a people-mover with the EQV. We also know for a fact that a pure electric version of the GLB compact SUV will arrive in 2021 with the EQB moniker, while a flagship EQS sedan is also on the agenda for a release the same year as the S-Class of electric cars." reports Motor1.com: " Mercedes is also working on an EQE, which according to Autocar was mentioned in a document released by the Chinese Ministry of Information and Technology. Developed under the “V295” codename, the EQE will allegedly be shorter than the conventionally powered E-Class Sedan while offering space inside the cabin similar to the S-Class."   https://www.motor1.com/news/352668/mercedes-eqe-sedan-2022-launch/   NEW TESLA ROADSTER IMAGES EMERGE "Tesla's design center in Hawthorne, California is where the design magic takes place for Tesla vehicles, including the upcoming, new Tesla Roadster and the Tesla Semi." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "For a recent interview of Pawel Pietryka, Creative Manager of User Interface Design at Tesla, conducted by the WorkWithUs website, Tesla released some new images of the Roadster, as well as one with the Tesla Semi and design team, too."   https://insideevs.com/news/352262/tesla-roadster-images-new/   RESIDENTIAL BATTERIES ARE FIVE TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES "A household battery is about five times the cost of an electric car battery measured in installed $/kWh. A household battery is about five times the cost of an electric car battery measured in installed $/kWh." writes reneweconomy.com.au: "Residential batteries should be able to get economies of scale in the factory in the same way that auto batteries do. So even though the absolute cost is always likely to be higher because of inverter and installation costs they both should be moving down the cost curve at a good rate. What we see though is good progress in the auto side of costs but no visible movement in the residential side."   https://reneweconomy.com.au/residential-batteries-are-five-times-more-expensive-than-electric-car-batteries-40236/   ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES UP 70% IN EUROPE "The European passenger plug-in vehicle market scored some 37,000 registrations in April, growing 30% compared to the same period last year, a good performance considering that the overall market is still in the red (-1% in April)." reports CleanTechnica: "In April, fully electric vehicles (BEVs) jumped 70% year over year (YoY), to some 24,000 deliveries, and were responsible for 65% of all plug-in sales in the month."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/03/electric-vehicle-sales-up-70-in-europe-april-ev-sales-report/   CHINA HAS WHOLE TOWNS FOCUSED ENTIRELY ON MAKING ELECTRIC CARS "Shunde is one of at least 20 electric-centric versions of Detroit under construction as China goes all-in on a technology projected to sell in record numbers this year. President Xi Jinping wants the nation’s 500 electric car makers to be magnets for ancillary industries as he pushes to build a manufacturing superpower by 2025." says Bloomberg today: "The amount of investment committed to developing these EV towns is a staggering 209 billion yuan -- equal to about $30 billion -- so far, according to Bloomberg calculations based on public announcements. "   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-02/china-s-spending-30-billion-to-assemble-its-electric-detroits   LYFT OFFERS FREE EV CHARGING TO PORTLAND DRIVERS "Lyft might have a way to recruit more EV drivers: top up their cars for free. The ridesharing service has teamed up with Portland General Electric to offer free EV charging in the Oregon city's metro area to eligible drivers from July 1st onward." says Engadget: "The free charging comes not long after Lyft outlined plans to go carbon neutral, and fits in with the company's overall hopes of reducing its environmental impact. "   https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/01/lyft-free-ev-charging-portland/   VICTORIA POLICE LAUNCH FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC OPERATIONAL VEHICLE "Victoria Police has taken the first steps in what could be the biggest development in police vehicles since their introduction almost 100 years ago, becoming one of the first jurisdictions in the world to put an all-electric vehicle into its operational fleet." I found on the official police website Police.vic.gov.au: "From today, Victoria Police’s Road Policing Command will utilise the all-electric Tesla Model X in highway patrol operational duties, a first for an Australian police organisation. Victoria Police purchased the five-door, five-seat SUV as part of a feasibility study into developing fully integrated electric, IT-based police vehicles for fleet use."   https://www.police.vic.gov.au/victoria-police-launch-first-all-electric-operational-vehicle   SWISS POLICE PURCHASE FLEET OF 13 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC "The cantonal police of St. Gallen in Switzerland introduced a fleet of 13 Hyundai Kona Electric, out of which five serve in patrol colors and the remaining eight ‘civilian’ models will be used for general services." reports insideEvs: "According to Hyundai, the Kona Electric was the only model that fulfilled the requirements of cantonal police"   https://insideevs.com/news/352495/swiss-police-hyundai-kona-electric/   Question of the Week.