Someone tried to harvest Christian's voice for AI training. The pitch was polished, the project sounded real. But when she responded with ten professional questions, the conversation ended. Permanently. In this Deep Dive on Episode 275, Christian connects that experience to her conversation with Erik and Christopher Ewers, the brothers behind the PBS documentary Henry David Thoreau. Chris Ewers argues that every technological revolution has felt like the end of the world — the Industrial Revolution, digital cameras, and now AI. Each time the tool became indispensable. Then Christian pulls in Thoreau himself — the man who railed against the railroad and then rode the train 70 times. He used the tool deliberately. In this episode, you'll hear:The full story of the suspicious voice-over job offer and the ten questions that ended it.Why Christian's VO business is declining while her filmmaking and podcasting are thriving.Chris Ewers's case for why AI is the digital camera revolution all over again.Thoreau's “cost of a thing” quote and why it hits differently in the age of AI.The contradiction of Thoreau and the train — and what “live deliberately” actually means now.Jeff Goldblum at the mic and George Clooney saying “tell me if I suck” — what AI will never replace.Timestamps:0:00 What George Clooney Told the Directors0:18 Show open0:28 The Ethan Caldwell story2:33 Where I stand with AI3:49 The Ewers Brothers and the revolution that always comes5:09 Clip: Chris Ewers on AI and the digital camera revolution7:15 Thoreau, technology, and the train he swore he'd never ride9:25 What “live deliberately” actually means9:44 What Ethan Caldwell's silence reveals10:45 Goldblum, Clooney, and what machines can't replicate11:59 ClosingListen & Follow:Apple Podcasts: tinyurl.com/DocFirstAppleSpotify: tinyurl.com/DocFirstSpotifyYouTube: tinyurl.com/DocFirstYouTubeAmazon Music: tinyurl.com/DocFirstAmazonSupport the show on Patreon: tinyurl.com/DocFirstPatreonAbout the Guests (from DF Episode 275):Erik Ewers: Director, Editor. Even with Ken Burns and Don Henley attached, funding a PBS documentary is brutal. So what hope do the rest of us have?Erik and Christopher Ewers get real about PBS funding, AI's impact on filmmaking, and how they landed George Clooney, Jeff Goldblum, Ted Danson, Tate Donovan and Meryl Streep for their new PBS documentary Henry David Thoreau. In Part 2 of this conversation, the Ewers Brothers open up about the financial realities of documentary funding, even with Ken Burns and Don Henley attached, why Chris sees AI as the next revolution instead of the apocalypse, how broadcast is giving way to streaming, and the stories behind casting some of Hollywood's biggest voices. This is Part 2 of a two-part conversation. In Part 2, you'll learn:— Why having Ken Burns and Don Henley as executive producers doesn't make funding easy and who actually made the Thoreau film possible— Chris's case for why AI is the digital camera revolution all over again, not the death of filmmaking— The best professional advice Chris ever received and why it will never change— How Chris kept his mouth shut on a commercial set with Jeff Goldblum and how that silence led to Goldblum voicing Thoreau— The story of how Don Henley quietly recruited George Clooney as narrator and Clooney's reaction when asked how long he'd known Henley— Ken Burns's advice on directing Meryl Streep: “You don't.”— How streaming is changing episode length and why “the director's cut” isn't what it used to be.— Erik's approach to pre-planning edit cuts for PBS broadcast time slots without sacrificing the story— Why Ken Burns treats his mentorship like tough love — and why Erik is grateful for it— One thing filmmakers need to know about getting a documentary on PBSTimestamps:0:00 Introduction1:21 Unpacking the Thoreauvian mindset2:46 Thoreau's prescience on consumerism3:50 Erik on Thoreau's “cost of life” quote and the iPhone4:40 Thoreau and the birth of the Industrial Revolution6:03 Christian's advice: think from the end back6:50 Chris on the state of the industry — Industrial Revolution to AI10:20 Christian: as a voice actor, AI is a challenge10:53 The best professional advice Chris ever received11:36 Christian on the struggle to fund the next film12:54 Money is always the biggest hurdle13:15 How the Ewers Brothers fund PBS docs without federal money14:49 Ken Burns's two binders of rejection letters15:07 The Movies That Made Us — encouragement for indie filmmakers16:26 The reality: it's hard for everybody17:52 Erik on Ken Burns's legacy projects and the privilege of the brand20:58 Erik on earning the gift — Ken's tough love mentorship22:00 Broadcast vs. streaming — why episode length is changing23:52 Erik's editing strategy for PBS time slots25:37 Celebrity voice talent — how they landed Jeff Goldblum27:43 Don Henley's connections — Ted Danson and Meryl Streep29:09 The George Clooney reveal — “If Don Henley calls, you say yes”30:43 What it's like to direct celebrity voice talent30:55 Jeff Goldblum in the booth — pure instinct31:26 Ken Burns's advice on directing Meryl Streep31:52 George Clooney: “Tell me if I suck”32:42 DocuVue Deja Vu — Erik's picks and Chris's all-time