Teens, Addiction and Substance Abuse-Part 1 (Episode 78) It may come as no surprise that we are living in the midst of a teenage mental health crisis. In this episode I'm joined by Richard Capriola who is a therapist, substance abuse counselor, and author of the book The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse. In this episode we talk about what often gets missed or overlooked in the assessment of teen addiction or substance abuse and how this can impact their recovery. You will also learn about what drugs teens are using today, what they have access, which substances have increased in use, and how substance abuse is correlated with the current teen mental health crisis. We also discuss the long-term impact of drugs on a teenager's brain and how adolescent substance abuse differs from adult substance abuse. You will also find out what to do if you suspect your teenager is abusing drugs or alcohol.
Richard Capriola has been a mental health and substance use counselor for over two decades. He has treated both teens and adults diagnosed with substance use disorders and he is also the author of “The Addicted Child”, a handy parental guide for adolescent substance abuse. In this episode, Richard shares advice on how you can help your teens develop healthier social media habits and how to prevent them from being addicted to their cellphones. Key Takeaways About Richard and his work with teens. What seems to be the most popular apps teens are using today? Parents might not understand all the available social media apps, but they should take the time to investigate what their teens spend a vast majority of their time on. Like anything else, there will always be downsides and parents need to be aware of what these are. You should talk to your children about their social media use and what they're posting online publicly. How do you help your teen develop healthier social media patterns? If you have a teen that's vulnerable to social anxiety, you have to be proactive with getting them to spend ‘real-life' time with their friends. Check in with your teen and ask them how social media makes them feel. Social media is often filled with unrealistic images. Does it make sense for parents to create a false or fake account to follow their teenager on? No one likes to have their privacy invaded. Honesty is always the best policy. Richard shares some research around Facebook usage. Teenagers know they have a problem, but can't seem to self-regulate their usage. You want to clearly communicate to your teen about what it looks like to be responsible with social media. Our teens are constantly watching us. Do you have a social media problem too? If you start spying on your kid, you're going to get a negative reaction. No one likes to have their privacy invaded.”

DR. MEG WITH GUEST RICHARD CAPRIOLA (Part 1)Many times, mental health and substance abuse go hand in hand. Guest Richard Capriola explains how parents are often surprised when they find out the extent of either (or both) diagnosis in their teen. They missed the warning signs because nobody told them what to look for. Richard wrote his book, “The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse” in an effort to help parents know what warning signs to look for, which assessments may be needed, what the options are for treatment, and to hopefully make parents feel more confident and less afraid of the topic of adolescent substance abuse, should they need to confront it. In this episode, Richard discusses whether some personalities are more prone to addictive behavior in children as they get older, or if every child is at risk. He sheds light on the different warning signs parents need to be looking for, as well as how to effectively deal with their teen's behavior during substance abuse treatment, without the fear of driving them away. BREAK DR. MEG WITH GUEST MAX LUCADO (Part 2)Richard Capriola and Dr. Meg continue their conversation about adolescent substance abuse, discussing which substances are most commonly being used among teens today, including a very alarming rise in vaping. Also discussed is how the COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents – while the pandemic drove down adolescent substance abuse, it caused a dramatic increase in mental health issues among teenagers, including depression, anxiety and fear. Richard also talks about the effect of marijuana on teenagers, now that this substance has been legalized in many states. Richard Capriola has been a mental health and substance use counselor for over two decades. He has treated both teen and adults diagnosed with substance use disorders including over a decade as a counselor at Menninger Clinic in Houston Texas. Richard is the author of “The Addicted Child”, a handy parental guide for adolescent substance abuse. In this episode Richard will discuss adolescent substance abuse, how the pandemic changed teen substance abuse and warning signs every parent, teacher and coach should know about. Key Takeaways How has the pandemic affected teen substance abuse? Why did drug use go down during the pandemic? Children became isolated at home. What drugs are teens using right now? Richard sees vaping on the raise among teens. Vape devices can easily be hidden, so parents and teachers might not be aware of its use. Why are teens using substances in the first place? The biggest reason cited was to help with their anxiety. We often spot the substance issue first, but we do not recognize the underlying emotional issue that the child is trying to cure or resolve. How should parents respond when their teens don't think it's a big deal? Why do people do drugs? Teens run the potential of having more risk in their brains than a fully developed brain. What are some of the warning signs that a teen is doing drugs? What's a healthy boundary when it comes to trusting your teen vs. verifying what they're saying? If you find something alarming in their room, try not to attack them. Instead, ask proactive questions. The parent also needs support. You cannot do this alone if your teen is starting to have substance abuse issues. There is hope! Treatment plans do work! Drug tests are not foolproof. Richard talks about his book, “The Addicted Child”. Sponsored by Youth Leadership Lessons: https://varsityleadership.com/ Resources Helptheaddictedchild.com The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse by Richard Capriola Quotes: “It doesn't do me any good to treat a teen for marijuana use if I can't help that teen with their anxiety. They're going to continue to medicate.” “Teens are interested in the brain and how it works, so I would teach them about the brain, and then I would introduce how drugs work in the brain.” “Build a support system for yourself too. You're going to need help and support too, not just your teen. This is going to be a journey.”