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #457   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 28th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   And thank you to another Patreon supporter who has moved up from Producer to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER LEO   And thank you to Sascha Pallenberg who was my original PARTNER of the show and supported me for over 6 months, and came to the end of his support (for now!).   INCOMING DAIMLER CEO WEIGHS BILLIONS IN COST CUTS "As Daimler's incoming CEO, Ola Källenius will soon be making decisions on where to take an ax to costs as the automaker adjusts to the headwinds of trade tensions, plateauing sales and a pricey electrification strategy. The new boss reportedly is looking for about $6.75 billion in cost savings and efficiency gains by 2021 at Mercedes-Benz car plants." reports Automotive News today. From Ola himself: “There's no two ways about it, the world is going toward zero-emission in the long term. For us, in the next five to 10 years, battery electric vehicles play an absolutely crucial role to go there. Our strategy toward electrification is based upon three pillars. Every single combustion engine that we will have will get a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Then, we will have plug-in hybrids in every segment. And we will have a full family of EQ battery electric vehicles. We don't have [full hybrid vehicles] in the planning right now. We believe that plug-in hybrid at this point is a better use for the customer because you can truly drive electric up to a certain distance. The cost structure of electric vehicles in this first generation or two are definitely higher than what we used to have on the combustion [engine] side. It's one of the main tasks as we scale and further develop the technology, primarily on the battery side, to drive that cost down. That will take many years. It is our goal to be a profitable business. The business case with the electric vehicles has to be profitable, as well."   https://www.autonews.com/executives/incoming-daimler-ceo-weighs-billions-cost-cuts   WATCH TESLA ROADSTER RACE FERRARI FORMULA 1 CAR: SIMULATED VIDEO Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "The next-generation Tesla Roadster will supposedly boast a range of some 621 miles or more, but it's not just its insane range that makes the electric supercar so impressive. In fact, some would argue that its range figure takes a back seat to its insane level of performance. When first revealed, Tesla released these specs on the new Roadster:   7,376 pound-feet of torque 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, making it the quickest production car in the world. 0-100 mph in 4.2 seconds Quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, which beats every other production car. 250+ mph top speed"   "Now those are truly some impressive stats, but is the new Roadster fast enough to outpace a Ferrari Formula One race car? In the real world, probably not (though the Roadster does have a slight 0-60 MPH edge over an F1 car, which typically hits 60 in 2.1 to 2.7 seconds), but in the world of flash/CGI, anything is possible."   https://insideevs.com/news/346945/video-tesla-roadster-race-ferrari-f1/   RICH (RE)BUILDS A TESLA GARAGE "Rich Benoit runs the popular YouTube channel, Rich Rebuilds, where he takes broken-down Teslas and brings them back to life, documenting his journey each step of the way. Now he and his business partner, a former parts manager at Tesla, are opening up a repair shop to help stem some of the demand for Tesla service. Tesla customers have often complained about having to wait weeks to get their cars serviced."   https://finance.yahoo.com/video/tesla-rebuild-rebel-leveraging-youtube-130005159.html   TESLA MODEL Y GOES ON DISPLAY "Tesla recently had a Model Y on display for employees to see outside of its seat factory at 901 Page Street in Fremont, California, roughly 3 miles from the company’s main factory. In photos posted by multiple Reddit users, it appears the same deep blue metallic Model Y driven on stage and used for test drives at the car’s unveiling event last month was available in the building’s parking lot for a closer look." writes Dacia for Teslarati: "The vehicle on display is outfitted with chrome-delete trim, a look that’s popular with the Tesla aftermarket community yet a standard factory offering for the Model Y. Additionally, the all-electric crossover is seen with Tesla Sport Wheels in the color black. Tesla offers Sport Wheels in silver as a $1,500 option in the Model 3 and Model Y online configurator."