Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity!"In this podcast episode, Anouk addresses the fear and concern that many parents have about their children using drugs. She emphasizes the importance of starting prevention and planning early, especially for emotionally intense kids who may be more at risk for problematic drug use. Anouk invites Richard Capriola, a mental health and substance abuse counselor, to share his expertise on the topic. Richard highlights the need for parents to become informed about the types of drugs available and the warning signs of substance use. He also emphasizes the importance of open and honest communication with children, starting at a young age, to build trust and address any underlying emotional issues that may lead to substance use. Richard encourages parents to seek professional assessments if they suspect their child may be using drugs, as early intervention and treatment can make a significant difference.3 Key Takeaways- Early communication and trust-building with your child can effectively mitigate the risk of substance abuse later on.- Look out for warning signs such as declining grades, changes in social behavior, and unusual odors or paraphernalia at home.- Seeking professional assessments and early intervention can lead to remarkable results in addressing substance use and underlying psychological issues in children."The most important thing that you can do is start to develop open, honest communication with your child. There are very few things more heart-wrenching for a family than having your child addicted to alcohol or drugs. The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”, says Rick Capriola. Rick joined me this year at our virtual Mental Health Summit! What he has to share…every parent needs to hear. Share this with someone you know.  In Richard Capriola's new book, “The Addicted Child” (2020) - he explains substances being used by today's adolescents and the addictions which accompany teen substance abuse, like self-harm and eating disorders. Richard Capriola has been a mental health and addictions counselor for over two decades.  If your child uses alcohol or drugs, you know how it affects your family. These substances enter your child's brain and change their behavior. You want to help your child, but where do you begin? The Addicted Child is your roadmap. Learn what makes adolescent addiction different. How drugs can change your child's brain and behaviors. The assessments and tests you should insist upon. And more. Sadly, your desperate search for help often leaves you feeling alone and without a roadmap to guide you through the process of helping your child. The Addicted Child was written for you. The percentage of teens using illicit substances dropped significantly in 2021 as the pandemic forced them into isolating from friends, classrooms and extracurricular activities. Alcohol, marijuana and nicotine vaping – the most commonly used substances by teens all showed declines from 2020. These findings were reported by a Monitoring the Future survey conducted by the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research – http://www.monitoringthefuture.org. Two issues drive teen substance use: drug availability and perception of risk. DR. MEG WITH GUEST RICHARD CAPRIOLA (Part 1)Many times, mental health and substance abuse go hand in hand. Guest Richard Capriola explains how parents are often surprised when they find out the extent of either (or both) diagnosis in their teen. They missed the warning signs because nobody told them what to look for. Richard wrote his book, “The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse” in an effort to help parents know what warning signs to look for, which assessments may be needed, what the options are for treatment, and to hopefully make parents feel more confident and less afraid of the topic of adolescent substance abuse, should they need to confront it. In this episode, Richard discusses whether some personalities are more prone to addictive behavior in children as they get older, or if every child is at risk. He sheds light on the different warning signs parents need to be looking for, as well as how to effectively deal with their teen's behavior during substance abuse treatment, without the fear of driving them away. BREAK DR. MEG WITH GUEST MAX LUCADO (Part 2)Richard Capriola and Dr. Meg continue their conversation about adolescent substance abuse, discussing which substances are most commonly being used among teens today, including a very alarming rise in vaping. Also discussed is how the COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents – while the pandemic drove down adolescent substance abuse, it caused a dramatic increase in mental health issues among teenagers, including depression, anxiety and fear. Richard also talks about the effect of marijuana on teenagers, now that this substance has been legalized in many states. FROM THE PRODUCERThanks for listening to Episode #167, Adolescent Substance Abuse, and for helping Dr. Meg's parenting revolution reach more than SEVEN MILLION downloads! "Two issues drive teen substance use: drug availability and perception of risk. Availability: Today's teens know that obtaining substances is far too easy. For example, 70 percent of high school seniors say marijuana is either “fairly easy” or “very easy” to obtain. Seventy-seven percent say getting their hands on alcohol is very easy and twenty-one percent of seniors believe it is easy to find MDMA (ecstasy). Thirty percent say getting their hands on amphetamines is also very easy. Perhaps more alarming, 27 percent of eighth-graders said getting ahold of a drug like marijuana is either fairly easy or very easy to do. And nearly 50 percent said alcohol is easy to find." Richard Capriola is a counselor and author of The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse.
