Send us Fan MailSix years ago, ENGINEERING CH∆NGE® started with a simple idea: create the kind of conversation you might have over coffee with a colleague about the challenges—and opportunities—facing engineering and other STEM organizations. In this season finale, my co-producer Quincy joins me behind the mic as we look back on six seasons of the podcast, the lessons learned along the way, and what might be next for ENGINEERING CH∆NGE®. We discuss why I shifted to a solo format for Season 5, how the companion ebook Engineering for Society influenced the season's content, the realities of producing a podcast while balancing a demanding professional life, and why some of this season's most difficult conversations were also the most important. We also explore how the podcast has evolved from a focus on engineering education to broader conversations about organizational systems, leadership, culture, technology, and change—and why listeners both inside and outside STEM continue to connect with these topics. In this episode, we discuss:The origins of "Grab a Latte and Listen"How ENGINEERING CH∆NGE® has evolved over six seasonsWhy Season 5 shifted to a solo formatLessons learned about balancing impact, perfectionism, and self-careThe emotional story behind What Systems Lose When Fear LeadsWhy systemic challenges often appear in different forms but share common rootsHow the Engineering for Society ebook helped shape Season 5Possibilities for Season 6, including guest interviews, panel discussions, and research-to-practice conversationsWhy your feedback will help shape the future of the podcastI'd Love to Hear From YouWhat topics, guests, challenges, or conversations would be most valuable to you in Season 6?Use the fan mail link in the show notes and let me know. Why Joe Rogan Beat Late Night TVWhen I was a kid, hearing Johnny Carson's theme music meant it was time for bed. Today, nobody has to stay up for anything. And that one shift explains a huge part of why late night is fading and why your podcast has to work harder to earn attention.Conversation vs Promotional AppearancesIn the early years of Johnny Carson, the show was 90 minutes and they actually had conversations as apposed to the "tell me about your family vacation, and let's roll the clip" interviews we see on late night showsAppointment Viewing is DeadThe days of "must see tv" on Thursday night died with the VCR and DVR. I haven't watched live TV in years. So now the audience that is staying up to watch live is much older (somewhere between age 60-70), and is about HALF of the audience comparing it to the days wheh David Letterman get almost 7 million a night. The Celebrity Mystique is GoneI once stayed up to watch B.B. King on the tonight show. Why? Because I couldn't hear him on the radio. I was too young to go to a concert. If I did that today and wanted to see Joe Bonamassa I wouldn't need to wait to see him on TV. I could see him on his YouTube channel, or multiple interviews on podcasts.#1 in Late Night is a Big Fish in a Much Smaller PondKeep in mind that Steven Colbert being #1 in late night in 2026 is way different than being #1 in late night in 1993. Late-night TV revenue has reportedly fallen from about $400 million a year to $200 million a year—a 50% decline—while some shows that once drew 7–8 million nightly viewers now struggle to reach 3 million.YouTube Doesn't Pay the SameAccording to one report, YouTube pays one tenth of what a network ad spot would go for. When you audience is cut in half, you have less advertisers. When the advertisers you have are paying you 90% less and your expenses stay the same that is a problem.Keep Control of Your ContentRemember big companies with big payouts WANT CONTROL. Conan focused on owning his content and that resulted in a 150 million dollar payout.Only Amazing Content Will Stand OutIf you want podcast growth, you need to make sure you are doing as many of the following as possible.Make them:laughcrythinkgroanMake Sure The ContentEducatesEntertainsSaves the audience timeSaves them moneyMakes them FEEL somethingIf it's information you can get any place else, even better. A great podcast can be boiled down to content and delivery. So this episode is focused on content.Be Ready to PromoteWhen someone says, "Oh, you do a podcast?" be ready to explain what it is, what its about, and how people benefit from consuming your content (and say your website). We hear how Macaulay Culkin dropped the ball so bad on the Ellen show.Housekeeping: How to Pitch a PodcastI am still preparing to launch this show and I'm accepting stories. It's coming...Mentioned in this episode:Live AppearancesI will be at the Empower Podcasting Conference (Year 3!) in Charlotte North Carolina. This is my favorite type of conference with a cap at 250 people, it's a great crowd without being overwhelming. Welcome to S04E10 of A Friend for the Long Haul - A Long Covid Podcast! I accidentally invented a virtual summer camp for Spoonies after having a small existential crisis in my Instagram stories. In this episode, I talk about why summer can feel surprisingly painful for chronically ill and neurodivergent people, especially parents, caregivers, and anyone grieving the life they thought they'd have. Between Long COVID, autism, ADHD, sensory