"Two issues drive teen substance use: drug availability and perception of risk. Availability: Today's teens know that obtaining substances is far too easy. For example, 70 percent of high school seniors say marijuana is either “fairly easy” or “very easy” to obtain. Seventy-seven percent say getting their hands on alcohol is very easy and twenty-one percent of seniors believe it is easy to find MDMA (ecstasy). Thirty percent say getting their hands on amphetamines is also very easy. Perhaps more alarming, 27 percent of eighth-graders said getting ahold of a drug like marijuana is either fairly easy or very easy to do. And nearly 50 percent said alcohol is easy to find." Parenting a child through substance abuse is one of the most difficult experiences imaginable; something none of us could have fathomed when our kids were young. Yet the statistics on teens and substance abuse is startling. The percentage of teens vaping (nicotine or marijuana) has increased in recent years, and many parents are either totally unaware or don't realize the extent of the problem. Today's guest, Richard Capriola, spent years working as an addiction counselor at the Menninger Clinic in Houston Texas, and has now written the helpful guide, The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse. This book educates parents on everything from the types of drugs kids are abusing and what drug use does to the adolescent brain, to the kinds of treatment available for addiction. There is also a great resource list in the book for parents to find the help and support they need. In this interview we chat about the content of the book, and Richard shares hopeful stories from families who have overcome addiction to find a brighter future. We are all impacted by substance abuse to some extent, and I think you'll find this an informative and encouraging conversation! One of the many concerns weighing down on parents is how to keep their teens safe from abusing alcohol and drugs. It's not the bad teens who are abusing alcohol and drugs. It's not the bad parents who raise teens who have alcohol and drug problems. All teens are vulnerable to alcohol and drug addiction. The ways teens are hardwired especially make them vulnerable to all sorts of addictions. Richard Capriola, substance abuse counselor and author of the book The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse, says that during his time working with adolescents, he noticed that a lot of parents were surprised at the extent of their child's use of substances. Unfortunately, they misinterpret the signals they're seeing and they tend to write it off as just being some type of developmental issue. They get trapped into thinking this is just some crazy teenage behavior that's going on and it'll pass. And then later, they find out it wasn't quite the case. Don't just assume it's normal adolescent development. Pay attention to any changes you see in the child's appearance, behavior, and attitude. Those can all be warning signs that maybe something's going on underneath the surface which you need to investigate a little bit deeper. Seek the Underlying Issue There's a much better chance of moving adolescents away from alcohol or drug use if parents can identify and address the underlying issue that's driving the child to use alcohol or drugs. Once you're able to move the discussion away from focusing on alcohol and drug abuse, you're opening the door for them to talk about what's really troubling them and the real reason they're using alcohol and drugs. And so, you move the conversation to get at the core issue. It's a Team Effort As much as addiction affects the child, it also affects the entire family system so the family needs treatment as well. And this is where social work comes into play. Dealing with adolescent substance abuse in your family all becomes a team effort because there are a lot of issues involved that go beyond just substance use. At the end of the COVID tunnel, the thought of light is very appealing — 2020 was a whopper. The pandemic has affected us all differently. We’ve developed our own ways of navigating hurdles and managing emotional stress. Middle and high school kids faced unique challenges as they missed iconic milestones and were robbed of social lives. While drugs and alcohol have always been a concern for parents, 2020 saw a rise in addiction among adolescents looking for a coping mechanism. Author Richard Capriola brings decades of experience to the conversation and shares ideas on