In this conversation with Richard Beck, author of The Book of Love, we explore what it actually means to read Scripture through the hermeneutic of love. Richard helps us see that we have to reckon with our attachment to God - whether we actually believe he's for us - because that fear or security shapes everything about how we read. We get into the violent texts of the Old Testament, why both conservatives and progressives have their own blind spots, how the Bible raises hard questions, and what seeing the cross through a hermeneutic of love looks like.Richard Beck is professor of psychology at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, where he also lives. He is a popular blogger and speaker and the author of several books, most recently The Shape of Joy and The Book of Love. His published research also covers topics as diverse as the psychology of profanity and why Christian bookstore art is so bad. Beck leads a Bible study each week for inmates at a maximum-security prison.Richard's Book:The Book of LoveRichard's Recommendations:What it Means to be ProtestantConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. In this message, Pastor Kory takes an honest look at the violence found in the Old Testament and why it troubles many Christians today. He explains why simple answers don't work and explores how history, culture, and storytelling shape these passages. Most importantly, he urges listeners to read the Bible through the life and teachings of Jesus, approaching hard texts with humility, faith, and trust that God's mercy is greater than our understanding.
In this episode I discuss how Christians need to think critically about collateral damage in war. Inspired by the recent outbreak of war in Iran, in which many believers flippantly dismiss the deaths of innocent noncombatants, including little girls, there is no Biblical, ethical, or theological justification for collateral damage. I explain how my views on this issue developed over time and how Christians must embrace the post-national identity of Abraham's family and the obvious consequences of Genesis 1:26-28 in which all humans are created in God's image and likeness. Being born on the wrong side of an imaginary line doesn't change that reality. I talk about the problems of just war theory with respect to modern warfare, the hypocrisy of Americans who will justify the death of foreign women and children while claiming we must always defend American women and children, the problem of war in the Old Testament, and how Christians must be morally and intellectually consistent, always defending the rights and value of all human life. In short, there is no Christian justification for collateral damage. Does the God of the Old Testament seem different in the New Testament? A caller asked me about this apparent shift from violence to mercy. Is God having a personality crisis? And what about evil and disasters – is God hurling calamities our way?God's character is unchanging, but there's been a radical change in covenants. As believers today, we're living under a better deal with better promises. No more worrying about losing the Holy Spirit or offering endless sacrifices. The Gospel offers us a life of grace and freedom.Dive into this video and transform your understanding of God's goodness. Yes, He's the same yesterday, today, and forever, but the New Covenant changes everything! We hope you enjoyed this episode. Tension exists between God's enemy-embracing love demonstrated by Jesus on the cross and gruesome Old Testament stories where God commands or commits horrendous violence. But just like Jesus bears our ugly sin and makes the cross beautiful, God bears our ugly stories about him in the beauty of his humble cross-like character.
SummaryChad Gross interviews Dr. Christopher Cloos about the challenging Old Testament violence texts and his recent debate with theologian Randal Rauser. They explore the complexities of interpreting these texts, the role of moral intuition, and the contrasting views of covenant virtue ethics and providential errancy theory. The conversation delves into how moral intuitions can inform biblical interpretation while also addressing the potential pitfalls of subjectivity in understanding scripture. They explore how moral intuition can be used to interpret scripture, the implications of difficult passages, and the importance of engaging with differing views charitably. The conversation also highlights resources for further learning in this area.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Apologetics and Old Testament Violence03:02 Dr. Cloos' Background and Interest in Old Testament Texts06:06 Debate Overview: Rauser vs. Cloos on Biblical Violence08:47 Understanding Moral Intuition in Biblical Interpretation11:55 Covenant Virtue Ethics vs. Providential Errancy Theory14:54 The Role of Moral Intuition in Exegesis17:53 Concerns About Subjectivity in Interpretation20:50 Using Jesus as a Tool for Interpretation25:58 Epistemic Circularity and Moral Intuition32:28 Covenant Virtue Ethics and Difficult Texts40:02 The Role of Hyperbole in Ancient Texts48:10 Engaging with Different Views Charitably53:42 Resources for Further Learning================================We appreciate your feedback. If you're on TWITTER, you can follow Chad @TBapologetics.You can follow Brian @TheBrianAutenAnd of course, you can follow @Apologetics315If you have a question or comment for the podcast, record it and send it our way using www.speakpipe.com/Apologetics315 or you can email us at podcast@apologetics315.com
In this episode I talk with Dr. Jordan Ballard, Assistant Professor at the John W. Wralings School of Divinity at Liberty University and adjunct professor at Calvary University. His doctoral thesis was entitled The Kindness and Severity of God: A Defense of the Conquest of Canaan, which explores the conquest narratives in Joshua 1-12. We will be discussing the problem of Old Testament violence and how to think about it from a Christian perspective. We situate the conquest narratives in the context of Old Testament theology more generally, which includes God's plan to redeem creation, and the narrative context of the book of Joshua. We discuss God's unique prerogative to make decisions about human life, Canaanite evil and Israel's covenant, and the apparent discrepancy between the presentation of God's character in the Old and New Testaments. This is an excellent primer for anyone concerned about problem of violence in the Old Testament and how Christians should reckon with it. How would you help a believer who is involved in sexual immorality? Do we see God immediately when we die or do we have to wait? How is God always the same but then the Old Testament is filled with such violence? Does God bring disaster upon us? I feel so condemned because of my failed marriage and my past. What can I do?

