We might be talking "silver age silliness" but we're not horsing around! Well, Lois Lane is as she falls in love with a horse who is also a man and then becomes a horse herself? Confused, then you need to listen to this week's episode. We start with Adventure Comics in 1962 that introduces Comet the Super-Horse alongside Krypto and the League of Super Pets in a truly wacky issue. Then it's over to Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane for Comet's magical backstory. All this plus Rob makes a ton of horse jokes! Or should we say HAY there as we talk Comet the Super-Horse alongside Krypto and the rest of the League of Super Pets. We. tackle a couple of wacky 1960s issues from some masters as Jerry Siegel, Curt Swan, and Leo Dorfman complete with telepathic animals, wayward magic, evil brain aliens and much more. Ready for some silver age silliness? For the first time, we are talking Superman's best pal: Jimmy Olsen! We start with a brief history of the redheaded sidekick, his first "official" appearance back in 1941, and an issue of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen that seems our hero transform into a werewolf, don drag to pretend to be a woman, befriend a leprechaun (that's really Mr. Mxyzptlk) and lots more zany shenanigans. We wrap up by talking about our favorite onscreen Jimmy's and what we want to see next from the character. Ep. 151 What if Jimmy Olsen became a werewolf, a woman and was friends with a leprechaun?from Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #44 (DC Comics)Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersGrab your bow ties and sweater vests, it's a deep dive into Jimmy Olsen! We kick off with a look at the origins of the character, from office boy to cub reporter to (eventually) photographer including early appearances in Siegel & Shuster penned issues. Then we jump into the wacky world of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen in a three-part issue that sees Jimmy transform into a wolf-man, go under cover as a chorus girl and battle an inter-dimensional trickster, all set to the terrific art of Curt Swan. We wrap up by discussing Jimmy onscreen from Lois & Clark to My Adventures with Superman and speculate on Skyler Gisondo's take on the character in James Gunn's upcoming film. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

Host Anthony Desiato digs into the final days of Pre-Crisis Superboy — before the skies turned red and Clark Kent's past as Superboy was stripped from continuity in John Byrne's MAN OF STEEL reboot.First, Anthony and guest Rob O'Connor (All Star Superfan Podcast) shine a light on an overlooked gem: the 1984-1985 miniseries SUPERMAN: THE SECRET YEARS by Bob Rozakis, Curt Swan, and Kurt Schaffenberger — with covers by Frank Miller! — which chronicled Clark Kent's junior year in college at Metropolis University and showed his transition from Superboy to Superman. Then, Case Aiken (Men of Steel) tags in for the Post-Crisis storyline "The Greatest Hero of Them All" by John Byrne, Paul Levitz, and Greg LaRocque. If Clark Kent was never Superboy, then who inspired the Legion of Super-Heroes and had all those adventures with them in the future? This 1987 crossover sought to reconcile this continuity conflict over four issues spanning LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #37-38, SUPERMAN #8, and ACTION COMICS #591. This episode is dedicated to the life and career of the great director Richard Donner. Donner is considered by many to be the architect of the superhero film genre when he directed 1978's Superman: The Movie. Donner also directed such classics as The Goonies and the Lethal Weapon franchise. Not only is Superman a classic film, but the seriousness with which Donner both the character and the source material is considered the standard for future superhero films. Geoff Johns is the former CCO of DC Entertainment. In 1997, he started his illustrious career working for Richard Donner, and Johns suggested this episode when he came on the podcast back in Episode 315. Gary Frank is an acclaimed comic book artist who has drawn for both DC and Marvel. His rendition of Superman is considered to be the gold standard and compares with the legendary Curt Swan. Frank was welcomed by Johns to join this tribute to Richard Donner having worked with the legendary director on various Superman comic books.

Host Anthony Desiato rings in 2023 with the story that ends with a wink: the seminal 1986 Superman tale "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" by Alan Moore and Curt Swan. Anthony and guest Ed Gross (VOICES OF KRYPTON podcast and forthcoming book) dig into the classic coda to the Silver Age Superman, examining whether the story was a fitting farewell to that iteration of Superman and to the character generally. Two stories about Legionnaires going bad in a row.  First the Ladies then the gents.  Ross has strong feelings about both.  Adventure Comics 326 By Jerry Siegel and John Forte and Superboy 117 from 1964 by Siegel, Curt Swan, and George Klien.  The stories may be both about Legionnaires doing bad but both very different.  Neat to see one writer bring two different storie using a similar trope. Both pure Silver Age Legion!

The lead story of 1982's Superman #372 might look a little old-fashioned next to the cutting-edge superhero storytelling of Claremont's Uncanny X-Men, Miller's Daredevil, or the Wolfman-Perez New Teen Titans, but readers raved about the brain-bending plot twist in Cary Bates and Curt Swan's "Superman's History-Changing Mission!" What did comics fans see in this seemingly illogical Superman adventure? We're going back in time 40 years (and the Man of Steel is going back a bit further still) to investigate the curious charms of the Bronze Age Pre-Crisis Superman and the writer they called "Mr. Surprise"! Also covered in this episode: The perfect drink to compliment global blackmail, more uses for super-ventrioloquism, Superman's CIA contact, and humble advice to the head honchos at NASA. PLUS: Following up from the previous episode on LJN's Uncanny X-Men video game for the NES, Justin learns that the Sega Genesis had its own X-Men adventure with a counterintuitive secret to getting to the final level.