favoriteDocuView DejaVu Picks:Erik Ewers: Crumb (1994), Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991), Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011), The Thin Blue Line (1988)Christopher Loren Ewers: Man on Wire (2008)Christian Taylor: Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy (Netflix, 2024)This episode is supported by Virgil Films Entertainment.About the Guests:Erik Ewers — Director, Editor. He edited nearly every Ken Burns film since The Civil War. He still didn't know who he was.Henry David Thoreau wrote that most people lead lives of “quiet desperation.” But what did he actually mean - and what does it look like inside a successful career? That's the question Christian Taylor explores in this episode of Documentary First: The Deep Dive, after her conversation with Erik and Christopher Ewers—two brothers who just directed a three-part, three-hour PBS documentary on Thoreau. The film is narrated by George Clooney, with Jeff Goldblum voicing Thoreau, Ted Danson as Emerson, and Meryl Streep voicing several women in Thoreau's life. It's executive produced by Ken Burns and Don Henley. What struck Christian wasn't the star-studded cast or the prestige credentials. It was a quiet confession from Erik - Ken Burns's senior editor for 33 years - who admitted that despite decades of career confidence, he didn't really know himself. He described himself as “lost and wayward.” And it was his own documentary about youth mental illness that finally woke him up.That led Christian back to Thoreau's famous line and to a realization: Thoreau wasn't describing unhappy people. He was describing people who don't even know they're suffering. People whose competence has become the hiding place. What You'll Learn:Why competence can mask a total lack of self-knowledge - for decadesWhat Thoreau actually meant by “quiet desperation” (it's not what most people think)How Erik Ewers's own documentary became the mirror that showed him himselfThe connection between Thoreau's grief, Christian's grief, and the impulse to strip life down to what's realA practical challenge for filmmakers and creators: rest is where the seeing happensThe Core Idea:Your craft can take you everywhere - except inward. The stories we tell have the power to tell us something back, but only if we're paying attention. This episode explores what happens when the noise finally stops and we're left standing on honest ground.Featured Guests:Erik Ewers – Director, Editor. Ken Burns's senior editor for 33+ years. Bob Rafelson's “Five Easy Pieces” established the behavior-driven, theme-over-plot indie movies that paved the way for the best era for indies. Jack Nicholson is a badass (asshole) prodigy-turned-roustabout looking to find himself in people he's willing to screw over in Bob Rafelson's seminal movie. Meg Wolitzer presents three stories in which plans go awry, or alter completely. In Ben Loory's “Dandelions,” read by Wyatt Cenac, a suburb is invaded, and experiences a change of heart. Edwidge Danticat imagines an ultimate act and its consequences in “Cane and Roses,” read by Anika Noni Rose. And a romance with comic underpinnings changes course in Ray Bradbury's “The Laurel and Hardy Love Affair,” read by Tate Donovan.
Host Meg Wolitzer presents two works that reassess and redefine our ideas of “the West.” It's both a landscape of awesome beauty, and the scene of cultural appropriation, and we've got two masters sharing and shaping our experience. In Louise Erdrich's “The Hollow Children” a natural disaster tests family ties. It's read by Tate Donovan. And writer and environmental activist Rick Bass stress tests the West, and his main character, in “Fires,” read by John Benjamin Hickey. We also reprise part of an interview with Louise Erdrich from earlier in the year.In it, she mentions a new novel in progress, which has now been published: The Mighty Red: A Novel.

Your Stupid Minds returns to its loose theme of “Sicko Movies from the 1990s” (see: Blank Check, Milk Money, First Kid) with the hilarious premise of “what if an adult woman married a child as a joke?” It's 1994's Holy Matrimony, starring Patricia Arquette, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Tate Donovan. After a life-changing carnival-money heist executed by Havana (Arquette) and her boyfriend Peter (Donovan), the pair retreat to a Canadian Hutterite community to lay low until the heat dies down. Peter is a former member of the community pretending he wants to return to the fold. In order to stay, he and Havana must marry. But when he dies in a car accident, due to their levirate marriage tradition (based on Deuteronomy 25:5), Havana must marry Peter's 12 year old brother Zeke (Gordon-Levitt) or be cast out. Since she wants to find her heist money, she calls their bluff and marries the child. The movie descends into some second act zaniness where she learns the value of hard work (or doesn't), then they must go back to the United States to return the money, and are pursued by a corrupt FBI agent Markoski (John Schuck). Will they return the money? Will anyone learn a lesson? Is this movie as gross as the premise implies? You'll have to listen to find out!