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-spotted-fremont-seat-factory/   BOATHOUSE CHARGES YOUR E-BOAT USING SOLAR/WIND "Lithuania’s VM Productions, who developed the VM800 and VM900 all-electric fishing trawlers (8m and 9m respectively), are now testing an electric boat house/garage that has integrated wind turbines and solar panels to charge the batteries of any electric boat or car." reports PlugBoats: "Sarunas Danilavicius, Export Manager at the company, told news agency BNS Lithuania that the boathouse will have 12 wind turbines. the wind turbines are vertical-axis and make up a sort of ‘second storey’ of the building surrounded by screening instead of solid walls. Solar panels sit on top of the roof of the whole structure."   https://plugboats.com/boathouse-charges-your-e-boat-using-solar-wind/   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R PREPS FOR NURBURGRING RECORD "Volkswagen has completed its first testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife with its Volkswagen I.D. R racer ahead of an official attempt to break the lap record for an electric car. As part of the extensive testing, Romain Dumas once again took the wheel to hone the battery-powered Volkswagen I.D. R on the tortuous 20.8km-long track." reports Motoring.com.au: "Already a four-time Nurburgring N24 winner, Dumas used his experience to adapt the Volkswagen I.D. R with a team of engineers to modify and evolve the former Pikes Peak winner to the bumpy, uneven surface of the former F1 track. To steal the lap record for a pure-electric car, the Volkswagen I.D. R racer must beat the 6 minutes and 45.90 seconds set by the NIO EP9 two years ago.>   https://www.motoring.com.au/volkswagen-i-d-r-preps-for-nurburgring-record-118190/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK Jon Brooks / Kents EVs The daftest thing I’ve ever heard regarding EV’s came from a small time legacy auto maker. They claimed their hybrids are self charging! I mean, come on....what utter drivel :0)   RAJEEV NARAYAN One of the saddest and potentially harmful misconceptions about EVs that I have seen is that their manufacturing and operational life cycle are more harmful to the environment than diesel or other ICE vehicles. This misconception has been given further life by flawed studies that incorrectly overestimate the lifetime mileage of ICE vehicles and underestimate mileage of EVs and completely discount battery recycling, and dropping cobalt concentrations, as well as ignoring the thousands of deaths per year attributable to NOX, and other particulates.  Moreover, the growth of electric ride sharing, over traditional car ownership by many, will increase the number of miles driven by vehicle, and further limiting environmental impact.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH Hi, Martyn. The craziest thing I've heard is that a husband told his wife that EVs are okay so long as she was prepared to deal with the nuclear radiation from the batteries in the floor!

It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   A developing story today in the UK. You know I talk about the carrot and the stick, in terms of what is needed to persuade people into EVs? We have the carrot here in the UK with £3500 off a new EV, but I also talk about the success of Norway using the stick. Hitting people with penalties to buy fossil cars. Now today in the UK there's a story about putting up tax on petrol to push people into considering alternatives. More tomorrow.   DAIMLER, GEELY CREATE 50:50 JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP SMART The Daimler-owned Smart brand is something which hasn't been a huge commercial success and yet they've kept investing in it, and more recently, electrifying it. Most famous for making small cars it is being given a new lease of life. "Daimler is willing to give the brand another shot by teaming up with Lotus and Volvo owner Geely to transform Smart into a pure EV brand. Announced today, the deal involving Daimler and Geely represents a 50:50 joint venture in China where a new factory will be built to handle production of zero-emissions models." Says Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com today: "These future cars will be styled by Mercedes and engineered by Geely, with the first models scheduled to hit the market globally from 2022. Interestingly, aside from ditching combustion engines altogether, the Smart brand will expand into the B-segment, which means the next decade will bring us subcompact cars from a brand exclusively known for its cutesy A-segment cars." Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “For more than 2.2 million customers, smart represents a pioneer in urban mobility. Based on this success story, we look forward to further enhancing the brand with Geely Holding, a strong partner in the electric vehicle segment. We will jointly design and develop the next generation of smart electric cars that combine high-quality production and known safety standards for sale both in China and globally."   