From oral tinctures to transdermal lotions to cocoa-butter suppositories, infusing cannabis medicine at home allows consumers to figure out their own perfect doses and avoid the high costs of constantly stocking up on pre-made products. Making usable DIY cannabis oil or salve takes some real scientific know-how. It's easy and expensive to mess it up. But if you can master it, you can make and store literally any marijuana product that's helpful for your ailments. So how do we properly extract the medicine from the cannabis flower? How do we infuse that medicine into a medium that's safe to ingest? And how do we store our new homemade salves and oils so we can continue to find relief in place of pharmaceuticals for issues like pain, inflammation, skin problems, gastrointestinal troubles, and much more? This week, host Brit Smith gets an At-Home Infusion 101 class from Shanel Lindsay, the CEO of Ardent (ardentcannabis.com) and Billow (whatisbillow.com); two biotech device companies that help consumers more easily and effectively extract and use cannabis medically at home. Shanel explains the essential steps to properly heating cannabis flower (decarboxylating) and getting the good stuff off the plant, how to infuse it into oils, milks, or alcohols, how to figure out your personal dosing, how to keep your homemade infusions fresh for longer, and how to do 'infusion boosting.'Follow us on social media @DifferentLeaf and follow host Brit Smith @BritTheBritish.Order the new winter medical issue of Different Leaf the magazine at DifferentLeaf.com or find your nearest in-person retailer at differentleaf.com/on-the-newsstandFind our new merch line at xDifferentLeaf.com

Blunt Blowin' Mama connects with the brilliant Shanel Lindsay who founded a business that encourages a cannabis consumer to create their own edibles. Ardent Cannabis’s decarboxylator offers an elevated cooking experience without the mess or smell.  Her product has been tested extensively and her team uses data to make sure the user experience is optimal.  Shanel’s medical journey with cannabis started when she was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst, after researching the effects Tylenol and other pharmaceutical drugs can have on the body, she realized that cannabis was the best way to treat her illness. Living in a prohibition state created significant hurdles when it came to making sure she had access to her medicine.  Back in 2010, before weed became recreationally or medically legal in Massachusetts, Shanel was arrested for possession of marijuana in the amount of 14 grams. Not only was this situation scary, the ramifications of being a practicing attorney with a possession charge could be a career ender. She expected to receive a ticket but was completely shocked when the officers insisted on bringing her in. Being an attorney Shanel knew that advocating for her rights was the only way she was going to receive fair treatment. From then on she was an avid petitioner for marjiuana legalization while fighting for social equity for people of color in the industry.

This week on Ramon and Vlad take it straight to the boulevard with Shanel Lindsay, founder and CEO of Ardent Cannabis, to tell us how she went from a lawyer doing part time research on cannabis to launching the industry’s leading device for cannabis decarboxylation. She takes us through how she “Frankensteined” together the first Ardent Nova after years of research and some of the barriers she faced when convincing the community of the value of decarbing. She also discusses an incident she had with Massachusetts police that spark her mission to correct the broken cannabis laws and seek social equity and benefits for the people most effected by the war on drugs. She even gives us a brief history of the Massachusetts cannabis act and her predictions for a more diverse industry in the future.

Frankie is joined by Shanel Lindsay, founder and CEO of Ardent Cannabis. Over 10 years ago, Shanel began to use cannabis medicinally as an alternative to pharmaceuticals to treat pain and inflammation caused by an ovarian cyst. Shanel quickly found that properly preparing cannabis for medicinal use was truly a scientific process. Over the next decade she continued to gain first-hand expertise with various methods of extracting, preparing, and applying cannabis compounds.

Shanel Lindsay is one of Massachusetts' thought leaders on the medical use of cannabis and is founder and president of Ardent, a startup in the space. She is also a member of the Massachusetts Cannabis Advisory Board, where she works with Massachusetts state government to develop and implement regulations for the medical and adult use markets. Here is her advice for anyone thinking of launching a cannabis-related startup of their own: Be prepared. Have lots of contingency plans. In cannabis, I think a lot of people feel like they need to go and become a grower or take up some expertise that they don't already have. My suggestion for people who are looking to move into the Cannabis space is think about what you're already good at. Chances are, businesses in the space are desperately in need of whatever skill you bring to the table. And that might be a cannabis skill and that might be a traditional business skills like accounting or marketing or any number of support rolls. And getting involved in the business that way you'll quickly learn what you need to know about the cannabis world. Because it is always changing, you absolutely need good mentors, good investors, good colleagues. So getting out and networking is really important. And going and learning about the laws. I think that the biggest piece about becoming involved in the cannabis business is understanding that this business is one part business and one part advocacy. And if you aren't willing to go and stand up for what's right and also use your business to push forward against the stigma, against cannabis prohibition, against the inequity that exist because of prohibition, then you probably shouldn't get into this business. Listen to what else she has to say, in this podcast:

Shanel Lindsay joins us and shares her personal journey. A lawyer she was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst but her treatment wasn’t solving the issue. Enter cannabis. Shanel began experimenting with decarboxylation. Over weeks and months she improved her process. And when medical cannabis was passed in Massachusetts a lab opened up close to home so Shanel worked with them to continue to improve her process eventually leading to her manufacturing a device. Her thought for others was you shouldn’t have to know how to process Willow Bark to get Aspirin- it’s the same thing with cannabis, you should just be able to push a button and get what you need. So she’s now got the device and it’s been 16 years of no issues with her cyst thanks to cannabis.
