Why is Carter considered America's first neoliberal president? How did his once-controversial foreign policy decisions come to be seen as visionary? What led to the Carter administration's repeated setbacks in addressing the energy crisis and inflation? What role did this Southern politician play as the Democratic Party shifted from the New Deal Coalition to neoliberalism? Join us as we reassess this often oversimplified and misunderstood American president. On December 29, 2024, James Earl Carter, Jr. -- who began his career as a modest peanut farmer before becoming the 39th President of the United States -- died at his family home in Georgia at the age of 100. Although his administration was derailed by the Iran Hostage Crisis and a troubled economy at home, his post-presidential life set the standard for leading a life guided by character, integrity, humanitarianism, and basic decency. In 1979, as Christmas approached, the United States Embassy in Tehran held more than fifty American hostages, who had been seized when revolutionaries stormed the embassy. No one from the U.S. had been able to have contact with them. The Reverend M. William Howard, Jr., was the president of the National Council of Churches at the time, and when he received a telegram from the Revolutionary Council, inviting him to perform Christmas services for the hostages, he jumped at the opportunity. In America, “we had a public that was quite riled up,” Reverend Howard reminds his son, The New Yorker Radio Hour's Adam Howard. “Who knows what might have resulted if this issue were not somehow addressed? . . . Might there be an American invasion, an attempt to rescue the hostages in a militaristic way?” Reverend Howard was aware that the gesture had some propaganda value to the Iranian militants, but he saw a chance to lower the tension. Accompanied by another Protestant minister and a Catholic bishop, Howard entered front-page headlines, travelling to Tehran and into the embassy. He gave the captives updates on the N.F.L. playoffs, and they prayed. It was a surreal experience to say the least. “It was in the Iranian hostage crisis that I understood how alone we are, and how powerless we are when other people take control,” Reverend Howard says. “And really it's in that setting that one can develop faith.”This segment originally aired on December 15, 2023.

Walter Leland Cronkite Jr. (November 4, 1916 – July 17, 2009) was an American broadcast journalist who served as anchorman for the CBS Evening News[1] for 19 years, from 1962 to 1981. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was often cited as "the most trusted man in America" after being so named in an opinion poll.[2][3][4] Cronkite received numerous honors including two Peabody Awards, a George Polk Award, an Emmy Award and in 1981 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. Cronkite reported many events from 1937 to 1981, including bombings in World War II; the Nuremberg trials; combat in the Vietnam War;[5] the Dawson's Field hijackings; Watergate; the Iran Hostage Crisis; and the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, civil rights pioneer Martin Luther King Jr., and Beatles musician John Lennon. He was also known for his extensive coverage of the U.S. space program, from Project Mercury to the Moon landings to the Space Shuttle. He was the only non-NASA recipient of an Ambassador of Exploration award.[6] Cronkite is known for his departing catchphrase, "And that's the way it is", followed by the date of the broadcast.[7] PICTURE: By Bernard Gotfryd - This image is available from the United States Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs divisionunder the digital ID gtfy.00866.This tag does not indicate the copyright status of the attached work. Ben Affleck's Argo was a runaway hit in 2012. His highly anticipated follow-up to The Town, it finally won Affleck the respect from his peers that he always deserved, with it earning a Best Picture Oscar, despite the man being shut out as director in a controversial move. Audiences and critics alike raved about the movie, but it wasn't without controversy. Some involved with the original “Canadian Caper” that the film was based on slammed it for various inaccuracies. However, these were largely dismissed as the film set out to be entertainment rather than a documentary, which is fair enough. In this episode of WTF Really Happened to this Movie, we dig into the true story behind Argo, including the truth behind the CIA operative Affleck played, Tony Mendez, who, as the film depicts, cooked up a scheme where he pretended to be scouting locations for a sci-fi pic to rescue hostages in the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1981. We dig into the Canadian and American roles in the caper, as well as the actions of diplomat Ken Taylor. He played a small part in the film but was credited by many (including then-President Jimmy Carter) as the real hero behind the operation. This episode of WTF Really Happened to this Movie is written by Jake Dee, narrated by Steve Seigh and edited by Paul Cooper. Let us know in the comments whether or not you think Argo's inaccuracies are a serious issue or if this is just a regular Hollywood occurrence in the pursuit of entertainment.