how parents can best support their kids. His book, “The Addicted Child,” lays out the warning signs and offers seasoned advice to help turn this trend around. Episode 43 of Modern Dadhood opens with a brief catch-up on Marc’s solo-dadding weekend and a realization that the release of this episode falls on the Friday of Mother’s Day weekend. The guys quickly formulate a plan to let their wives take over the next episode and mom it up for half an hour! The guys discuss their (quite different) experiences with their second doses of the Pfizer vaccine, which leads into a conversation about the pandemic, the light at the end, and the impacts that the past year has had on people of all ages. The guys discuss the differences between younger children and high school aged adolescents and coping mechanisms for stress, depression, and trauma—including drugs and alcohol. Marc brings up a recent episode of NHPR’s The Exchange, covering a similar topic with guest Jessica Lahey, before playing back a recent conversation with author Richard Capriola.Richard is a father one grown son who has spent much of his career counseling young people with alcohol and substance abuse issues, and recently published the book The Addicted Child, A Parent’s Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse. Rick joins to promote his book, and we discuss topics including:• Raising his son as a widower• The importance of writing a simple and clear guide for parents• The harm in labeling someone an "addict"• When is the right time to discuss substance misuse with your kids?• The neuroscience of adolescent substance use• What has changed from the "Just Say No" era to now?• Warning signs to watch out for in our kids• The importance of listening to words and the feelings behind them• What assessments are, and why they're important• The impact of the pandemic on young people The episode culminates with a no-explanation-needed installment of Did I Just Say That Out Loud? in which Adam finds himself doing... some dirty work.Stay tuned for Episode 44, when our wives will take over the podcast—and do whatever the heck they want with the time![Episode Transcript] Links:Richard Capriola [website]The Addicted Child [Amazon]DrugFree.orgRed Vault AudioCaspar BabypantsSpencer AlbeeStuffed Animal [Marc's musical project]

From his BIO: "Growing up the thing that really changed and defined much of my childhood was losing my best friend when I was 10 years old to Cystic Fibrosis. From that point forward a creative spark lit inside me that I really wouldn't get in touch with until college when my friend convinced me at the last second to change my major over to film. After that I stuck with film and video sometimes to a stubborn extent in my career. I started my own business at age 19 and I've been at it ever since. My writing side never truly went away and was reignited after many years of battling depression especially in the tedium of wedding videography. To start off 2021 I collected 5 years worth of poetry in a collection which I just self published mid-January." https://totonyproductions.com Enjoy!

In this edition of The Way Out we've got a must listen interview with Richard Capriola who shares with us invaluable tools that can serve as a guide we can use should we have an adolescent child or loved one that may be engaging in Substance Abuse. Many of us know all too well, how devastating addiction and alcoholism can be to a family, especially if the addicted individual is a child or adolescent. For over two decades, Richard has been providing mental health and addiction counseling services to both adults and adolescents, giving him a wealth of experience and knowledge in the areas of addiction and mental health diagnosis and treatment. One critical fact we explore in our discussion is the key differences in how addiction manifests itself in the life of an adolescent as compared to an adult. These key differences impact how we identify a substance abuse problem in an adolescent versus an adult and can make all the difference in making a real and meaningful difference in a child's life. Richard has distilled all of this incredibly valuable wisdom and practical guidance in his new book The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse. We discuss how we recognize substance abuse, addiction, alcoholism, as well as process and mental health disorders in an adolescent child, how we can get them the help they need, and what that help looks like in adolescent children so listen up.