overwhelm, heat intolerance, and the logistical nightmare of trying to “summer normally,” I realized what I actually need is community, ritual, silliness, softness, and something to look forward to.Enter: Camp Long Haul.A fully optional, low-pressure, asynchronous virtual camp for spoonie folks featuring themed weeks, crafts, scavenger hunts, campfire chats, hydration flotillas, ghost stories, pacing tips, and absolutely zero requirement to keep up or explain your absence.Lurkers welcome, goblin mode accepted, no assholes. Welcome to S04E09 of A Friend for the Long Haul - A Long Covid Podcast. This episode is part two of my catch-up chat with Megan Wages, my second-ever podcast guest, first wave Covid long hauler, co-owner of Fancy Free Nursery in Tampa, Florida, and the guest of last week's S04E08, Running a Small Business as a Covid Long Hauler with Megan Wages. In this episode, we talk about plants! I've become a plant lady in the last 6 years, and I've noticed that my plants tend to tell me a lot about how I'm feeling. First I noticed that the downstairs ones were fine. The upstairs ones were so sad. Turns out there's a reason for that. In Part 2 of this two-part episode, we get into the actual plant content. Specifically: what should a spoonie with limited energy, unpredictable symptoms, and a complicated relationship with energy actually grow? The answer is: more than you think. Megan walks through her spoonie-approved plant list, propagation tips, why your Calathea's attitude is not your fault, and the thing fluoride in tap water does to your spider plant. She also answers listener questions live, talks about soils, orchids in wine decanters, and the surprisingly emotional experience of a plant that keeps coming back no matter how badly you've neglected it.There's also a spider plant baby giveaway. Alysia won. She lives in a basement apartment and this is probably the perfect plant. I wish I had the spoons to get to the post office and send it to her. One day, my love!!! If you have Endometriosis, you will know that the pain and fatigue can feel relentless. In our episode last week, we discussed consideration around egg freezing and IVF for Endo Warriors with Dr Shirin Khanjani. This week, we're bringing it right down to what you're eating day to day as the right approach to food can make a real difference to how your body manages inflammation, metabolises hormones and supports you through the difficult days.In this episode I am joined by Jane Aherne, a Registered Nutritionist with an MSc in Nutrition from the University of Westminster. Jane specialises in fertility, reproductive conditions and chronic inflammation, and has worked with women dealing with endometriosis and PCOS across functional medicine environments including IVF Matters and TIC Health. This is not about a restrictive diet or a long list of rules. It is about understanding why certain foods make your symptoms worse, why others help, and how to make small, sustainable changes that your body will actually thank you for. What we discuss in this episode:Why Endometriosis and chronic inflammation are so closely linkedThe difference between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods and why it mattersWhy Omega 3 is Jane's first recommendation for almost every client with endoThe best food sources of Omega 3 and what to do if you are vegan or do not eat fishThe role of the Mediterranean diet in reducing inflammationWhy trans fats, ultra-processed foods and alcohol can actively worsen symptomsHow gut health and liver function affect the way your body processes oestrogenThe blood sugar spike and crash cycle: why it matters so much in an inflammatory environmentHow constant blood sugar spikes can drive insulin resistance and compound existing inflammationWhy comfort eating during flare ups can actually make things worse and what to do insteadPractical swaps: dates, nuts, seeds, high protein meals and how to make them work in real lifeWhy how you eat can be just as important as what you eatMindful eating, stress and the rest-and-digest responsePlanning and preparation for shift workers and people on the goBalancing oestrogen naturally through fibre, cruciferous vegetables and liver-supporting foodsHow soon you can expect to feel the benefits of dietary changesWhy there is no single perfect diet for endometriosis and what personalisation actually looks likeThe biggest misconception Jane wants to set the record straight onJane's one piece of advice if you can only do one thingJane's five small changes to start this weekAdd two portions of oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) or a quality Omega 3 supplementIncrease fibre gradually through whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumesInclude more cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and kale for oestrogen metabolismSwap high-sugar snacks for a date with a Brazil nut or a handful of mixed nuts and seedsSit down for meals away from screens and allow your body to move into rest-and-digest mode Jane on InstaThis episode is sponsored by Wild NutritionI know how overwhelming it can be figuring out which supplements actually make sense for your body, especially when you are already managing a condition like endometriosis. Ettevõtlus võib olla üksildane