On the first episode of Guardians of the Future in 2023, I went over some housekeeping items about the podcast and coverage of the Cleveland Guardians farm system at Next Year in Cleveland. 1. We start off this episode by discussing a Cleveland Guardians prospect hiring a new agency. Cleveland's 2021 first round draft pick Gavin Williams is now represented by the Boras Corporation, mega agent Scott Boras' agency. We talk about why it's not a big deal right now, why it eventually could be, but to not worry about it much yet. We discuss the history between Cleveland and Scott Boras as well to give a comparison. 2. Oscar Gonzalez took Cleveland by storm with his unique walkup song, the SpongeBob Squarepants theme, and some big time clutch hits in the regular season and postseason, including a series winning walk-off homer. As we review the right field pot for Cleveland in 2022, we give our thoughts on Gonzalez's unlikely rise last year and what the future holds for him. We discuss Will Brennan some, and the other players who stayed in right field for a brief time in 2022. Some breaking news happened while we were recording, as the Brewers traded RF Hunter Renfroe to the Angels. Renfroe was someone we planned to discuss to see if he would be an external option for Cleveland, should they choose to upgrade the position. We also talked about other external outfield options, including St. Louis' Tyler O'Neil and Juan Yepez, Ramon Laureno of the Oakland Athletics, and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielders. 3. After discussing the current options and possible external options, we get into the prospect depth in RF in Cleveland. The Mariners were down 8-1 to the Blue Jays before completed the second-largest comeback in playoff history. Seattle advances to the ALDS and will face Houston. There was a pitcher's duel in Cleveland but Oscar Gonzalez sent the Guardians to the next round with one swing of the bat in the 15th inning. All this (and more) on today's episode.

The Tampa Bay Rays are Cleveland Guardians south. They have nearly double-digit former Cleveland coaches and players on the roster. As a matter of fact, they have acquired the three central players from the Jonathan Lucroy deal. Yu Chang and Francisco Mejia were the big pieces but at the time Shawn Armstrong had pitched in the majors and had an ERA under two with a strikeout per nine over 15. The fourth player was Greg Allen. We revisit this trade since Armstrong picked up the loss and again the major pieces are all in Tampa. We also talk about the Miller deal as maybe the most successful player from both of those trades is JP Feyereisen who is also a pitcher for you guessed it Tampa.  We switched to a game with significant consequences but saw very little happen. Tampa Bay Rays have a magic number of one but lost two of three to Cleveland. I had predicted that Jeffrey Springs would be a hard matchup and he was, but Cal Quantrill was just as good. The Guardians rally late to win thanks to Will Brennan, Steven Kwan, and Oscar Gonzalez. We talk about the choice to walk Jose to face Oscar and why it was an odd choice. We end with some talk about the weird season flips for Bo Naylor and Bryan Lavastida. Bo is with the team on the taxi squad with a chance to be added before the end of the year. I wonder if Lavastida might be taken off the 40-man, and if they will promote yet another unicorn this year to the roster making rookie number 17. We then talk about how Steven Kwan still can't seem to get any respect. If one is talking about rookies in baseball and don't mention him then you are doing it wrong. Your Cleveland Guardians are the American League Central Division champs. A team that was more often than not picked to finish fourth in the division has run away with the division. The big driver today was Steven Kwan, and despite a historic season, why is it that Kwan can't seem to get any respect? Why is it that this very young team can't seem to get any respect? We get into some recent slights on MLB.com including an article that listed Kwan at seven and then didn't give him his write-up. Then included another rookie outfielder who has been worth a win less than Oscar Gonzalez this year who didn't even merit a mention. I know I can be tough on Terry Francona, but instead, I focus on what he does well which might be harder to judge than what we see on the field. The way his players play for him and the way he seems to inspire is something that there is no easy way to quantify. We look back at how Texas won the offseason thanks to the moves they made. Still, it was the lack of moves that might have led to the Guardians great successes like giving Steven Kwan a chance to start who has outperformed the combined seasons of two of the players fans really wanted in Austin Meadows and Jesse Winker as a matter of fact so has Oscar Gonzalez. We get into these games over the weekend which saw Cleveland beat up on top lefty relievers, have a game where they only had extra-base hits, and saw them clinch a division crown. We end with some odds and ends. We