Texas Governor and Nixon Administration Treasury Secretary John Connally has emerged in recent days as a possible player in activity that has long been alleged to have gone on between the campaign of Ronald Reagan and the Iranian Government. The rumor of an October surprise has been out there for years but no one could quite ever tie the entire thing together. However, just this year, after President Carter was admitted into Hospice Care, a former Texas Speaker of the House, and well known political player named Bill Barnes, a protege to John Connally, stepped forward with a tale that captivated the nation. That his mentor, John Connally, had traveled around the Middle East and tried to broker a deal between the Islamic militants that were holding our hostages in Tehran and the Reagan Campaign manager who was himself a former spy and would later become the CIA chief Bill Casey. Could it be true? While no evidence exists that ties Ronald Reagan to any of this activity personally, no one seems to be willing to defend Bill Casey. John Connally's name never surfaced in two separate investigations of these allegations. But it is hard not to take Bill Barnes seriously because he is a credible political figure in a way the late Anna Chennault was not when accusations arose about the 1968 election. In this episode, we will look at the life of John Connally, his influence over two United States Presidents, his place in history as a passenger in the car with John F. Kennedy when he was assassinated in Dallas, and finally the embarrassing political situation he found himself in after a disastrous run for the White House in his own right earlier in the 1980 election cycle. Which could explain how a man of such stature could have gotten himself involved in skullduggery like this accusation belies. Did John Connally really attempt to cut a deal with Iranians on behalf of the Reagan campaign? While it sounds improbable, it is a story that has a credible witness and certainly it happened at a moment when a man who had been one of the most influential figures in America had suddenly found himself on his way to political irrelevancy. Election Night 1980. The Iran Hostage Crisis is going on, the economy is struggling, and the ABSCAM scandal has several candidates seeking re-election while either under indictment or after conviction. It is with this back drop that both of our subjects, Representative John Jenrette and President Jimmy Carter, are facing re-election. It did not go well for either of them. In this episode we will let you watch the evening progress as the networks zero in on the ABSCAM Defendants elections for at least some drama because the Carter efforts are fairing so badly. Ronald Reagan will be elected in a landslide and John Jenrette will lose in a surprising squeaker to John Napier. This election is also a treat because it will feature just about everyone , save Lyndon Johnson, we have focused on throughout our podcast run. Jimmy Carter, John Jenrette, Henry Kissinger, Barbara Walters, Frank Reynolds, Ted Koppel, Walter Cronkite, and even Richard Nixon will all be featured at some point through out the night. Finally, the episode will end as former President Gerald Ford is interviewed while Ronald Reagan comes out to address the nation for the first time as President - Elect and the two will talk on live TV. It is a big night for the Republican Party as they win the Presidency and the Senate for the first time in a generation and break the New Deal Coalition that had dominated the nations politics since 1932. Episode 267: On November 4, 1979, Iranian militants attacked the US embassy in Tehran, Iran, taking 66 diplomats and staff members hostage. Remarkably, six diplomats managed to slip away unnoticed. These individuals were Robert Anders, Cora Lijek, Mark Lijek, Joseph Stafford, Kathleen Stafford, and Lee Schatz. Schatz sought refuge at the Swedish embassy, while the others went to the British embassy. However, upon nearing the embassy, they encountered a large crowd of protestors obstructing their path. Consequently, they decided to take shelter at Anders' residence and devise their next steps. After six harrowing days, the six American diplomats sought refuge at the Canadian embassy. The Canadian Ambassador to Iran, Ken Taylor, and his team provided shelter to the American diplomats and false Canadian passports. The Canadian government played a critical role in the mission to rescue them. The then-Canadian Prime Minister, Joe Clark, approved the operation and fully supported Ambassador Taylor and his team. The rescue mission, known as the “Canadian Caper,” involved the creation of a fake movie production company called “Studio Six” and the production of a fake science