I have learned a lot of lessons over the years, made plenty of mistakes, and every year I realize how important is to continue to be yourself, do what makes you smile, and live your life with zest. Research proves that those with a sunny disposition and optimistic attitude live 15% longer in life. That's another decade my friends. So here is the question for you.How do you live your life? How much zest do you truly have in your life. The VIA Institute on character defines ZEST this way:Zest means approaching a situation, or life in general, with excitement and energy, not approaching tasks or activities halfway or halfheartedly. People who are high in zest are excited to get up in the morning, and they live their lives like an adventure. Zest is a dynamic strength that is directly related to physical and psychological wellness. This strength has the strongest ties to overall life satisfaction and a life of engagement.

Hear how games can make your employees' effectiveness soar! Several years ago, Andy (my husband and business partner) and I went to Brussels to train in Innovation Games. IG is a wonderful set of creative tools to help people see things in new ways by playing games. In fact, IG downloads are the most frequent downloads from our website, www.simonassociates.net. Here at SAMC, we integrate IG into many of our workshops and leadership programs. Take a look at some of our IG white papers and PowerPoints which might open up your mind to what gamification can offer you, your team members and your customers as you rethink your organization to face the challenges of these fast-changing times. Today's podcast is with gamification strategist Naomi Redel I was thrilled to recently meet Naomi Redel to discuss how she has become a gamification strategist with her own methods for increasing the effectiveness of organizations through what she calls “Collaborative Emotional Intelligence.”  Our podcast was global. Naomi was in Israel, and I was in New York. We had a wonderful discussion about people, the power of games, and the type of work she does with organizations that need to boost their people power.  Watch and listen to our conversation here Some background on Naomi and what she has created After years of working as an innovation and marketing consultant with leading Israeli companies, Naomi felt firsthand the frustration of watching brilliant strategies flounder in C-suite silos, unable to trickle down and make an impact, because of lack of time, motivation, and the right tools to institutionalize them. So what did she do? Create a multilayered system that uses collaborative emotional experiences with cutting-edge technologies and gamification to push the boundaries of implementation and embed those strategies into people's hearts and minds. She then followed this with the creation of the first-ever board game in positive psychology, Positive Turn, which is recommended by the VIA Institute of Character Strengths and used as an innovation for companies in France.   She also co-founded HappierMe and led the design and development of the HappierMe platform, a system of minigames and exercises designed to make the practice of happiness easy and accessible anywhere and anytime.  Naomi earned her Master's in Business Administration and Economics (with distinction) and graduated Cum Laude BA in Economics (with distinction) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. You can contact Naomi on LinkedIn or by email at naomi.redel@gmail.com. Laura is an entrepreneur and mentor at heart. She sees and values each person's uniqueness and believe that uniqueness leads to life purpose and fulfillment and contributes to the overall success of a team or organization. There are two things that inspire her: 1) Helping people learn new ways of being and doing; and 2) Creating innovative educational and organizational environments. When she encounters an outdated “system” or “process” that no longer serves a purpose, she rises to the challenge (beautifully!) of creating a new one that will provide abundant opportunities for generations to come. Laura is Founder and President of Bloom360 Learning Community, a non-profit private school serving children and young adults with neuro-diverse needs. Laura has engaged in multiple training opportunities provided by the VIA Institute of Character in the areas of using character strengths at work, building effective teams and one-on-one strength based coaching. She also has completed the advanced practice course, “Character Strengths Interventions.” Laura earned a Bachelor of Accounting degree from the University of Wisconsin. She enjoys speaking and contributing at industry conferences and roundtables. Laura is Past President of St. Francis Children's Center, a non-profit organization serving children with special needs. Episode 17. In today's news episode, we discuss "Top 5 Biggest Challenges via Institute of Financial Accountants." Really interesting points arising from a piece via https://www.accountancyage.com/2022/01/03/2021-how-the-accountancy-industry-adapted-to-change-and-uncertainty/ (AccountancyAge) reviewing 2021 for the accountancy