Australia has recently enacted some legislation that not only makes good sense, but models steps that should be taken by the rest of the world to protect our kids from harm and to provide for their well-being. What exactly has Australia done? They've passed a new law that bans kids from using social media until they reach the age of sixteen. The new law won't go into effect for another year, but it's rooted in the growing body of evidence, both from research and anecdotally, that the use of social media and technology is harming our kids by undermining their mental health and relationships in ways that cannot go unnoticed or unaddressed. Of course, there are many details yet to be worked out before the ban goes into effect. As Christian parents, laws like these help set borders and boundaries, but ultimately we want to see our kids make these decision on their own as they flow out of heart bent towards the worship of God.

For many teens and tweens, social media is everything. It's how they connect with friends and with the broader world - but there are a lot of dangers online. How can parents keep their kids safe from things like predators and bullying on the internet? PA State Representative Brian Munroe worked with three teenagers to write a bill that just passed the House, aiming to help protect kids online. He joins us along with Dr. Desmond Upton Patton, a University of Pennsylvania professor and the director of SAFELab, a research initiative focused on how youth of color navigate violence online. And on Shara in the City, we visit one of the oldest trees in Philadelphia - a treasure that some in the Germantown neighborhood are fighting to save. For more, read Dr. Patton's Newsweek op-ed on the links between social media and gun violence. The folks at the Pew Research Center have released new data that helps us understand how and where our teens are spending their social media time. The top most-visited and popular social media site among teens is YouTube, which comes as no surprise. More than nine out of ten teens say that they engage with YouTube, with seventy-one percent of all teens saying that they engage with YouTube on a daily basis. Sixteen percent say they are on YouTube almost constantly, thirty-eight percent are on it several times and day, and seventeen percent about once a day. The next three most popular social media sites are tiktok, snapchat, and Instagram. Parents, it's no surprise that our kids are being shaped more and more by the life-lessons, perspectives, and worldview messages they encounter on social media. We need to not only limit their time, but help them learn to discern truth from error. Provide borders and boundaries for social media use, and encourage other activities.

There's no denying that social media plays a large role in the lives of today's teenagers. Studies show they're online nearly nine hours a day, and half report visiting a social media site at least daily. While social media platforms can help kids stay connected with family and friends, they can also be harmful. Now, the American Psychological Association has released new guidelines for teens' social media use.A 2019 study found adolescents who spent more than three hours a day using social media had a higher risk for mental health problems. Now, the American Psychological Association has new guidelines for parents. Experts suggest monitoring all social media use for kids ages 10-14. Experts also urge parents to consider enforcing time limits. One study found limiting screen time to about an hour a day helped anxious teens and young adults feel better about their appearance.Parents might want to disable their teen's location sharing and restrict private messaging, commenting, live-streaming, and in-app purchases. The APA says watch for signs of problematic use, like poor sleeping habits, deceptive behaviors, or an inability to carry out daily routines.Experts say it's also a good idea to talk to your teen about how to think critically when using social media. For example, parents can encourage teems to fact-check the information they come across and discuss any questions they have.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the recent decision made by the U.S. Surgeon General to release an official statement on the harm that is being done to teens through the use of social media. It is causing an alarming rise in mental health issues, with studies finding that excessive use of social media has been linked to cyberbullying, disrupted sleep cycles, reduced physical activity, body-image issues, an increase in self-harm, exposure to pornography, and increased rates of depression and anxiety. Sadly, many parents consider themselves helpless to do anything about it. Episode Links In his latest book Hybrid Church: Rethinking the Church for a Post-Christian Digital Age, Dr. White has an entire section on social media as it relates to the church, and how to think Christianly about it. Because it is clear that the church cannot remain silent about the harmful effects that social media has on our society. To help with this, Mecklenburg Community Church offers an on-demand class through the Meck Institute called “FaceTime: What Parents Need to Know About Technology, Social Media, Video Games and More.” Along with that class that is designed to serve parents, Dr. White gave a series at Mecklenburg Community Church that stresses the importance of parents being informed, involved, and in charge. Late last month, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory report on Social Media and Youth Mental Health. As expected, the report holds back a bit, being somewhat cautionary regarding making conclusions until more data is received. But the fact that the report even exists should wake us up! Listen to these introductory words from the report: Social media use by youth is nearly universal. Up to 95% of youth ages 13–17 report using a social media platform, with more than a third saying they use social media “almost constantly.” Although age 13 is commonly the required minimum age used by social media platforms in the U.S., nearly 40% of children ages 8–12 use social media. There are increasing concerns among researchers, parents and caregivers, young people, healthcare experts, and others about the impact of social media on youth mental health. The report correctly calls parents to action in terms of setting up borders and boundaries. Parents, this is your God-given responsibility.

In 2014, Elder David A. Bednar spoke to members of the church at Education Week at BYU. He talked about using social media to flood the earth with goodness. But we've seen that social media can also be harmful, especially to young people, when used carelessly. How can we teach and train the rising generation to use this powerful tool in a way that blesses them and the world? I believe it starts with the way we as parents think about it. If we think of social media as evil or destructive, we are going to be afraid of it.  And we never do our best parenting from fear. Listen in today as I offer you a new way to think about your teenager's relationship with social media.

We are in the midst of a teen mental health crisis. Since 2011, the rate of U.S. hospitalizations for preteen girls who have self-harmed is up 189 percent, and with older teen girls, it’s up 62 percent. Tragically, the numbers on suicides are similar — 151 percent higher for preteen girls, and 70 percent higher for older teen girls. NYU social psychologist Jonathan Haidt has spent the last few years trying to figure out why, working with fellow psychologist Jean Twenge, and he believes social media is to blame. Jonathan and Jean found that the mental health data show a stark contrast between Generation Z and Millennials, unlike any demographic divide researchers have seen since World War II, and the division tracks with a sharp rise in social media use. As Jonathan explains in this interview, disentangling correlation and causation is a persistent research challenge, and the debate on this topic is still in full swing. But as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and the next big thing fine-tune the manipulative and addictive features that pull teens in, we cannot afford to ignore this problem while we sit back and wait for conclusive results. When it comes to children, our standards need to be higher, and our burden of proof lower.

While our kids are often much more savvy about the latest apps, they are woefully ignorant of the ramifications of their online behavior. Deborah Owen says the most important thing parents can drive home to kids is the fact that "everything they put out there is available for everyone to see. Even if they (kids) think it's not. We tell kids that but they still don't get it!" Annie talks with Debbie about the role of parents in guiding kids in the Digital Age. About Deborah C. Owen (@DeborahCOwen) Deborah C. Owen is a former public school educator and parenting expert/coach. As the school librarian at several high schools, a middle school, and an elementary school, she saw many kids who were hurting, confused, angry, and unmotivated. She made it her mission in the library to create new kinds of projects that would inspire teenagers, that would be relevant to their daily issues, and that would instill the love of learning in their hearts and minds. Deborah is the founder of http://YouCanRaiseGreatKids.com and the author of Social Media Fascination: Embracing Social Media to Build Community, Trust, and Rapport. melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com www.blendedfamilypodcast.com   These days our children are exposed to more than they should be, and most exposure is due to social media. Teenagers spend the majority of their time with their faces buried in their phones. This is truly frustrating for parents. The choice whether to get your child that smartphone or not is yours as their parent, but you should be aware of what it entails before you make that decision. Most importantly, certain rules should be set before even giving your child that phone. We aren’t going to be able to stop social media, but at least we can gain knowledge about it in order to keep our children safe.
