Mental health is a critical aspect of our overall well-being and should be given attention for several reasons. Our home is where we spend a significant amount of our time, and it can have a considerable impact on our mental health. Creating a supportive and nurturing environment at home can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and promote positive mental health. She is a dog lover, a knitter and crusader to normalize mental health. While Serena has worked in a variety of different roles over the years, the one that she is most proud of is that of mama to three beautiful girls. Parenting a Child with Autism | Strategies and Tips with Dr. Stephen Shore

As a child, Stephen was nonverbal and diagnosed with “atypical development and strong autistic tendencies.” Institutionalization was recommended—but rejected in favor of parent-based intensive early intervention and support. Dr. Shore's parents were probably asking the same question you are, “What causes autism?” Dr. Stephen Shore empowers autistic individuals and others in the neurodivergent community to lead fulfilling and productive lives using their strengths – just like everyone else. Making success for people on the autism spectrum and other differences the rule rather than the exception because Dr. Shore knows what autism feels like. Dr. Shore accomplishes this mission through presenting, writing and international consulting in education of and employment for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent individuals. Dr. Shore's Ted Talk, “The Superpower of Autism - What if we looked at Autism as a superpower instead of a limitation?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk9T7ngEijs Today, Shore is a clinical assistant professor at the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education at Adelphi University, teaching courses in special education and autism. His research and teaching focuses on matching best practices to the needs of people with autism. Shore is internationally renowned for his presentations, consultations and writings on lifespan issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure. His most recent book, College for Students with Disabilities, co-authored with Pavan John Antony, Ph.D., combines personal stories and research with promoting success in higher education. A current board member of Autism Speaks, president emeritus of the Asperger's Association of New England, advisory board member of Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association (AHANY) and advisory board member of the Autism Society, Shore also serves on the boards of the U.S. Autism and Asperger Association, the Scientific Counsel of OAR and other autism-related organizations. Follow Stephen at  @tumbalaika Stephen understands and appreciates each part of a bicycle, not because he's an avid rider or mechanic, but because he is on the autism spectrum. Stephen explains that having autism creates a desire to understand things, a desire to understand why things are the way they are in the simplest terms possible, a desire to understand the world so he can relate to it.   At the young age of 18-months-old, Stephen was hit with what he calls the regressive autism bomb. Doctors had little faith in his future development and recommended his parents institutionalize him. Luckily, his parents persisted and were able to have Stephen placed in a school just one year later. When Stephen first began his academic journey, he did not know how to function and communicate in a classroom setting normally. He recalls engaging in unusual behavior such as repeating the letter B over and over to classmates and preferring to read books alone in the library rather than interact with teachers. His time in school was undoubtedly a challenge, but Stephen was determined to persevere and succeed despite his autism.     And Stephen did just that. Now, Stephen is working as an agent of autism to show others that autism is not a disability, but rather something that, like bicycles, needs to be understood and appreciated for what it is. Stephen's passion is to increase awareness in others of what autism truly is and how it affects those on the spectrum. He wants to be a voice for those who cannot explain their condition, and he has done this in many ways already.  Stephen Shore truly is the agent of autism, as he has built a career around increasing education on autism. He has written several books including College for Students with Disabilities, Understanding Autism for Dummies, Ask and Tell, and Beyond the Wall. Stephen was one of the first two people with autism to serve on the board of Autism Speaks and has been invited to speak about autism in venues including TedX. The Boston University graduate has turned his passion into action his whole life and finds true happiness in simply informing people on why autism is not a disability, but the thing that shaped his whole life.   Stephen Shore's story is one of perseverance, inspiration, passion, struggle, and finally, success. Stephen has made a name for himself as the agent of autism, and the world has taken notice. Since we have no idea what the economic, political, or environmental landscape will look like when today's students graduate, we owe it to the next generation to adapt our education practices to meet their needs in facing an increasingly uncertain future. We need to stop educating children for jobs that we had. We have to do something different, something new, something revolutionary. Open Source Learning is the new wave of education.  Does your child struggle going to school? I bet he wouldn't if the school was an Open Source Learning Academy. Open Source Learning engages students in their area of interest - and they learn from those in the field doing what they are interested about, and they connect with them, wherever that individual may be in the world…and yes, they are still able to meet the common core standards.  What students said in Mr. Preston's class, “I didn't hate my life for a half hour.” Many of Dr. Preston's consulting clients and university students confided that they had to unlearn and recover from what they were taught in school in order to be successful in their careers.  In school, we're told to be quiet and keep our eyes on our own papers. The Next Wave in Education Has to Include Open Source Learning | Dr. David Preston