Partners WAS a show. This short-lived sitcom is about two young architects in San Francisco, Bob (Jon Cryer) and Owen (Tate Donovan.) Off the top, Owen gets engaged to Alicia (Maria Pitillo), and his best friend Bob competes for attention as something of a third wheel. It's a fairly standard hangout show about dating and friendship dynamics with vague references to work, but with slightly saltier language because it was on Fox. It's almost like a West-Coast version of Friends, with a rotating cast of guest stars featuring the likes of Lisa Edelstein, Kathy Griffin and even Jennifer Anniston. Book Vs. Movie: Ethan FromeThe 1911 book Vs. the 1993 movieThe Margos have decided to cover a proper novel-to-movie adaptation after a few weeks of pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a "book" on their show. Edith Wharton's 1911 novel Ethan Frome tells the story of a sickly man who lives in Starkfield, Massachusetts, with his wife and her cousin. The novel explores how they ended up in this situation. It tells the story of Ethan, trapped in a loveless marriage until the arrival of Zeena's cousin, Mattie, who brings hope and passion to his life. The novel highlights how societal norms and personal choices can lead to tragic outcomes and serves as a commentary on the constraints of rural life and the consequences of unfulfilled desires. In this ep, the Margos discuss:The career of Edith Wharton. The plot of the storyThe differences between the book and the adaptation. The cast of the 1993 film: Liam Neeson (Ethan Frome,) Patricia Arquette (Mattie Silver,) Joan Allen (Zeena,) Tate Donovan (Reverand Smith,) Stephen Mendilo (Ned Hale,) Phil Garran (Mr. Howe,) Virginia Smith (Mrs. Howe,) Annie Nessen (Sarah Anne Howe,) Katharine Houghton (Mrs. Hale,) George Woodard (Troy Powell,) and Jay Goede and Denis Eady.Clips used:Ethan meets ZeenaThe Reverand meets EthanMattie blossoms after a yearEthan and Mattie flirtZeena wants Mattie goneMusic: Rachel PortmanBook Vs. Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke are joined by Cory Martin, the writer who began as Stephanie Savage's assistant, moved her way up, and penned the novelizations of The OC! They are discussing S2 Ep12, “The Lonely Hearts Clubs.” Happy Valentine's Day… Before diving into the episode that had the hosts yelling at their screens, they hear all about Cory's OC experience – from pulling an all-nighter preparing the pilot presentation to writing the episode that Tate Donovan directed. Did you know there was a potential spin-off about The OC that Cory was going to write on? Listen to find out which OC character it was about! Cory discusses her new book: The Yoga Prescription: A Chronic Illness Survival Guide, in which she discusses using philosophies of yoga to cope with her MS. Then, they dive into the episode! They're talking nose-humping, the sad-looking bus Seth travels home on, and Peter Gallagher's performance making or breaking the viewers' love of Sandy! Cory shares which storyline wasn't in the original episode outline and they all discuss how the network dictated the outcome of the famous Alex and Marissa kiss. Stay until the end for story time when Melinda and Rachel read an excerpt from one of Cory's OC novelizations, “The Summer Bummer.” The Lonely Hearts Club Synopsis: It's Valentine's Day in the OC but is anyone excited? Sandy attempts to make it up to Kirsten for lying about Rebecca. But, Sandy makes a choice to see Rebecca on Valentine's Day, putting his marriage in jeopardy. Zach, Seth, and Summer head to San Diego to pitch their comic-book idea, but Seth can't handle Summer and Zach being together. Ryan tries to make peace with Caleb for the sake of Lindsay. Marissa and Alex take their relationship to the next step as “the tide turns.”
Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke are joined by First Assistant Director (AD) on The OC, Jen Anderson. Not only do they discuss S2 Ep11, “The Second Chance,” but also, highlight what it's like to work behind the camera. As a First AD, Jen was charged with holding it all together, and she saw it all! Hear about what that role entails, how Jen became a first AD, and a secret from when she first started working on The OC. Don't worry, Rachel is there to help define all the industry terms and acronyms. Jen worked closely with the cast – hear who was most likely to… show up late? Break character? Make her laugh? Listen to find out! She also discusses what it was like shooting this episode – from having to use the public pier to shooting the dinner scene. Also, hear a hilarious Tate Donovan story and Mindy's deep dive into Patrón Tequila (just listen, you'll see why). The Second Chance Synopsis: Summer takes an active role in the making of the comic book, which worries Seth. And for good reason, as old feelings emerge. Lindsay gives it another try at forming a relationship with Caleb and after a near-death experience, she believes he's ready to be her father.