https://www.motor1.com/news/315724/daimler-geely-joint-venture-smart/   BMW WILL BUILD MINI ELECTRIC IN UK DESPITE BREXIT CONCERNS "Despite a number of carmakers saying that they’ll pull out of Britain when Brexit eventually happens BMW is pushing ahead with plans to produce the all-electric Mini over here. According to Automotive News Europe, BMW isn’t planning to implement any major changes to any of its plans in the UK – including the Oxford factory which is earmarked for electric Mini assembly." reports InsideEVs.com today: "The manufacturer is anticipating zero to five percent tariffs on goods if Britain leaves the EU without a deal, something that “won’t change Mini’s business model”. However, BMW’s chief executive officer Harald Krueger has warned that BMW could still move production to countries like the Netherlands at some point in the future should problems arise further down the line. The first electric Mini has been slated to begin production this year, and will become available worldwide, including the US where there is a possibility the brand could become electric-only in the coming years in a bid to boost sales."   https://insideevs.com/bmw-build-mini-electric-uk/   SMOKING BMW I8 DUMPED IN WATER BY FIREFIGHTERS A tweet from the Fire Department in the Netherlands: "This morning an electric car started to smoke in a showroom. The employees of the garage and the fire brigade acted quickly to drive the car outside. Because it is an electric car, inventive action was necessary. The car is immersed in a container of water because extinguishing it in the 'normal' way is difficult with these cars. The car will remain in the water basin for the next 24 hours." Chris Bruce at Motor1 raises a good point though: "What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. Plus, if the BMW were already in flames, picking it up and placing the coupe into container doesn't seem safe. Romain Dumas (F) will be back at the wheel of the 500-kW electric sports car for the “China Challenge” on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road – a unique stretch of tarmac, featuring 99 corners, which winds its way up Tianmen Mountain, located roughly 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing. As no official record exists for the eleven-kilometre mountain road, which is not accessible to public transport, Volkswagen China will run a competition prior to the record attempt, in which participants can set their own virtual time on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road. Dumas will then attempt to better the time of the fastest participant under real conditions in September. The Volkswagen ID. R, with which Romain Dumas set records at two famous hill climbs in June 2018 – first at the “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb” and then at the “Goodwood Festival of Speed” – is powered by two electric engines generating a total output of 500 kW (680 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.25 seconds. Before travelling to China in September, Dumas and the record-breaking ID. R will first set their sights on a new lap record for electric cars on the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife.   FIRST MERCEDES-BENZ ECITARO STARTS SERVICE IN BERLIN "Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has received the first out of 15 ordered all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses." reports InsideEVs.com: "The other thing is that Mercedes-Benz eCitaro currently is equipped with batteries of 243 kWh, which is enough only for 150 km (93 miles)." It's good news, but here's the context: Last autumn, BVG placed an order for up to 950 low-emission Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses. It is the largest single order ever for Europe’s best-selling city bus. At almost the same time, BVG also ordered 15 fully-electric eCitaro buses.   https://insideevs.com/mercedes-benz-ecitaro-berlin/   TESLA'S MUSK POKES FUN AT RAM TRUCKS 'PUNY' TOWING ABILITY Dodge Ram Owner @RamLover69 You would still be physically fatigued if you tried to haul 12,000 lbs of steel beams like I do every day with my Dodge Ram, 2019s motor trend truck of the year.   @elonmusk 12,000 lbs!? Furthermore, the CUPRA Leon and the CUPRA Formentor will also have a plug-in hybrid variant. SEAT President Luca de Meo also announced today at the company’s annual media conference that the CUPRA Formentor, the new CUV that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, will be built at the Martorell factory. For the first time in the history of the company, SEAT will develop a new vehicle platform in collaboration with the Volkswagen brand, a smaller version of the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) on which multiple vehicles of the size of around four metres in length by different brands, SEAT among them, will be made. The goal of the new platform is to develop affordable electric vehicles, with an entry level price below 20,000 euros. More than 300 highly skilled engineers will be participating in this project in Spain.   