fiction film called “Argo.” The Canadian embassy staff, along with the American diplomats, managed to escape from Iran using a combination of air travel and ground transportation. In 1980, a prominent Republican sought to sabotage then-President Jimmy Carter's re-election by asking Middle Eastern leaders to get a message to the Iranians; keep the American hostages until after the election and Reagan will give you a better deal. That's according to a New York Times report. Jonathan Alter, author of "His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, A Life," joined Geoff Bennett to discuss. Some Presidents were born to be Presidents - and SOME Presidents were born to be Ex-Presidents! Were it easier to get to the latter without going through the former - but then, would the late 70s have been so late 70s without having had to go through the Jimmy Carter Presidency? The good news is, you need only listen to this episode to imagine the actual Carter Presidency (and the late 1970s) while reveling in the coolness of post-Prez Jimmy. (And with laughs!) Iran faces the US today in the final game of their group stage. It's a win or go home for young Team USA, who earned two draws in their earlier group stage games vs. Wales and England. Off the field, Iran remains under a global spotlight after months of protests against their own regime because of the country's stance on women's rights. This isn't the first time Iran and the US have met on the field during times of intense geopolitical opposition: back in 1998, the Americans lost to Iran and were eliminated from the World Cup, after the previous several decades of tensions between the two nations which saw the Iran Hostage Crisis and American support for Iraq in the Iran-Iraq war. Sam Borden is on the ground in Qatar, and he brings us up to speed on how the tournament's gone for Team USA so far, and explains what's at stake for both sides ahead of the match. For over a year during the Covid Lockdown, Zari was the only person outside of Dawn's house that she spoke to in person. Chats in doorway turned to coffee on the patio - turned to tea at her kitchen table - which eventually became whiskey on the couch. More than once she found myself at 1o'clock in the morning awash - not just in the Makers Mark Zari pours so generously - but in her captivating tales of her life in Iran. Dawn recorded with Zari for a few sessions over two days and what is compiled here focuses primarily on the history of the Iranian Revolution and how it wove through the events of Zari's life to this point. ---EPISODE BREAKDOWN---00:10:00 - After Dawn and Zari bring the listeners up to speed on how they met and grew so close - Dawn begins to give the very early broad strokes of the seeds of the Iranian Revolution, and where Zari was at the time. In 1961, for example, in an unlikely turn of events, Zari finds herself at 15 entering a Catholic School in London - she is Muslim, speaks no English and has never seen a nun. 00:16:30 - At the same time that Zari is in London, the Shah Pahlavi - the divisive and socially progressive King of Iran - is advancing what is known as the White Revolution. This is generally an investment in a modernizing - and particularly Westernizing and secularizing - of Iranian culture. Its most vocal critic is the Ruhollah Khomeini (later the Ayatollah Khomeini) who is eventually sent into exile in Iraq, but continues to remain very present in Iranian dissent. 00:25:24 - When Zari graduates and returns to Iran in 1968, she gets married and has a son - later divorces, amicably- and is beginning her career in education. Not long after, the real build of the revolution begins: The Cinema Rex Fire as well as other violent and deadly events are happening with more regularity and the tide of revolution is beginning to become clearer. 00:44:37 - By November, 1978, the Revolution is building and increasing numbers of people are taking to the streets every week. The Shah makes a series of televised concessions and capitulations which only seem embolden his critics and weaken his position. As allies also begin to falter in their support of the Shah, many begin to see how the return of Khomeini would mean violence and chose to flee. Zari, her parents, and her 7 year-old son got on a crowded flight on Dec. 7th, 1978 and go to London. It is from London that they witness the Revolution take a dark turn. --BREAK-- 00:52:51 - Dawn and Zari begin Part 2 with a clink of whiskey glasses and jumping into some of the ugliest days of the return of the Ayatollah to Iran. Dawn references the story of author, Shirin Ebadi in her book Iran Awakening - in which she relays how it felt on the ground. Ebadi has a very different perspective than Zari because she was a Leftist Revolutionary who was among those in the streets protesting the Shah. She believed the government could be made more representative, and didn't believe a bigger monster lay beyond the cause. 