The dawn of the home computer seemed to usher in the death of computing's networked past dominated by dumb terminals connected to mainframes, but a few visionaries foresaw a world in which the microcomputer technology invading millions of homes could be connected and the data networks already in consumer hands, such as cable TV and telephones, could usher in a new way of connecting people and distributing software. Our guest, Larry J. Dunlap, was one such pioneer. The company he cofounded, The Games Network almost brought that dream to the world but tragically came up short. Larry tells us of his early days as a musician, a recording entrepreneur, his entry into computing, the spectacular rise of The Games Network, its fall, and life after failure, his reinvention as an online game developer and today, as a novelist. A fascinating life as told by a true storyteller. Oh, and TV's Robin, Burt Ward, and D&D co-creator Dave Arnesson also play roles. Florida Man did what?!? Why does your thumb turn green? Does anyone other than Jeff remember Ron Popeil? Stuff I Never Knew Trivia Game Show tests your knowledge with facts you may have never known before! Host Jeff Revilla welcomes three guests to play three rounds of high stakes trivia. My Guests Tonight are: Sara Bradford AKA SJ Childs https://sjchilds.org/ Chris Liguori Pub Trivia Exprience Podcast https://pubtriviaexperience.com/ Nico Pengin Creator - Gamer - Authorhttps://nicopengin.com/ Our Rounds Tonight are: ROUND 1: Florida Man True or False ROUND 2: Healthy Food Connections + NAME 5 ROUND 3: Buzzer Fighter Battle Round HOW AI VIEWED THIS EPISODE:If you'd like to create AI driven summaries from your audio content, check out Castmagic.io In the latest episode of Stuff I Never Knew, host Jeff Revilla started off by introducing the game show and his guests Sarah, Chris, and Nico. The first segment was a 'Florida Man' true or false game where guests took turns guessing the veracity of various outrageous Florida news headlines. Sarah answered correctly on her first attempt, followed by Chris and then Nico. Chris, a Florida native, managed to take a lead with three points in this round. Sarah kicks off Round 2, from Salt Lake City and talked about her show 'The SJ Child Show' which focuses on neurodiversity and special education. She went on to answer questions related to healthy food connections but struggled a bit. Chris discussed his show 'Pub Trivia Experience' and the expansion to a network that includes a series of podcasts. During his turn, Chris aced the healthy food connection questions. Nico, joining from snowy Boston, talked about his podcast 'Gamers Guide of Productivity' which looks at gamification and its application in real life. His questions in the game related to avocados and he eventually got the answer right. Round 3 continued with a video round where contestants had to buzz in and answer. Amelia Earhart and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu were correctly guessed by the contestants, but questions about Thomas Edison and a location with sand dunes were answered incorrectly. There were more questions about government, food, and movies. The hosts and guests engaged in playful banter, trying to guess the correct pronunciation of 'Mojave Desert'. The show drew to a close with another affirming round of participants' guesses. At the end, the participants were congratulated, with Jeff inviting the guests to share their contact information for listeners who may want to follow their shows. Throughout, the host navigated the game with the usual trivia questions interspersed with some lighthearted humor.

