Aymann Ismail (Slate Magazine staff writer) sat down with Bridget for an interview on January 6th 2022, coincidentally, Ismail had been in D.C. on January 6th, 2021, so inevitably their conversation covers the events of that day, including Aymann's sense of the mood of the crowd, what made it different from other Trump rallies, and why many different things can all be true at once about the Capitol riot. They also discuss Aymann's trip to Egypt during the Arab Spring and his coverage of the riots in Minneapolis in 2020, amidst a broader conversation about platforming dangerous ideas & ideologies, 9/11, the Patriot Act and the repercussions within the Muslim community in New York City, the polarization of our two political parties, people who view political violence as an acceptable means of affecting change, Gerrymandering, voter's rights, and they wrap it all up with the biggest mistakes Aymann made as a new father. Be sure to check out Aymann's podcast Scoot Over, a series of conversations about how to build a more inclusive world and what is standing in our way.

As the mother of 3 adopted children (two with Down syndrome), Heather Avis has a passion to shout the God-Given worth of every person! She loves celebrating inclusivity and how we are each different and unique. https://contestpearl.com/EYi7Ev2tXbCkAQtOszWD (Enter to win a FREE copy of Heather's New York Times Bestselling Children's book, Different - A Great Thing To Be! )  The contest ends August 11th 2021 at midnight. Episode Discussion PointsFun had yard saling in Southern California How she felt life was so unfair when she and her husband couldn't get pregnant How she was angry and vented to God like a tantruming child, and how He loved her through it all. What her most frustrating moment with God looked like when she was going through the adoption process. Sometimes God gives us gifts that we unwrap and the present isn't what we were hoping for. At those moments we need a shift in perspective, and realize God is the giver of good gifts. How they adopted their daughter with Down Syndrome, heart and lung conditions and were able to have front seats to miracles. When you are blessed with a child with special needs, your life changes, and there is a grieving period for your expectations, but it also opens you up to “the other side of things” where you get to glimpse divinity. When asked, “How do you do that?” Heather answered, “You do the thing you have to do for your kid,” whether it be open heart surgery or whatever else they are dealing with. The stories of adopting her three children, two with Down Syndrome and congenital heart defects, and one typical child. How her perspective on adoption has changed (For more details see separate section below). We need to shift the narrative from adoptive parents being the heroes to they are just a part of the triad along with birth families (where possible) and the child being adopted. Starting her group, “The Lucky Few” as a voice for parents of Down Syndrome children. Writing her books, https://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Few-Finding-Unlikely-Places/dp/0310345464 (“The Lucky Few,”) and https://www.amazon.com/Scoot-Over-Make-Some-Room/dp/0310354838/ (“Scoot Over and Make Some Room.”) Her dream of writing a children's book, and how that came to be her New York Times Bestselling book, https://www.amazon.com/Different-Great-Thing-Heather-Avis/dp/0593232658 (“Different - A Great Thing to Be!”) We also had a great discussion on how we promote inclusivity from the time people are young. Heather's favorite Bible verse is: 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18, “Rejoice always. Pray continually. Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” For Heather this means she can rejoice and pray always. God is God—period! She can trust in Him and His plan no matter what. Heather's Perspective on AdoptionHeather's perspective on adoption has changed from her getting a baby to having different goals when a child is born. This is how she thinks people should look at adoption: Keeping families intact by giving birth families support; Look at kinship adoption Look at adoption within their same race. Interracial adoption ALL with the idea of what is best for the child and that there will always be a birth family who is important to the child who are not a threat. Heather and Josh Avis (@theluckyfewofficial) here! This week, we're answering a question that we get asked a whole lot! “How has having two kids with Down Syndrome created our family norm?” We should probably start by saying that we've never really been a family with “norms.” The two of us moved to Hawaii just weeks after getting married at the ages of 20 and 23. A few years later, we came back to California and adopted three kids (not all at once, thank goodness!). Macyn is 11 with Down Syndrome, Truly is 8, and August is 5 with Down Syndrome. Our free spirited nature definitely helped us adjust to the rollercoaster of these unique adoptions, but they still came with plenty of uncertainties. How would our extended family react to having someone with Down Syndrome in the family? How would having an older and younger sibling with Down Syndrome affect our middle daughter, Truly? How would we ever create “normalcy” out of this? One thing we do know for certain is that having two children with Down Syndrome has allowed us to know the fullness of humanity and we consider ourselves very, very lucky (hence our name, The Lucky Few!). Clearly, we have A LOT to cover today. So friends, join us for a chat about our 17 years of marriage, our family vacation in Hawaii, and how Truly (and all of us!) have been made better because of Down Syndrome. ___ Keep up with the Avis's on Instagram and their website!
