Upper West Side of Manhattan, Henry Hillman, Feedback for Alana and me concerning Milo's name in public, Constant challenge is common conceptions of what grief looks like and how it evolves, Tremendous variation in how people grieve, Stages of grief or scientific formula for grief is very upsetting, as no such formula exists, Different reactions from different people in our community, For some hearing a child's name is lovely, while for others it sounds awful, Karen Goodman, so smart and thoughtful, provides her daughter Ashley's name, Donna Dunkelman, also so smart and thoughtful, feels that providing her son's name would be horrifying, The idea of a formula is concocted to make people feel "better", but is really more of a wish, Matters evolve but our DNA has been reordered and we will never be the same, Matters will evolve unpredictably, Alana and I are aligned, Our brains want answers (like with The Sopranos), I will be different in three years, but I'll never be the same person I was, The pain will not be "solved" or mitigated, Everyone's experience is different, Tyson Chandler, 2016 or 2017 Christmas break vacation in Phoenix, Pat, Julie, Hannah, and James, Nantucket and Phoenix, Phoenix Suns basketball game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Very bad Phoenix Suns team, Devin Booker was on the team, So many of us at the game were big sports fans, but there was a play at the end of the game that was surprising to us, Suns down 1 and inbounded to Tyson Chandler for an alley-oop, Goran Dragic or Devin Booker may have inbounded, Inbounds pass was in the cylinder when caught, We did not now whether the basket should count, We learned a new rule, Suns ran a similar play against the LA Clippers in the playoffs a few years later, Deandre Ayton scored that time, Milo loved the game and the puzzle, We all learned something

The Charlotte Bobcats existed for 10 seasons and racked up a grand total of zero playoff wins. The pinnacle of the franchise came in 2009/10, when the Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace-led Bobcats made the playoffs and ranked first in defense. Stephen Jackson arrived in Charlotte nine games into the 2009/10 season after being traded from Golden State. Stak was just two years removed from making history with the 2007 We Believe Warriors. That Warriors core - featuring Baron Davis, Matt Barnes, Jason Richardson and Al Harrington - dismantled quickly following their magical run. By 2009, Captain Jack was the lone sailor left, and he wasn't happy. He publicly requested a trade in the summer of 2009 and was shipped off to the Bobcats in December. Directly following the trade, reporters asked Bobcats head coach Larry Brown if he was worried about Jackson joining his locker room. Stak had a bad reputation following the Malice at the Palace, and more recently from a sideline blow-up with his old Warriors coach, Don Nelson. But Brown was not worried at all. Jackson, he said, shared certain qualities with his former student, Allen Iverson. "I can deal with (high-maintenance) kids. All you have to do is be straight with them,' Brown said. ‘After six years with Allen (Iverson in Philadelphia), I don't look at anybody as a challenge. (Jackson) wants to play and he's a competitor. Guys like that you can make work in your locker room." With Jackson, Wallace, Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw, the Bobcats won a franchise-high 44 games and made the playoffs for the first time in their history. Despite getting swept in the first round, this 2010 season is a source of great pride for Jackson. Catch new episodes of Forgotten Seasons every Wednesday. Learn more about your ad choices. BKE S3 E11 DJ Ace, (@DJAceNBA on X), NBA Film Analyst for Knicks Film School and @CraftNBA talks with Joe Yolk (@JoeYo1k on all socials) about the In-season Tournament, what fans need to learn about how the NBA game works, and about 4 Knicks specifically. RJ Barrett starting off shooting hot before he missed 3 games with a migraine and his struggles since then. What did he change over the past year in his shot that led to the hot start and his over 80% free throw shooting, and can he get back from his current struggles? What Mitchell Robinson is doing defensively that has made him better as a Knicks Center than Defensive Player of the Year Tyson Chandler was, and why it is still not good enough to be considered the best defensive center this year with the likes of Rudy Gobert, Bam Adebayo, and Anthony Davis Josh Hart struggling in his new role and his feel for the game and finding his way Quentin Grimes needs to remain in the starting lineup even with his bad offensive performance thus far
5:05-6:08: “The second pleasant surprise and the second I said was that Dereck Lively needs to become the second coming of Tyson Chandler. Again, he's not Tyson Chandler. However, he looks incredible. He looks so good that you actually see some of the deficiencies of not having more support in the big area. … But when Lively is healthy and when he's in and when he's not in foul trouble, they look pretty awesome. And then the third and sort of final one is some of these role players, they look incredible too. Grant Williams has been Steady Eddie for us, and he's not only a good vibes guy on the bench, which every team needs; he is amazing from the 3-point line. He's just a little bit more versatile than role players we've had in the past and same with Derrick Jones Jr. Derrick Jones Jr., who is an NBA journeyman, I can't recall him looking this good, really ever.” 8:28-8:47: “If they're playing a team, say the Wolves or someone like that, [they have] the ability to be able to speed up but then also grind the game to a halt and make it a half-court contest. I think Dallas has the versatility, offensively, to play both ways.” 12:55-13:25: “In terms of bringing in these huge stars, I'm sorry, the NBA is too good, and you have to have a training camp and you have to learn how to play together. And those are the positive signs we're seeing from Luka and Kyrie and why I feel really good about this team, even with the defensive woes. It's simply because they look like a team that has an identity, a philosophy, schemes. If you're a team with that in place, you have a leg up on a bunch of other teams.” 18:12-18:29: “When you watched [Doncic] last season, you literally had the thought, ‘This is not sustainable.' As great as he is, it is not sustainable to watch this guy control the entirety of every single possession, and it [ultimately] played out exactly how we thought.” 24:33-24:48: “Now, in my head, Luka has to show that he is clearly better than Jokic to win the MVP, and I don't know if he'll do that. But it's funny that our brains do that, all because Jokic has a ring.” 26:39-28:17: “Being a big next to Luka, you just have a very specific job…and he's excelling like crazy at that. … If I am, say, playing the Mavericks in the playoffs and I am scouting, the very first thing, the literal No. 1 agenda item is ‘get Dereck Lively in foul trouble.'” 39:19-39:30: “In terms of growth from year over year, it's been nice seeing them just handle these bad opponents because they didn't. I can tell you, ‘They did not do that in the past.'”