teekond. Uuringud näitavad, et ligi pooled ettevõtjad maadlevad sellega. If you have endometriosis and you're thinking about your fertility, this is one of those conversations I really want you to hear.In this episode, I sat down with Dr. Shirin Khanjani, Consultant Gynaecologist and accredited subspecialist in reproductive medicine and surgery, to properly unpack what's actually going on when endometriosis and fertility collide. This chat comes off the back of the government's Renewed Women's Health Strategy, which has once again highlighted just how many women are still being dismissed, delayed, or left without answers. And when it comes to endometriosis, the reality is still pretty shocking. On average, it takes seven to eight years to get a diagnosis. So this episode is about what happens next. Once you finally have that diagnosis, what do you actually need to know?We talk through everything, from how surgery can affect your egg reserve, to why IVF isn't a one-size-fits-all approach for endometriosis patients, to the emotional weight of trying to navigate all of this at the same time. What we cover in this episodeWhy endometriosis has been one of the biggest gaps in women's health and how that is slowly starting to shift The many different ways endometriosis can show up, from period pain to IBS, fatigue, back pain and infertility Why diagnosis still takes years and what you can do to advocate for yourself What to ask for at GP level and how to push for proper investigations The nuance around surgery and when it can help fertility or potentially reduce egg reserve What happens to ovarian reserve when chocolate cysts are removed Why fertility preservation, like egg or embryo freezing, should be considered before surgery in some cases How endometriosis changes IVF protocols and why specialist care matters The impact of fluid-filled tubes on implantation and when surgery becomes necessary The emotional and psychological toll of managing endometriosis alongside fertility treatment Why continuity of care makes such a difference to outcomes Common misconceptions around natural conception with endometriosis Why waiting too long without investigation can cost valuable reproductive time The impact of endometriosis in the workplace and why awareness still matters Why endometriosis and IVF is not one-size-fits-allOne of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that standard IVF pathways don't always apply if you have endometriosis.Dr. Khanjani explains that specialist protocols often need to include:Managing oestrogen levels carefully during stimulation Navigating more complex egg collections due to scar tissue or cysts Using antibiotics during egg collection to reduce inflammation risk Supporting the body after collection to keep endometriosis under control Her advice is simple but important. When you walk into a clinic, ask directly if they have specific protocols for endometriosis patients. If they don't, that tells you something.Misconceptions we really need to clear upThere are a few things Dr. Khanjani is very clear on:You can still fall pregnant naturally with endometriosis. The chances may be lower, but it's not impossible Egg quality is not automatically worse. IVF outcomes can be comparable once eggs are retrieved Surgery is not always the first step. In some cases, it can delay treatment or reduce egg reserve Being told to “just keep trying” without investigation can waste valuable time There isn't one perfect pathway. Everything needs to be individualised About Dr. Shirin KhanjaniDr. Shirin Khanjani is a Consultant Gynaecologist and accredited subspecialist in reproductive medicine and surgery. She holds a PhD from Imperial College London and is an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London. In her NHS role at UCLH, she focuses on low ovarian reserve, recurrent implantation failure and endometriosis. She is also a co-founder of Fitzrovia Fertility, a London clinic built around genuinely personalised, evidence-based care.Find out more: https://fitzroviafertility.co.uk https://fitzroviafertility.co.uk/about-usWhy this conversation mattersI hear from so many of you who've been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or passed from one specialist to another for years.By the time you get to a fertility clinic, you're often already exhausted, anxious, and unsure who to trust. This episode is about helping you feel more informed and more prepared. So when you walk into those conversations, you know what to ask and what to look out for. This episode is for you if you are:Newly diagnosed and trying to understand what this means for your fertility Considering surgery and want to understand the impact on your egg reserve About to start IVF and unsure whether your clinic has the specialist knowledge needed Trying to conceive and being told to wait without investigation Supporting someone navigating all of the above Support and resourcesThe Fertility Podcast is the official podcast for Fertility Action, a charity providing education, support and campaigning for fairer access to fertility treatment.Fertility Action runs free drop-in support sessions twice a week. Kirjuta meile aadressil minutid@lhv.ee.
Podcasti on palannut pitkästä talvihorroksestaan!
Resident Evil! Resident Evil! RESIDENT EVIL!

