The iconic Dragula car, masterfully crafted by the legendary George Barris for the Munsters TV show, is a quintessential piece of hot rod and custom car history. This ghoulishly glamorous set of wheels, with its coffin-shaped body and ornate details, perfectly encapsulates the fusion of eerie aesthetics and hot rod engineering. Sporting a 350-horsepower engine, this monstrous machine could roar down the asphalt like a bat out of hell. The attention to detail, from the spider-webbed grille to the sinister spiked wheels, makes it a true marvel for enthusiasts who appreciate both the macabre and the mechanical. George Barris's Dragula is a testament to the artistry that can be found in the world of custom cars, appealing to the hearts of fans who cherish both the spooky and the speed.  Join me on my Patreon page at patreon.com/radioblivion Blow Yer Radio Up, Baby!!

On September 30th, 1955 the life of film icon James Dean was tragically cut short while he was driving his brand new Porsche 550 Spyder, which he named “Little Bastard,” to its first race in Salinas when he was involved in a near head on collision.  After the wreck, Little Bastard was declared a total loss and sent to a salvage yard. Some of its parts were used in other race cars and the body was toured around the US until 1960 when it disappeared. Over the years rumors of a “curse” began to circulate due to the tragedies and strange events, including one verified death, that seemed to follow the wreckage of Little Bastard, though most claims continue to be unverified. Come explore what Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars original trilogy), the death of racing enthusiast Troy Lee McHenry, the 1966 Batmobile designer George Barris, NASCAR statistics, and an innocuous fire in Fresno have to do with the history surrounding the death of James Dean and the alleged “curse” of Little Bastard.

On the Freuds, films, and psychoanalysis in the life of Marilyn Monroe. In this episode we are talking all about psychoanalysis. What is it, where it came from, and how it directly contributed to Marilyn Monroe's decline and unfortunate suicide. If you like our content please subscribe to our premium episodes! We begin with a discussion of Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis, and its impact on the culture of the late 19th and early 20th century. Thanks to Adam Curtis for the wonderful documentaries, but in particular for this episode we mention The Century of the Self, a BBC documentary that is one of the few in mass media to examine the impact of the theories of Freud in modern culture. 1 We then cover the life of Marilyn Monroe from the time of her childhood in orphanages on through her adult fame in the post WW2 American Film industry. Marilyn is inseparable from the film business, because of her association with the "method acting" school, Actors Studio, founded by Lee Strasburg with funding in large part provided by Marilyn. Sadly Strasburg's method was fundamentally incompatible with Marilyn personally, since it teaches people to draw on their past experiences to summon emotion for the camera, but Marilyn's past was mostly traumatic and only led to her continued psychiatric decline. 2 We also discuss Marilyn's relationships with Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, and the conspiracy theories surrounding her affairs with Bobby Kennedy and John F. Kennedy. DiMaggio seemed to be her only reliable friend at times and Miller an unfortunate marriage of professional considerations that didn't work out. The irony of Arthur Miller relegating his wife to a secondary role in a movie starring her, coming from the author of Death of a Salesman, cannot possibly be overstated. Last but not least we cover in detail Marilyn's mistreatment at the hands of her psychiatrists, all of which were proteges of the Freuds, Anna in particular. Sadly Marilyn was not the only notable celebrity to die in the care of a Freud, Tiffany and Co. heiress Mabbie Burlingham died due to sucide in the care of Anna Freud as well. In Marylin's case she was most mistreated by Drs Marianne Kris in New York, who convinced Marilyn to commit herself to the Payne Whitney Mental Hospital in Manhattan (incidentally also the site of MKUltra experiments) where she was sexually assaulted by a staff physician, and by Ralph Greenson her psychoanalyst in Los Angeles who employed the bizarre technique of "adoption therapy" in which he convinced Marilyn to live in his house and pretend to be one of his family. We also talk a bit about Freud's bizarre first trip to America after World War I. 3, 4 As a book recommendation for this episode, we recommend Gloria Steinem's "Marilyn: Norma Jeane" as the most relevant to the subject matter we are discussing. It is not only a deeper dive into the same stories but includes iconic photos of Marilyn taken by the late, great celebrity photographer George Barris, who took the last picture of Marilyn before she died. 5 1. My first “professional” job in California was associate editor for Chrysler Power magazine, which led to more freelance writing for magazine titles like Mopar Action, Drag Racing Monthly, Popular Mechanics New Car Buyers Guide, Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, and Scale Auto Enthusiast. These writing gigs were exciting and really got me thinking about becoming a full time staff member on a big title like Hot Rod or Car Craft. I also worked as a machinist at Eric Hansen's Stage V Engineering in Walnut, CA. If you don't know, Stage V Engineering produces a wide range of products for the 426 Hemi engine family. Ranging from complete cast aluminum Hemi cylinder heads to ultra-duty roller rocker arms to freshly-designed intake manifolds, it was a great experience to be part of the Stage V family for three years. In the late summer of 1997 I got a phone call that would literally change my life. It was Ro McGonegal, then the editor of Hot Rod magazine. He wanted to know if I was interested in coming to work for him as Technical Editor. He'd seen some of my published writings and wanted me to join the staff. I must say, trying to remain calm and collected during the interview process was a real test of my acting skills! In the end, I spent the next 7 years aboard the fantastic, glorious ship that is Hot Rod magazine.During the next 7 years, I had the honor of working in the hallowed Petersen Publishing building at 6420 Wilshire Blvd. with guys like Ro McGonegal, Gray Baskerville, Jeff Koch, Terry McGean, John Dianna, Drew Hardin, David Freiburger, Matt King, Doug Glad, Jeff Smith, Matt Stone, Henry De Los Santos, Steve Campbell, Steve Temple, Rob Kinnan and many other professional writers – many of whom I'd been reading since youth. On the other side of the pages, I formed ties within GM, Ford and Chrysler and was granted access to their inner sanctums as part of numerous magazine articles devoted to Detroit high performance engineering. I was also thrilled to have worked with racing and customizing icons like Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins, Ronnie Sox, Jake King, Buddy Martin, Dick Landy, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Richard Petty, George Barris, Linda Vaughn, Richard Schroeder, Art Carr, Don Nicholson, Troy Trepanier and many others.Another thing that happened during my time at Hot Rod was the opportunity to appear on Hot Rod Magazine TV, which was then produced by WATV and (as it does today) aired on SPEED TV. This is where I got my first exposure to regular TV work and was able to put some of my training to work. Though there was no extra pay for my efforts (as Tech Editor at Hot Rod I was a salaried employee), the experience was awesome. Quickly we discovered that viewers loved itany time we took the camera into one of the many self-serve automotive boneyards in Southern California. Before long, I hosted over a dozen of these so-called “Junkyard Crawls” and ratings spiked whenever one was included in an episode.By 2005 I had been on staff at Hot Rod for 7 years, that's longer than most Tech Editors – the constant pressure of meeting monthly deadlines has a way of chewing you up. Also, my interests were moving toward doing more TV work and less magazine writing. So I resigned and quickly got a number of jobs hosting automotive TV programming. Maybe you saw me on Classic Car Restoration on the DIY Network, Off Road Adventures on the Outdoor Channel, Rides Reunited on the History Channel as well as some commercials and promotional bits on SPEED TV.