Compliance, maturity levels, edge computing Some people think the television phrase, “Set it and forget it” applies to Zero Trust. Today's discussion throws that notion out the window. The interview takes a deep dive into how an agency can move to a Zero Trust Architecture. Three experts discuss compliance, maturity levels, and the role of edge computing. The conclusion is obvious: Zero Trust is a serious, constantly evolving methodology and federal leaders must take advantage of every resource possible to gain a thorough understanding of the process. Jennifer Franks from the GAO points out that Zero Trust is not a new concept and the federal government has all kinds of reference materials to support leaders. She lists information from DISA, NIST, the DoD as well as the OMB. She reminds listeners that there is a maturity model associated with Zero Trust change -- and leaders must be aware of revisions to these documents. Jennifer reminds the audience of the recent upgrade to the DISA model that adds more maturity levels. Guidance is nice, but where to start? During the interview, Wayne Rogers talks about looking at your respective agency's situation and doing a gap analysis. Once that is complete, then one can set priorities. For example, when he used this process, his agency identified a weakness in their VPN system. He prototyped a transition to Secure Access Service Edge and then deployed it across the agency. Probably the best quote from this interview was provided by Akamai's Tony Lauro. He said, “Security has to work despite users.” He is referring to the base concept behind Zero Trust – an automated system that can identify threats and provision resources with appropriate access levels that can have nothing to do with end users acting themselves. Ron Popeil's catchphrase may work on television, but not in today's federal government. Jefferson Graham is a Manhattan Beach, California based writer-photographer, educator, and the host/producer of the travel photography series "Photowalks with Jefferson Graham", which streams on YouTube, Tubi and the Roku Network. I first met Jefferson the same day I met Frederick Van Johnson. I drove out to watch him record his Talking Tech podcast, a show he did for USA TODAY when he was one of their tech columnists. His guests that day were Frederick and tech journalist Mark Gurman. Right away it was obvious that there was much more to Jefferson than just being a tech journalist and podcaster. His photography knowledge was front and center. Fast forward a good number of years and Jefferson is busier than ever. His popular PhotowalksTV newsletter marries tech/photo and travel in weekly installments. As an educator, he is an instructor and frequent speaker for the KelbyOne website (I have a discount code for a KelbyOne subscription on the Discount Codes Page). Jefferson has authored of nine books, including the recent Video Nation, a DIY Guide to Planning, Shooting and Sharing great Video, as well as tomes on infomercial king Ron Popeil, the late TV legend Aaron Spelling and a history of Sin City, Vegas: Live and In Person. He has written and/or photographed for a host of publications, including Rolling Stone, People, Us Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, Easy Reader, Esquire and TV Guide. A working photographer, a writer, a podcast host, a video creator, and a darn good guitarist - and that is just the start of knowing my friend Jefferson Graham. On PhotowalksTV he takes viewers to wonderful places, from Southern California to great locations like Dana Point Morro Bay, Cannon Beach, Oregon, Port Townsend, Washington, Madrid, Lisbon, Paris and even all the way to Tokyo. I even had the pleasure of hosting Jefferson for one of his Photowalks series in my home town in Southern CA a few years ago, and it was a blast. I was born and raised here, and yet I learned so much by doing the walk with him. Recently I saw a post Jefferson did, where he talked about using nothing but an iPhone, a few of them actually, for his photowalk in Paris. That connected with me, because years ago I decided that I didn't want to be "that dad" on family vacations that made everyone stop while I took photos. Starting way back with the iPhone 6, all I have taken on trips is my phone. Have there been times I wished I had a "Real Cameras"? Sure, but overall the experience has been great. I decided to invite Jefferson on to talk about the pros and cons of mobile photography, often called iPhoneography, even though you could use any phone. Join all around creative Jefferson Graham and me as we chat about using nothing but a phone as your camera while traveling, on this episode of Behind the Shot. Can you guess this week's topic here at the Overlap Podcast? Now, we recognize this week's topic might be one that you're unfamiliar with, something that is seldom talked about or referenced, and therefore might be a smidge esoteric and out there - yes, you guessed it, it's the "Always Be Closing" scene from David Mamet's play/movie "Glengarry Glenross" so get ready because "Coffee is for closers." Take that, Jack Lemmon. Yeah ... nah, that's not this week's topic. This is a family podcast and that particular scene has more versions of the F word in a seven-minute period than you would have thought possible - even the seldom-used gerundial version. (We'll pause while you look that up ... Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" starts playing). No, this week's topic with our boys Sid and Keith is a mid-year check-in on our Year of Setting Goals that we began in earlier episodes. Our boys will talk at you about quarterly reviews and their necessity in business for staying on top of things year-round; your business is not the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie and BBQ - you can't just "Set it and forget it" (unless you're the ghost of legendary infomercial king Ron Popeil and you're listening to this week's episode ... in which case, we'd love to have you be a guest on the show and would gladly provide a medium for you to conduit through if needed). To keep us on task and from figuring out how to send a guest spot ask to someone who has ceased to be, we'll use as our text this week the seminal business text "Who Moved My Cheese," by Dr. Spencer Johnson, a book all of us have likely heard of but maybe have never actually read. (Sidebar: from the title alone, it feels like it would be a delightful children's book about someone moving the protagonist's cheese and them having to go all over creation to look for it, only to find out that the cheese was inside all of us all along and the journey to find the cheese was the real ... cheese? Kids are dumb; it'll sell). So, goal-setting, breaking routines and something about cheese - sounds like a promising week on the Overlap Podcast so turn on, tune in and take a journey with us ... to find the cheese, I guess ... or a Ronco Pocket Fisherman ... or the good Mitch and Murray leads ... been a long week here, listeners. Enjoy.