This is not about food rules, trends, or government guidelines — it's about real food, real life, and what helps her feel steady and energized while living with metastatic breast cancer. In this conversation, Heather talks about:Why she doesn't follow nutrition rules (even when new guidelines come out)The simple framework she uses instead: protein, fiber, and varietyEating real food, mostly plants — without rigidityConsistency over optimizationUsing ideas like “30 plants a week” as a gentle nudge, not a mandateLetting food support your life — not become another thing to manageThis episode is honest, practical, and grounded in lived experience — not extremes.Need a quick reset when life feels overwhelming?Heather's 15-minute guide, Break the Cancer Spiral, helps you steady your mindset anytime things start to spin.

A recording from my enthralling conversation with Prof Matthew Cobb about the life and science contributions of Francis Crick, regarded as one of the most influential biologists of all times, along with Darwin and Mendel. As you'll see, there's so much more to Crick's story than cracking DNA's double helix structure in a matter of weeks with James Watson. Matthew Cobb, Emeritus Professor of the University of Manchester, has written several award-winning books on life science, but I think this is his most important one to date, deeply researched and a thrilling account of Crick's life, clearing up, as best as one can, many questions, and presenting some surprises. The transcript is available (A.I. generated) by clicking at the top right.A few things we discussed—Crick's reaction to James Watson's bookCrick contrasted his own approach to science writing with Watson's memoir: “The difference between my lecture and your book is that my lecture had a lot more intellectual content and nothing like so much gossip. (...) Your book on the other hand, is mainly gossip and I think it a pity in this way that there is so much of it that it obscures some of the important conclusions which can be drawn of what we did at the time”.—The Peyote Poem, by Michael McClure (part 1) that had a big influence on Crick—Crick's 1994 neuroscience book “The Astonishing Hypothesis”“You, your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free Weill, are in fact no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules.”—CrickThe book has been reviewed at Science, Nature, The Economist and many other journals. Here is a gift link to The Economist It has deservedly been named a best book of 2025 by The Guardian, The Economist, and many other media.Thank you Bruce Lanphear, Harshi Peiris, Ph.D., Elisabetta Pilotti, Allan Konopka, Stephen B. It's time for something special, friends! Over the next couple of months, we're going to be ‘on location', a field trip of sorts, visiting a national park in our stories. There's a competition going on among the animals of the national park to see which ones can attract the most visitors and have their photo taken the most! And while we get to watch them compete for a prize, we're going to do the same!! That means…it's CONTEST TIME! If you would like to enter the contest, pick an animal you would find in a national park, use your imagination to come up with a way that animal might attract visitors and get its photo taken. Then, use your creativity to show me your idea. As long as you can send it to me through email or Facebook, you can use any format you'd like (drawing, digital art, acting, sculpting, writing, singing, etc). The deadline for this competition is July 31, 2025. And the winning family will receive:1) A Ms. Adventure's Treehouse sticker2) The opportunity to be a character on an upcoming podcastI can't wait to see what you come up with! Send your entries to msadventurestreehouse@gmail.com or by messaging us on Facebook.

Buy Jon's Books!Reunited after all these yearsThe last time I interviewed Jon Bassoff about a book, Barack Obama was president. Yeah. Jon has had a rewarding career of great book releases since then, and when I saw the synopsis for THE MEMORY WARD, I knew I had to read it and get him back on a call to catch up. This book is going to invite comps like crazy, to stuff like Stepford Wives, Truman Show, and other classic stories about manipulation, control, and the fallibility of our own memories. I even added Memento and The Number 23 to the list in this conversation. So naturally if those things interest you, you should immediately buy this book and tear through it. But know that it's a story that is its own beast, and doesn't ape other stories or sit in a trope. It's a deftly crafted timeline of suspicion, paranoia, deception, and the need to feel in control of our own lives. The setting feels very 1950s, but it's also modern, giving it an eerily manufactured setting which starts you and keeps you on edge. I thought it was delightful, and Jon didn't just hand us a story, he gave us a puzzle to try to figure out, all the way to the last sentence. Just great stuff.Coming up on the podcastI have a lot of irons in fires and so here are some of the names you can look forward to seeing/hearing soon: Nick Kolakowski, Sam Rebelein, Michael David Wilson, Drew Huff, Tim Waggonner, and a lot more! For those who prefer YouTube: This is a public episode.
