Feliks Banel's guests on this live broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY are a panel of expert local historians, researchers and authors who have been collaborating on a search for evidence of Peter Kirk's long-ago steel mill on Rose Hill, east of downtown Kirkland near the Costco. Matt McCauley, Kent Sullivan, Saundra Middleton (who is a descendant of Peter Kirk) and Michael Donnelly have been studying archives, maps, photos and other materials to paint a vivid picture of the partial construction of the mill in the 1890s, the specific whereabouts of various buildings and structures, as well as the ultimate fate of the site (and of Kirk's venture) in the early 20th century. The group will be presenting two free illustrated public programs at Heritage Hall in Kirkland in October and November. The first will take place Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm; the second will take place on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 pm. More information: https://kirklandhistory.org/ We also played some vintage audio from Tony Ventrella, the beloved local broadcaster who passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at age 80. This LIVE broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY was originally presented at 8pm Pacific Daylight Time on Sunday, October 20, 2024 via SPACE 101.1 FM and streaming live via space101fm.org from studios at historic Magnuson Park – formerly Sand Point Naval Air Station - on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle.

When Michael Donnelly was designing the logo for his new company, he chose the image of the compass to indicate  direction, and the elephant to show loyalty, strength, memory and confidence. CBD Path is a new company providing hemp-based cannabinoid products designed to help with pain, anxiety, inflammation and sleep issues.  About Michael Donnelly Michael Donnelly is a former Navy SEAL, residing in Miami, founder of Alarm and Electronics Systems, and CBD Path. He is a board member for the Navy Seal Museum and  motivational speaker  passionate about paying it forward. Coming out of high school, Mike admits he wasn't the best student, so he mapped out a path to the military. Initially lured to become a Green Beret, he took a look at the Navy on advice of his mother. Seeing parachuting and explosives, he decided to seek to become a Navy SEAL "before being a SEAL was cool." Mike was one of 18 out of 127 candidates to graduate with BUD/S Class 173. Mike spent ten years on active duty, leaving in 1998 and serving a short period with the Navy Reserve.  Mike worked in the low voltage security alarm business in multiple roles before starting a company of his own. Today that company has multiple offices installing smart home technology across Florida and Georgia.  CBD Path Mike is truly passionate about helping the veteran community, so when cannabinoids were approved by the Federal Government, he starting researching. CBD Path was formed and now offers a variety of oils, topicals, pills, gummies and pet treats. We asked Mike to step into The Spotlight with a challenge - we were skeptical. These products still need additional research, so we dug in on the science and the positive outcomes. While there is a long path ahead, these products are generating notable results, and the success stories Mike shares are compelling.  Reach and follow CBD Path Website: https://www.thecbdpath.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thecbdpath/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecbdpath/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5fAL6Md5QDn1YlaAT9x39g A special offer for VeteranCrowd Spotlight listeners Visit the website and enter the code VETERANCROWD25 for 25% off the entire site! In fact, mother, father and grandfather had served in the Navy, so it was a natural. He joined at 17, went through basic and then came BUDs. Of the 127 who started, 18 graduated. After 10 years active duty, he took his high-risk attitude to civilian life and his organized and disciplined background gave him business skills. He started literally at the bottom, stringing wire under houses, until he could start his own business in the same industry. He has owned many companies since and has been a big money raiser in the causes for which he believes in. And CBD caught his eye as a natural healing agent, especially for vets. A new company, Michael is now active in getting CBD to more vets and others.

The Chatham Hotel Special is pretty mysterious because it is not altogether clear where the recipe for this cocktail even came from. We had a hard time even finding any mentions of this drink anywhere, so it made it a little difficult to discuss something that doesn't seem like it really exists. But that didn't stop us from talking about this cocktail that resembles a heavy dessert. There isn't a tremendous amount of information on the history of the hotel either. We had a name of a place at least, so we took a look at this New York hotel that might have been overshadowed by other fancier hotels of the time. In our research we found that the hotel got in a little trouble serving during dry periods of prohibition, was somehow in a legal suit with Bacardi, and most interestingly might have been the home to the first Moscow Mule. Join us as we try to figure out more about the Chatham Hotel Special, which doesn't seem to be all that special. The drink itself was definitely more on the fluffy side, using cream and chocolate liqueur. 1 1/2 oz brandy 1/2 oz ruby port 1/2 oz cream 1 dash dark creme de cacao I would also like to add that this episode features a little more of Michael Donnelly, our Brixton bartender, working his magic and talking about how the ingredients are working together in this cocktail.  Thank you Michael!

