Jordan 'Biggie' Steffens and Brooke Prichard are not just two of the nicest people that you can wish to meet but they also happen to be two of SA's strongest people! Biggie broke his third Guinness World Record in September this year when he pulled a 20,300-kg (44,753-lb) hydraulic crane across a five-metre distance, smashing the record for the heaviest vehicle pulled with the upper body and last year Brooke pulled the Victor Harbor horse tram at Granite Island and is only just getting started! Whilst Brooke is fairly new to the game, Biggie started his journey as a 14 year old where he was scouted by the SA Institute of Sport to join the weightlifting team and since this time he's pulled a Boeing 747 on live national television plus much more. On our chat we discussed what it was like for Brooke to have Biggie as her coach, what they love about being strongmen/women and how they both got into it and the diet and training involved for competition. Thanks so much to Brooke and Biggie for their time, to the Southern Slugs Football Club for sponsoring the episode and the amazing team at PodBooth for putting this great video together. https://legendswithbevo.com/ https://www.instagram.com/legendswithbevo/channel/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/legendswithbevo/ https://open.spotify.com/show/7gnyGc2AwYcuIRkvuS1Dxy https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/legends-with-bevo/id1444792076

Auditors in South Africa and elsewhere are under the spotlight for failing to expose corporate frauds. South African multinational Steinhoff teetered on the brink of collapse after German authorities revealed they were investigating irregularities in late 2017 - yet well-established elaborate schemes underpinned the financial jiggery-pokery. And, SA taxpayers have been wondering where the auditors were in the state capture years under former president Jacob Zuma. Earlier this year, finance minister Tito Mboweni dissolved the country's scandal-wracked audit body watchdog, Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors - which was run by audit professionals who failed to notice irregularities under their noses. Earlier this week, Deloitte Africa CEO Lwazi Bam hosted a fireside chat with Sir Donald Brydon, author of the Brydon Report, which is influential in debate on audit reforms globally. Sir Donald Brydon was at pains to note that it is not only up to auditors to spot fraud: shareholders, directors and regulators should take more responsibility. Chairman of the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants and Deloitte CEO Lwazi Bam spoke to Jackie Cameron, for BizNews, about the Brydon report and what it might mean for detecting fraud at listed companies in future.

Global minimum tax proposal misses the mark

Corporate taxation is one of the thorniest issues in international economic policy. Janet Yellen, US President Joe Biden’s treasury secretary, and a former head of the Fed weighed in when she grabbed the attention of the occupants of corner offices worldwide with a speech to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs earlier this month. The headline was a call for countries to agree on a global minimum tax rate for large companies. Over the past decade growing corporate tax avoidance (driven by well-known international economic factors) has met with a growing public backlash. It has an understandable moral clarity, apart from the loss of revenue. Hence the renewed debate on a global minimum corporate tax rate. However, accepting that there is a real problem here about the erosion of domestic tax bases, the question is how the various competing national interests can negotiate a sensible compromise here by June this year given the complexities? Michael Avery spoke to SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter; Judge Dennis Davis, head of the Davis Tax Committee; And Keith Engel, the Chief Executive of SA Institute of Tax Professionals.

Government and ANC ideology are a perpetual constraint on business. Take mining for example, the flywheel of this economy. Electricity is the number one issue. The Mining Charter, transport and exploration are second-order issues. Instead of acting, we score more own goals. Against this backdrop, this felt like a no-nonsense sort of budget. There were no grand analogies with hardy drought resistant aloes or harking back to Manuel’s plums. There was also no mention of Eskom’s debt. But in the main, a budget that delivers reduced bond issuance, some small tax relief as opposed to the feared tax increases, and offers some more detail on PPPs and broader reorientation of government spending to more productive areas with higher fiscal multipliers, should be welcomed. Michael Avery speaks to Annabel Bishop, Investec Chief Economist; Peter Attard-Montalto, head of capital markets research at Intellidex; And Keith Engel, the Chief Executive of SA Institute of Tax Professionals; about the good the bad and the ugly of the 2021 Budget.