Barry and Abigail discuss In 3-D by “Weird Al” Yankovic and sample AvoVino, Carambola Wine, Guava Wine, Passion Fruit, and Lychee Wine from Schnebly Redland's Winery in Homestead, Florida. Barry saw “Weird Al” in July 1996 at The Fonda Theater in Hollywood, California during The Bad Hair Tour. Years later, in August 2015, Barry surprised Abigail with tickets to see “Weird Al” at The Broward Center for the Performing Artsduring The Mandatory World Tour. JP, our wine tour guide from Schnebly, recommended pairing several of the wines with locally-produced smoked fish dip from What Are We Smokin'? Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo in Beat It by Michael Jackson. Rick Derringer of The McCoys (who produced In 3-D) recreated the guitar solo on Eat It by “Weird Al.” Don Pardo of Saturday Night Live fame appears on I Lost on Jeopardy, “Weird Al”'s parody of Jeopardy by The Greg Kihn Band. The Egg Scrambler is a real product advertised by Ron Popeil that was referenced by “Weird Al” in Mr. Popeil. Ron's sister Lisa Popeil was one of the backup singers in “Weird Al”'s Mr. Popeil! Most people can appreciate the importance of core values, but often, core values are overlooked or poorly implemented into the foundation of an organization. Though a business can change over time, core values remain constant, a sturdy backbone helping us to stay rooted and true to our beliefs. For the KJT Group, core values are always top of mind. How are you consciously and unconsciously showing up? On this episode of Ponderings from the Perch, Priscilla sits down with her good friend Michaela Gascon, President and CEO of the KJT Group, to talk about company core values, what leadership means and Michaela's new passion project, 20 Deep Winery. Someone cue infomercial king, Ron Popeil because— Wait! There's more! Priscilla and Michaela discuss everything from contagious culture to Enneagram results (and yes, the peeps at Little Bird Marketing are Enneagram advocates). Michaela shares that she is particularly looking forward to the first half of next year—tightening screws a little bit, committing to the core and building that even stronger foundation. P.S. If you're a wine connoisseur like us, you should check out 20 Deep Winery!
As our last episode of 2021, we'd like to take this time to say goodbye to all those that we lost this year. The slicin' and dicin' Ron Popeil, the Ruff Rydin' DMX, the King of Monday Night Football John Madden, the uhhhhhhh best Burt Reynolds Norm McDonald, and much love and RIP to Shock-G and anyone else that ever got busy in a Burger King bathroom, I'm sure you're all dead of Hepatitis A, B, and C by now. But enough of that, let's look forward to next year, where the rest of your childhood heroes will bite the dust. Until then be glad this is the last time this year you'll have to hear about:- Christmas Garbage- Sweets- The Jerky Racket- New Year's ResolutionsA great man once said "America has always been defined by its excess: the Grand Canyon, professional sports contracts, Wendy's Baconator (extra bacon). I myself have 18 Lamborghinis and a Subaru station wagon. And it's because of this excess that I have flourished. I implore you, please, do no stop profiting. Live for excess, it's the American way." He was right. And with excess comes garbage. A lot of garbage. Packing material, wrapping paper, boxes, bags, plastic molds, zip-ties, batteries, receipts, cards, envelopes, bows, tape. And that's all just for the presents, don't forget the scraps, cans, and boxes that come with cooking your excessive Christmas feast afterwards.Speaking of excess, even with a holiday devoted to letting kids run around from house to house gathering months worth of candy, we somehow find a way to outdo ourselves during the Christmas holiday season. Just how many deserts did your family have this year? Some cookies, a cake, three pies, banana pudding, peach cobbler, and brownies? Topped off with your candy-filled stocking? It's bad enough for one meal, but then you've got leftovers, and extra leftovers by the person that cooked the cake that only wanted one slice for themselves, so you've got to take the rest. So the next two weeks you're eating dessert every night like a king, then you go back to work and they've got to grease the sides of the door just to get you in, Shamu.Hey boys, what if we's wuz ta take summa dat beef ova there, cut it up and dry it out, lettin it get all chewy and what not, then charge an arm and a leg for it, despite it being cheap beef that we just let sit around? Sounds like we're in business, the Don'll love it. We'll call it Jerky, on a count a cuz we're being jerks for makin' it cost so much.Saying you'll do something is not the same as actually doing it. Unfortunately our dumb little lizard brains don't know that, so we get the same good feels from both. That's why we have New Year's Resolutions. Because saying you'll lose that weight, or read that book, or start drawing makes you feel just as good as actually doing it. Everyone loves planning and coming up with ideas for things. But when it comes time to do it? We get an even bigger dopamine hit from cancelling those plans. What weirdos. All this and more on this week's episode! Don't forget to join us on DISCORD, support us on PATREON or by BUYING A SHIRT.Happy New Year, and Condolences to one Dick Masterson, for being Second Best.

