Rob Dyson is a New York based businessman and retired professional racing driver with a long association with Watkins Glen International and the International Motor Racing Research Center. Following completion of his licensing school at Watkins Glen in 1974, Dyson began competing in amateur SCCA competition. In 1981 he won the Sports Car Club of America's GT2 national championship. Dyson began racing professionally in IMSA GTO and the SCCA Trans-Am Series in 1982. The following year, to support his professional racing efforts, Dyson founded the Dyson Racing Team, which over the next few years grew to be one of America's premier sports car racing teams. From it base in Poughkeepsie, over the course of nearly four decades the team won 19 championships, 72 race victories, started 72 times from the pole and achieved 224 podium finishes. Among the team's notable accomplishments is a pair of overall victories in America's premier endurance race, the Rolex 24, at Daytona International Speedway. The team fielded cars during the heyday of the IMSA Camel GT, winning its first time out with a Porsche 962 at Lime Rock Park. Under Dyson's leadership the team went on to successfully field entries in Indy car, the World Sports Car Championship, the United States Road Racing Championship, the American Le Mans Series (where the team scored two championships), the Rolex Sports Car Series, and the Pirelli World Challenge, where the team scored Bentley's first-ever North American race victory. During his 21 seasons as a professional racing driver Dyson drove in 92 races, scoring four overall race wins (including the 1997 Rolex 24 at Daytona) and a total of 18 podium finishes. Dyson continued to compete episodically in professional racing through 2007 and today remains active driving his collection of vintage Indy cars in a variety of demonstration events. Dyson's personal historic Indy car collection ranges from a 1913 Isotta Fraschini tipo IM to Johnny Rutherford's 1978 Budweiser McLaren M24B, and includes the 1961 Kimberly Cooper Climax, the first successful rear-engine car to compete in the 500. Named chairman of the board of directors of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 2021 following a decade as a member of the board, Dyson is guiding the institution through its $89 million transformational renovation as it charts its future path as the repository of the history and related artifacts of America's oldest active and most storied racing facility. In 2011 Dyson donated to the IMRRC the historic archives of National Speed Sport News, America's premier motorsports news publication since the late 1930s. Dyson is the chairman and chief executive officer of Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation, a privately-owned international holding company. GHIT 0313: Track Day Recap from our HPDE Event with NASA Northeast at NJMP's Lightning Track Jennifer and Vicki had their first trip the track this year at the NASA Northeast HPDE event at NJMP's Lightning track. Our event prep had a few issues with our Honda Civic inaugural shake down. The issue is still TBD at this point. Jennifer was in the HPDE 2 group and Vicki was in the HPDE3/4 group. Bill was primarily concerned with instructing two students this weekend, both we on a track for their maiden voyage. The weekend was a mix of highs and lows, many highs and really only one low. We go over our weekend and how everyone progressed. Both Jennifer and Vicki improved significantly over the winter off season, and we go into several of their accomplishments and the details. The post race weekend hangover is real, and we all tried to stay focused and coherent with varied results, lol. Our next event is later this month at Lime Rock Park and then our back-to-back racing weekends at PittRace with AER and then the 24 Hours of Lemons. We also cover some of the trickier aspects of growing as a driver and some of the precautions to be aware of, especially if you have a significant improvement on your speed.