https://www.seat-mediacenter.com/newspage/allnews/company/2019/SEAT-will-launch-six-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-models-and-develop-a-new-platform-in-Spain-for-electric-vehicles.html   GAC AION S IS EQUIPPED WITH 58.8 KWH CATL NCM 811 BATTERY "The GAC New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. (GAC NE), the newest arm of GAC, recently announced specifications for the upcoming Aion S all-electric sedan, scheduled for market launch in China in May 2019." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The car, which was by GAC compared to the Tesla Model 3, is equipped with the latest NCM 811 battery cells supplied by CATL. The total capacity is 58.8 kWh, which should be enough for 510 km (317 miles) under NEDC. In the real world, we would expect more than 350 km (218 miles) of range."   https://insideevs.com/gac-aion-s-58-8-kwh-catl-ncm-811-battery/   RENAULT SEEKS MERGER WITH NISSAN AND FCA Partnerships among the world’s automakers appear to be increasing, be it a win-win collaboration on technology or a full-blown merger. The latest report from Automotive News Europe suggests the latter, this time between Renault and Nissan that would eventually include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as well. The information comes from a report in Financial Times (subscription required) that cites anonymous sources allegedly in the know about the deal on both sides of the fence." according to Motor1.com: "During the tenure of FCA’s former boss Sergio Marchionne, there were more than a few rumors regarding mergers and purchases, primarily with Chinese automakers. This new report speaks of a freshly merged Renault-Nissan company seeking to acquire FCA as well, ultimately creating a large corporation with enough clout to compete with the likes of Toyota and Volkswagen. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 25th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R SETS NEW OVERALL PIKES PEAK RECORD CNET: "Today the electric Volkswagen I.D. R racer beat set a new overall Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record, racing up to 14,115 feet in a stunningly quick 7:57.148. The previous overall record of 8:13.878 was set in 2013. For its re-entry into Pikes Peak, Volkswagen built a prototype EV with 680 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. A 43-kWh battery feeds juice to the all-wheel drive monster, with an electric motor on each axle that can propel it to 62 mph in 2.25 seconds. Total weight on this bad boy is less than 2,425 pounds, including driver Romain Dumas." One of the benefits of EV power is they don't lose power at altitude like a combustion engine does. “I had some fog and it was quite humid with some damp in the second section,” Dumas said from the 14,115ft summit of Pikes Peak. “I’m happy with this, but we could have gone quicker if that middle sector had been dry.”   VW COULD DOUBLE EV RANGE WITH SOLID STATE com "VW has just announced a joint venture with California-based technology company QuantumScape Corporation to develop new solid-state battery technology for use in future EV models." They'll be investing $100m in SolidScape which was founded 8 years ago and have racked up 200 patents and applications for solid state tech. Axel Heinrich, Head of VW Group Research, said “We want to accelerate the commercialization of QuantumScape’s solid-state batteries. And we combine forces to leverage Volkswagen’s experience as a production specialist and QuantumScape technology leadership. Volkswagen is thus taking another step toward a sustainable, zero emission mobility for our customers in the future.”   TESLA WILL CHARGE FOR 'PREMIUM' INTERNET ON NEW CARS STARTING JULY 1ST Engadget: "Electrek has obtained a sales team email indicating that Tesla is launching a paid Premium Connectivity package for cars ordered on or after July 1st. There will still be no-extra-charge (Standard Connectivity) cell access, according to the email -- you'll just have to pay to get features that current owners take for granted. You'll still get navigation (with traffic-based routing) over cellular as well as live Supercharger usage info and safety-related car updates. Anything that's essential to the experience and doesn't consume too much data will remain free." Read Engadget or Electrek for more. For those who can afford Tesla, the rumours $100/year is not a big deal. The issue is scale.   