profession and the challenges firms have faced. All of these will loom larger in 2022. Key takeaways from this episode include: >how the IFA has looked back at 2021 and looked forward to 2022 to see how the accounting profession has adapted to all that has happened >asking how accountants as a breed cope with change and can be agile and adaptive >the number one driver what generally tends to cause the most change and adaptation in accountancy >"As the year is drawing to a close, there is a growing expectation that many of these temporary adaptations will now become embedded in long-term business operations. This has resulted in the changing face of many business practices and a pivoting of services in order to survive." >the impact of Brexit, not just in the UK but throughout the world, and how it has created international business opportunities for accountants >"Evidently, the UK's exit from the EU has created necessary demand and opportunities for practice outside of its borders." >how digital tech is transforming accounting and which technologies are adding most value to accountancy firm and their clients >"Digital transformation has continued, as the sector looks at ways to further embrace the digital shift and seize the opportunities that emerging technology presents." >why the day-long accountants training course has given way to more bite-size learning approaches for CPE or CPD and skills training >some of the various legal and regulatory changes accountants must stay current on, and how this affects their bandwidth for other things like innovation >the expanding threat to accountants and their clients of money laundering and fraud, leading to opportunities in cyber-security >"The pandemic has only served to exacerbate the growing problem of fraud, and as it has shown no signs of abating throughout 2021, neither have the efforts of fraudsters in finding new ways of operating." >why climate change represents significant opportunities for accountants with ESG and CSR initiatives becoming increasingly relevant >"As 2021's door shuts and 2022's opens, one thing now placed at the top of everyone's agenda is tackling climate change, as businesses focus more on their impact on society and the environment." >the 'burning platform' of environmental and social governance in the light of COP26 summit and what it means for the businesses that accountants and CPAs serve >what the more proactive accounting professionals will be doing to capitalise on these challenges. In my introduction, I talk about the necessity of exercising caution when reading self-help books, especially those penned by big-name celebrities and overnight successes. Even if written with a genuine desire to help others, the author may look back on their path to success with confirmation bias (or survivorship bias) which can seriously skew the usefulness of the text. An important thing to realise about the apparent evidence of their route to success is that correlation does not equal causation (you can read some amusing examples here and a very good explanation in connection with data here). And of course, remember that if the advice in these books worked all the time, there would be a great many more millionaires and happy marriages than there actually are.I also give a clue about the subject matter for the next episode's introduction, inspired by a conversation with a friend. The main interview is with Dr Roger Bretherton from the University of Lincoln with whom I discuss the growing field of Character Strength and Positive Psychology. Roger does most of his work addressing businesses and large organisations, helping them to get the best from their employees but also, critically, forcing the management to take responsibility for how their own strengths and attitudes affect the organisation and employee performance. There is an online questionnaire that you might like to take (I did) at The VIA Institute on Character website – like me, you can just get the free report if you don't fancy paying for a more in-depth version. But I think you might find the results fascinating, and it will certainly help you to get the most from my conversation with Roger. We also talk about the differences between traditional psychology, and its approach which focuses on repairing damage, and the new and growing field of positive psychology, which aims to focus on the character strengths and positive aspects of the client/patient's personality, enabling them to build greater resilience and to gain greater overall satisfaction from life. Our conversation also touches briefly on different approaches to spirituality and even imposter syndrome! I really enjoyed this conversation with Roger and I think you will find him a stimulating guest to listen to.In the Relaxation on the Beach guided meditation, we work on forgiveness towards others for their failings and transgressions that have hurt us, and we also seek forgiveness for ourselves for any hurt we may have caused others, however inadvertently. Be aware that it might be a good idea to think about less difficult situations to begin with, working up to tackling issues with more difficult or important people in your life after trying this a couple of times.