We initially met Elizabeth Jolly at our second ever race at the 2018 24 Hours of Lemons race in Thompson CT. We then listened to her on the first few Shifting Points podcast. Then we met her at our recent skid pad and autocross event at Lime Rock Park with the SCDA group. It was at this point, we realized that these three ladies were all the same person. We could say we were overwhelmed at our second race; we could also say that we didn't recognize her since she was in her “Flo” costume, but it was great to meet her in person for the second time. On this episode, we catch up with Elizabeth on her thoughts about the SCDA event, her new E30 race car and then we talk through how to learn to work on a car from a starting point of near zero skills, experience, and tools. Both Elizabeth and Vicki have both progressed far in the past few years and maybe someday Bill will as well. Lol. On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, we go into Ben’s extensive karting experience and discuss the various types of karts and kart racing available. Karting can definitely help your driving and racing, most things translate, and it is a great way to practice for relatively low cost. We do try to go into the parts of karting that translate and what doesn’t translate directly due to the difference in car geometry and suspension. While Ben is pulled away for his daddy duties, we take a slight detour into cake baking and decorating from our resident cake decorating expert, Miss Jen. Our first ever partial WOOT DwD episode. Even Ben came to the table with a Coca Cola cake, recipe tbd, lol. You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. They are a great system and truly invaluable in safely increasing your speed on track and/or autocross etc. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Bill herds/hosts this episode. Vicki and Jen, as always, are so excited to have a fellow lady racing driver. 2) Elizabeth races autocross and endurance racing and almost all other forms of driving she can try. She started with a quick purchase of a 944 that then several other soon to be race cars. Her latest purchase is her new BMW E30 prepped race car. It even has a bit of history and we are sure Elizabeth will add to it as well. 3) Elizabeth and Jen commiserate about the wonderful weather at their first Lemons event. It was a downpour and the humidity hit a point where nearly all glass surfaces fogged making visibility even worse. We then go into the importance of seating position and the effect it can have on the driver’s ability to see as well. 4) Bill starts a plan. Nothing good can come of this. It's looking like a girls race weekend is upcoming. Bill is bringing palm fronds and a butler outfit for the ladies. 5) The discussion on beginning to learn about working on cars from scratch begins around 28:30 or so. Some great information that should help others go from garage zero to Garage Hero. See what we did there, lol. It was too easy to resist. 6) To the surprise of no one, Vicki relates the car to her past arts and crafts projects. The analogy does hold some merit from a material perspective. Elizabeth has even gone into the area of the electrical system and wiring of her 944’s. 7) The ladies provide a ton of tips and tricks that they have learned along the way. Some are very basic, but each one has been found to help us out. 8) Two words: parts car. (Does this mean Bill can buy another car? Sounds like it to him.) 9) Jen and Bill are next in line on learning to work on the race cars. 10) Vicki almost blows the super secret theme that we were working on and debuted at the Lemons race last weekend at PittRace. Photos 11) We then go into the favorite tools and tool highlights that Elizabeth and Vicki have at this point.

Our 2021 season started off with another skid pad and autocross event at Lime Rock Park. This time the event was held by the SCDA. We go into our goals for the event, how we did, and hopefully a long list of what we learned. The weather was great and more than we could have asked for this early in the season. In addition to a great event with tons of track time, we also met Elizabeth Jolly and her new to her E30 BMW 3 series race car. Actually, it was for the second time, as we had met at our teams second ever race in 2018 at the 24 Hours of Lemons race in Thompson Connecticut. Both Vicki and Jennifer were finally able to feel the pause in the CPR “Correct, Pause, and Recover” process of catching a car. On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, we go into the speed at which you will use your hands. Typically, karters and autocross drivers are trained to move their hands much more quickly than a track driver, but there are times where fast hands are preferred. There is a good discussion of the times where you need to move your hands more quickly and times when a more slow and predictable hand movement is optimal. We also digress into a gumball machine discussion for a bit. It was a late night of recording, lol. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) We start with a summary of the team’s goals going into the event and a summary of what the event would entail. 2) The cars that we brought with us were a 1999 NB Miata with a Flyin’ Miata turbo for Vicki. Jennifer was driving in a stock 2019 ND Miata with DOT 4 brake fluid, but otherwise stock. Bill drove a similarly prepped 2017 Toyota 86. Both Vicki and Bill were on our endurance racing tires of choice the Hankook RS4’s. 3) It was too early in the season for Lime Rock to open the sprinkler system for the skid pad so most of the day we drove on a dry skid pad. Jennifer and Vicki were able to get a few sessions on the skid pad with it wet. 4) We go into how we met Elizabeth and then proceeded to switch her into our race group and spent most of the day talking and driving with her. Her new to her E30 race car was awesome and she loved it from her first time behind the wheel on the skid pad, as everyone could tell on our Instagram interview with her, lol. 5) Jennifer’s stomach has an issue with the LRP autocross course, but it was obvious she had improved from our last visit in October. 6) We discuss our first time driving on a dry skid pad and how it went with a partially wet/partially dry surface. 7) How we did versus our goals and what we learned. We could tell you here, but what fun would that be. 8) Vicki wins this weekend’s GHiT award for being the most consistent on the autocross course as her best times differed by only 0.01 seconds. 9) To quote Vicki “I didn’t give two squats about the line”. Bill’s response “I could tell”, lol. 10) Bill was actually faster in the ND Miata that he was in the Toyota 86 while on the stock OEM continental tires. Bill also set his personal best ever Apex Score for several of the laps. 11) We ended our visit with a drive by stop at Don Pepe’s pizza. Its “on the way” home and a great stop if you are in the area.