Rachel Bilson, Melinda Clarke, and Tate Donovan are all discussing (S2 Ep7) “The Family Ties,” and it's FANTASTIC! There are always laughs when Tate is around, and in this episode, the three of them crack up when they chat about all of Jimmy and Julie's makeout scenes! Melinda even has a theory on why their makeouts just work. In this episode, where we say goodbye to Jimmy, Tate has some commentary and thoughts on his performance. He also highlights a “classic OC moment,” when the show glosses over some serious stuff with Summer's mom. And, he chimes in about that sweatshirt he wears in his emotional beach scene with Marissa. Hear about what it took to dress Adam Brody as a “bad boy,” and the quote from this episode that Melinda uses in her everyday life. Stay until the end to learn more about Tate Donovan when the hosts throw some rapid-fire questions his way! The Family Ties Synopsis: Now that Lindsay is Kirsten's sister, can she also be Ryan's girlfriend? And can Seth become a bad boy so that he can impress Alex? Jimmy decides to leave for Maui, after realizing his relationship with Julie, and his time in Newport has not been good for him or his family. Marissa doesn't take the news well. Zach confides in Seth, yet Seth blows his cover, causing trouble between Zach and Summer.
Rachel and Melinda discuss "The Outsider" (S1 Ep5) with guest Tate Donovan, who played Jimmy Cooper on The OC. Tate shares the best line he ever heard from an actress (hint: that actress is one of the hosts), his own memories from Camp Gallagher, and why he wants Rachel and Melinda to try directing. The Outsider Synopsis: Ryan accompanies Seth to a party in a rough neighborhood. Ryan again must save him after Seth invites the same people to a party in Newport. Luke is shot. Broke Jimmy has a hard choice. Kirsten and Julie go on a spa trip with the newpsies.
Rachel and Melinda are joined by Amanda Righetti, who played Hailey Nichol on The OC, to discuss “The Shower,” (S1 Ep25). See how it all began for Amanda with a deal with Fox, which landed her on The OC for her first major acting role. And then, how that same deal, took her away from the show! What was it like playing a role much older than she was? A role where she had to make out with Tate Donovan? Listen to find out! Melinda and Amanda skip ahead to discuss their iconic catfight scene in The Strip. They also reminisce about her role as a stripper on The L.A. and Hailey's devious ways sending Kirsten and Sandy to a swingers party in The Countdown. Their conversation takes a serious turn when the hosts and Amanda address Theresa's domestic abuse storyline in The Shower, as well as the prevalence of this abuse in today's society. On a lighter note, they discuss the concept of a best friend, and everyone's surprise when Julie tells Kirsten she's her Maid of Honor! And of course, the most awkward lunch ever with Seth and Summer's dad must be discussed! The Shower Synopsis: Reluctantly, Kirsten and Marissa must throw a bridal shower for Julie. Marissa invites a surprise guest, Aunt Cindy, as a way to spite her mom. Seth meets Summer's father at a lunch so awkward, it's hard to watch. Theresa enlists Sandy's legal advice when Eddie hits her, and Ryan wants to take matters into his own hands.
Rachel and Melinda are back with Adam Brody, for part two of their interview with him. They dive further into the episode “The Strip,” (S1 Ep26), and share some behind the scene stories, like how Rachel made her way into the episode and why she had to go to "The" Vegas. Keep listening to hear Adam's take on Mischa Barton's recent comments and hear how things went south with his relationship with Tate Donovan. Looking back, Adam shares his regrets and observes his behavior at the time through an evolved lens. Then, both Adam and listeners are treated to some surprise callers -- including one that questions a photo involving Josh Schwartz, Adam Brody and playmate, Pamela Anderson.
New York-based film writer Jason Miller joins to discuss the strange, beautiful cinematic worlds of the unsung Alan Rudolph and his 1992 film 'Equinox' starring Matthew Modine as identical twin brothers separated at birth. We begin with a discussion of Rudolph's career, beginning as an assistant director to the great Robert Altman before branching out and producing some of the most compellingly idiosyncratic films of the 1980s (as well as his feature 'Remember My Name' from 1978, arguably his greatest work). Then we turn our sights to 'Equinox' and talk about the film's distinctive rhythms and characters as well as the ways Rudolph imbues his fantasy world with a potent naturalism and sense of place. Finally, we discuss the injustice of Rudolph's relative obscurity within cinephile circles, and why the filmmaker's entire body of work is due for a necessary and urgent reappraisal. They discuss the story lines in each episode, Tate Donovan's role as Jimmy Cooper, as well as Paul Wesley's role as Donnie.