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For years I have been a huge fan of the organization SongwritingWith:Soldiers / SW:S and the depth, power and beauty of what they produce. SongwritingWith:Soldiers holds weekend retreats across the U.S. for veterans from all conflicts. Since 2012, we have connected with hundreds of veterans and military families, creating a safe and inspiring environment to share their experiences and write songs with professional songwriters. These songs have been recorded and streamed across the internet, reaching and connecting more veterans and raising civilian awareness of the challenges the military community faces. So… you can only imagine how BEYOND thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to have a conversation with the program director and co-founder Mary Judd. She is a brilliant and down to earth woman, visionary, and trailblazer. Mary is a master at creating collaborative programs that inspire connections and highlight individual and community strengths. When witnessing Darden Smith write a song with a veteran, she was compelled to put her skills to work in creating the SongwritingWith:Soldiers program. With vast experience in Positive Psychology, educational programming and organizational communications, Mary helps SW:S create the most effective and meaningful experiences for everyone involved. Her creative reach is reflected in her client list which includes New York State Department of Economic Development (I LOVE NY); MentorCoach training programs; VIA Institute on Character; Indian Ladder Farms: The Mayerson Academy, The HAPPY Movie; Discovery Retreats, and more. She has studied Positive Psychology with leading researchers from around the world, is an international workshop presenter on the subject and was a discussion facilitator at a United Nations meeting on Happiness and Well-Being. She serves on the editorial board for the India Journal of Positive Psychology and PsyInsight magazine. Mary co-founded The Barn School, an award-winning sustainable agriculture camp that raises funds for family farms and Heifer International®. Welcome to Episode 40.  This is a very exciting day as it’s the first day of the month in which my book, For Flourishing’s Sake, will be published.  Due to disruption caused by Covid-19, the book will be published twice, which means two opportunities to celebrate!  The Kindle version is coming out on 18th June and the paperback will be out a bit later this summer, on 21st August. So today, I thought I would talk about one of the themes from the book that I feel is particularly relevant to the challenges we are all living through: Leadership. According to the VIA Institute on Character, the character strength of leadership can be split into the distinct areas of ‘practice’ and ‘personal quality’.  As a practice, this is what we do that makes us leaders, by “defining, establishing, identifying or translating direction” and as a personal quality, it’s our desire and ability to aim for, accede to and ultimately carry out leadership roles.  The VIA further distinguish between ‘transactional leaders’ and ‘transformational leaders’.  We need both, of course, but in the book I focused mainly on transformational leadership. Anyone can be a leader.  Paul Bateson is one of the teachers I interviewed for my book.  He is a shining example of committed leadership from someone not in a leadership position.  When he decided to launch a kindness initiative in his school, the ripples spread far and wide.  He fired up the imaginations of his students, who took ownership of the initiative, and brought most of the staff on board.  He did this despite a leadership team who, whilst ‘putting up no resistance’, did not facilitate what he was doing or make any moves towards adopting a whole school approach.  (Roberts, F. “For Flourishing’s Sake”, Jessica Kingsley Publishers 2020) What can we learn from Paul Bateson? In the UK, some schools are “re-opening” this week - I’m putting this in inverted commas as schools here haven’t actually been closed.  Children of key workers, along with the most vulnerable children, have still been going to school, as have many teachers. But this week, more children will return to school.  In other countries, children have been back at school for a little while. But school is not what those children and their teachers were used to. We are all having to adapt to teaching, learning and interacting differently for the foreseeable future.  Teachers and school leaders, and in fact all staff working in schools, can follow Paul’s example.  In his case, he led a kindness initiative; kindness would be a great place to start to help each other cope with the challenges we’re all facing.  Tempers are likely to be a bit more frayed than usual, so we can all focus on leading through showing patience and understanding towards others, taking a moment to respond if we think our answers may come out a bit ‘snappy’, or accepting that others may be a little less friendly towards us as it may just be their way of handling the situation. Children can be leaders, too.  