The Mecum October Takeover is in full swing with two live auctions in the books and the third on the horizon. There's lots to discuss about the recent Chattanooga auction, but before diving in, On the Move hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman have quite a bit of car news to share. John gives his full report from the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, where he learned the ins and outs of piloting the C8 Corvette and was able to push the car to near its limits. Meanwhile, Matt also has impressions to share on the Chattanooga Motorcar Festival, which took place in concert with Mecum's auction. Both Matt and John were nearly shocked by a Toyota SR5 truck that crossed the block and brought more than six figures. The pair go into the details, pulling out the pop culture reference that helped it bring top dollar. From there, it's on to discussion of Ford's tease of the upcoming off-road focused Bronco Everglades and Acura's hints of the upcoming Integra hatchback sedan. Then, John shares what he thinks will be the biggest bit of October car news: the reveal of the 2023 Corvette C8 Z06, set to debut October 26. Up next, Matt is joined by Chattanooga Motorcar Festival Concours Director Ken Gross. The three-day automotive celebration took place concurrently with the Mecum auction and featured everything from competitive racing and scenic road rallies to evening street fairs full of live music. Top automotive personalities were on-site including Ray Evernham, Linda Vaughn, Tanner Foust, Wayne Carini and Brian Redman. It all culminated in a Sunday Concours d'Elegance, the focus of Matt and Ken's discussion. Ken shares some of the behind the scenes planning and intentionality that went into producing the event, while Matt also wants to find out about the high level judging at the event and how a Ferrari 275 came to be crowned Best of Show. From there, Ken changes gears to discuss another historic vehicle he's connected with: the 1951 Bob Hirohata Mercury set to cross Mecum's Kissimmee auction block in January. Ken shares his earliest memories of the vehicle and why the custom design work that went into it decades ago by famed brothers Sam and George Barris has truly stood the test of time.

He was a true design artist himself whose groundbreaking work included the car that got away, the Space Coupe. 50 years after its disappearance it turned-up in a field and Barry Gremillion is working with a team to bring it back to life. What happened to the car, where are they now, and when can we see it? In part one of the interview with Barry we will learn more about what it takes to bring a classic origial kustom back to life and where it's headed. Then we speak with Carly Starr of the California Automobile Museum and learn about their Sunday rides, their special exhibits and one of the biggest car cruises around. The Curbside Classic Car Show podcast is released each Friday at 8am and is a fun look at the world of vintage cars through the eyes of Jim Cherry, noted author, illustrator and commentator and Tony Barthel, publisher of the Curbside Car Show Calendar at www.curbside.tv

Mike and Smitty look back at the recent passing of Hollywood Custom Car Designer Dean Jeffries. Among the many cars he designed was the Monkeemobile that was seen on the 60s TV show "The Monkees". Dean Jeffries was also a stuntman who worked in many film and TV productions. We remember his many contributions to the film and television world. We also look back at some of the many custom cars that were designed for films and movies. Along with the Monkees, such other classic shows as "The Munsters" featured a custom vehicle that is still remembered today. And in the second half of our show, we review the recent unveiling of "Shotgun Tom" Kelly's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We hear sound clips from the ceremony of April 30, 2013, including the voices of Jhani Kaye, Stevie Wonder, and of course Shotgun. Our Retro-Commercial is for Wrigley Freedent Gum from 1976.
