What happens when creative power, marketing wisdom, and startup energy collide? In this episode, Jay sits down with Julie Matzen to explore the journey from agency leadership to startup empowerment. With honesty, laughter, and depth, they unpack the emotional architecture of business: the fear of becoming irrelevant, the power of validation, and the truth that failure isn't a wall—it's a lens. The conversation moves from the dangers of letting AI write your ad copy to the Gen X struggle of feeling unseen, all the way to the radical idea that access to wisdom should be affordable. Through shared metaphors, unapologetic insights, and unexpected childhood stories, Julie and Jay remind us that the real power in business—and in life—comes not from polish, but from presence."Don't let AI be your art. The paintbrush doesn't get the credit."Bio: Julie Matzen is the co-founder of Boarderline and founder of the MayDay Agency. With over 25 years in branding and digital strategy for top-tier brands, Julie now focuses on democratizing access to expert advisors for startups and mid-sized businesses. The evolving nature of work, including the rise of fractional roles and the contingent workforce. The importance of historical perspective in adapting to technological and societal changes. Opportunities for expanding roles in communications through AI and data-driven insights. Notable Quotes On Leadership Under Pressure: "I've noticed the best leaders always do well under pressure. That's how you tell if you ever want to know the difference between, like, a really good leader and a not so good leader, watch them when things are not going well for them." — David Armano [00:17:05 → 00:17:20] On Navigating Career Changes: "I think it's a healthy experience to go through, to go through a crisis of some kind in your life, and it sucks when it happens to you and you're suddenly without an employer or without a lifeline or without a safety net or whatever motivates you." — Dan Nestle [00:17:54 → 00:18:10] On Grief and Growth: "Grief is both ugly and beautiful. It's ugly in the sense that it's painful... But there's a lot of gifts that do come with grieving." — David Armano [00:20:59 → 00:22:20] On Ageism in the Workplace: "Age is actually sort of, you know, in most white collar cultures, it's something they kind of want to stay away from because of everything that we're talking about, because it's the one acceptable ism in the world of white collar work." — David Armano [00:28:31 → 00:28:45] On the Evolution of Work: "The thing is, though, that there are so many, there's so much happening around us now that I think that the nature of work and the nature of this framework that almost all of corporate America at least functions within, which is that you age out, it's got to change, and it's changing in some places, but it really needs to change." — Dan Nestle [00:31:38 → 00:31:54] On AI and Entry-Level Work: "AI does what likes, like someone coming into the workforce with no experience or very little experience. The tasks that you would give to those employees is what AI excels at." — David Armano [00:35:20 → 00:35:30] On the Future of Work: "It's never been such a good time to be a CEO of TBD." — David Armano [00:42:28 → 00:42:31] On the Role of AI: "One thing that AI is great at and should get better at is that is that first draft, that first draft of a business plan, that first draft of any written communication, that first draft of a data, to use your example, like first draft, the data analysis, it's really good at that." — David Armano [01:00:14 → 01:00:30] Resources and Links Dan Nestle The Trending Communicator | Website Daniel Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X David Armano David Armano's Website David Armano | LinkedIn David By Design | David Armano on Substack Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)

How do you define ‘home'? - a place where you can let your hair down, be yourself, be safe, feel a sense of belonging? But what if that home were just an empty space, would you still feel the same? What if that home didn't have your thumbprint, meaning your input on how it was decorated where you could truly find peace, knowing that this sacred space was a part of your caring community? It's not the decorating and furniture per se, but what items that were chosen based on your preferences that make you feel you matter and are visible to both yourself and everyone who visits. What is particularly challenging is that many of those empty spaces are the first-time homes of aging out foster youth who have often experienced moving from place to place where they may not have had any sense of real belonging. Without this feeling of belonging and community, these young folks are at greater risk of becoming homeless and being part of a community that cares is the first step to ending homelessness. What began as a random act of kindness, has adapted into an incredible community. A Sense of Home has created more than 850 homes – helping more than 2,000 former foster youth and their children. A Sense of Home strives to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes for youth aging out of foster care with donated furniture and home goods. 50% of those struggling with homelessness are former foster youth. The homeless crisis can only end through prevention. To share a quote from one of their recipients: When my home is empty, I feel empty In 2014, Founders Georgie Smith and Melissa Goddard answered a call for help on social media from a foster youth who had aged out of foster care; responded by creating a first-ever real “home”. From there, A Sense of Home has grown into a community of its own with staff, volunteers, and dedication that reaches far and wide. To learn more about A Sense of Home, please check out their website: https://asenseofhome.org/