When I interviewed Jo Owens, Director of Ethical Leadership at Lichfield Cathedral School, she told me that at her school, the junior school have ‘red caps’ - year 4 pupils who look out for other children who don’t have anyone to play with during break times and engage them in games. This is harder to do when children need to be in bubbles and observe strict distancing rules, of course, but particularly when things are so unsettling, giving even very young children small positions of leadership and responsibility can divert their focus away from their fears and allow them to feel useful.  And let’s not forget that helping others is a great way to support wellbeing, so when children have the opportunity to help out in school, this will support their own wellbeing. So spend a few moments to think about the different ways you can be a transformational leader; a leader who, according to the VIA, “motivates their followers to perform at an extremely high level, fostering a climate of trust and commitment to the organisation and its goals”.  Perhaps set yourself a challenge to identify people who have inspired you in this way, and make a list of what qualities they display, and how they behave, in order to be such transformational leaders.  Whilst still being you, can you emulate any of those qualities and behaviours? What can you learn from great leaders you have followed? And think about which children are showing this leadership quality and can be encouraged to lead their peers.  I know from working in many schools over the years that there are ample examples of such leadership to be found in school staff and pupils.  Let’s nurture these leadership qualities so that we can all weather this storm with a little more ease, together. … If you have found this episode useful, please give the podcast a five star rating on iTunes to help it reach more people and please spread the word. S1 Ep32: Reappraise positively with strengths - Covid-19 Wellbeing Activities

For Flourishing's Sake

Welcome to episode 32.  As promised, while the current Coronavirus situation continues to evolve and provide us with challenges, in each episode I will share with you a simple activity that you (or your pupils or your own children) can do to support your wellbeing. As many of us are spending more time in homes we share with other people, we may be getting to a point where we are more easily irritated and where rows might erupt.  Here is an activity that may help - it is best suited to adults or older children and teens as it requires quite a deep level of reflection.  This activity is adapted from Ryan Niemiec’s book Character Strengths Interventions: A field guide for practitioners (1).  Either do this as a solo reflection activity - you may wish to write down your answers (be as detailed as possible, take your time) - or you can pair up with someone, ideally not someone closely linked to the person the activity relates to.  Perhaps pair up with a friend or colleague via phone or video call and take it in turns to talk through your answers while the other person listens. Start off by thinking of a person that has hurt or offended you and think clearly about that person and the thing they have said or done that caused you hurt or offence. Look at the person and their imperfections in light of the complexity of being human - as a human being they have flaws and character strengths (see the VIA Institute on Character for more information on character strengths. What character strengths (however small) do you see in that person? Was the thing they said or did perhaps a display of one of their character strengths which they may have been over-using or using inappropriately? If you can, view this person as someone that needs to experience positive growth and transformation, or that perhaps is already working on this but gets it wrong sometimes. Now think about yourself: What character strengths did you show while the ‘offence’ took place? What character strengths are you showing right now? This activity guides us, via the use of character strengths, through a process called “positive reappraisal” which Ryan Niemic describes as “a type of meaning-based coping”.  This enables us to add perspective and balance to situations, events and our views of other people and can help us change our perception from unpleasant or stressful to harmless and possibly even beneficial.  Take the current Coronavirus pandemic, for example. Whilst the situation is undoubtedly difficult and traumatic - and for some far more than others - I have experienced many unexpected benefits and, judging by conversations and social media posts, so have many of you.  From more time connecting with people because we make a special effort to chat on the phone or via Skype/Zoom etc, to experimenting in the kitchen, to making a conscious effort to exercise, there are many things we are now doing that we weren’t doing consistently or appreciating as much before.  And for that, at least, I am hugely grateful.  