As the mother of 3 adopted children (two with Down syndrome), Heather Avis has a passion to shout the God-Given worth of every person! She loves celebrating inclusivity and how we are each different and unique. https://contestpearl.com/EYi7Ev2tXbCkAQtOszWD (Enter to win a FREE copy of Heather's New York Times Bestselling Children's book, Different - A Great Thing To Be! ) The contest ends August 11th 2021 at midnight. Episode Discussion PointsFun had yard saling in Southern California How she felt life was so unfair when she and her husband couldn't get pregnant How she was angry and vented to God like a tantruming child, and how He loved her through it all. What her most frustrating moment with God looked like when she was going through the adoption process. Sometimes God gives us gifts that we unwrap and the present isn't what we were hoping for. At those moments we need a shift in perspective, and realize God is the giver of good gifts. How they adopted their daughter with Down Syndrome, heart and lung conditions and were able to have front seats to miracles. When you are blessed with a child with special needs, your life changes, and there is a grieving period for your expectations, but it also opens you up to “the other side of things” where you get to glimpse divinity. When asked, “How do you do that?” Heather answered, “You do the thing you have to do for your kid,” whether it be open heart surgery or whatever else they are dealing with. The stories of adopting her three children, two with Down Syndrome and congenital heart defects, and one typical child. How her perspective on adoption has changed (For more details see separate section below). We need to shift the narrative from adoptive parents being the heroes to they are just a part of the triad along with birth families (where possible) and the child being adopted. Starting her group, “The Lucky Few” as a voice for parents of Down Syndrome children. Writing her books, https://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Few-Finding-Unlikely-Places/dp/0310345464 (“The Lucky Few,”) and https://www.amazon.com/Scoot-Over-Make-Some-Room/dp/0310354838/ (“Scoot Over and Make Some Room.”) Her dream of writing a children's book, and how that came to be her New York Times Bestselling book, https://www.amazon.com/Different-Great-Thing-Heather-Avis/dp/0593232658 (“Different - A Great Thing to Be!”) We also had a great discussion on how we promote inclusivity from the time people are young. Heather's favorite Bible verse is: 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18, “Rejoice always. Pray continually. Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” For Heather this means she can rejoice and pray always. God is God—period! She can trust in Him and His plan no matter what. Heather's Perspective on AdoptionHeather's perspective on adoption has changed from her getting a baby to having different goals when a child is born. This is how she thinks people should look at adoption: Keeping families intact by giving birth families support; Look at kinship adoption Look at adoption within their same race. Interracial adoption ALL with the idea of what is best for the child and that there will always be a birth family who is important to the child who are not a threat. That doesn't feel super important to my husband and me." "There's brokenness in infertility." "You can't know what you don't know." "I really didn't start thinking about my need for rest until my thirties, until I was already three kids in." "I started finding for myself that the idea of self-care felt like another to-do on my list, and it felt burdensome." "My oldest is eleven, and when she shows up in a space, she shows up as she is." Children throw tantrums and we call them “naughty.” We say, “they’ll grow out of it,” and move on. But as adults, we don’t stop reacting — it just looks a little different. We may say or do something we regret. So the next time someone around you is reacting in a way that’s surprising, take a step back and create some space. Learn more about your ad choices. Die Solidaritätsinitiative «Make Some Room. Track IDs DJ Set Alex Dallas (23 – 24H): Roisin Murphy Murphy's Law (dub) Professor Rhythm Release Me Dit Long gone (Prins Thomas Edit) Weasel Disco Ride on Omar S feat. John FM Second Life The Vision feat. Andreya Triana Mountains (Danny Krivit Edit) Icarus feat. «Make Some Room. In this episode, Rachel and Heather have a conversation about including others that may look different than us. That’s right, they crack lots of stereotypic, norms and molds that culture and society have put on people (specifically those that look different or have “a disability”). Heather talks through Jesus’s strategy when it came to people that acted differently, looked different and spoke differently and what we can learn from watching him break society’s standards for who we allow into our circles. Not quite sure if you’re doing “inclusion” right or not sure what your next step to inclusion is? Listen in! As an author of “Scoot Over and Make Some Room,” a mom of 3 adopted children, a narrative shifter and all around-rockstar, we have a few things to learn from this inspiring and insightful episode with Heather Avis. Heather and Josh Avis (@theluckyfewofficial) here! This week, we're answering a question that we get asked a whole lot! “How has having two kids with Down Syndrome created our family norm?” We should probably start by saying that we've never really been a family with “norms.” The two of us moved to Hawaii just weeks after getting married at the ages of 20 and 23. A few years later, we came back to California and adopted three kids (not all at once, thank goodness!). Macyn is 11 with Down Syndrome, Truly is 8, and August is 5 with Down Syndrome. Our free spirited nature definitely helped us adjust to the rollercoaster of these unique adoptions, but they still came with plenty of uncertainties. How would our extended family react to having someone with Down Syndrome in the family? How would having an older and younger sibling with Down Syndrome affect our middle daughter, Truly? How would we ever create “normalcy” out of this? One thing we do know for certain is that having two children with Down Syndrome has allowed us to know the fullness of humanity and we consider ourselves very, very lucky (hence our name, The Lucky Few!). Clearly, we have A LOT to cover today. So friends, join us for a chat about our 17 years of marriage, our family vacation in Hawaii, and how Truly (and all of us!) have been made better because of Down Syndrome. ___ Keep up with the Avis's on Instagram and their website! Angie and Nelson Stegall made a total life transformation and spent six years downsizing from two houses to a 38' motor home, finding satisfaction in travel, writing, and photography. They tell us about how their Grand Canyon adventure in 2013 helped them realize they wanted to radically change how they were living and how they spent six years downsizing. Angie's recent book "Make Some Room" and Nelson's photography inspire people to appreciate and preserve our natural spaces and encourages people to get out of their comfort zone, see more and do more, with less.

Our identity in Christ goes deeper than what we do. We are defined by who we are, not what we do. You have to fall more in love with our God who tells you to take a day off.

About two weeks ago, I had privilege to be in the company of the Suffers. I have been a fan of this amazing band for quite some time and when I got word they were about to drop their debut EP - Make Some Room - I became so excited that I had to reach out and feature them on this show. I was more than honored to have not just an interview but a conversation with lead vocalist Kam Franklin, saxophonist Cory Wilson, trumpeter Jon Durbin, and trombonist Michael Razo and it was fantastic! On this podcast of The Soul Brother Show - The Home of Heavy Soul and Raw Funk, these fantastic musicians talk about the making of the new project, their excitement about going on the road, and what it means to be a musician hailing from Houston, Texas.