In this episode of the Jaded Mechanic podcast, host Jeff is joined by his friend Brandon Dills from Jarhead Diagnostics. They discuss the busy year that Jarhead Diagnostics has had, including moving into a larger facility. Jeff shares his experience of seeing car engines with low mileage that have already been damaged. The episode offers insights into the automotive repair industry and the challenges that come with it.Jeff and Brandon delve into the importance of mobile technicians in the automotive industry. They highlight that even the most skilled technicians may encounter a problematic car that requires a fresh perspective. This is where mobile technicians come in, providing invaluable solutions to complex issues. Brandon also noted that customers expect quick and efficient repairs, and mobile technicians can help shops meet these expectations. However, some shops may be hesitant to work with mobile technicians, fearing a loss of business. Despite this, both agree that mobile technicians are essential to the industry, providing a valuable service to both customers and shops. The episode also touches on the shortage of technicians in the industry and the challenges faced by both technicians and shop owners. The guest speaker emphasizes the importance of valuing technicians and treating them as valuable assets, rather than replaceable workers. He suggests that shop owners should pay technicians well and not require them to donate hours or purchase tools that the shop uses. While it is not the shop owner's responsibility to provide retirement benefits, they should cover the cost of specialized tools and diagnostic equipment. By valuing technicians and treating them well, they will be more invested in their work and more likely to stay with the shop long-term.The episode also highlights that traditional retirement benefits, such as a pension and a watch, are not typically provided in the automotive industry. Therefore, technicians need to take responsibility for their own retirement plans. This includes investing in their own future, taking care of their team, and advancing their career. Shops that require technicians to purchase their own tools or do rework are not helping the situation. Shop owners should pay technicians well, so they are not struggling to buy tools that the shop uses. Technicians should also plan for lean times and when they are no longer able to work in the industry. This could involve having a side hustle or a backup plan, such as a YouTube channel or tooling training. Overall, technicians need to take control of their own retirement plans, as traditional retirement benefits are not typically provided in the automotive industry.[00:00:00] Seized engines. Parenal Alienation: What's Really in the Best Interest of the Kids?A listener wrote in, asking us to discuss in greater detail the concept of parental alienation. Many mainstream scientific groups say it's not a legitimate diagnosis. What happens, though, when a lawyer brings it into a court case and the judge rules in favor of it? That's what's happening right now in Utah with the case of Brynlee Larson, 12, and Ty Larson, 15, who have barricaded themselves in their room because a judge ruled that their father should have time with them, even though they say he's sexually and physically abused them in the past. It's an incredibly complicated topic, and Seth and Pete are here to break it down a bit in order to better understand the case, but also to help those in cases in which parental alienation is brought up and used on one side or the other. It's a fascinating discussion that certainly shows how tricky it is to deal with this not just in legal cases but also in emotional challenges that come when parents fight this way over their children.Links & NotesProPublic article about the case of Ty and Brynlee LarsonPsychology Today: The Truth About Parental AlienationSchedule a consult with SethGot a question you want to ask on the show? Killer Grades Are Given for Aging Out of Being a Twink (like Menudo) Les, Kurt, and Jason are still in the afterglow of their interview with the PornHub Math Teacher (check out the bonus episode that was released just before this episode), but they're here to explore the way the Amityville Intellectual Property is being exploited. Plus, Les and Jason explain to Kurt (in a very quiet soothing tone) what ASMR is. Then Kurt delivers A LOT of Blac Chyna news (She's being sued! She's doing celebrity boxing!) Sally Carrocino started traveling later in life, but she made up for it. She traveled extensively in Europe and even married in Italy. When her husband passed away, she was devastated but it did not stop her from pursuing her retirement dreams. California's high cost of living motivated her to look at other states, but none seemed to meet most of her needs. Then she had an epiphany. While she couldn't figure out where to move in the U.S., she knew precisely the neighborhood in Florence, Italy. Shortly thereafter Sally rid most of her material possessions, and moved with her dog Zoe to Florence and she has not looked back. "The Bond" is a powerful memoir that chronicles the strength of the relationships formed among a collection of unrelated siblings who forged a remarkable, separate, and permanent family within a foster home. Kirkus.com calls it: "A poignant, infuriating, informative, and ultimately triumphant account of an unusual clan." BookLife.com wrote: "Grotticelli's unsparing honesty about his birth and foster families will make readers wince and keep them marveling at the indomitability of these children. That the foster siblings were able to forge familial bonds with each other is extraordinary." OnlineBookClub.com said: "This is a book about real people, real lives and real feelings. It is the story of their triumph over adversity and their struggle to find the kind of family love that many of us take for granted." On this week's episode, we discuss California's looming foster care cliff for older youth, obesity-as-neglect in Pennsylvania, and the passing of a major figure in international adoption. Lisa Thurau, the head of Strategies for Youth, joins us to talk about the true front door of the juvenile justice system: police encounters with youth. We talked about the origins of her organization, how it trains law enforcement to think differently about engaging young people, and what she thinks will come of the current moment of reckoning around police and civil rights. LGBTQ2+ older adults may experience significant barriers to healthcare that can make them reluctant to embrace their full identities while living in long-term care and community settings. The fear of discrimination may prevent them from seeking medical attention or disclosing their desires for advanced care if they are living with a chronic condition such as dementia. To address these challenges, Rabbi Sara Paasche-Orlow, Director of Spiritual Care at Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, created Aging Out – a CABHI-supported initiative designed to disseminate best practices in LGBTQ2+ aging, health, and dementia care among front-line healthcare workers.

About 30,000 youth age out of the foster care system in the United States each year. "Aging Out" of foster care is what happens when a youth turns 18 in the custody of the state. With little to no help, support and/or family, these young adults have a higher chance at facing homelessness, unemployment, and incarceration. I Speak, You Matter was created to allow those affected most by the foster care system to share their stories of triumph and tragedy in an effort to create a higher ratio of success stories among those transitioning to a more independent lifestyle after the foster care system. This is an open and safe platform for former foster care youth, life coaches, TIL Support staff and mental health providers to share diverse perspectives, narratives, resources and tips for everyone that have or will touch the foster care system in one form or another. Hosted by renown poet, author, speaker and TIL Youth Ambassador, Nephateria Burke and Florida Youthshine Ambassador and FLITE Peer Advocate Marc Louis.