In this week’s episode of Speed Secrets Podcast, Matt Romanowski (driver, instructor, coach, and data guru) joins me to dive into all things data and data systems! Specifically we dive into focusing on the speed channel, looking for lack of throttle, and braking issues. We also discuss off-season prep – what drivers can do to help them best prepare getting back on the track! Matt’s Speed Secret: Visualize – practice visualization in all areas of your life. Matt Romanowski participated in his first track event when he was 18 years old at Lime Rock Park, Matt was hooked. Through crewing on a SCCA Formula Continental to supporting championship efforts in various categories from SCCA Regionals to Pro Racing, racing data has been at the center of motorsport for Matt. From the early AiM Sports Mychron 3 systems to the latest MXP dash loggers, SmartyCam videos, Power Distribution Modules (PDM’s) and everything in between, racing data has been what he does. Matt has worked hard to build www.TrailBrake.com to be the center for AiM Sports Sales, Support, and Coaching where his customers have won SCCA, NASA, Pro Racing, and other championships.
Ross Bentley, world class racing coach and author, was kind enough to join us to help celebrate our 150th episode! Since Ross has literally written THE book on racing and high performance driving, we always look forward to talking with him any chance we get. Our team has improved in the almost year since Ross came on episode 100, but have our questions? You will have to be the judge of that. As always, Ross is able to answer everything we are curious about and even provide some insight into the area that we had not even thought of to this point. If you want an episode that will help you drive faster, Ross is the perfect guest. We have already started our new list of questions in case we can talk him into episode 200. If you have any, please let us know. Also, Ross has resumed his weekly podcast and if anything, it is better than ever. You can subscribe to it on any of the podcasting platform of your choice. Also, his book Speed Secrets is the most essential resource we know of to learn to be a better driver and race driver. The great thing about Ross is he can answer every single question we can think of. The bad thing about Ross is he makes you think about it in another way. This ends up with many more questions and usually Bill goes off and overthinks it, again. Vicki missed a really good one this time (she was fixing her broken MX5 suspension in the hotel parking lot. How to get better at the turns is the (potentially) surprising subject of this Dominating with Dawson, but we attempt to discuss how to approach a fast corner and a slow corner. Depending in the specific track, one or two of the turns will be most critical to a fast lap time and it can often be one of these two types of corners. This will be the first part of this area that we discuss as there is a lot of detail and discussion to be had in this area. We did use several specific turns at Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Monte Carlo, and Mid-Ohio to describe these types of turns explicitly. We are also sure, Ben slipped in a VIR reference at least once or twice. For this discussion, the term fast is usually referring to a turn with a minimum speed of over ~60 mph or ~100 kph. We hope you enjoy this episode! Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Ross quickly gives away why he is back on the podcast with us. Lol. 2) We talk with Ross about our (then) upcoming skid pad event at Lime Rock Park and he was kind enough to go into what we could do to maximize the learning at the skid pad. It turned out that this was almost exactly what our friends at Safety Third Motorsports had already arranged for the event. Even after the event, we still have a long way to go to be able to catch up to Ross’s friend Johan Schwartz who was able to hold a drift for 232.5 miles, with live refueling while drifting. 3) Ross goes on to explain a way to have a car turn more when understeering by reducing the steering input you are asking from the car. Its counterintuitive but exceedingly helpful. 4) How does practicing on a skid pad help your street driving, as well as your driving on a track. 