talk about Zach Plesac and his start over the weekend. We discuss the postseason roster. We focus on how things are just starting for this team. All the Cleveland Guardians do is WIN. They took another one from the Chicago White Sox in a game that saw the Guardians jump out early and then piled on before securing the win over the Chicago White Sox. The lead in the division jumps to six games, with the magic number down to seven games for the Guardians with six games yet left against the Kansas City Royals. The three stars today are Josh Naylor, Steven Kwan, and Triston McKenzie. This leads me to ask the question who is the top player this team needs to consider extending this offseason? Next up with talk about Steven Kwan's place in recent Guardians/Indians history. This team has completely, totally, and utterly failed to develop outfielders and Steven Kwan is already top four among all draft or signed and developed outfielders in terms of bWAR in the last 30 years in his FIRST year. Oscar Gonzalez also gets a shout-out for making the top ten already as well. The Cleveland Guardians win again paired with a Chicago White Sox loss means the Guardians currently have a four-game lead in the division which is actually more like 4.5 game lead. I explain why this is the case. We dig into the Guardians roster and help explain why it is that I feel like this team for once is in such a good spot that they might not need to look for multiple upgrades this offseason. It feels like a majority of this lineup has earned a chance to continue their run into next year. I also came up with a fun option to think about when watching and following up on a game. I am curious about what others think. We focus on the win. The Cleveland Guardians sweep the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. After the first game both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani were held in check and Cleveland came back late to win this one. The three stars were Jose Ramirez, Andres Gimenez, and Oscar Gonzalez. We also dig into the news that Zach Plesac was let go by his agency. It is a little weird as while he has had a multitude of minor issues, nothing on the larger scale that typically merits an agency cutting a player.  We end by reading the quote from Elvis Andrus and explain why that was such a dumb move and a dumb quote by a player whose team is behind in the standings. We explain why the White Sox are set up to gain ground over the next week. While also getting into the promotion of Hunter Gaddis for the Guardians with Xzavion Curry likely to get promoted this weekend for the doubleheader. Oscar Gonzalez wins this one for the Cleveland Guardians. I explain I do not hate him, or wish any ill will. The Guardians have so few right-handed bats I very much want him to be extremely successful. We also look at some old friend alerts across the league as several players have been on the move. We talk about the weird situation that has led to the Angel's failures and wonder aloud if the Guardians should cash in prospect capital to try and acquire Shohei Ohtani for a rental for next year with the knowledge that a draft pick would also be returned when he inevitably left. Is it worth the cost to acquire to help push this team over? Not to mention the eyes, excitement, and ticket/gear sales it would lead to. We dig into the win, a game the Guardians maybe got a little lucky to win. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim had a ton of walks but they were not able to put anything together to get more than one run across. We also find out that Emmanuel Clase has the lowest ERA in the history of the MLB for any player with more than 50 appearances, that is pretty darn good.  We look at some numbers for the Cleveland Guardians. We spend a lot of time on who produces in the minors, and about the good and bad of game-to-game performance. But I realized we really haven't discussed the year-round numbers just in terms of who has been the top producers on this team. The Cleveland Guardians have swept the Minnesota Twins expanding their lead on the Twins to 4.5 games and their overall lead in the American League Central to 2.5. The Twins are under .500 and dropped to third place for the first time since April. We get into the big win from Friday which the Guardians tried to give up late but managed to hold on and win. We get into the good, the bad, and the hairy.  Next up is the next two games in this series, another pair of wins for the Cleveland Guardians starting with the Oscar Gonzalez-powered Sunday game which saw the Guardians manage seven walks. They have weeks where they don't get seven walks. Bryan Shaw tried to give it away but the Guardians held on slammed the door and beat the Twins. On Sunday Bieber was bloody brilliant and the Guardians continued to walk and win. We discuss the upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels who have had one of the worst offenses in baseball in the second half. They are a team that are very beat up, and the Guardians should dominate over the next three games.