Looking at these positive aspects (whilst not negating the trauma, loss and hardship we are going through) is one form of positive reappraisal. According to research by Folkman (2), reappraising stressful situation (even when the stress is severe or distressing) through a more positive lens can improve our mood (or what psychologists call “positive affect”).  When it comes to situations that have caused offence, such as in the exercise I suggest today, reappraising the situation with compassion can replace negative emotions with positive ones and can help us forgive (3). Let me know via @FlourishingED on Twitter how you get on with this week’s activity and how you are.  I’d love to hear from you! Do also get in touch if you’d like to contribute content to this podcast as a guest, particularly if you’d like to share one or more activities that can help children, parents or other teachers at this difficult time. Also look out for a special edition longer episode of the For Flourishing’s Sake podcast - it is coming soon, I promise! -  which is the audio of a virtual panel that I hosted the week before last. I look forward to catching up with you next week.  Until we speak again, be safe, be well and For Flourishing’s Sake, have as great a week as it’s currently possible to have!   References: Niemiec, R. For Flourishing's Sake

Welcome to episode 29.  Over the last week, our world seems to have changed dramatically!  Coronavirus has been declared a Pandemic by the World Health Organisation and people don’t know which advice to follow and how best to protect themselves and their loved ones.  I am not qualified to give any advice on this, so I won’t.  But I want to help you navigate these challenging times for yourself and for the children you work with, with the help of Positive Psychology. Children are often acutely aware of the world around them.  Already the world has been feeling pretty uncertain for quite some time, but Coronavirus has added an additional layer and a certain level of urgency and panic for many people - this will include children you work with. So…what can you do to support their mental health at this time? Now is an ideal time to encourage them to talk about their emotions in a safe space, to express the complexity and depth of what they’re feeling and help them unpack those emotions. For the youngest children, you may wish to have wall charts with various emojis and encourage them to place their names under the emoji that best reflects how they feel, and to move this around as each day and week progresses, to reflect their changing emotions throughout each day.  You can have conversations in circle time around these.  For older children and adolescents, you can have discussions about their emotions around the current crisis during tutor period, or when discussing related topics in History, Science, English Literature etc. Now is also a good time to focus on strengths.  You can encourage children to identify and discuss the strengths they need individually and that the country and the world needs at this time.  They may identify the need for bravery as we all face our fears around the current situation, or for creativity to find new ways of working, learning and interacting.  Curiosity may be a strength we all tap into as we learn more about the specific virus and about the spread of disease, historical pandemics and the way treatments are developed, for example. Honesty may also be a prominent strength to focus on as we need to self-isolate if we develop symptoms. They may discuss the need for the strength of leadership, and whether that only comes from country leaders, school leaders, business leaders etc, or from all of us.  And how about love, prudence, self-regulation? Of course, we mustn’t forget kindness! Kindness towards those who need to self-isolate and may need help to get food and medication supplies, kindness towards others in not hoarding scarce supplies in supermarkets, kindness towards those who are worried about vulnerable loved ones. You can find out more about the 24 VIA character strengths from the VIA Institute on Character. You can focus on strengths by specifically asking children to discuss or write about the strengths needed in the current situation, you can increase the way you use strengths vocabulary with children and adults in school, you can encourage strengths-spotting in others, or you can set children and colleagues strengths-challenges (use a particular strength in novel ways and see who comes up with the most unusual ways to use it).  The possibilities are almost endless! If you or any of your children display symptoms and need to follow the current advice to self-isolate for seven days, or if you need to close your school, this is an ideal opportunity to practise a couple of great positive psychology interventions: Write down three good things - or think of it as ‘what went well today?’ - each evening before bed for seven days. Identify one of your ‘signature strengths’ (you can do this on the VIA website for adults and children ages 10 or above…or you can discuss strengths and examples to help each pupil identify their key strengths ahead of any self-isolation or closure) and find seven new ways to use it in seven days. Both these activities were found in one ground-breaking study (1) to cause lasting increases - for six months - in happiness and a reduction in depression for the same amount of time. A more recent replication of the study (2) also found that these interventions can lead to lasting increases in happiness. I hope this episode helps you draw some positive inspiration from these challenging times we are living through.  Keeping ourselves mentally well in addition to looking after our physical health is more important than ever.  Look after yourself and, as always, I look forward to catching up with you next week.  Until we speak again, For Flourishing’s Sake, have a great week!   References: Seligman, M. Welcome to episode 22. If you’re a regular listener of the For Flourishing’s Sake podcast, you will know that I often relate episode content to recent events in my life.  Last week, I spent two days at University as part of my EdD (Doctorate in Education).  As each member of our group introduced herself to each new tutor we met, one of the questions that often came up was why we had decided to embark on an EdD.  There is of course a multitude of reasons why we each decided to begin this journey; I can think of at least three motivators for myself. But one reason that was common amongst a number of us was that we want to learn more, we want to find out answers to questions, we enjoy the process of on-going learning. Curiosity and Love of Learning are two of the VIA Institute on Character’s 24 character strengths.  Character strengths are so integral to positive psychology that I have mentioned them in a number of previous episodes (see episodes 1, 6 and 18).  The VIA Institute distinguishes between Curiosity and Love of Learning: “While curiosity is the motivating force that leads you to seek out new information, love of learning refers to the desire to hold on to and deepen that information. The curious person is motivated by the pursuit of knowledge; the person who loves learning is motivated by the expansion of their fund of knowledge.  Where curiosity is often associated with a great deal of energy and a drive to gather information, the lover of learning is often more contemplative.”  Which of these two strengths resonates more with you? What about some of your students?  Can you think of students who have a clear love of learning or a strong sense of curiosity? Both strengths are valuable and important in the context of flourishing, but today I’m focusing on curiosity.  It has strong links with happiness(1) and the VIA Institute highlights research findings making strong links between curiosity and satisfaction with life, as well as health and positive relationships. I am naturally very curious, though sometimes I fear that my curiosity may prompt me to ask socially unacceptable questions (or cause curious interruptions at an inappropriate point in a conversation, where they would simply interrupt the flow of another person’s narrative), so I often suppress my naturally curious instinct.  Ever since I began studying positive psychology, however, I have learnt to lean into my curiosity more.  It’s still a work in progress. So how can you lean into your curiosity and develop this strength further? Is there a task you don’t like doing?  Try finding three new aspects about that task that you weren’t previously aware of.  Or how about setting yourself the challenge of finding out something new about a colleague every day for seven days? Can you encourage your students to be more curious? Can you help them find sources of information to get the answers to random questions they ask?  Could you set them challenges to find out the most obscure facts about the subject matter you are currently teaching? Could you ask them to discover something new each day for a week on their usual route to school? I am curious to hear how you get on with this.  Let me know! And, as always, I look forward to catching up with you next week and, until we speak again, For Flourishing’s Sake, have a great week!   Everyday Hero - 60 second version (Corporate, motivational, you tube, podcast) Music by Pond5   References (1) Toner, E., Haslam, N., Robinson, J. and Williams, P., 2012. Welcome to episode 18.  This is going to be another shorter than usual episode as I am taking a rest from work and study over the festive season and preparing for a New Year’s Eve party with friends.  I hope you have taken a well-earned break this Christmas holiday, too! So often, at this time of year, we turn our attention to New Year’s Resolutions, frequently setting ourselves up to fail before the first month of the year has even concluded.  Don’t get me wrong - setting goals can be very useful and there are a number of great ways to do that, but why put yourself under the additional pressure of doing this for the start of a new year?  You can set yourself goals whenever you want. This year, instead, I am inviting you to reflect.  Firstly, reflect on the good parts of 2019.  We all face challenges and frustrations over time, and often we tend to focus on and remember the negatives far more easily than the positives, so take a few minutes to properly reflect on everything that has gone well for you this year.  