01:01:41 - Zari watched events like the Iran Hostage Crisis (1979-1981) from her new life in New York. Again, the critical timeline aligns with hers and Zari and her son find they are fortunate enough to have secured their passports on the same day that Jimmy Carter revokes all Iranian Visas. 01:14:20 - In 1997, with her son happy and established, Zari is determined to return to Iran to see if she might be able to reclaim any portion of her family's previous estate. She finds it to be a country both totally unfamiliar, and exactly the same as she left it. The manner of dress and the fear are new - but under it all the same kindness and love her countrymen always displayed. 01:28:27 - Zari gives a dose of some of her gracious optimism. She sees no comparison to what happened in Iran happening here, in the US in the present day. According to Zari, the USA is insulated from such a religious coup because the number of people devoted to the same religion is not comparable. The two sign off with mutual declarations of hope and love. ---NEXT EPISODE: July 6th, 2022 - LESBIANS with Rachel Scanlon [AKA: THE LIVE SHOW!]

Navigating Culture | Motivation for Millennial Immigrants to Chart Their Own Path
At 4 years old, Parisa immigrated to the USA from Iran and became the weird girl with the parents who had weird accents. After the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979, her Arizonian community shrouded her in suspicion — she was now also a weird terrorist. Those labels compelled her to push for that ever-moving goal-post of ‘Good Immigrant' but, as many of us know you can achieve all the features of this title but still not be and feel accepted. She even felt out of place in the Persian community. She was told that she talked too much, that she took up too much space, and that she had too many opinions. Eventually she left Arizona and moved to New York, a place she dreamed about for years. In that glorious city, she dug deep and peeled back the layers. She graduated from Parsons, she became a Drag King, and she embraced her weirdness. Parisa is honest about living. And her honesty prevents her from saying that life suddenly becomes a bed of roses. Despite this she shows with each personal story that when you embrace your quirks, when you welcome being on the margins, when you fall in love with who you truly are, that's when success shows up for you. If you've ever felt alone in this world because of who you are. If you've struggled to feel comfortable, seen and accepted, then listen to Parisa's story and understand that when you commit to unlearning expectations and remembering your truth, your angels smile down on you.

There are few Hollywood movies more unbelievable than this true story of the mission to rescue six Americans during the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979, but are the liberties this films takes with the facts justified? Is it pro-CIA propaganda? And is it - in hindsight - deserving of the accolades it received upon its release? Do you remember the Iran hostage crisis, from 1979 to 1981? It was an event in which Iranian protestors seized 66 American citizens at the U.S. embassy in Tehran and held them hostage for 444 days. The crisis took place during the chaotic aftermath of the Iranian Revolution which resulted in the overthrow of the Pahlavi monarchy. The crisis, as will be discussed in this podcast episode, had dramatic effects on domestic politics in the United States, particularly the 1980 presidential election, and also served as the spark to ignite the reform of special operations within the United States military. Please check out my YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/c/ThreeMinutesofHistory/videos

Playboy Magazine called Herb Cohen “The World's Best Negotiator.” During the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan asked for his help to free 60 hostages from the U.S. Embassy (later popularized by the movie Argo). Fifteen years ago I read his New York Times bestselling book, You Can Negotiate Anything, which has been translated into 37 languages. It's been one of the most influential and applied books I've ever read. I've used his process for every sale, job, and car I've ever bought. He even helped me negotiate $100,000 off my NYC apartment. [New York Times Article] In this episode, we talk about common mistakes people make in negotiations, how different cultures around the world negotiate differently and what it was like to be in the oval office during the Iran Hostage Crisis.