I bet he wouldn't if the school was an Open Source Learning Academy Open Source Learning engages students in their area of interest - and they learn from those in the field doing what they are interested about, and they connect with them, wherever that individual may be in the world…and yes, they are still able to meet the common core standards. At work, we're asked why we can't be better team players. For a long time in our country, we tolerated education's shortcomings and the disconnect between school and life after graduation. Adolescents & the Risk of Substance Abuse | Rick Capriola | Mental Health Summit

There are very few things more heart-wrenching for a family than having your child addicted to alcohol or drugs. The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”, says Rick Capriola. Rick joined me this year at our virtual Mental Health Summit! What he has to share…every parent needs to hear. Share this with someone you know.  In Richard Capriola's new book, “The Addicted Child” (2020) - he explains substances being used by today's adolescents and the addictions which accompany teen substance abuse, like self-harm and eating disorders. Richard Capriola has been a mental health and addictions counselor for over two decades.  If your child uses alcohol or drugs, you know how it affects your family. These substances enter your child's brain and change their behavior. You want to help your child, but where do you begin? The Addicted Child is your roadmap. Learn what makes adolescent addiction different. How drugs can change your child's brain and behaviors. The assessments and tests you should insist upon. And more. Sadly, your desperate search for help often leaves you feeling alone and without a roadmap to guide you through the process of helping your child. The Addicted Child was written for you. The percentage of teens using illicit substances dropped significantly in 2021 as the pandemic forced them into isolating from friends, classrooms and extracurricular activities. Alcohol, marijuana and nicotine vaping – the most commonly used substances by teens all showed declines from 2020. These findings were reported by a Monitoring the Future survey conducted by the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research – http://www.monitoringthefuture.org. Two issues drive teen substance use: drug availability and perception of risk. Have More Fun with Your Kids with Michael Rucker, Author of ”The Fun Habit”

Do you ever find yourself not laughing as much with your kids? Do you miss the fun of your younger years? My guest today is Michael Rucker, author of, “The Fun Habit” - How the Disciplined Pursuit of Joy and Wonder can Change your Life. He is also an organizational psychologist, behavioral scientist and charter member of the International Positive Psychology Association.  Learn more -  https://michaelrucker.com/ After a string of misfortune in 2016, including Mike's brother's untimely death, he began to critically evaluate modern approaches to happiness. During this journey, he had an epiphany: his pursuit of happiness was actually making him… unhappy. He realized trying to be “happy” only drew his attention to what was missing. Fixating on his lack of happiness made him label himself as unhappy, and he came to realize that the maladaptive label was bleeding into his identity. This left him with the question: If deliberately chasing happiness leaves me miserable, what's the alternative? Then, after years of research and trial and error, a second crucial insight clicked into place: We can't always make ourselves happy, but we all possess the agency to find ways to be more joyful and have more fun. Unlike happiness, fun isn't something that may or may not arise under the perfect circumstances or when all of my “if-onlys” are fulfilled. Having fun is an action anyone can take here and now practically anywhere, anytime. And if you're a cynic like he was and need to see the proof, science shows us that fun is enormously beneficial to our well-being, both physically and psychologically. So, let's have fun together. Mental Health Summit was kicked off this year with a guided meditation led by William Meyer. We brought the recording here for you. It's a great way to start your day or take a mindful moment in the middle of your day. William Meyer is the author of “Big Breath” and “Healing Breath” - Calm your worries and build your bravery — or just relax during a busy day or wind down before bed with these two picture books. All day long, you breathe — in and out, in and out — without even thinking about it. But did you know that you can play with your breath, use it to take you on an adventure? All you have to do is find a comfy spot and close your eyes. Does your breath sound like ocean waves? Like the wind before a storm or a breeze at the start of spring? Can you feel it all the way down to the tips of your toes? By the time you open your eyes, you might just feel a little lighter, calmer, more relaxed. Bill Meyer is also the author of two adventure chapter books for kids. He also published a guide for meditation in the classroom called, Three Breaths and Begin. He holds degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard and has a PhD from NYU in Education.           More about the Host - Dr. Karin Jakubowski is an elementary public school principal and certified life coach. At our Annual Mental Health Summit, Dr. Gominak shared with us how anxiety, depression, the world epidemic of sleep disorders AND MORE are due to a lack of Vitamins D and B. Imagine a world filled with people pain-free. Mental illness, anxiety, depression and psychosis is a thing of the past. Medical illness is reduced and medication use is minimized. Dr. Gominak believes this saying is a reality, “See your doctor once a year, heal your body every night.”  Dr. Gominak also says that autism is linked to insufficient deep sleep and that the global struggle with worsening sleep is linked to reduced sun exposure, says Dr. Gominak. Given back enough time in deep sleep and the necessary raw materials (D and B vitamins) the brain can make up for the deep sleep that it missed and develop normal social skills even into the teens and early 20's. Not a morning person? Dr. Gominak says that's due to your body not getting the correct sleep at night.