We're kicking off the series with the cocktail that I think of as THE cocktail of cocktails...the Manhattan. At the front of the show, Mr. Jason Kruse, our researcher, and I sat and discussed what he discovered while tracking down the origins of the Manhattan. First of all, the Manhattan's claim to fame as the longest unchanged cocktail stands up to the available information. The first version we found is, in fact, the same version served today. Though it has been played with and changed by various bartenders over the years, particularly in its heyday in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (and there are A LOT of variations on this drink), none of those versions stuck as the standard. The most popular year of origin is 1874.  This does not align with what we discovered as the first written recipe for the Manhattan which occurs in 1884.  1874 is not definitively wrong, but there is no evidence for its existence at that time, though, like any trade at the time, the culture and tradition was often passed down through word of mouth, so the Manhattan could have traveled unverified for some time.  The problem with the 1874 date, however, is that it is often attributed with a specific event that launched Samuel J. Tilden's political career which was supposedly attended by Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill's mother, where she so christened the drink Manhattan. Reliable sources, however, place her in England at the time preparing to give birth to Winston.  So it is decidedly not 1874 for that reason, though possibly 1874 for other reasons. We think it is also noteworthy that the Manhattan does not appear in Jerry Thomas' book in 1864.  His cocktail recipe book was the very first of its kind and featured the growing collection of drinks to be had in American bars at the time.  It is not definitive evidence that the Manhattan wasn't first made before that time, but rather a good indicator and with good evidence otherwise we would certainly accept it. So, we think the cocktail originated around the 1870s and 1880s with the first recorded instance in 1884, previously passed by word of mouth and culture. In this time frame we see better evidence that it was created at the Manhattan Club, a New York gentlemens' club frequented by the political elite. The claim was made by the Manhattan Club's founder, journalist, and chronicler Colonel Henry Watterson. We can accept this explanation if this fact wasn't suspiciously absent from his published history of the Manhattan Club in 1915...seems like a noteworthy item to omit, though, he could have been exercising some degree of political prudence by casually leaving it out in the five years of escalating temperance toward Prohibition. Finally, Jay told us about discovering another origin story published in the Baltimore Sun in 1908 claiming the Manhattan was born of the need for refreshment after a duel in the 1840s. For any others who stumble upon this story...we're pretty sure that it is a complete fabrication. None of the names match up, including a state senator, for which there would definitely be a record. It seems like we came across a 19th century version of the Onion. As a side note for those interested in Manhattan itself -- the word Manhattan is derived from the Native American Lenape words manna-hata which means "island of many hills." Manhattan was sold by its indigenous people for the equivalent of $1,050. The details and personalities are discusses specifically in the show as well as Jay's encounter with a false origin story that began with a duel. The ingredients in the Manhattan are as follows: 2 oz bourbon 1 oz vermouth 2 dashes Angostura bitters Maraschino cherry Our usual hang-out for tasting the cocktails we discuss is The Brixton in Andersonville in Chicago where Michael Donnelly mixes the cocktails and brings his own perspective to the drinks.  I was joined by Rachel, Kevin, Nicole and Bethany, the usual suspects, on this tasting adventure...and we tasted everything. Us newbies to the Manhattan initially thought the drink quite boozy, but then Nicole suggested we try some straight rye whiskey and we all recanted that perspective.  I have to admit, it tasted like what I expected of a classic cocktail with such a long pedigree, basic with no attempt to hide the alcohol, but rather enhance it. Michael was good enough to create two other versions, the Vieux Carre (which we will review in more depth at a later time) and a perfect Manhattan, at Nicole's request, whereupon she learned that she has the taste sensibilities of a 70 year old man.  A perfect Manhattan is one that includes equal parts of both sweet and dry vermouth.  Listen to the show to gather all of our impressions of the three drinks.