I-PACE DESIGNER IN BRITISH GQ MAGAZINE Jaguar’s director of design, Ian Callum, explains why the power of innovation is now a matter of millimetres Ian Callum in British GQ this month: "Now we’re getting into the era of electric cars. Some designers want to maintain the traditional profile because that’s what people are familiar with, but I believe there’s a real opportunity here to create something that’s totally different. We haven’t seen enough electric cars yet to know whether the form will change that much. In many ways, what’s underneath [the batteries and ancillaries] is more predetermined than ever, but less so in terms of what’s on top. With the I-Pace, I was determined to throw the visual elements forward rather than leaning it back, so it looks more like a mid-engined car. It certainly spells out that it’s a different kind of car, and not in a contrived way. Packaging the electrical powertrain gives you freedom, but it means the whole car needs to be lifted up. Which goes against the essence of what a Jaguar is." "That’s why the I-Pace was a “crossover”, so we could deal with that. Does the saloon car in its current form have a future, for physical and social reasons? It’s a big question. We believe it does. It’s better for aerodynamics and we’ll find a way of maintaining that form without having to lift the car up in the air. We’re under pressure to make everything taller, to accommodate the batteries under the floor."   STOCKPILING MODEL 3'S Why would Tesla stockpile so many thousands of cars? I'll let Wade from InSideEV's explain: "Will the 200,000th Tesla be delivered in June or July? People are divided on what they expect to happen. But I think it is almost universal that everyone wants Tesla to delay until the 3rd quarter. If they do so, the full $7500 tax credit will be available until the end of December. If the 200,000 limit is hit in June, the full credit will only be available through September." We'll find out Q2 numbers in just over a week.   E-CARS’ STUNT SHOW AMAZES SPECTATORS AT FAMOUS CHINESE LAKE "A stunt show of electric vehicles (EVs), as part of the six-day China EV Rally 2018, Qinghai Lake, in northwest China's Qinghai Province, thrilled the audience around China’s largest lake on Sunday. The rally features only electric cars, and is also the world's highest-altitude "E-car competition. Themed on green and low-carbon traveling, it also showcases abundant new energy resources, as well as the beautiful natural landscapes and ecological environment of Qinghai. With this year’s theme entitled “EV-Led New Era,” about 50 cars took part in the event. Celebrities and sports champions lent their support on site" saTS cgtb: "Participants are required to demonstrate the performance limits of their EVs via various stunts, including suspension – moving with two wheels on the ground, flexibility – forward-reverse serpentine and so forth."   NEW WORDS ENTERING THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY The Oxford English Dictionary is the ultimate catalog of the English language, containing detailed information about the history, pronunciation and meaning of more than 855,000 words. Last week, the editors of the multivolume dictionary announced some new words that will be included in the latest edition" according to NewsOK.com: "Zero emission" and "zero carbon," which relate to pollutants."   You can listen to all previous 160 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Hello and welcome to the Friday 15th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   TESLA MODEL 3 SHOWS OFF ITS SPEED IN EXHILARATING SALT FLATS RUN Tesla Model 3 on Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. One of the most awesome experiences had in my Trinity! #Tesla @Tesla @elonmusk #Model3 @Model3Owners Michael Striker (@Michael7Striker) "Model 3’s batteries were not even fully charged when he conducted his high-speed run, and the vehicle was entirely stock with 18″ Aero Wheels" according to Teslarati: "According to Striker, however, he opted to pull back on the throttle when he reached 90 mph. The Model 3 Performance, according to Elon Musk, would be 15% faster than the BMW M3 on the track, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Tesla expects to start manufacturing the Model 3 Performance starting this July."   ALL-ELECTRIC, 680-HORSEPOWER VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R TEST AT PIKES PEAK In the wee hours of the morning, The Drive was present for Volkswagen's onsite test of its electric Pikes Peak prototype race car. Romain Dumas is a three-time pikes peak winner and will be driving. The Drive reports: "Despite starting phase two of the day's testing on the upper half of the mountain without a full charge, Dumas maintained momentum through his first run on the upper half of the course, grappling with regenerative braking systems all the way."   13,000 PEOPLE EXPECTED TO ATTEND RENEWABLE ENERGY FAIR IN CUSTER About 13,000 people are expected to attend the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair in Custer this weekend. MREA executive director Nick Hylla: ""This is probably one of the most exciting things that's happened during my tenure here … the incredible growth in electric transportation and options that are out there. We'll have probably every variety of electric vehicle here on display, probably more than 100 vehicles."   