Earlier this year, Love Jones returned with the album, The Greatest Show on Earth, their first album since 2010, and Ben Daughtrey, Barry Thomas, and Jonathan Palmer discuss their journey to releasing the new album with Nicole Barlow and Ryan Pak on Soundtrack Your Life. They also talk about their start as a band in 1990 and how they ended up in LA, where they would meeting the likes of director John Favreau and actor Vince Vaughn. Favreau and Vaughn who were making an indie-film called Swingers. The band contributed their song "Paid for Lovin'" to the soundtrack but the band was involved with more than just that song. Bassist Barry Thomas was a music consultant on the film, helping pick out songs for the soundtrack, and the band almost ended up in the film itself, since Favreau and Vaughn were such big fans of the band. Ben, Barry, and John share behind the scenes stories about Swingers, they also chat about jamming with producer/composer Jon Brion in the early 90s, and appearing in films like Since You've Been Gone and The Sweetest Thing. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. A 57-year-old woman is enjoying retirement in the quiet Worcestershire countryside just days before Christmas 2009. After more than two decades of marriage, Melinda Palmer and her husband Jonathan have recently moved into an isolated detached house surrounded by fields and woodland in the tiny village of Wadborough. Friends and neighbours describe them as a devoted couple beginning a peaceful new chapter together. But on the evening of December 22nd, Jonathan Palmer dials 999 claiming he has returned home to find his wife brutally murdered at the bottom of the stairs after an apparent burglary gone wrong.Police arriving at Windy Ridge discover a disturbing scene. Drawers and cupboards have been pulled open, blood stains are in the hallway, and Melinda has suffered catastrophic head injuries. Yet almost immediately, detectives begin to suspect something is very wrong with Jonathan's story. Valuable jewellery has been left untouched, forensic evidence suggests the scene has been staged, and investigators soon uncover a secret life hidden behind the image of a loving husband. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the murder of Melinda Palmer and the web of lies that unravelled after her death. From Melinda's successful career with British Gas and the couple's move to rural Worcestershire, to Jonathan's secret mobile phone, online affairs, fake identities, and bizarre double life, this is a case built on deception, betrayal and greed. We explore the police investigation, the forensic evidence that pointed towards Jonathan, the staged burglary theory, the suspicious motorway journey made after the killing, and the chilling behaviour of a man attempting to pose as a grieving husband while covering his tracks. We also break down the 2010 murder trial at Worcester Crown Court, where prosecutors alleged Melinda discovered her husband's affairs shortly before he launched a violent attack that left her dead inside the home they had planned to grow old together in. From bloodstained fingerprints and missing clothing, to secret text messages, hidden relationships and the devastating impact on Melinda's family, this is a heartbreaking true crime story about a woman murdered by the person she trusted most, and the lies that finally caught up with him.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. "We are a group of analysts working in the greater context of the analytic world, but as a group, we have a profound analytic group process that's evolved and in profoundly successful ways - we've become a group that contains one another, and deals with great difficulties. Mel has given a taste of where we go to an emotional authenticity that's very compelling… Somehow, we've gotten to a place where nobody seems to be hungry in the group. You're not hungry for affirmation or support, so that there isn't a sense that people are waiting to say something smart or do something smart or make a brilliant interpretation, and there's enough resources left over that the tendency is so powerful to look to enhance somebody else's sense of aliveness and creativity." J.P.   I feel very lucky in this group, because I received a gem of a gift that was unexpected. We were going along as a group in this wonderful way. I would look forward to speaking with everybody every four weeks. We got a lot of work done. We also became part of each other's lives in our own way. However, there was always reality around us that we had to cope with. And suddenly, last year, I had a catastrophic medical event in which I had routine surgery that went extremely well, and when I went to leave the hospital, I had a cardiac arrest, and then basically six weeks of ICU care, and lived because I was in a hospital. But it is this group that then took on even more of a meaning for me, because I felt the presence of everyone near me in this group always, and it did give me the sense that the group had also morphed into its own living, breathing entity that really kind of enveloped me at a very painful time. I realized we could go back and forth as a group, actually quite easily, between clinical work, psychoanalytic thinking, and the harsh realities of time, illness, whatever that would intrude or were surrounding us as a group. To me, this was kind of a miracle of a gift. It's been life-saving, really life-saving." P.W.   "Developing a sense of one another in how not only we talk, but who we are. That friends are people I feel I can be fully open with and not have to worry about it, to feel free and even when I say things that I might question or regret or feel self- conscious or embarrassed about with friends -  it's held, and I feel this has happened in this group, that there is a way in which we very tenderly hold one another, and there's something about that space, perhaps it's an analytic space. I feel we do it with our patients, but I feel with our peers. It's a very precious thing indeed." M.M.   Episode Description: This episode of the podcast takes a step back from our usual focus on how an analytic mindset can improve the lives of those in our care - either on or off the couch. Today, we consider how we can and do care for ourselves and each other. We are a group of six analysts who have been meeting regularly for 10 years. We evolved from a thirty-year group originally devoted to the study of analytic writing. We now meet to share our lives and our work in what Peggy Warren calls "a living and breathing entity."  We discuss "what we need as analysts to go on with this work", how time and illness has changed us as a group, how we feel we can share ourselves without inhibiting self-consciousness, and how what Mel Bornstein calls a 'love of life' can serve as an organizing spirit for what we do. We take up how the group is embedded into a creative process, individually and together. Jon Palmer closes our meeting by noting "there's a lot of love in this room - a necessary condition for us all to grow."   Our Guests: Stephen Bernstein, Jonathan Palmer, and Peggy Warren are on the faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Melvin Bornstein is on the faculty of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. Mark Moore is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, where Harvey Schwartz is also on the faculty, and of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York. "A number of art schools in the early 60s said: “Clearly, it is the relationship of the painter to the medium that is the essence of painting - the painter must be emotionally present, and this is what we should instill in our students.” So they started to take away traditional training in art schools of representational drawing, of color theory, of figurative drawing, and what they ended up with was a generation of artists who were passionately throwing paint at canvases but unable to make art. The relationship between the fundamentals and intuition is very complicated. Nobody seemed to make the point that the great abstract expressionists  were all trained for decades in traditional art schools. That's what they came out of, and we see this in our analytic colleagues. Many of them are writing wonderfully at the moment, but they were trained as Kleinians or trained as ego psychologists, and they have that in their bone marrow. The kind of representational work with Apple [painting of his dog] that I am talking about when I say: I draw and I draw and I draw until I can put that aside, in analytic work I go to something basic in my training. For me it happens to be something that's close to Paul Gray, it's not where I'm going to stop, but I can use Paul Gray because that's what I was trained in - I will look for transference, I'll look for defense, I'll look for resistance and I'll go back and look for the derivatives of certain affects that are enacted in the relationship. I go over it and over it until I can relinquish it like I did with the painting of Apple, and then the intuitive comes in, but the intuitive is the reward at the end of decades of hard work."   Episode Description: We begin with Jon's mother's encouragement to paint by finding the bird's vitality through "becoming the bird." This leads us to consider the relationship between intuitive seeing and the "images which I might desire to produce." We discuss his notion of the aesthetic matrix which applies both to the analytic encounter as it does to the painter's relationship to his creative process. Jon shares with us his conviction that basic technique, whether artistic or analytic, must first become part of one's inner make-up before intuition can enlighten an obscure moment. He walks us through his creative process in the face of a blank canvas on the wall in front of him. He discusses the different uses of watercolor and oil paint and how their unique properties parallel his spontaneous engagement at various periods of an analysis. He presents a clinical encounter and how he was able to unpack a countertransference impasse through working on a painting. He closes with sharing an experience he had in his native South Africa which leads him to feel that "it's a blessing to be able to work in America."   Linked Paper and Websites: The Aesthetic Matrix: A Conversation Between a Painter and a Psychoanalyst