Ron Popeil, inventor of The Pocket Fisherman, the Amazing Smokeless Ashtray, and the Inside-The-Shell Egg Scrambler, was (satirically) awarded an Ignoble Award for Consumer Engineering on 7th November, 1993.But the ‘Infomercial King' had spun an enviable career from his talent for selling; from humble beginnings shilling vegetable choppers on the shop floor of Woolworth's to establishing Ronco, a $55 million ‘As Seen On TV' company that eventually went bankrupt. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider Popeil's pathological hatred of runny egg whites and reveal an award-winning way to collect samples of whale snot. But wait, there's more! They also talk about the magic price point for Popeil's inventions. ‘Set and forget' leadership: Hand off the task as fast as possible, move on to other things. It's what we tend to do when we're in a hurry, but the biggest speed advantage this approach confers may be how quickly it can get us into trouble. Here's a way to think about how to delegate that task we've cooked up so that things function smoothly in the kitchen, and nobody gets burned.Notes and Resources:Prefer to read? We're tackling a song that's in the top 10 of our completely subjective list! "Mr. Popeil" is off of Al's In 3-D album, and it is PERFECT. Listen in as we talk about the late Ron Popeil's legacy, the B-52's, inventions, and a whole lot more. This one had me crying laughing, and it better darn well do the same for you. Lauren has Pales In Comparison from Edmund's Oast Brewing Company, and John has No Need Worry & Haole Red from Lanahu Ales. Cheers!
This week we take a short look at just which private companies are currently working on getting themselves into space. We've all heard about Musk, Branson, and Bezos, but who else is there, and what are their plans? In the news this week: LED streetlights decimate moths, the "Tesla Bot," Portland's iconic Mary's Club to move, Google's "time crystals," a new carnivorous plant discovered in the NW, Ron Popeil sets it and forgets it, and the most important of all the news: CREME SAVERS ARE COMING BACK, BABY!
But Wait, There's More – Honoring Ron Popeil: Washington Post columnist and longtime Time magazine editor-at-large David Von Drehle joins host Richard Levick of LEVICK to discuss how Ron Popeil was the first to realize the power of the infomercial and taught a generation of Americans how to sell through entertainment. “Isn't that amazing?” To read David's article on Ron Popeil, click here.
In which I wrap up a discussion of Sparks' until-recently maligned 1977 album. Ron and Russell shared a studio with a revolving door of play-for-pay studio cats, and the end result was a record that sounded good, but didn't sell. Oh, BTW, yes I know Ron Popeil was famous for saying "but wait, there's more," not "but that's not all." A lot has changed in the world of technology in the last half century, and while there are far too many advances to speak of, it's also fair to point out that the world seems to be full of some pretty useless things.Support the show
Ron Popeil is a famed American inventor, pitchman, television star, and the creator of the television “infomercial”. Ron is the quintessential rags to riches tale. At sixteen, Ron began to sell the very products his father's factory produced in the flea markets on Maxwell street in Chicago. By age 17, Popeil had amassed enough of a savings to move out on his own and setup a stand at the flagship Woolworth store in Chicago. He hawked his gadgets six days a week, twelve hours each day. Popeil's stand became an attraction with hundreds of people spending their lunch hours every day watching Ron's pitch.
