On Episode 180 of the Ballislife In The Paint Show, hosts Ronnie Flores, Ani Umana and Chelsea Hopkins go hard on the one-year plan that was hatched for the late, great Kobe Bryant to turn pro out of high school with special guest Gary Charles, who was part of the small circle that knew of the plans for the 17-year wunderkind from Lower Merion High School (Ardmore, Pa.). Before bringing on Gary Charles for his exclusive and unique insight on the plan to get Bryant to the L.A. Lakers via a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, the ITP Crew give their instant reaction to the Super Bowl (and Usher's halftime performance) and dish on comments from WNBA great Sheryl Swoopes on Iowa's Caitlin Clark regarding her adjustment once she gets to the W. Was Swoopes on point, out of line or partially correct? Chelsea goes in. Charles then spends 40 minutes breaking down the plan to get Kobe from Lower Merion to the NBA, even though he was a wing guard and academically eligible for any college in the country. That was unheard of at the time. Charles goes "In The Paint" on meeting Kobe through his father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, what Kobe was like as a rising junior at ABCD Camp, the keys to hatching the plan for him to turn pro, and the occurrences that could have foiled Team Bryant's plan to keep him from Nike and keep other NBA teams drafting higher than Charlotte from realizing he should be their pick. What would have happened in Lower Merion would have traveled to Los Angeles for a MLK Showcase game vs. Schea Cotton and St John Bosco? Why taking R & B singer Brandy to the prom was potentially worrisome? What if Tim Thomas would have went straight pro out of high school instead of going to Villanova? What if the New Jersey Nets would have went for Kobe at No. 8 instead of Kerry Kittles? Charles, a longtime grassroots basketball coach and event director, also gives some insight on a Plan B if the Charlotte move didn't happen and what transpired leading up to draft day. The ITP crew then close this special episode with their reactions to the interview and some media references helpful to learn more background information on Kobe's unique path. Kobe's prep-to-pro journey hasn't been told in this manner, so make sure to tune in to Episode 180 from start to finish! Prepare for inspiration with Schea Cotton! Schea Cotton is a former professional American basketball player, current player development coach, and keynote speaker. He is regarded as perhaps the greatest high school basketball player of all time mentioned in the same conversations as legendary players such as LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. In just his sophomore season Schea led Mater Dei High School to a 36 to 1 record as well as to the California State Championship. That same year he was named Cal High Sports Division One Player of the Year, the only sophomore ever to be awarded that honor as a 10th grader. The following season, despite only playing 11 games due to a hand injury, Schea was named a Parade First Team All-American, the highest possible honor for a high school basketball player. Due to a series of unfortunate events, Shay's college career was delayed and despite being one of the most heavily followed and recruited high school basketball players of all time, never played in the NBA. In this 2-part episode, we discuss: -How hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard -Why the greatest of players often come from the humblest of beginnings -What happens when you put in the work that others don't -How to deal with unexpected obstacles -The importance of acknowledging both your weakness and strengths And so much more. Schea's story will inspire you, encourage you, and pull you even closer to living the life you were born to live ... don't miss it. Sometimes the most impressive and admirable basketball journeys don’t have the fairy tale script of making it to the NBA. How about leaving your dream school that is nationally ranked for a Mid-Major to find your own way? Or moving country to country (4 in two months) to find the right basketball situation then eventually earning the title of a champion? His path in hoops may seem like a bumpy ride but to us it’s the ultimate success story of never giving up, swallowing your pride for happiness, taking control of your destiny and hey… champion is champion right?Travis Reed was a standout player from the Los Angeles area during an incredible era of hoops. LA was a hotbed producing players like Paul Pierce, Baron Davis, Schea Cotton, Corey Benjamin, the Collins twins, Tobey Bailey, and many more. Reed chose to play for his dream school UCLA. Those UCLA teams included teammates such as Baron Davis, Matt Barnes, Earl Watson, Dan Gadzuric, Toby Bailey, JR Henderson, Jerome Moiso, and other big name players. After two seasons, Reed transferred to Long Beach State to make a name for himself. His success led him to a decorated career overseas that included a few league MVPs and being crowned a champion. It was a joy having Travis on the show with us. We are blessed that he shared his story because he has had such a unique career and we are thrilled for you all to learn about it. You will really get a better understanding of the what players go through transferring schools and playing ball overseas. Travis also has his own podcast called "Travis Reed-A Basketball Life”. What you hear on this episode is a very small sample size of what you will hear on his podcast so be sure to check it out if you love Travis Reed as much as we do! Thank you Travis Reed! You can find his podcast on I-Heart Radio, Spotify, or any main source for Podcasts.

When I was 15 I went to the Boston Shootout and saw a kid my age, that resembled a man, dominating against guys that were 2-3 years older than him. And they were already headed to play at big time colleges. The Manchild’s name was Schea Cotton. That was the day I realized I had no future playing basketball. From that point on, I followed his career. I even had some of his pictures from Slam Magazine on my wall next to posters of Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and Reggie Lewis. Schea Cotton was the best high school player in the country in 1995 and was destined for NBA greatness. But things didn't exactly go as planned and he never played a game in the NBA. Ron Artest called him, “Lebron James before there ever was a Lebron James...” He once dunked on Kevin Garnett 3 times in an AAU game and finished the game with 38 points. KG was a senior. Schea was only a sophomore. If they only had YouTube or social media back then. Needless to say, a series of unfortunate events and outside influences derailed his NBA dreams. He did go on to play 10+ years overseas and he is currently doing a lot of work in the community in his hometown of Long Beach, CA. Mentoring, motivational speaking and player development consume him these days. He also has a documentary coming out called Manchild: The Schea Cotton Story.
On Thanksgiving Eve I linked up with one of my closest friends, Mike Simmons aka Smooth aka Folio Sims aka Carpaccio. Mike runs a basketball program in Miami called Pro Day Academy where he specializes in player development. He’s as good as anybody in the game at what he does. We talked about his struggles growing up in South Central LA and how that has influenced him as a father. We talked about our love for basketball and how it took him from the hood to running the point for the University of Miami, next to a couple of future NBA players. And of course I had to ask him about his days as a ladies man on campus at The U. Palmolive, beef carpaccio, incense, hors d'oeuvres, Schea Cotton, & more.

There are countless stories of top high school players that never end up making it to the NBA. In these situations, all the rankings, media attention and recruiting end up being wrong. With the amount of emphasis some players and their parents currently put on exposure and rankings at a young age, the stories of high school stars that don’t make the NBA should act as a cautionary tale. None of these stories quite hit home like the story of Schea Cotton.
