POPULARITY
There have always been attempts by the Empire to subjugate Christianity for its own purposes, but there is something new about the most recent attempts to co-opt the name of Christ to serve political purposes. Recently, JD Vance appealed to Thomas Aquinas' concept of ordo Amoris—“rightly ordered love”—to make his case that what this administration is doing is, in fact, not only moral, but Christian. Joy, Jin, and Bret are joined again by Sandy Richter to consider—What is our prophetic work here?
The Micah Mobilizers are joined by special guest Sandy Richter, an Anglican priest and Micah Group alum, as they reflect on the prophetic witness of Bishop Budde, who called for mercy at the National Prayer Breakfast last month and was met with anger and hate from many Christians. In these tumultuous times, the most powerful prophetic work we can do is to live out Christlike qualities.

My brilliant and beautiful friend Sandy is on AoH for the third time with this episode, making her the most interviewed (and also the most listened-to) of our guests. We love Sandy Richter! This time, she is talking about Deborah the prophet, subject of a newly released study in the Epic of Eden series. Professor at Westmont College, Dr. Richter is an OT scholar and an epic (pun intended) story-teller. You'll love this episode!
Deborah, a prominent figure in the book of Judges, challenges the perception that women are only in the text because there are no good men available. In a male-dominated society, Deborah's leadership and influence as a judge for over 40 years is exceptional. She is one of the few judges in the Old Testament who is also titled as a prophet, highlighting her significant role in shaping the nation of Israel. Deborah's title as a mother in Israel further emphasizes the importance of motherhood, a role often marginalized in society. In this conversation, Sandy Richter discusses the character of Deborah in the book of Judges and her role as a prophet and judge in ancient Israel. Sandy highlights the significance of Deborah's leadership and the connections between her ministry and that of other biblical figures like Samuel and Moses. She also addresses the issue of women in ministry and challenges the cultural norms and biases that limit their roles. Sandy encourages both men and women to recognize and embrace their gifts and to be courageous in answering the call of the Holy Spirit. Noah has a conversation with Dr. Sandra Richter on her new Bible study Deborah: Unlikely Heroes and the Book of Judges. In the podcast interview, Sandy talks through difficult stumbling blocks to approaching the Old Testament like violence and sexism. She gives great insight into why and how to read the Old Testament and apply it to our lives as new covenant Christians, with a focus on the unique person of Deborah. Sandy Richter is the Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA. Richter earned her PhD in Hebrew Bible from Harvard University and her MA in Theological Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She is the author of The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament (IVP) and the much-loved series of video Bible study curriculums that have grown from that project. She has taught at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wesley Biblical Seminary, and Wheaton College. As her many students will tell you, Sandy's particular gift is bringing the real people and real places of the biblical narrative to life. Richter is a member of the New International Version (NIV) Translation Committee, she has spent many years bringing student groups to Israel to study historical geography and field archaeology, and in her technical work often writes on the intersections between Syro-Palestinian archaeology, linguistics and Bible. She is the author of the brand new Bible study, Deborah: Unlikely Heroes and the Book of Judges, which includes an 8-Session Video Bible Study Part of the Epic of Eden Curriculum Series. If you didn't know, the Old Testament has some pretty crazy stories. One of the challenges in understanding ancient texts like Ruth is the vast cultural gap between then and now. Ruth unfolds against the backdrop of the time of the judges, a period marked by moral decline and spiritual turbulence in Israel. In this episode, Whit and Casey take a deep dive into the cultural, historical, and biblical context of the story. Dr. Sandy Richter (PhD Harvard) is the real life Indiana Jones. She's an Ancient Near Eastern linguist and archaeologist. She can read original Old Testament Hebrew better than most of us read English, which is probably why she's one of the few women on the NIV Bible Translation Committee. In Part 5 of our Godbreathed interview series, Evan Wickham asks Dr. Richter how she stumbled from lost to believer to leading voice in biblical scholarship. Also, does the Bible demean women and promote slavery (fun fact: she disagrees with Nijay Gupta's answer to this Q from a few episodes ago in this series)? What parts of the Bible still keep Sandy up at night? And most importantly, how does Jesus encounter Sandy through the scriptures?

Bishop Barron launched a whole bunch of us watching Mrs. Davis. I asked what people thought about it on Twitter and got a lot of interesting responses. Apparently, I was not alone in my surprise and discomfort with the show. There is a lot to talk about with respect to the show. My first attempt to do some commentary on material owned by a major studio was a failure making this a strange non-video. Many people find themselves dealing with high levels of stress and anxiety in their daily lives. However, there are plenty of simple strategies to help regulate these emotions. In this episode of Mind Your Mind, host Tim Unsinn talks with therapist Sandy Richter about various coping exercises to help you regulate and calm yourself, including breathing and movement exercises for both children and adults.
