Präsentiert von Allianz.«The United States vs. Billie Holiday» / «Jupiter's Legacy» (Staffel 1) / «I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson» (Staffel 1) / «The Mitchells vs. the Machines» / Fast alle Filme von Michael Haneke / «Love, Death & Robots» (Staffel 1 & 2) / «Things Heard and Seen» / «His House» / «The Woman in the Window» / «Cruella» / «101 Dalmatians» (1961) / «American Psycho»

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, Dan and Conor have an incredibly interesting and wide-ranging conversation with directing duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. We chat about their new movie Things Heard & Seen (now available on Netflix), then dive back into their eclectic, accomplished career. From the serendipitous way they came to make the doc Off the Menu: The Last Days of Chasen's to the unintentional development of the underrated The Extra Man, starring Kevin Kline and Paul Dano. Their HBO film Cinema Verite is briefly mentioned, a wonderful telling of the making of the groundbreaking PBS documentary An American Family from 1973. Other topics include a failed reimagining of Bride of Frankenstein, the nightmarish post-production process on The Nanny Diaries thanks to Harvey Weinstein, and why Robert has edited most of their films himself. There's also a delightful detour into discussing their semi-lost documentary Wanderlust, which examines road movies and their place in Americana. An unsolvable issue with rights to film clips used in the edit made it unreleasable. There's also references to Danny Peary's 1981 book Cult Movies and Stoner by John Williams. Josh & Dean sit down with American Splendor writer/directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini for a freewheeling discussion of the movie. Shari & Bob talk about meeting Harvey & Joyce, the writing & making of the film, their working method and creative choices, casting, memorable moments from the shoot, the film’s main themes, and Harvey’s legacy. According to Bob, “Everything about the making of American Splendor was unorthodox and unusual.” For instance, the first day of casting was on September 11, 2001… Other tidbits include the surprising revelation that the film was heavily influenced by the Peanuts animated specials of the 1960s! Listen for that and so much more. Harvey Pekar, the underground author of the acclaimed comic book American Splendor, passed away earlier this week in Cleveland, Ohio. Although he worked for almost 40 years as a file clerk in a hospital, he turned the everyday struggles of his life in to a distinctive series of books, which started in 1976 and were illustrated by artists such as Robert Crumb, Gary Dumm, Greg Budgett and Mark Zingarelli. Back in December 2003 I spoke with Harvey in London when the film adaptation of American Splendor was released in UK cinemas. Directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman, it starred Paul Giamatti as Pekar, Hope Davis as his wife Joyce and featured an inventive mix of fiction, animation and documentary footage. Critically acclaimed, it won a string of awards, including prizes at festivals such as Sundance and Cannes, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. We discussed various aspects of his life and career, including how started the comic book, the film adaptation, his feud in the late 1980s with David Letterman and the influences on his work.File Download (0:00 min / 22 MB)