How do we reconcile Old Testament violence with the message of Jesus today? What does James 2 mean when it says three times that we are “justified by works”? (We can't ignore the presence of this phrase, and we must wrestle with it.) Why does James 5 say we will come under judgment if we don't keep our word? Aren't Christians free from God's judgment?

Noah has a conversation with Dr. Sandra Richter on her new Bible study Deborah: Unlikely Heroes and the Book of Judges. In the podcast interview, Sandy talks through difficult stumbling blocks to approaching the Old Testament like violence and sexism. She gives great insight into why and how to read the Old Testament and apply it to our lives as new covenant Christians, with a focus on the unique person of Deborah. Sandy Richter is the Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA. Richter earned her PhD in Hebrew Bible from Harvard University and her MA in Theological Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She is the author of The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament (IVP) and the much-loved series of video Bible study curriculums that have grown from that project. She has taught at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wesley Biblical Seminary, and Wheaton College. As her many students will tell you, Sandy's particular gift is bringing the real people and real places of the biblical narrative to life. Richter is a member of the New International Version (NIV) Translation Committee, she has spent many years bringing student groups to Israel to study historical geography and field archaeology, and in her technical work often writes on the intersections between Syro-Palestinian archaeology, linguistics and Bible. She is the author of the brand new Bible study, Deborah: Unlikely Heroes and the Book of Judges, which includes an 8-Session Video Bible Study Part of the Epic of Eden Curriculum Series. Sermon on the Mount Q+R 3 (E25) – What does Jesus mean when he describes people entering the Kingdom of the skies? Are the promises in the Beatitudes possible now, or do we need to wait for the new creation? How did Jesus respond to other perspectives on how to treat our enemies? How do we reconcile Jesus' teachings on creative nonviolence with violence in the Old Testament narratives? Why does Jesus tell his followers to be perfect when the Bible repeatedly mentions that all humans fail? Does God relish blood, sacrifice and violence?
What does it mean to say that the Bible is inspired? Conservative scholars and pastors have struggled for years to prove that the Bible is without errors... our guest this week thinks this is a fool's errand. This week, Dr. Greg Boyd joins the conversation to help us rethink what it means to say the Bible is inspired. What if God inspired the Bible's contradictions to function as assets and not problems? Perhaps we should embrace the mistakes and contradictions in Scripture, because they show that God chose to use fallible humans to communicate timeless truth... enjoy! Teologi ja harhaopettaja Markus Finnilä vastailee neljään hänelle esitettyihin kysymykseen, jotka liittyvät Raamatun kummallisuuksiin. 00:00 Onko Raamattu totta? Joosuan kirjasta eteenpäin Raamatun tarinan suuret päälinjat ovat sellaisia, joille historiantutkimus antaa tukea. Yksittäisistä kertomuksista on vaikea sanoa. Jeesuksen seuraajien keskuudessa eri kansojen välisten raja-aitojen on taas tarkoitus kaatua. Mainittu kirjallisuus: Gregory A. Greg Boyd's new 2-volume book The Crucifixion Of The Warrior God is a new theological approach to understanding Old Testament violence and warfare through the cross of Christ. Greg engages in the first of two shows with theologian Paul Copan who holds to a "synthesis" view of how to understand OT violence and disagrees with Greg's theology. In responding to the the troubling question of genocidal violence in the Old Testament and its alleged divine endorsement, we really only have three options:1. We can question the morality of God.2. We can question the immutability of God.3. We can question how we read Scripture.