UPS PLACES ORDER FOR 950 WORKHORSE ELECTRIC DELIVERY TRUCKS com reports: "Shipping giant UPS said it will buy 950 electric delivery trucks from Workhorse Group in what looks to be a key order for the electric vehicle startup." "This tops an earlier UPS order for 50 of the trucks that was part of a test program. Workhorse describes the vehicles as Class 5 N-Gen electric vans. UPS and Workhorse collaborated on the design of the zero-emissions vehicle." says Trucks. "With 60-kilowatt-hour battery packs the N-Gen vans can travel up to 100 miles before they need to be recharged. The cost will be about $6 to travel 100 miles, which is significantly lower than the expense of fuel to run gas or diesel-powered trucks. The all-electric delivery vehicles will cost about the same as conventional trucks but will have a lower operational cost over their expected life because they will be less expensive to maintain, Hughes said. UPS would save about $170,000 a van compared with a similar diesel delivery truck if it kept the Workhorse vehicles for 20 years, their expected lifespan"   POWER UTILITIES TO EARN $11 BILLION IN REVENUE WITH EV DEMAND Occasionally newspapers or those talking down EVs will put a story out there saying we'll face meltdown the moment someone plugs in their car and tries to make a coffee. Not only are most grid operators saying it's not an issue, a new report says they have a vested interest in making it work, as power shifts from oil forecourts to the power companies. The report also recommended that in order to meet the rising demand of charging stations, governments have to quickly facilitate standardisation of charging infrastructure and incentivise R&D for advanced charging technologies.   MINI BOSS: GOING ELECTRIC IS A REAL CHALLENGE The boss of Mini says it's one of the hardest brands to switch to EV power because of it's small size. Peter Schwarzenbauer said: “Electrifying Mini is quite a challenge, chiefly because of the small footprint of the cars. “But if you look at the role of electrification in the urban environment and the desire to be local emissions-free, there is no other brand with the credentials of Mini. It should be a natural fit, and that is the direction we’re moving towards for the future. The success of the plug-in hybrid Countryman shows what can be achieved, and the full electric Mini that is coming will show another step.” Autocar report: "The BMW Group is known to be working on solid-state batteries in partnership with Toyota, with a sale date mooted to be around 2025. Both smaller and more powerful than today’s batteries, they could potentially pave the way for a range of fully electric Minis."   COULD PANASONIC TRIPLE PRODUCTION OF EV BATTERIES Whilst some car makers who are catching up are having to get their batteries from wherever they can, Tesla get all their packs from Panasonic and that's not changing for a while yet. Tesla's target is to produce 5,000 Model 3s a week by the end of June. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk recently told analysts on the company's first-quarter results call: "We think we can get the cobalt to almost nothing." Tesla batteries use the NCA or lithium, nickel, cobalt and aluminium formula, while other car manufacturers have chosen to go with lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM) compounds" according to Channel News Asia: "Worries about cobalt shortages have prompted many to seek to alter the composition of the cathode part of the NCM battery to eight parts nickel, one part cobalt and one part manganese"   ELECTRIFY AMERICA INVESTS $44 MILLION TO MAKE SACRAMENTO A 'GREEN CITY' As part of the settlement for #dieselgate, VW had to set up Electrify America, to build out a charging infrastructure and increase the adoption of EVs. And now we've just heard details of how investment in Sacramento, California, will bring a series of initiatives to the City. $44million will be spent on a 'Green City' plan. The first part of the plan is two new car sharing schemes and of course the vehicles will all be Zero Emission. By March 2019 you will be able to use Gig, an EV sharing scheme where you don't have to return the car to where you hired it from, but rather any designated parking space inside a 13-square mile area where they operate. You will be billed according to time or use or the distance travelled. CNET explains: "The other car sharing service is called Envoy, and it's a round-trip car-sharing service (more like ZipCar) where users book, then pick up and return the car to the same spot. Envoy will feature a fleet of 142 vehicles spread in pairs across 71 locations, and each vehicle will have a dedicated Level 2 EV charger." Electrify America will also be investing in 12 new electric buses to run from the University Of California. But what about EV charging for you and I? "There are plans to build out the region's electric vehicle charging infrastructure by adding 10 quick chargers capable of charging at 50-, 150- and 350-kilowatt. These charging stations will be open to the public, and part of the funding used to build them will also go to the charging infrastructure for both of the upcoming car-share programs and the electric bus service" according to CNET.   COMMUNITY     You can listen to every previous episode of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