Today's episode is a very raw conversation about Sex and Theology with Josh Ryan Butler, Dr. Sandy Richter, and Brenna Blain. Josh Ryan Butler is pastor of Redemption Tempe in Arizona, the author of Beautiful Union (and a few other books). Dr. Sandy Richter is currently the The Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont college and the author of many books including one of my favorite books on the Old Testament, The Epic of Eden. Sandy has an MDiv from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and a PhD from Harvard University. When looking at Brenna Blain you might not guess that she works in ministry, with a body adorned in tattoos and piercings she doesnt fit the evangelical look many have grown up with, but that's just Brenna. Her ministry focus is on providing resources for churches, ministries and individuals who are seeking to find God in the midst of difficult topics and hard conversations. Whether she's teaching at conferences, producing podcasts or writing, you will find Brenna inviting you to pursue Biblical truth with compassion and conviction. Brenna obtained her BA in Theology and Biblical Studies from Multnomah University in Portland, Oregon and has lived in the PNW her entire life. Her greatest joys are her two sons and her husband Austin. While she speaks on many topics, Brenna is especially passionate about God's involvement in our pain and personal struggles including mental illness, same sex attraction and abuse. In this podcast conversation, Brenna shares her story about her journey with abuse, mental health challenges, questions around her sexuality, and how her hope in Christ has remained constant in the midst of many challenges. Today let's ask the question: What does the Bible say about sexual abuse? *TRIGGER WARNING* As the title states, this podcast episode discusses topics like sexual abuse. Please take caution when listening. Join me today as I take look at what the Bible says about sexual abuse. What are those weird laws in Deuteronomy about rape? Is God a cruel monster who forces people to marry their sexual abusers? What do the book of Proverbs and the Psalms say about injustice? What does Jesus say about abuse? I share some of my thoughts and opinions, but my goal is not to tell you what you believe. Instead, I encourage you to ask why you believe what you do and search scripture deeply for the answers. Dr. Sandy Richter is one of my favorite--and one of the most provocative--biblical scholars, and she comes back on Theology in the Raw for the second time in 10 months to help us think through this important question: should Christian care for the environment? The answer, of course--if you read the Bible--is yes. But why are so many Christians resistant to this question? (Pssst...it’s because we’re often shaped more by American political tribal identities than the actual Bible.) We also wrestle with questions like: What age will we be in the resurrection? Will animals be resurrected in the new creation? And why won’t there be marriage in the resurrection? Internationally known for her work on Deuteronomy and the Deuteronomistic History, Dr. Richter brings the Old Testament to life by exploring the real people and real places from which it comes. Dr. Richter is a graduate of Valley Forge University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and earned her doctorate from the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department of Harvard University in Hebrew Bible. A veteran of many years of leading student groups in archaeological excavation and historical geography classes in Israel, she has taught at Asbury Theological Seminary., Wesley Biblical Seminary and Wheaton College. She is recognized among the laity for her The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament and is currently working on a second in that series The Fifth Gospel: A Christian Entry into the Book of Isaiah (IVP Academic). Her current research involves a forthcoming book on environmental theology (IVP) and a commentary on Deuteronomy with Eerdmans. She is also the author of several adult Bible Curriculums with Seedbed. Dr. Sandy Richter is LEGIT!! In this fascinating conversation, Sandy helps us understand the alleged "marry your rapist" law in Deuteronomy 22:28, which has been mistranslated as you'll see. She also walks us through the "marry your conquered enemy's wife" allowance in Deuteronomy 21. These texts have troubled me for YEARS and have raised questions in my own mind about whether the Old Testament dehumanizes women. Actually, it does the opposite. When you understand it in its own cultural context, you'll see that the Bible actually humanizes women much, much more than we realize.Sandy's awesome book ("The Epic of Eden") that I referenced can be found hereSandra Richter is the Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont College. Richter earned her PhD from Harvard University’s Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department and her MA in Theological Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She has taught at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY, Wesley Biblical Seminary in Jackson, MS and Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. Due to her passion for the "real space and time" of the biblical text, she has spent many of those years directing an Israel Studies program focused on historical geography and field archaeology.Richter is best known in the Academy for her work on the “name theology” of the Deuteronomistic History and a socio-historical assessment of the economic backdrop of the Book of Deuteronomy (The Deuteronomistic History and the Name Theology: lešakken šemo šam in the Bible and the ANE [BZAW 318, 2002]; “The Place of the Name in Deuteronomy” [VT 57, 2007], “Placing the Name, Pushing the Paradigm: A Decade with the Deuteronomistic Name Formula” in Deuteronomy in the Pentateuch, Hexateuch, and the Deuteronomistic History [FAT 56; Mohr Siebeck, 2012]; “The Question of Provenance and the Economics of Deuteronomy”" JSOT [2017]; “What’s Money Got to Do With It?