Things you have achieved, challenges you have overcome, joyful events that have happened to you and the people you love.  Write them down. Take a moment to savour those positive memories. Savouring is a powerful positive psychology tool to help improve our wellbeing! Then, for each of your achievements and for each challenge you have overcome, reflect on what strengths you used to help you.  For example, I finished writing my book - For Flourishing’s Sake, which will be out in June 2020 (I may have mentioned this once or twice!) - while also completing my Master's in Applied Positive Psychology.  To do that, I used my strengths of perseverance, courage, love of learning, creativity and a hefty dose of humour! Make a note of the strengths that helped you in 2019.  Over the course of 2020, I will invite you to explore and work with them some more. If any of your positive memories from 2019 include something someone else did for you, now is an ideal opportunity to practise your strength of gratitude and thank them. For more information on character strengths, you can visit the VIA Institute at www.viacharacter.org. Doing this simple reflective activity should help you see 2019 out and 2020 in with a sense of gratitude and accomplishment, feeling positive about the year you are leaving behind and the strengths you possess that will help you tackle whatever 2020 throws at you.  Let me know how this goes for you. All that’s left for me to say is, whatever you do, if anything, to celebrate the beginning of a new year, I hope you have a wonderful time.  And, as always, until we speak again, For Flourishing’s Sake, have a great week.  Happy New Year - I’ll be back on Monday 6th January!   Everyday Hero - 60 second version (Corporate, motivational, you tube, podcast) Music by Pond5

For Flourishing's Sake

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 2, 2019 6:16

Hello! I’m so excited this day has finally come, after months of planning and looking forward to the launch of the “For Flourishing’s Sake” podcast, finally, it’s here! It seems apt that, as I launch this brand new podcast filled with hope that you will find it helpful and that it will live up to the excitement so many expressed in anticipation of its launch, I should focus this episode on hope and excitement.  If you are in the UK and this is the start of a new academic year for you, you may also be feeling a mixture of hope and excitement - I know I’ve seen much of this mix expressed on Twitter, particularly by newly-qualified teachers about to embark on their first teaching year after qualifying! I remember feeling the same way when I was a teacher! Your students are likely to feel a similar mix - they may welcome the return to school with the excitement about seeing their friends again, or as a relief from boredom during the long summer break, or even as a return to a safe haven if their home circumstances are challenging.  They may be hopeful that they’ll have great teachers, that they will get on with their classmates, that they will get good grades.  One of the key elements to flourishing is an awareness of and the ability to work on our character strengths.  There are different schools of thought on the nature of character strengths, from the philosophical basis used by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, to the psychology-based research by the VIA Institute on Character. According to the VIA Institute, the strength of hope is linked to our expectations about positive future events and outcomes.  It is closely linked to optimism and implies that we are in control; that we can take action towards achieving our goals and desires.  Psychologists talk about “explanatory style” in relation to optimism. If your explanatory style is optimistic, you tend to see events as specific to any given situation, susceptible to change, and external, whereas a person with a pessimistic explanatory style tends to perceive events as spanning across different situations, unchangeable and internal.  To put this simply, take a student that does badly in a test or exam.  If their explanatory style is optimistic, they’ll see this as a one-off event, they may even put it down to a particularly difficult paper rather than blaming themselves for not doing enough revision, and they’ll focus on being able to do better next time.  Whilst of course an overly optimistic explanatory style is not always helpful - it can lead to difficulties in taking responsibility, for example - having a certain tendency towards an optimistic explanatory style tends to mean you find it easier to be hopeful.  Take a moment to reflect on your natural explanatory style.  Are you more optimistic or pessimistic? Whichever way you lean naturally, you can still work on and make the most of your strength of hope.  If you are naturally pessimistic, you may just need to work a little harder at it. The VIA Institute don’t have a character strength called ‘Excitement’, but they do have one called ‘Zest’! Zest is characterised by a tendency to approach things with lots of energy and, yes, excitement; of having a sense of adventure about life.  