Bobby Ray Jones Jr. grew up in a two-parent household in Compton, CA. In this episode, I talk with him about how home, sports, academics, and being an introvert all helped keep him busy and out of trouble in his youth. Bobby excelled first in track, then in basketball. At the legendary Dominguez High School, he overlapped three years with Tyson Chandler. During Bobby's time, Dominguez won three state titles and, in 2000, the national championship. It was there that he first honed his skills on defense and as a team player; he went on to play for coach and mentor Lorenzo Romar at the University of Washington. He shares about his experience being drafted into the NBA, and we talk about travel and his years playing professionally in Italy. Finally, he talks about the value and importance of giving back to his community. Bobby is now a full-time yoga practitioner and teaches yoga to kids in his hometown.https://www.bobbyrayjonesjr.com

On April 26, 2021, Jonathan Tjarks tweeted: “There's no easy way to say this. I've been diagnosed with cancer. The doctors aren't entirely sure what kind it is, but they think it is one of two kinds of sarcomas. I've already begun chemotherapy. Please keep me, my wife, and our one-year-old son in your prayers.” He then wrote an article for The Ringer titled “The Long Night of the Soul” explaining where his head and heart were at as he underwent chemo. By this time, Jonathan had been an NBA writer for The Ringer for a couple of years. He began his sportswriting career working for his high school and college newspapers. After writing for a political news website, Jonathan realized he'd rather be writing about sports, and so started a basketball blog. Jonathan also contributed to Mavs Moneyball and eventually earned a press credential that helped him cover his hometown Dallas Mavericks in even greater depth. After years of taking freelance writing gigs, Jonathan's passionate and insightful stories caught the eye of editors at The Ringer, who offered him a staff writer position. As the site grew its podcasts, Jonathan started co-hosting Upside High with fellow scribe Kyle Mann. In this episode, Jonathan shares: The unorthodox story of how he found GodWhy faith and family have provided a firm foundation during his cancer treatmentHow Juwan Howard reacted when he swiped players' popcorn in the American Airlines Arena visitors' locker room Why Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, and Tyson Chandler were perfect complements to Dirk Nowitzki on the Mavs' 2011 NBA title team Why the Mavs were actually better off after letting Steve Nash get awayWhat he sees as the future of sports journalism despite major changes due to COVIDTo keep up with Jonathan, follow him on Twitter, listen to his Upside High podcast with Kyle Mann, and read his articles for The Ringer.

Our listeners have enjoyed our What If series here on the podcast, so we're back with another one that could have changed everything in the Ryan McDonough era. What if LaMarcus Aldridge signs a four-year max contract with the Suns in 2015?The plan for Phoenix was to sign Tyson Chandler alongside Aldridge, but a last-minute change led him to San Antonio. If that didn't happen, does the Aldridge/Chandler frontcourt even survive in the modern NBA?Also, how would the 2015 roster look? Is it actually a playoff team? Not only would Aldridge's arrival bring instant change, but it likely leads to some further roster reconstruction down the line. Does Devin Booker's development slow due to Aldridge?Follow on Twitter: @LockedOnPHXSuns, @esidery, @BrendonKleen14Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