5) When to use slow hands and when to use quick hands. 6) Bill even asked the questions that he is over thinking, again. Things like is there a relationship between the apex and the resumption of throttle during a turn. Bill’s pursuit of foundational axioms continues, lol. And why is he talking about thermodynamics on a podcast about racing? 7) A great discussion of what sometimes can fool you on track. For instance, sometimes as lap of a turn may have felt “good” but ended up slower. 8) Ben comes up with a truly new question to Ross! Nicely done. 9) The importance of focusing on what to do and not solely on what not to do, especially in racing. 10) Jennifer asks a great question: what can she do to improve during the off season? 11) Ross goes in depth on mental imagery techniques and actually gives Jennifer (and everyone) an exercise program that has shown to significantly improve your driving outside of being on track. Summary: Relax body and slow breathing to slow your mind down 11a) Monday night: entering and setting up to drive the track at speed, and push pace a bit with actually mimicking the physical movements. Focus on the technique of driving Pitt race. Refresh the same for 10-15 minutes the following morning. Mantra: Pitt Race etc. 11b) Tuesday night: Close eyes and focus on personal driving confidence improvements and then drive the track again. Follow with a Wednesday morning refresh. Mantra: Confidence or I’m here etc. (in driving) 11c) Wednesday night: focus on ultra-sensory perception and expansion of details. Follow up Thursday morning. Mantra: Sensitive 11d) Thursday night: Focus on race craft and starting scenarios and racing scenarios and try to envision ways to gain position. Repeat refresh next morning. Mantra: I’m ready or I’m going to the front 11e) Friday night: Focus on adaptability of dealing with a car that isn’t quite correct. i.e. left turns aren't same as right, you lost a gear, brakes are an issue, shock going away, etc. etc. Mantra: Adapt 11f) Saturday: Focus on a specific driving technique you are working on, like brake pedal release etc. Mantra: on the technique 11g) Sunday night: Focus on the thrill of driving at the limit and just driving without conscious thought. Mantra: TBD by you 12) Ross and his students have all found the value of the using mental imagery and seen large benefits, especially when expanding the practice beyond the physical driving as we described above. 13) We also went over several other off season, off track practice topics that anyone can do while in the off season. 14) Bill also brought up the relatively recent release of the Garmin Catalyst, how it works, and how it can help most if not all drivers at the track. It does not replace a coach, but can definitely help anyone to be faster and try new techniques on the track by looking at what you are doing and helping you to optimize from what you are doing to a better approach. Most of us would be surprised by how it can help you break a plateau. (We are still working to get a guest on the show to diver deeper into the Catalyst. We have not given up.) Ross coincidentally has helped in the development of the Catalyst and it really shows. The Catalyst even helped Ross improve his personal lap times and we are sure it will help you as well. 15) Ross covers what areas are typically key to focus on at various driving levels of proficiency. Several of the habits are similar across the driving levels, sometimes even to the highest professional ranks. 16) We go into the relative importance of driving at the limit vs driving the perfect line. It looks likes Robin for NASA Great Lakes was correct with his tip to Bill at Autobahn CC this summer. 17) A few brake light stories that Ross has “heard” about, as well as a great story about Ross driving the most “evil” car he ever drove at Nazareth. 18) Ross was even willing to entertain us with the fast and furious story time questions that we haven’t asked him already. Some will surprise you, but all were very entertaining. We were especially looking forward to Ross’s answers to his favorite corner of a track.
Skip Barber is a racing driver, racing instructor, racetrack owner, driving school founder, and all-around cool guy.