According to the VIA, zest is a strength closely linked to physical and mental wellbeing, and to overall levels of happiness, so it’s well worth cultivating. Today, therefore, I invite you to tune in to your sense of hope and excitement as you begin your week and possibly your new academic year.  I know, because I’ve been there, that these are not always the most prominent emotions and thoughts you experience as a teacher when starting a new academic year or even just a new week, but while all emotions are valid and I am not asking you to ignore any emotions that make you feel less great about the days ahead, I am simply giving you a nudge to spend a bit more time focusing on those positive, feel-good emotions and character strengths: Hope and Excitement.  As you set off for work this morning, what are your hopes for today? What are you looking forward to and feeling excited about? Check in with your thoughts throughout the day and the week to actively remind yourself to focus on what has you all fired up and looking forward to the days ahead, and what positive outcomes and events you are hoping for. As you greet your students each day this week, why not ask them what they’re excited about and what their hopes are for the day, the week, the year even? Try it, and see what positive impact this deliberate focus brings… and let me know how you get on! And…For Flourishing’s Sake, have a great week!   Everyday Hero - 60 second version (Corporate, motivational, you tube, podcast) Music by Pond5

She had achieved her career goals, and everything looked great on paper. However, she had a nagging, unhappy feeling about work, and she found herself dragging her feet into work each day. One day, she was watching a popular tv show, and saw a segment on “positive psychology.” This segment would forever change her life. Michelle found one of Martin Seligman’s books. He’s the guru in the field of positive psychology. As she read (and later studied directly with Seligman), she realized that our goal should be to bring out the best in ourselves and others more consistently. The more we use our strengths in our jobs, the more engaging, energizing, and fulfilling our lives can be. Michelle started with the free VIA Survey, and found that her #1 trait was Curiosity. That led to her Ah Ha moment – the reason she was unhappy was because she wasn’t learning anything at work any more. In an effort to fulfill he need to learn new things, she implemented this plan: Read one new thing about positive psychology each day for 10 minutes. Michelle found that this exercise had a positive ripple effect throughout the rest of her day. It shifted how she felt at work. Each Friday, she emailed her boss 3 things she had learned through her reading that week. Later, she found out that he had been forwarding her emails to other people. At her 9 month review, he noted that the company hadn’t been using her strengths as effectively as they could be, and asked if she’d like to teach these ideas to others. This gave her a chance to put her strengths to work every day. The moments that people were able to actually see her strengths led to new career opportunities. In essence, Michelle ended up crafting her new career path. VIA is a a system that “diagnoses" the best in people. It’s a list of 24 character strengths that are consistent across cultures and history. The goal is to focus on the top 5 character strengths that light you up the most. Because we are affected by situations around us, Michelle recommends taking the survey every year. If there is a character strength you want to move up the list, there are methods to follow (but Michelle notes that it should only be because it’s something you value, not because society desires it). Here are 4 steps: Determine which strength you want to build Harness the natural part in your brain to create new habits (good or bad). Make sure you have some cue to work on that strength each day. For example, putting a book on your keyboard for the next day, or listen to a recording about this strength each day on your way to work. Try and use that strength when you are in a state of flow (when you can focus) Reward yourself each time you work on this new habit; it needs to be something you really want. For example, have a cup of coffee after your 10 minutes are up. Check out the resources below, because Michelle offers a free e-book on her website to help you be in your zone of greatness. It’s an excellent aide to improving yourself and creating new habits. Tool: Appreciative inquiry It’s a strengths-based approach to change, where you build on things that are working well. There is a positive effect on the company and the team. Spend 80% of your time on your strengths, and 20% on our weaknesses. You want commitment not compliance. Be realistic about how to get the best return on investment.   Resources of the Episode Here are ways to reach Michelle: Website Twitter Facebook LinkedIn YouTube Your Strengths Blueprint: How to be Engaged, Energized, and Happy at Work by Michelle McQuaid and Erin Lawn What Good is Positive Business?
